These 12 Photos were taken by Robert Pirsig’s very own camera, as he Chris, Sylvia and John made that 1968 epic voyage upon which The Travel Narrative for Mr Pirsig’s ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘ (ZMM) book was based. Taken in 1968 along what is now known as ‘‘The ZMM Book Travel Route ‘‘ each photo scene is actually ‘‘Written-Into ‘‘ Mr. Pirsig’s book => ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘ (ZMM)

Each of the 832 photographs in these Four Albums show a scene described in the book ‘‘Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘. Each photo was especially researched and photographed along the ZMM Route to show a specific ZMM Book Travel Description Passage: This passage is shown in quote marks below the respective photo. As you look at each of these photos, you will be viewing scenes similar to those that author Pirsig, Chris, and the Sutherlands might have seen, on that epic voyage, upon which the book ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘ was based. Thus it is, that these 832 photographs are ‘‘A Color Photo Illustrated Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘. Indeed ‘‘A Photo Show Book‘‘ for ZMM. Sights & Scenes Plus Full Explanation.

This album shows what I saw on my RETURN trip home (San Francisco California to Aiken South Carolina), Summer 2002. These 55 photos were taken along the Route of the “1849er’s Gold Rush to California” (In Reverse Direction). After I completed my ZMM Research, I RETURNED home by way of the Route of the ‘49’s Gold Rush. This route included the route of the “California Gold Rush Trail” (in Nevada & California), as well as portions of the Oregon Trail' all the way into Missouri. These 1849er’s Travel Route Photos, were taken AFTER I took those Photos shown in the above Album named “A Color Photo Illustrated ZMM Book, With Travel Route Sights & Scenes Explained”.

Enjoy 225 Photos of Flowers & Red Wing Blackbirds Along the ZMM Route. This Album of Color Photos shows every Flower and Red Wing Blackbird (RWBB) that I could “get within my camera sights!!” This was done in honor of the ZMM Narrator's emphasis of Flowers and Redwing Blackbirds in the book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”. I was very surprised to find RWBB's the entire travel route from Minneapolis to San Francisco.

Starting Monday 19 July 2004, Mark Richardson traveled the ZMM Route, on his trusty Jakie Blue motorcycle. Mark made these 59 interesting photographs of what he saw along the way. As he toured, he pondered his own life destiny (past present future), and sought to discover his own deeper personal meaning of the book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”.

The former home (~1968) of John and Sylvia Sutherland, at 2649 South Colfax Ave, Minneapolis MN, shown in 18 photos. Despite John's quite negative disparaging statements in ZMM, about their home back in Minneapolis, this same house, shown in these photos, looks to us like a wonderful, beautiful home along a very nice, quiet, shady street, in a perfectly fine Minneapolis Neighborhood!

For GPS Navigation Showing Map, We Highly Recommend “Garmin Locus Map” APP, For Your Android Or iPhone.

And For ZMM Route Travel, You Should Add ZMM Route GPS WayPoints, To Your “Garmin Locus Map”.

To GPS Users & ZMM 50th ZMM Ride Travelers

As I mentioned on the May 19, 2024 ZMM Coordinating ZOOM Meeting, I plan in July to travel the ZMM Route with David Matos in my Prius.
…And to help to determine in advance the good route stopping places I will have displayed on my Laptop Computer, my photos taken along the route in July 2002. To do this I have saved my ZMM Route Gallery Photos into a USB Memory Stick, ~3GB. This was accomplished over a 3 day transfer using HTtrack.
…And as a way to know when our Prius gets near to an interesting WayPoint, or other “ZMM Traveler Stop”, I will have my Android Galaxy A03a Phone, running the highly advantageous APP called “Garmin Locus Map”, set to show all the WayPoints of => Henry Gurr's Google My Maps, Create a Map. For => The Travel Route of Robert Pirsig’s book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”, GPX File = hsgZMMtripRaidyWaukeskaWIÚvidGurr'sPaloAltoCA+Uc+Min+ON+Pri+ZmmTravStop14 .gpx => Which shows all of My ZMM Book Research GPS WayPoints of “The ZMM Route, From Minneapolis, MN to San Francisco, CA.
To See This Google Map, click on the Blue Link next down, and after it comes up, scroll down to and click on Henry Gurr’s ZMM Google Route Map.
https://www.robertpirsig.org/zmm50thride/

Take Some Time To Study This Above-Mentioned Google Map. Since Published On January 4, 2024, This Has Had An Amazing 4,472 Views:
… Then to get a copy of this Henry Gurr’s ZMM Route.gpx => ClickOn the three dots at right edge of red area, and click on Download KML. Use Caltopo.com to change to .gpx if necessary. And once saved into your computer, you are ready to put this .gpx into your Android “Garmin Locus Map” App below.
.*********** .

For Android & iPhone: The Highly Advantageous, Sophisticated, & Functional APP Called “Garmin Locus Map” =>
…HOW TO INSTALL THIS APP AND THEN LOAD ZMM ROUTE.gpx =>
...On your Android, go to Google Play Store, and in search box type Locus Map > Hit Go > scroll down to Locus Map 4 Outdoor Navigation, Hit Install and wait for download to complete, then hit Open. Take some time to familiarize with what it does. Now you are ready to put into your saved file.gpx, into your Android Garmin Locus Map App => which is the above-mentioned GPX File = hsgZMMtripRaidyWaukeskaWIÚvidGurr'sPaloAltoCA+Uc+Min+ON+Pri+ZmmTravStop14 .gpx. that you saved into your computer.
Following instructions you will next find this file > Hilite > and Copy.
…Now, connect your computer to your Android with a USB data cable: Then in your computer’s file system, find where shows your Android File System’s content and look for > Internal > Downloads > Click on the Downloads space and then > Do > Paste. You should see the above-mentioned file .gpx.
…The next series of peculiar steps will make the .gpx accessible to the “Garmin Locus Map” => Looking at your just opened Android’s screen filled with & showing various APP Icons, Press and drag down, so you see an empty rectangle at top. And just below this rectangle, you will see “My Files”. Tap this and successively look for, and Tap > ~Phone Memory > Internal > Downloads > where you should see the .gpx file name mentioned above. Tap this, and the APPs that can receive & display this .gpx will appear as Icons. ClickOn the Locate Map Icon. At this point, the “Garmin Locus Map” should automatically come up with the .gpx WayPoints displayed on a Google Map.
…Take some time to familiarize with what it does.
Click Here For A Good User Manual. It Has A Video Which Is Very Effective.
For A Second User Manual:& User Guide To Functions:& Guidance.

…NOTE: The steps for iPhone are likely similar: But I have no way to know further.

COST:
1) Garmin Locus Map APP is free, but can upgrade the maps for $10.
2) My full-function Android Smart Phone =. Samsung Galaxy A03a with 16GB Memory & 8GB RAM, was $49 at Walmart Store back in August 23. I highly recommend it.
3) To Power my Laptop Computer and several USB devices=> I purchased for $26.18 +Shipping => 300W Car Power Inverter DC 12V (from Cigarette Lighter Socket), to 110V AC Converter with LED Display & 2x2.4A Dual USB Car Adapter Charger by VOLTWORKS.Company.
…4.5 out of 5 stars 778 ratings. This works very well, and should be adequate to run my 120 AC device for my car, on the ZMM Route Travel In July 2024.
From Amazon.com Full Information, Photo, And A Video That Shows How Uo Use This Inverter In Actual Vehicle Use. Click Here.

... HELPFUL HINTS:
1) After using my Android with the Garmin Locus Map APP, coordinated with the .gpx, and after shutting off and re start my Android … Now is the problem to get it back! Simply go through your Android’s screens filled with & showing various APP Icons, and tap on the Icon for Garmin Locus Map. All the ZMM Route WayPoints.gpx still should be there.
2) Tracking will start by self, and show as growing thin red line on Map. In real-time, as you are driving, the screen view will rotate so the direction you are traveling shown on the map is Up on your Android Screen, an arrow icon pointing in the direction of travel, will at the end the growing red line. As you continue driving, the map scene will automatically keep the Direction Arrow and growing red line (which is where your car is on the map) , in center screen. When you stop driving and you are just looking at the map, North will be Up, by Gravity. .
3) One time, I found "Satellites OFF" and my son David punched around to get e’m turned back on.
4) The above mentioned video. Should help you learn how to use most action tap points, including "Make A WayPoint” with Audio Spoken Comment..
5) Even after long & successful showing of the ever-growing red tracking line, if I put my Android in my Prius and start driving, the tracking did not re-start: From this, I learn, that I first must get the tracking going ~Automatically...and then put my Android in Prius & Drive.
6) The “Garmin Locus Map” APP, probably has Voice Turn By Turn Instructions, but I haven’t found it yet.
7) While walking by our house in Aiken South Carolina, I had the Garmin Locus Map running on my GalaxyA03a, I taped on the Icon that looks like Edge View Of A Book => About 6- choices. => I taped “Nearest WayPoint” => This immediately showed extensive information about University of Chicago’s Cobb Hall. This came from my above-mentioned ZMM Route.gpx.

STATEMENTS AS TO HOW GOOD IS “GARMIN LOCUS MAP” APP =>
1) Locus Map, one of the best outdoor navigation apps for Android. By Cnet.com
2) I put Locus Maps, Avenza, Garmin Explore, Google Maps and Waze on my phone. Locus behaves most like the more powerful Garmin devices and I do like it. When my Garmin is ready for the great e-waste pile in the sky, I might go with a weather resistant smartphone and Locus. Locus (and the newer Garmin devices) can also update maps and tracks without a PC. By user posted on forum.
3) Locus Map surprises you every day, it's loaded with functions you haven't ever expected you would need sometimes. For example you'll never forget where you parked your car in front of a big mall. By Garmin Locus Map development team.
4) Have you used locus map on your smartphone yet? It's made for bicycling, and we've started (like 7 years ago!) using it here for motorcycling, because it's so good. I have no idea what the limitations are on the edge that you're using, so I can't comment on that hardware. I do know that if you want a turn prompt in the woods (singletrack) you're going to want to do one of two things: [However] Turn by turn navigation is for street navigation, because of the distance between turns and the very definite difference in roads. For single track, turn by turn rarely works at all, because there are 3+ trails at several turns, elevation differences, and very close proximity. By Advrider.com Rider Forum.
5) Connect it with Locus Map, one of the best outdoor navigation apps for Android. By Cnet.com, which continues => On a whole new level! Enjoy route planning on a big screen of a smartphone and show maps (even on non-map devices), navigate, track your activities or even play geocaching with Garmin. => With “Garmin Locus Map” You Can =>

use it as main activity application which enables you: to display real-time data from Locus Map running on your smartphone in your Garmin:
see maps, including any overlays (no need for native map support of Garmin device!
do navigation
have guidance
do track recording
see device status (battery, GPS.. )
record activities, provide their statistics and store them on Garmin Connect
see map stored on your Garmin device (on supported devices)
export routes from your smartphone to your Garmin to navigate them with other activity apps (on devices supporting navigation features)
This APP provides communication between mobile outdoor navigation Locus Map and its Garmin-based extension application. After the initial setup, you don’t need to open this application again as it runs in the background when required.

The full-featured Premium version, with special features, and alternate map choices, can be purchased in Locus Store for about $10.

THE GOOD FEATURES OF AN ADDED NOTIFICATION SYSTEM:
WHY DO YOU USE LOCUS LIVE TRACKING?
Wolfdietrich, a mountain biker from Austria
I use Live Tracking mainly on MTB tours. It increases my flexibility tremendously when starting at different times and/or locations and makes it easy to meet without fixed meeting points. In addition, there is a good sense of security on longer bike trips that your family knows where you are...
Śnieżna Pantera, airsoft team from Poland
Locus Map with LiveTracking happened to be a big game changer for the way we do Airsoft. It allows us to see and communicate with each other. No matter the terrain and conditions. Even when radio fails. Along with extremely functional GPS it covers all our needs.
Steven, a mountain e-biker from Belgium
I started an e-biker group on Facebook to share my passion in off road e-biking with others. I use Locus Live Tracking when out in the woods with my buddies on the e-bikes to know where everybody is. We can easily spot if someone in the group missed a turn.
Tomáš, a mountain biker from Czech Rep.
I use LT for my MTB rides so that my family knows where I am if I crashed somewhere in the woods. And when we get out together but each in different time it's very easy to meet - we just watch each other on map until we get together.
