These 12 Photos were taken by Robert Pirsig’s very own camera, as he Chris, Sylvia and John made that 1968 epic voyage upon which The Travel Narrative for Mr Pirsig’s ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘ (ZMM) book was based. Taken in 1968 along what is now known as ‘‘The ZMM Book Travel Route ‘‘ each photo scene is actually ‘‘Written-Into ‘‘ Mr. Pirsig’s book => ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘ (ZMM)

Each of the 832 photographs in these Four Albums show a scene described in the book ‘‘Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘. Each photo was especially researched and photographed along the ZMM Route to show a specific ZMM Book Travel Description Passage: This passage is shown in quote marks below the respective photo. As you look at each of these photos, you will be viewing scenes similar to those that author Pirsig, Chris, and the Sutherlands might have seen, on that epic voyage, upon which the book ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘ was based. Thus it is, that these 832 photographs are ‘‘A Color Photo Illustrated Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘. Indeed ‘‘A Photo Show Book‘‘ for ZMM. Sights & Scenes Plus Full Explanation.

Photos of Faculty, Administrators, and Students at Montana State College: 1956-1960

By Dennis Gary, BS, Montana State College, 1960; MS, University of Oregon, 1964.

Introduction

The photos on this page, collected by Dennis Gary, have been provided to help illustrate his memories of the time he spent at Montana State College (now Montana State University) from 1956 to 1960 and his experiences related to that time at MSC. During his undergraduate years at MSC, Mr. Gary interacted personally with Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance author Robert Pirsig, as well as Sarah Vinke and many other real-life people upon whom the characters in ZMM are based. Although some of the featured photos were taken before 1956, those featured in them were either present during Mr. Gary’s tenure at MSC or mentioned in Mr. Gary's MSC-related memories. These photos are meant to supplement Mr. Gary's firsthand accounts of his relationships with the people pictured here.
…Also, visitors to this webpage are encouraged to access—through the links that have been provided at the bottom of the page—the various webpages on the ZMMQ site devoted to Mr. Gary's recollections of this time at MSC.

Sarah Vinke

Sarah Vinke was a friend and a staunch supporter of Pirsig at MSC. She plays a crucial role in ZMM. It was Dr. Vinke whose question to Pirsig about teaching Quality served as the 'seed crystal' from which his concept of Quality developed. This picture was taken at Colorado State University. During Dr. Vinke's long tenure at MSC, Dennis Gary was a favorite student, and mentee, of hers. This photo shows Sarah Vinke at MSC after her return to Bozeman. Note the difference in demeanor between this photo and the one at left. Apparently, Bozeman agreed with Dr. Vinke. This photo shows the Sarah Vinke that Pirsig and Dennis Gary knew so well: relaxed, self-assured, engaging.

Jack Barsness, Wylla Barsness, Paul Grieder

Jack Barsness was a friend and contemporary of Pirsig at MSC. Professor Barsness and his wife, Wylla, appear in ZMM as guests at a party given by the DeWeeses for Pirsig and Chris. Jack's comments are featured prominently in the conversation at the party, and Pirsig says in ZMM that Jack Barsness was 'supportive of Phaedrus' in the English Department. Dennis Gary took Magazine Article Writing, Short Story Writing, and the second quarter of Major American Writers from Professor Barsness. Wylla Barsness was a friend and contemporary of Pirsig at MSC. She and her husband, Jack, appear in ZMM as guests at a party given by the DeWeeses for Pirsig and Chris. Dennis Gary does not remember ever meeting Mrs. Barsness. Paul Grieder headed the English Department during Pirsig's time at MSC, but he does not appear by name in ZMM. Professor Grieder served as Dennis Gary's advisor for English. Mr. Gary took American English Usage and the first quarter of Major American Writers from Professor Grieder.

Peter Voulkos

Peter Voulkos's work, a collection of 'large pots and vases' that Pirsig calls 'Fantastic,' is featured in ZMM. Voulkos's artwork (the last name is spelled 'Voulkas' in ZMM) adorns the home of Robert and Gennie DeWeese, at which Pirsig and Chris stay during their visit to Bozeman. Dennis Gary knew Voulkos 'in passing, but not well.' Peter Voulkos in his brother Manuel's sailor hat. Dimly seen through the screen door is Peter's mother. Peter had set up a delayed-action camera, so this is a self-portrait.

Robert DeWeese, John Parker, Verne Dusenberry

Robert DeWeese was a friend and supporter of Pirsig at MSC. Robert and Gennie DeWeese are featured prominently in ZMM. Robert DeWeese is associated with Pirsig's developing concept of Quality; and during their visit to Bozeman on the ZMM motorcycle trip, Pirsig and Chris stayed at the DeWeeses' home. Dennis Gary may have met Mr. DeWeese, but cannot recall 'for certain.'John Parker does not appear in ZMM, although he was a contemporary of Pirsig at MSC. Dr. Parker does appear in the MSC archives as supportive of Pirsig as a teacher, and is credited with delivering a paper by Pirsig at a conference. Dennis Gary took Major British Writers from Dr. Parker.Verne Dusenberry does not appear in ZMM, but he does appear in LILA. He was a friend and contemporary of Pirsig at MSC, and is credited with introducing Pirsig to peyote. Pirsig, Sarah Vinke, and Paul Grieder are acknowledged in Dusenberry's book, 'Montana Cree,' for their help with the manuscript.

President R.R. Renne, M.G. Burlingame

Roland R. Renne does not appear in ZMM, although he was President of MSC while Pirsig was teaching there. His actions are criticized in a letter from Pirsig to then Governor Nutter. Dennis Gary knew Dr. Renne and interviewed him for the college newspaper, 'The Exponent.'Merrill G. Burlingame does not appear in ZMM, although he headed the History Department while Pirsig was at MSC. Dennis Gary took Political Science from Dr. Burlingame.

Milford Frank, Bernadine Noggle, H.S. Cannon

Milford Frank does not appear in ZMM, although he was a contemporary of Pirsig at MSC. Dr. Frank headed the Education Department during Dennis Gary's student days at MSC, and Mr. Gary took several courses from Dr. Frank. Mr. Gary describes Frank as 'not one of my favorite people.'Bernadine Noggle was never at MSC and did not know Pirsig. She was Dennis Gary's department head when he taught at Klamath Union High School.H.S. Cannon was a contemporary of Sarah Vinke at MSC in 1947.

Robert Dunbar, Joe Fitch, Howard Dean, Bernard Copping

Robert Dunbar does not appear in ZMM, although he was a contemprary of Pirsig at MSC. This photo was taken at Colorado State University, where Dr. Dunbar taught with Sarah Vinke (Vinke was instrumental in getting Dr. Dunbar to come to MSC when she returned). Dennis Gary took History of Civilization and Current World Problems from Dr. Dunbar.Joe Fitch does not appear in ZMM, although he was a contemporary of Pirsig at MSC. Dennis Gary took Modern Drama from Dr. Fitch.Howard Dean does not appear, by name, in ZMM. However, he directed the alternate Freshman English Program during Pirsig's time at MSC, and was the author of that program's textbook: 'Effective Communication' (this may well be the sequence about which Pirsig writes with such vitriol in ZMM). Dennis Gary took Introduction to Literature and Modern Novel from Dr. Dean.Bernard Copping does not appear in ZMM, although he was a contemporary of Pirsig at MSC. Copping served as Treasurer at MSC and was a friend of Dennis Gary's parents, belonging to the same bridge club.

Montana State College Campus

Historic Montana Hall, with its 'huge and strange gables over old dark-brown brick' (ZMM). This is the building in which Pirsig taught, and which contained his office. It's also the place where Sarah Vinke planted 'the seed crystal' that led to Pirsig's quest for Quality. Dennis Gary had many classes here. This shot of Montana Hall is of the back of the building, from the perspective of the Gymnasium (pictured below). According to Dennis Gary, MSC students used to run a garbage can up the flagpole, causing 'much extra work for campus maintenance getting the garbage can down so they could run up the U.S. flag.'
