These 12 Photos were taken by Robert Pirsig’s very own camera, as he Chris, Sylvia and John made that 1968 epic voyage upon which The Travel Narrative for Mr Pirsig’s ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘ (ZMM) book was based. Taken in 1968 along what is now known as ‘‘The ZMM Book Travel Route ‘‘ each photo scene is actually ‘‘Written-Into ‘‘ Mr. Pirsig’s book => ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘ (ZMM)

Each of the 832 photographs in these Four Albums show a scene described in the book ‘‘Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘. Each photo was especially researched and photographed along the ZMM Route to show a specific ZMM Book Travel Description Passage: This passage is shown in quote marks below the respective photo. As you look at each of these photos, you will be viewing scenes similar to those that author Pirsig, Chris, and the Sutherlands might have seen, on that epic voyage, upon which the book ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘ was based. Thus it is, that these 832 photographs are ‘‘A Color Photo Illustrated Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘. Indeed ‘‘A Photo Show Book‘‘ for ZMM. Sights & Scenes Plus Full Explanation.

This album shows what I saw on my RETURN trip home (San Francisco California to Aiken South Carolina), Summer 2002. These 55 photos were taken along the Route of the “1849er’s Gold Rush to California” (In Reverse Direction). After I completed my ZMM Research, I RETURNED home by way of the Route of the ‘49’s Gold Rush. This route included the route of the “California Gold Rush Trail” (in Nevada & California), as well as portions of the Oregon Trail' all the way into Missouri. These 1849er’s Travel Route Photos, were taken AFTER I took those Photos shown in the above Album named “A Color Photo Illustrated ZMM Book, With Travel Route Sights & Scenes Explained”.

Enjoy 225 Photos of Flowers & Red Wing Blackbirds Along the ZMM Route. This Album of Color Photos shows every Flower and Red Wing Blackbird (RWBB) that I could “get within my camera sights!!” This was done in honor of the ZMM Narrator's emphasis of Flowers and Redwing Blackbirds in the book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”. I was very surprised to find RWBB's the entire travel route from Minneapolis to San Francisco.

Starting Monday 19 July 2004, Mark Richardson traveled the ZMM Route, on his trusty Jakie Blue motorcycle. Mark made these 59 interesting photographs of what he saw along the way. As he toured, he pondered his own life destiny (past present future), and sought to discover his own deeper personal meaning of the book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”.

The former home (~1968) of John and Sylvia Sutherland, at 2649 South Colfax Ave, Minneapolis MN, shown in 18 photos. Despite John's quite negative disparaging statements in ZMM, about their home back in Minneapolis, this same house, shown in these photos, looks to us like a wonderful, beautiful home along a very nice, quiet, shady street, in a perfectly fine Minneapolis Neighborhood!

How & Why A Digital Camera Can, FAIL To Save Photos, AND NOT Be Discovered (Until Too Late): An Object Lesson, With Precautions => To Early Discover Loss, Before It Goes Too Far.
By Henry S Gurr, August 31 2020.

... I well remember that early Monday 23 May 2019, when I arrived at The University Of Wisconsin Archives, Madison WI. The Building Doors were still locked. This gave me lots of time to look around, and take ~12 Street Scene Photos, for panorama etc. And later, once inside the Archives Work Area, t remember taking an additional ~ 5 photos of the Archives Work Area, and of course, a photo of Archive Director Dr David Null.

... For my camera normally it’s => Press-The-Button > “Click Whirr” Sound And Ready For Next” . Mostly there has not been a change from this “Normal”, so there has never been any clue that my camera could (or was), was randomly failing to save the pictures I had taken: Absolute total failure, without the slightest warning, or indication of loss.

... Unfortunately, i discovered TOO LATE, that My Camera (which seemed to be operating just fine), was randomly never saving my photos” to SD Memory Card. …. They were gone without a trace ….Just as if my “Button Press”, had never happened!! This includes ALL my photos taken, at the University of Wisconsin Archives, both outside and inside of the building,.

About 3 weeks ago, I finally got back to The Big Task Of Finish Posting My Photos From 2016 Sarah Vinke Biography Field Research Trip.
... And for several weeks now, I have been successfully posting most of these photos, all-the-while, sporadically looking everywhere (all possible nooks & crannies, many a time), for the UW Archives Photos. … I CAN’T FIND E”M.

During What Became ~A Frantic Search I Was Not Suspecting Camera Failure! … Not Even Remotely
... Only VERY, VERY SLOWLY, did the Dawning Realization Finally Arrive, AHA GPST => This is the SAME problem where, ~20 % of his photos, were randomly missing in the saved files of my Henry Gurr Book Signing Tour“, Summer 2019 !!!'' '.

NOTE WELL => This was four years later (and a different photo location): Thus of course the reason => Why it took so long to finally re-cognize The SAME problem! , when I was preparing my Photos for these Albums, in yet another, different time & context:

A DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY “OBJECT--LESSON” CAUTIONARY NOTE =>

... My Above Story Of How It Happened , shows how Baddies Can Sneak-Up On You, When You Least Suspect!

THUS => Even If Your Device Seems To Be Just Fine, You Can NOT Just Blithely Assume Your Digital Device, Is FULLY Functional, Even If It All Behavior Is Normal.

To Prevent Photo Loss or Low Quality, Keep In Mind, In ANY Work =>

A) Constantly be watchful for “Something Might Be Going Wrong”
B) Especially in Digital Devices => The Worst Failure Are => Silent, Random, & No Warning.
C) Another insight, emphasized in Robert Pirsig’s book => Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (ZMM), comes from the virtues of regular mindful Maintenance Observations. While taking photo, your thoughts AND HABITS, often should be =>
1) "Ok, its time for YOUR maintenance! The Necessity of Careful Maintenance, is a virtue, since in the process your mind will be drawn to things that need attention, that never otherwise would be notice.
2) "Even though you don't want to interrupt enjoying the scenery, or persons whom may be visiting, you must check to see if the last ~5 photos look OK in my Camera display.-
3) "Even though you are stressed, tired, and just don't feel like it, STILL DO YOUR

MAINTENANCE!” => "You must CLOSELY study several of your photos in camera display, to see that the phots are well posed, have good point of view, illumination and sun position are good. The photos show what others would appreciate. AND carefully look for “peculiar juxtapositions” professional would not allow. You may have to back & re-take certain shots, while you are still on location..

4) “When finishing up with a photo location, and before put the camera back in its Cary Case => “BE ALERT! For any additional photos needed, that were not originally planed.
5) "Like the Narrator in ZMM, you must be mindfully and actively on the lookout for evidence of other potential problems”.
D) Any other ideas, that should be added here? Please send email. My up-to-date contact info is a click on bottom or every ZMMQ Site Page.

In Henry Gurr’s Photo Album=> Why So Many Google Street Views!! ??

... As discussed in my above story “Digital Camera Failure”, many of my Photos originally intended for the ZMMQ Site Gallery Album Were, NEVER Saved Into Camera SD Memory Chip.

... With Important Photos Missing, Henry Must Be Resourceful To Find Good Alternates. Hence Google Street View (GSV), “Comes-To-The-Rescue”, as you can see in any of the following examples
http://venturearete.org/ResearchProjects/ProfessorGurr/gallery/album19/GSV_FmNParkStStepsLookintUpBascomMallSeeBascomHall?full=1

http://venturearete.org/ResearchProjects/ProfessorGurr/gallery/album19/GSV_FmStateStNE_ViewUnivWisMemorialLibrary_WithConstructEquip_OrngFence?full=1

Turning Necessity Into A Virtue!
... And in many cases Google Street View (GSV),Is better, since it The Reader (You!), can additionally =>
..A) Click on the Blue Link, To Bring Up The Current GSV, Then =>
..B) Click-Drag for 360 Degree Full Circle Panorama Viewing. Then =>
..C) Each GSV Display Screen, At Lower Left, can click to Show A Strip=Map, Of The Near-By Streets. This Strip-Map, can be Magnified (or Shrank), AND Click-Drag To Study Even More Streets Adjacent. And The GSV will move to a NEW Place, by A Mouse Click On the Map!
..D) AND .. GSV, offers you, the ability to “GSV Drive” and see
……Even more of the U Wis & Madison WI Scenery “On Down The Road”!!!
……Just click on the GSV Display, where you want the GSV to move to!!
