These 12 Photos were taken by Robert Pirsig’s very own camera, as he Chris, Sylvia and John made that 1968 epic voyage upon which Mr Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (ZMM) book was based. Taken in 1968 along what is now known as The ZMM Book Travel Route each photo scene is actually Written-Into Mr. Pirsig’s book => Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (ZMM)

Each of the 832 photographs in these Four Albums show a scene described in the book Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Each photo was especially researched and photographed along the ZMM Route to show a specific ZMM Book Travel Description Passage: This passage is shown in quote marks below the respective photo. As you look at each of these photos, you will be viewing scenes similar to those that author Pirsig, Chris, and the Sutherlands might have seen, on that epic voyage, upon which the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance was based. Thus it is, that these 832 photographs are A Color Photo Illustrated Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Indeed A Photo Show Book for ZMM. Sights & Scenes Plus Full Explanation

Further Photos Of Faculty, Administrators, And Students At Montana State College: 1938-1962

By Dennis Gary, BS, Montana State College, 1960; MS, University of Oregon, 1964

Introduction

The photos on this page, collected by Dennis Gary, have been provided to help illustrate his memories of the time he spent at Montana State College (now Montana State University) from 1956 to 1960 and his experiences related to that time at MSC. During his undergraduate years at MSC, Mr. Gary interacted personally with Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance author Robert Pirsig, as well as Sarah Vinke and many other real-life people upon whom the characters in ZMM are based. Although some of the featured photos were taken before 1956, those featured in them were either present during Mr. Gary’s tenure at MSC or mentioned in Mr. Gary's MSC-related memories. These photos are meant to supplement Mr. Gary's firsthand accounts of his relationships with the people pictured here. Visitors to this webpage are encouraged to access—through the links that have been provided at the bottom of the page—the various webpages on the ZMMQ site devoted to Mr. Gary's recollections of this time at MSC.

Sarah Vinke & Colleagues:

NOT Photo Of Dean Sarah Vinke: Due to an error in the Colorado Woman’s College Year Book, the photo of another person was accidently placed here. EXPLANATION: Upon the death of her husband, Louis Vinke, Head of the Animal Husbandry Dept., Sarah Vinke, left MSC to teach in Colorado, first at Colorado Women's College (1936-1938), and subsequently at Colorado State College (1939-1945). "Mrs. Sarah J. Vinke returned to MSC this year to direct the English Department . . . interested in people and a fascinating conversationalist." This photo shows Sarah Vinke in a serious moment as Head of the MSC English Dept. Sarah Vinke was a friend and a staunch supporter of Pirsig at MSC. She plays a crucial role in ZMM. It was Dr. Vinke whose question to Pirsig about teaching Quality served as the 'seed crystal' from which his concept of Quality developed. During Dr. Vinke's long tenure at MSC, Dennis Gary was a student, and mentee, of hers.

This and similar confrontations between Dunbar and Cotner are detailed in Dunbar's Monograph, "Threats to Academic Freedom at Montana State College" (see link below to read this.

MSC President Roland R. Renne thru the years

Dr. Roland R. Renne became the sixth and youngest president of Montana State College July 1, 1944, and was formally inaugurated in April, 1945, when Governor Ford performed the induction ceremony. Dr. Renne has been concerned with the development of the college from the time he came here as an assistant professor of economics and sociology and agricultural economics . . . He has proven himself an able administrator with big plans for the future of the school. PRESIDENT R. R. RENNE is particularly close to the problems of students, taking an active interest in all the the phases of the college. At home with their children, he and Mrs. Renne enjoy gardening and are ski enthusiasts in the winter. [1946 caption] President Renne, who, during the past nine months, has guided Montana State College through a hectic period of transition smoothly and efficiently, can be justly proud of his enviable record. [1947 caption] Roland R. Renne – President of Montana State College – If it weren't for the fact that Dr. Sebastian Xanadu of Boniface Barber College stands only three feet nine inches tall in his sweat socks, Dr. R. R. Renne would be the shortest college president in the United States. Nevertheless, Dr. Renne is still a man who needs a custom-built yo-yo. When you measure college presidents, though, it doesn't make any difference about pencil marks on a ruler – it's ability and competence that count. Judging by the these standards, Dr. Renne is fourteen feet tall. And judging by the vital dynamic program propagated by him for the future of Montana State College, he's a mighty big little man. DR. ROLAND R. RENNE came to Montana State College in 1930. At that time he was assistant professor of Economics; in 1935 he was promoted to Head of the Economics Department; and in 1939 he was head Department of Agricultural Economics. On July 1st, 1944, Dr. Renne was inaugurated President of Montana State College. The detailed and confining of his administration have not kept Dr. Renne from continuing his interest in outside affair. He was appointed a member of the Water Resources Policy Commission by President Truman; he was named a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Land-Grant Colleges and Universities. Dr. Renne has proven himself an able administrator with big plans for the future of the school. Welcome back, President Renne! Mr. Renne is with us again this year after spending two years in the Philippines Chief of the Mutual Security Agency Mission. The campus that witnessed his inauguration in 1944 is continuing to grow and expand. Because of the large enrollment, more and modern class facilities were necessary. The math-physics building and animal industry addition to the agriculture building were ready for classes winter quarter. If construction is completed by September 1954, the boys will say a FOND FAREWELL TO HUDSON HOUSE and be the first occupants of a new men's dorm. Committees are now looking over plans for a new women's dorm in the near future. With construction there is some destruction and the old service shops and old math building are no longer a part of M.S.C.'s landscape. 700 freshman compose the class of 1957 which proved to be the largest in the history of the college. The many new buldings and larger enrollment indicate the continuous growth of this state institution. Dr. Renne works to consolidate the large gains the college has made, thus improving it further. It is rewarding to know that our President has been of service to the nation, the Philippines and again to M.S.C. "During his second year, since his return from the Phillipines Dr. Renne has tried to continue his plans for a college built for the future. Included in these plans is a $75,000 addition to the Student Union Building. Construction was begun on this structure spring quarter and is expected to be completed within a year. Inside the addition are to be bowling alleys, a large ballroom, and extra room for play productions. Although the building is not expected to be large enough to fulfill all of the student needs, it will relieve the situation greatly. Early last sping student faculty committees were appointed to look into the needs of the students and it was through these suggestions that the plans were formulated. In this way it was thought that the students would have a larger share of the responsibility in the directions of the program of expansion." -- yearbook caption.

Montana State faces Challenges

As World War II came to an end, President Renne, moved swiftly to accommodate the huge influx of Service Men returning to school under the G.I. Bill of Rights. In those years, the college doubled in size. Brick dormitories came later. Dennis Gary can remember, as a young boy, wondering what trailers had to do with college as his parents drove by on their way to downtown Bozeman. Years later, as a student at Montana State, he saw them replaced by new brick dormitories. ”In executing budget cuts for education at this school, Dr. R R. Renne has, according to our department head, made cuts in the English department which now brings the average teaching load under the present system to 16.8 hours, as against a reported legal 'maximum of 12 hours in California and a recommended maximum 15 hours by the accreditation agencies.’ As a consequence, students at MSC will be getting less than the minimum instruction in English as set by national standards. Since I am resigning for grad¬uate study at the University of Chicago next year, this will not affect me personally. However, as part of a professional obligation to students and education it is necessary for me to ask for a full Investigation by a completely impartial accrediting agency or other institution into the exact details of the teaching situation at this college. The educational environment here is not just bad, it is scandalous, and in this critical period of American education it is necessary that such scandals be brought out in the open. I do not ask that you believe me at this time but that you send a com-pletely impartial investigating agency to find out for yourself and the public what the situation actually is.”--Robert Pirsig, in a letter to Governor Nutter

Montana in Early 1960's

"Something else that ought to interest you," John says. "They were talking in the bar about Bozeman, where we're going. They said the governor of Montana had a list of fifty radical college professors at the college in Bozeman he was going to fire. Then he got killed in a plane crash." -- ZMM, pp. 103-104 At Bozeman isn't a one horse town." -- Original Caption In Memoriam Donald G. Nutter, Governor of Montana – Throughout the United States aggressive leadership has shaken our complacent attitude and has given us a sense of urgency in accomplishing national and international goals. Montana was fortunate to have one of these leaders. Governor Nutter provided the state with an attitude of awareness of all phases of state government. Perhaps there was not complete agreement in the ideas which he held or programs he proposed. This statement can be applied to any great politician. – A man with courage and conviction has always been admired and respected. Governor Nutter exemplified this type of man. He formulated his platform while campaigning and carried through with these ideas until tragedy interrupted his term. – In respect and remembrance of a great man, we dedicate this book to Governor Nutter and the characteristics of manhood he represented. – 1962 Montanan Staff

*EDITOR'S NOTE: The dates below each picture reflect the date of the yearbook it comes from, and not necessarily the date the picture was taken, although generally I would assume that they are one and the same. Site Master Henry Gurr wishes to note: Concerning a dated time sequence of [the Sarah] Vinke photos, showing the effect of maturing over the years!! Very effective . . .!! But here I have some observations and a suggestion . . . re: what is now Sarah's third photo, with her thoughtful in rocking chair: Of the four photos, she is here to me the most youthful, She has a graduated from college look -- An almost farm girl look as in her plain dress with hand home sewn decorative collar, simple non-permed hair straight back, simplest of all gold rimmed glasses, and pure smooth quite youthful clear face lily skin complexion. Yes I know it says 1948 & department chair, and the yearbook staff surely got that correct. But it happens [quite] often, that when it comes time to go to press, no up-to-date photo is in hand, so older, sometimes 5, 8, 10 YEAR OLDER PHOTOS ARE USED. You see this all over.

Editor's Thanks:
