These 12 Photos were taken by Robert Pirsig’s very own camera, as he Chris, Sylvia and John made that 1968 epic voyage upon which Mr Pirsig’s <em>Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance</em> (ZMM) book was based. Taken in 1968 along what is now known as <em> The ZMM Book Travel Route</em> each photo scene is actually <em>Written-Into</em> Mr. Pirsig’s book => <em>Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (ZMM) </em>

As you look at each of these photos, you will be viewing scenes similar to those that author Pirsig, Chris, and the Sutherlands might have seen, on that epic voyage, upon which the book <em>Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance</em> was based. Thus it is, that these 832 photographs are <em>A Color Photo Illustrated Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance</em>. Indeed <em>A Photo Show Book</em> for ZMM. Sights & Scenes Plus Full Explanation

These 55 photos were taken along the Route of the <em>1849er’s Gold Rush to California</em> (In Reverse Direction). After I completed my ZMM Research, I RETURNED home by way of the Route of the ‘49’s Gold Rush. This route included the route of the <em>California Gold Rush Trail</em> (in Nevada & California), as well as portions of the <em>Oregon Trail</em> all the way into Missouri." These 1849er’s Travel Route Photos, were taken AFTER I took those Photos shown in the above Album named “‘‘A Color Photo Illustrated ZMM Book, With Travel Route Sights & Scenes Explained’

This Album of Color Photos shows every Flower and Red Wing Blackbird (RWBB) that I could “get within my camera sights!!” This was done in honor of the ZMM Narrator's emphasis of Flowers and Redwing Blackbirds in the book ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.’‘ I was very surprised to find RWBB's the entire travelroute from Minneapolis to San Francisco.

The former home (~1968) of John and Sylvia Sutherland, at 2649 South Colfax Ave, Minneapolis MN, shown in 18 photos. Despite John's quite negative disparaging statements in ZMM, about their home back in Minneapolis, this same house, shown in these photos, looks to us like a wonderful beautiful home along a very nice, quiet, shady street, in a perfectly fine Minneapolis Neighborhood!

BELOW IS AN ABBREVIATED LIST OF ZMMQ GALLERY HINTS FOR VIEWING THE PHOTOS YOU WILL BE LOOKING AT:
....A) Click on ANY photo several times to get the LARGEST view:
....B) Some of the Photos you are looking at will be so big, that portions of it are Off The Edges Of Your Computer Screen: ((This is most especially true of the largest size versions of Panoramas, which will expand to VERY LARGE!!)).

....C) Thus you will have to learn to use the Mouse Drag Sliders (at bottom & right side), to move the image, to see it all.
…Because the Expanded Panoramas are so large, you should read the caption first, on the smaller view.
....D) Suggestion1: At first Don’t Read -- Just Slowly Scroll Thru Photos, to get an Idea What Is There.
....E) Suggestion2: You Might Get Out Your Paper United States Road Atlas, so you can see the Map Locations of the towns mentioned in the photos.
....F) Any other Hints you can think of? Please send email.

BELOW IS A FULL & COMPLETE LIST OF VIEWING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ZMMQ GALLERY PHOTOS, and ESPECIALLY PANORAMAS, WHICH ARE VERY LARGE:

....A) GENERAL RULE FOR ALL ZMMQ Gallery Photos =>
Click On ANY Photo, Several Times, To Get The Largest View , especially in case of Fine Print OR need to see Small Detail =>
....You may want this largest view => To enlarge a hard to see place in photo, OR In case of text “Fine Print”, to get Ez Reading.

....B) In Addition: You may need
a) A magnifying glass to read the small letters. OR
b) On your computer's keyboard, hold down the CTRL key at left, while several times press the … += … key at the upper right of most keyboards.
c) For most anything displayed on your computer screen, this above b). is a general procedure to increase the magnification of what you are looking at. To return it to where it was, hold CTRL again and press the …_ -… key next left to it.

....C) Some of the Photos you are looking at will be so big, that portions of it are Off The Edges Of Your Computer Screen: This is NOT a problem, but you will have to learn to use the Mouse Drag Sliders (at bottom & right side), to move the image, to see it all.
....D) Because the expanded panoramas are so large, you should read the caption first, on the smaller view. ((This is most especially true of the largest size versions of Panoramas, which will expand to VERY LARGE!!))
....'''E) Each of the Very Wide Photos in this "Album of Panoramas", has been made by "stitching" together (typically) eight different photos. As you are looking at these panoramas, you will be "scrolling", (left to right) through each of the 8 original pictures, in 360 degrees of rotation. The full width of these panoramas is about seven feet!!
....F) Suggestion for Beginners: Place your "mouse pointer" on the photos in this album (ANY photo in this Gallery) and if it "shows a hand", then a "mouse click" will give you will (most of the time) get a much larger view. Typically you will have to twice in succession "click-the-photo", to get the largest and best view. At this magnification, the panorama photos you are viewing are about 7 feet wide, so the view is quite dramatic!!
....G) Second Suggestion for Beginners: When you have the largest view of a panorama, you must use the "slide bars" at right side (or bottom) of the photo to view the whole picture. First use the right hand slider to adjust the picture up-down to see both land and sky. (You may have to "mouse drag" the top if the window way to the top, and drag the bottom as far as possible down. Ditto for the right and left sides of your screen window.) Then use the bottom "slide bar" to scan the whole photo, left to right. The caption of each panorama will (usually) indicate the direction of the ZMM Route and the direction of Geographic North. Third ....H) Another Suggestion for Beginners: Be sure to note the "Homepage” at the lower right of this (and every) Gallery page. A mouse "click on it", will take you to Menu Items (near top) that will take you to detailed information about all my Gallery Photos and how to view them. ....H) Yet Another Suggestion for Beginners:
AFTER this page comes up, please Scroll Down to => “Detailed & Extensive Instructions For Beginners On How To View ANY ZMMQ Photo Gallery Panoramas, ((Also A Useful Guide For ZMMQGallery Single Photos.))

CAUTION: The Full size of these panoramas can not be viewed in slide show.

New Topic: How to use the Gallery Slide Show:

The photo Gallery Slide Show will bring up each successive photos of my Gallery Photo Albums, without the usual many second wait for that photo to download, from the Internet and finally appear on your Computer Screen. These instructions will help you become proficient in viewing photos on the "php Photo Gallery Web Pages" used on this WebSite.

The Following Instructions Will Guide You Through An Example Of Using The ZMMQ Gallery Slide Show:

((Suggestion: You may want to make a print of these instructions, you are now reading, so you can have the them in your hand as you try to operate the computer and simultaneously understand your computer's (often hard to perceive) reactions to your various Mouse Clicks.))

Step 1: To go to a ZMM Photo Album, click on http://venturearete.org/ResearchProjects/ProfessorGurr/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=album03. You should see the so-called "thumbnails" (small photos) of ZMM Part I Chapters 2 thru 7. Take several minutes to study these small pictures and the captions below them.

Step 2: On this page, upper right, you will see the words "Slide Show." Click on it. This will start the Slide show on your computer. Your computer will bring up, successively, the first pictures of the Album with about a 3 second delay between each. For the moment ignore the pictures, and instead move your mouse pointer along the words at the top of your screen. As you move your mouse over certain words, observe that they change color. These are the various "click points" which respectively control the various actions of the slide show at the top of this album page. Take several minutes to study these controls, but for now, do not click. Once you complete the instructions below, you will be able to figure out many of these controls (and click on them) without my additional help.

Step 3: By now your computer should have quickly cycled through several (fairly large sized) photographs. To allow longer time to view each picture, change the viewing time in the little window top center from 3 (seconds), to say 20 (seconds). This will give you enough time to see the photo and read a bit of the photo caption (if any) at the bottom. To see the entire picture (or caption) you may have to use the "up-down--right-left) scroll bars to "slide the picture" for a better view. On some Internet browsers, the "mouse click drag on the picture" may also be successful. As each new picture comes up, you will probably have to again use the slide bars to readjust the picture position. The slide show should eventually cycle through all the pictures in the album. Occasionally you need more time to study a certain photo. To do this, click on the "stop" at upper left. As you do this, note this click point changes from "stop" to "play". This means it is now ready for your next click to start the play again. Since this takes some getting used to, you should repeat these "play/stop" actions until you are no longer confused. The "play/stop" action allows you to study the picture as long as you want and then move ahead when you are ready.

Step 4: On MS Windows computers (only), there is a more convenient way to start (or stop) the slide show: Having performed the above (MUST), now press the "Enter Key" and simultaneously watch the "stop" & "play" upper left.
…Now, as you do several more "Enter Key Presses," also note the address line at the lower left of the ZMMQ Gallery webpages. Continue to press the "Enter Key," several more times. You will see you are being told (both top & bottom) what the slide show is doing!

Step 5: After having clicked on "stop", as discussed above, you can finish reading and studying the photo. When you are ready to see the next photo => Press the "enter key" twice. This start-stop action will immediately show you the next photo. Try it now. You will like it!!
