AN OVERALL INTRODUCTION & SUMMARY FOR METAPHOR:
Met·A·Phor: Noun:
A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable:
In The Quaker Magazine “Friends Journal”, Senior Editor Martin Kelley Says How Much We So Naturally Use Metaphor =>
…”It’s only human to turn to metaphors to describe our spiritual relationships. We talk about “nurturing he seed”, and “turning toward the light” We move along a spiritual “journey” that doesn’t necessarily involve any travel at all. Our conference themes include words like “weave”, and “motion”, and “open”. … Our GPS devices tell us we’ve “drifted off course” and need to find “a u-turn” !
Metaphors: A Creative Way.
… ”A metaphor is a creative way of describing something by comparing it to something else that is not literally true. Metaphors can help us understand complex or abstract ideas, make connections, and evoke emotions or images. For example, saying "life is a roller coaster" is a metaphor that suggests life has ups and downs, twists and turns, and excitement and fear. Metaphors are a powerful tool for writers and speakers, but they should be used carefully and avoid mixing different metaphors or using dead metaphors (like "a needle in a haystack").”
The Ohio Valley Philosophical Education Society, Gives This Excellent Summary =>
… “Metaphors provide powerful instruments of thought by comparing nascent ideas to known entities in order to bring clarity and richness to the idea struggling for existence. Being able to make the unknown known is a particular power of metaphor. “
t
METAPHOR: A Bridge Over Deep Waters.
… ''We All Use Mental Abilities Such a Metaphor, Analogy, Simile, and a Host of Similar Abilities: Besides Being Effective Method For Communication, These Are Highly Important & Powerful Thinking Tools:”
… Below are excerpts from an excellent WebPage, which says what The Human Mind can do using Metaphor. ((Bolds by HSG. ))
…”But the human capacity for metaphor-making is more than merely an ability. It's the foundation of thought itself. As psychologist and linguist Stephen Pinker states in his The Stuff of Thought, ‘Metaphor is so widespread in language that it's hard to find expressions for abstract ideas that are not metaphorical.’ “
…”All of the creative thinking techniques we teach at Idea Champions are based on the innate capacity of the human mind to make connections, find patterns, and imagine alternatives.”
…”One of these techniques involves using metaphors to give us insight into what our challenge or opportunity really IS under the surface.:

Robert Pirsig Is Master Of Metaphor & Analogy, In His Book “Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance” (ZMM):
… Although no Shakespeare, Author Robert Pirsig in his two books shows us very effective use of Metaphor & Analogy. For example =>
… In his book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”, When Robert Pirsig says “Working on the motorcycle, and working on it with care” , we need to understand that => This is a metaphor for a person “working on” oneself. Thus we see that => Mr. Pirsig’s “maintenance”. just as well refers to the process of taking care of and improving of a person’s own self.
…For a second example => As the father and son travel, they learn not only about the maintenance of actual motorcycle itself, but also (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) about themselves as well. AND as they do this, they put to practical use the principles of, science, and art in not only troubleshooting & fixing their motorcycle, but also their own lives as well. AND as a result, they both gain a lot of insight into their personalities, the cycle, and the world.
… Moreover, in a similar manner, you the reader (by metaphoric input transfer either knowingly or perhaps unknowingly with Metaphoric Bridge Connection), will in the same way, also will constructively learn about yourself and how better to interact with the world you live.
… Of course Author Robert Pirsig hopes the reader (you), will see all of his Metaphorical Bridge Connections, and Metaphorically think deeply about them, plus watching to see how these illuminate what Mr.. Pirsig is saying! … Even studying Mr.. Pirsig’s writing technique to create these “connections” will perhaps become of interest to you => In just how the action of metaphor, works in your own mind. >> To Learn More, Click Here, And AFTER Partial Fit Page Comes Up => Read A Bit To Get Oriented. Of Course Author Henry Gurr (Me) Hopes The Reader (You), Will See =>
A) That the use of Metaphor is a very powerful human ability and very powerful way to think & communicate. And
B) You will watch how wonderfully powerful and useful, are our human abilities as we actually use => 1) Analogy, 2) Metaphor And 3) Metaphoric Bridge Connections!

FURTHER DISCUSSION: In His Book, Author Robert Pirsig, Wants Us To Remember That ANY TIME There Happens To Be => A “Next Paragraph Abrupt Switch”, Either Way, Between The Chautauqua Lecture & The Travel Narrative => We Are Then To Know THAT=> ,
1) For each of the “Abrupt Switches” => Take notice and actively, poetically see the Metaphoric Bridge Connections (MBC), either way, between the a) The Chautauqua Lecture & b) The Travel Narrative, and then => ...
2) Realize these MBC’s are carefully put here by Author Robert Pirsig, for the very purpose of using & emphasizing the poetic/metaphoric content to do this =>
i) The Chautauqua Lecture to essentially & effectively ~metaphorically illuminate The Travel Narrative AND
i) The Travel Narrative to similarly ~illuminate The Chautauqua Lecture that is placed before the reader.
3) In fact, it is very likely that the physical landscape locations along the ZMM Route, were chosen for this very purpose and this very emphasis.
4) This is because these descriptions above a) & b) would effectively two-way illuminate (by MBC) the respective Chautauqua Topics AND Travel Narrative+Actions, that Mr. Pirsig wanted to present in his book.
5) For example, this ~”metaphorically illuminate”, is seen in TWO different “types” of Metaphoric Bridge Connections, which Author Robert Pirsig wants The ZMM Reader to see as follows =>
. A) In ZMM after the Narrator finishes discussing the Crisis of the Three Mathematical Geometries, there is a Next Paragraph “Abrupt Switch” to the Travel Narrative, and actions in the town of Three Forks, MT.
… B) In ZMM there are Metaphorical Telegraphs For Special Emphasis or Added Relationships” such as at The Lochsa River Canyon Idaho Campground, where The Narrator says a seeming unimportant side note => “Some birds fly up from the shadowy hill into the sunlight and I watch them until they’re out of sight. ”
…But the alert ZMM Reader must realize this is another of many very important Master Motifs, where this is => Author Robert Pirsig’s way of telling us (Master Motif Metaphorical Telegraph), what has been going wrong in the Narrator’s communication with Chris.
…And this seeming unimportant side note, is actually Author Pirsig’s way to tell us as readers, to know that he knows, that this treatment of Chris is wrong, and chooses these Master Motif ways to tell us this.
5) AND we are to feel these Metaphoric Bridge Connections (MBC) emotionally!

A) At The End Of A Very Pleasant Summer Day. 2000 South Colfax Ave, Minneapolis.
"And their things, their monster keeps eating up land and polluting their air and lakes, and there is no way to strike back at it, and hardly any way to escape it. That attitude is not hard to come to. You go through a heavy industrial area of a large city and there it all is, the technology. In front of it are high barbed-wire fences, locked gates, signs saying NO TRESPASSING, and beyond, through sooty air, you see ugly strange shapes of metal and brick whose purpose is unknown, and whose masters you will never see.”
… At the end of a pleasant summer day, none of the "sooty air… ugly strange shapes." are seen anywhere near to 2000 South Colfax Ave, Minneapolis, MN.
*******
In The Above ZMM Passage, The Narrator Takes Up One Of His Major Topic Which Negatively Inflict Us In Our Modern Times.
… These are the problems introduced by “mindless technology. And while recognizing the supreme benefits of technology, the whole of ZMM is how to not only live constructively with technology (The Godhead), but in the very midst of it, achieve a positive productive society, which efficiently (and effectively) uses natural resources, while avoiding much of the Ugly-ness, and Desolation seen in our modern cities, and especially in their Mining & Manufacturing areas.
… About this ZMM Narrator later says => "The cause of our current social crises, he would have said, is a Genetic Defect Within The Nature Of Reason Itself”. And Our Current Modes Of Rationality, Which Are Not Moving Society Forward Into A Better World. They Are Taking It Further And Further From That Better World.” ”
*******
The Discussion Of “A Genetic Defect Within The Nature Of Reason Itself,”
… This Worry, Leads To The ZMM Narrator’s Discusses Of The Problems Of “Reason + Rationality , ” Links are given to 3 ZMMQ Gallery Photos which continue this discussion. The topics centers around the ZMM Narrator’s “the ghost that underlies all of technology, all of modern science, all of Western thought. In other words, this ghost is the basis of our civilization’s primary received knowledge.
… Here We Must Realize (And By Metaphoric Bridge Connections, Keep In Mind), That Author Robert Pirsig’s Discussion In The 3 Blue Links Above, Is Because He Offers Some VERY Good Ways To Solve These Problems. …. AND At The Same Time …. Author Pirsig Provides VERY Good Reasons For Living. This Is Provided By “Quality” , The Discussion Of Which starts In ZMM Chapter 14, Page 153, And Is The Major Focus Of ZMM For The Remainder Of Author Robert Pirsig’s Book.

… '' "I can see by my watch, without taking my hand from the left grip of the cycle, that it is eight-thirty in the morning. The wind, even at sixty miles an hour, is warm and humid. When it’s this hot and muggy at eight-thirty, I’m wondering what it’s going to be like in the afternoon.
… In the wind are pungent odors from the marshes by the road.” ''

F) Another Example Of Metaphoric Bridge Connections (MBC), That Are Found In The Book “Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance” (ZMM).
… The ZMM Reader should always be alert to Author Robert Pirsig’s purposeful arrangement of MBC’s:
… For example => When Author Robert Pirsig introduces the topic of => ‘tough extreme hot weather travel conditions through extremely harsh landscape’ …. AND places this => immediately prior to the upcoming important narrative about "the classical world of Phaedrus.“ …. such as happens in the following ZMM Passage =>.
… "again the heat is so ferocious. …. This US-12 is old, bad highway. The broken concrete is tar-patched and bumpy. Road signs indicate detours ahead. On either side of the road are occasional worn sheds and shacks and roadside stands that have accumulated through the years. The traffic is heavy now.“
Metaphoric Bridge Connects To The "The broken concrete & worn sheds and shacks.“ of the Narrator’s following => "I’m just as happy to be thinking about the rational, analytical, classical world of Phædrus.“
… The ZMM Reader of the above ZMM Passage, should always be alert to notice this Author Robert Pirsig’s especial purposeful arrangement of MBC:

G) “We Are In A Herreid Western Town. …. “Everything Is More Run-Down And Mechanical-Looking.”
… .US 83, A Major North- South Truck Route, Passes Through A Town Name Herreid, SD. As Seen in ZMM here, everything Is Poetically & Metaphorically So Horrible At Herreid, SD, ZMM Author Robert Pirsig Poetically Applies As “So Very Horrible” Herreid! , because for him (and the ZMM Narrator) this town, the heat, the crummy "run-down mechanical" western town feeling, and even the road pavement itself, compounded with all the big heavy semi trucks on this road were => Altogether => Just Herreid ! (In Other Words Everything Here Is So Very “Horrible”!
Click Here For Photo & Caption For “We Are In A Herreid Western Town.” AFTER this Page Comes Up, start reading after words => ZMM Author Pirsig Poetically Applies As “So Very Horrible” .
H) Bad Lands Around Town of Marmarth, ND. In This ZMM Passage, The Narrator Dwells On Death And Killing, Which (Metaphoric Bridge Connection), “Fits” This Surrounding Very Real Physical Harsh Terrain.
… And here, ALSO notice how the town atmosphere, and town’s evident abandonment (MBC), fits the Narrators description of the surrounding harsh terrain and the “death-birth continuity” of above passage. … Even the name Marmarth poetically sounds (MBC) malicious, malformed, maladaptive, distorted, deadly, plus rhymes with harmful.
…Moreover, You Should Study How The Lived Road Experience Of The Narrator, Chris And The Sutherlands, reflects and poetically amplifies (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) the painful telling of this terrible wrenching desolate portion of Phaedrus’ life,

J) After The Top Of The Pass, The Highway US-12 Follows The Cut of the Canyon, With a Few More Twists, Steeply Down.
''' Ten Miles East of Miles City, MT You Are Looking Into The Yellowstone River Valley, And The ZMM Narrator’s
… "The cloud passes from beneath the sun and the forest of pines and small meadows gleams again, sparkling where the sunlight catches small drops from the rain. .. We reach the top of the climb dry again but cool now and stop, overlooking a huge valley and river below. .. "I think we have arrived," John says.
… Sylvia and Chris have walked into the meadow among the flowers under pines through which I can see the far side of the valley, away and below.
… I am a pioneer now, looking onto a promised land.”
Here We Need To Remember The Narrator’s =>
… “At Baker, where we stop, the thermometers are reading 108 degrees in the shade. When I take my gloves off, the metal of the gas tank is so hot I can’t touch it. The engine is making ominous knick-knicking sounds from overheating. Very bad. The rear tire has worn badly too, and I feel with my hand that it’s almost as hot as the gas tank. .. "We’re going to have to slow down," I say '' …
… And then, there is such a sense of relief, after traveling all day, and especially the last 80 miles in the grueling, torture of triple digit heat & in bright sun. The last 16 miles started in high heat of low elevation Powder River Canyon, and gradually climbed 620 feet in elevation to a relatively cooler ridge crest.
…Chris, the Sutherlands & the Narrator are elated with the change in landscape. And the prospect of cool rain. as voiced by the Narrator and sense of arrival as voiced by John Sutherland. Sylvia and Chris celebrate by venturing into the “meadows among the flowers under the pines” The mood is euphoric, relieved and resheded.
…And their sense of accomplishment is underscored by the Pioneer/Promised Land metaphor and literary "Promised Land” '''allusion that ends the passage, and ends ZMM Part 1.
…Of course, Author Robert Pirsig expects us as readers to expect (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) that things will be vastly better in this "Promised Land”, which will be in ZMM Part 2. Click Here To See ZMMQ Gallery Photo & Added Discussion.
K) The Straight Road Continues, And In The Distance We See The Water Tower Of The Nest Town. Old US-10, One Mile To Hysham, MT.
… The Narrator is deep in thought as he explains the hierarchies of the mechanics mind as he seeks the underlying form. Then suddenly, abrupt switch, the horror of a head-on collision! =>
…. "A car with a trailer coming our way is passing and having trouble getting back into his lane. I flash my headlight to make sure he sees us. He sees us but he can’t get back in. " ….“A cardboard carton flaps and rolls on the road ahead of us, and we watch it for a long time before we come to it. Fallen off somebody’s truck evidently. Now the shakes come. If we’d been in a car that would’ve been a head-on. Or a roll in the ditch.
…. The shoulder is narrow and bumpy. It’ll spill us if we take it. I’m braking, honking, flashing. Christ Almighty, he panics and heads for our shoulder! I hold steady to the edge of the road. Here he COMES! At the last moment he goes back and misses us by inches.”
… In the ZMM Narratives given in this series of photos, the student of ZMM should here note that our Author has abruptly transitioned (switched)
1) From > A routine discussion what a motorcycle mechanic is doing to trouble shoot => “knowledge of the faulty motorcycle ” [with mechanic] “ looking at underlying form.. ” with cycle’s urgent need to be fixed
2) Suddenly Abrupt Switch To => The Narrator’s “terror producing near accident "Here he COMES! At the last moment he goes back and misses us by inches.” And ending Chapter 9 with how he, Chris, & Sutherlands "order every kind of snack they’ve got.”
3) This is followed by => Chapter 10 which in a long discussion of the Processes Of Science, ending with => “ I’ve a vision of an angry continuing social crisis that no one really understands the depth of, let alone has solutions to”. … .Here Author Robert Pirsig, Wants Us To Remember That =>
….Any time there is such an abrupt juxtaposition + “Abrupt switch” like this, we are to =>
..a) Take notice and actively, poetically see the Metaphoric Bridge Connections, either way between the Chautauqua Lecture and Travel Narrative Scenery + Actions...
..b) AND we are to feel these connections emotionally !
… AFTER this photo comes up, please scroll down to Hysham MT and read following very long explanations concerning Metaphors & Metaphoric Bridge Connections.
L) A True Pirsig Pilgrim Must Generally Do What Is Stated In Robert Pirsig’s “Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance” (ZMM)., And Do So For Robert Pirsig’s Stated Reasons, AND What May Be Also Inferred From Pirsig’s General Approach.
… Thus The True Pirsig Pilgrim Should Experience The Reality Of Hiking ON The Mountain Trail: This Includes BOTH A)The Actual Physical Trail AND b) Metaphorically Experience => The ZMM Narrator’s Chautauqua On “Quality”, Enfolded Into The Narrator + Chris Mountain Climb Narrative.
… The ZMM Narrator at first comfortably follows the established paths of civilization, into the High Country, that are already there and given to him. This is on NFS Official Trails, continuing for some 5 miles from the Cottonwood Canyon National Forest Trail Head, to about half mile into Fox Creek Canyon.
… But at some point, he must leave the established paths, and forge new ones, into absolutely new un-explored territory!! And it does not matter how rough or tough or dangerous, he must plow ahead “Following the Track of Quality”, where-ever it takes him!!
… The ZMM Narrator Reports his gradual efforts to get Quality clear in his mind, and the grand culmination (Narrative Climax), of this stage of his Pioneering Efforts are Metaphorically indicated at the Top of The Mountain, when Chris Shouts “Blue Sky”!!!
… NOTE1: On this WebPage, there are a total of 9 discussions of Metaphor.
… NOTE2:: For this part of ZMM, I don’t think Metaphor is mentioned in “The Guide Book To ZMM”.

…EXAMINING1 MORE CLOSELY THE ZMM NARRATOR’S => “Good Old Reality, ” Which Took Place Along => A Dirt Logging Road, Forested Mountains, Lochsa River Canyon, ID. ….
“.... I remember the dream again and the words "I’ll see you at the bottom of the ocean" and wonder about them. But pines and sunlight are stronger than any dream and the wondering goes away. Good Old Reality. ”
…Many places in ZMM the Narrator depends on the “grounding” of everyday experience, to hold steady his grip on mental stability. Here this is seen in his explicit statement “Good old reality ” .
…In fact, as is said in the passage above, the Narrator uses the “reality” of bright sun illuminated forest to literally “dis-spell” the lingering dream, and get back to “Good old reality”
…Somehow, from my many readings of ZMM, I got the idea that the phrase “Good old reality” (or its equivalent), occurred many times in ZMM.
…However, in process of writing the captions (above and previous photo), I decided to find how many more of this phrase: So … I did a ZMM Full Text > Edit > Find > reality

…EXAMINING2 MORE CLOSELY THE ZMM NARRATOR’S => “Good Old Reality, ” Which Took Place Along => A Dirt Logging Road, Forested Mountains, Lochsa River Canyon, ID. ….
“I get out of the sleeping bag. It’s cold and I get dressed quickly. Chris is asleep. I walk around him, climb over a fallen treetrunk and walk up the logging road. To warm myself I speed up to a jog and move up the road briskly. .. Good, good, good, good, good. The word keeps time with the jogging. Some birds fly up from the shadowy hill into the sunlight and I watch them until they’re out of sight. Good, good, good, good, good. Crunchy gravel on the road. Good, good. Bright yellow sand in the sun. Good, good, good. .. These roads go on for miles sometimes. Good, good, good. Eventually I reach a point where I’m really winded. The road is higher now and I can see for miles over the forest. .. Good.. ”
…This whole passage emphasizes Quality of being alive => “Good, good, good, good, good.” And implies essentially that the Narrator's continuous mental stability, depends on “Good old reality.”
….If fact, as said in the passage above (AND the passage in the Previous Photo), The Narrator uses the “reality” of the => … “speed up to a jog and move up the road briskly in the bright, cheerful, sun illuminated forest”, to literally “dis-spell” any lingering dream.
….Yes, indeed => “Good old reality.”

CONTINUED FROM THE ABOVE TWO DISCUSSIONS => GIVING ATTENTION TO “MASTER MOTIFS” IN ZMM =>
… BELOW FOUR 1), 2), 3),4), Further Examples of Robert Pirsig’s MASTER MOTIFS => Are Discussed In Blue Linked Album Captions:
…We See In Below Italic, Author Robert Pirsig’s Way Of Telling Us (Metaphorical Telegraph), What Has Been Happening To The Narrator’s Communication With Chris.
… For example, after no constructive communication between Chris & the Narrator, ZMM Narrator later says => “It comes up” “Some birds fly up from the shadows into sunlight”, but then, “goes out of sight”,
…In Studying This Above ZMM Passage, I Realized Four AHA Insights Concerning => “Some Birds Fly Up From The Shadows Into Sunlight”, But Then, “Goes Out Of Sight”, Which The ZMM Narrator Says After No Constructive Communication Between Chris The ZMM Narrator Has Happen!
…
1) Now WHY Should Author Robert Pirsig Write Into ZMM => The Narrator’s Inability To Communicate With Chris, As A Major Thread In ZMM Book?

2) Chris And The Narrator Arrive At Their Campsite After Dark.
… .“ it’s dark out. We follow the headlight beam down a secondary road toward Oregon to a little sign saying "BROWNLEE CAMPGROUND," which appears to be in a draw of the mountains. In the dark it’s hard to tell what sort of country we’re in. We follow a dirt road under trees and past underbrush to some camper’s pull-ins. No one else seems to be here. When I shut the motor off and we unpack I can hear a small stream nearby. Except for that and the chirping of some little bird there’s no sound.”
…FATHER & SON RELATIONSHIP: A Continuation Of Motif Ideas From The Above => Since These Ideas Also Apply To The Above, also Master Motifs, are these =>” CHIRPING OF SOME LITTLE BIRD … THERE’S NO SOUND.”
….In the above passage, The ZMM Narrator says, “I can hear a small stream nearby. Except for that and the chirping of some little bird there’s no sound.“
…a) Here the perceptive ZMM Reader should REMEMBER the Previous Album Photo Caption (At DeWeese Home, Blue Link Above) => And pop to attention when reading at => “the chirping of some little bird there’s no sound...“
AND
…b) Apply this “REMEMBER” when reading the Narrator’s Seeming Useless, Out of Place Seeming Pointless Phrase, such as, “chirping of some little bird … there’s no sound.“
…. MUST KEEP IN MIND => In ZMM, There Are NO Useless, Wasted Words! …
…c) In This Case (& Others Similar), The Reader Should “Pause And Think Beyond The “Ordinary”! … And then realize this passage, is like OTHER ZMM Phrases such as => “In the distance a single bird cries plaintively.”
…. ….In Other Words => OK! YES!! This Fits The Master Motif Situation!!!
…..And, at such occurrences, we should immediately think of “MASTER MOTIF IDEAS”, as explained in => “The Guidebook To ZMM.”

3) FATHER & SON RELATIONSHIP: A Continuation Of Motif Ideas From The Above => : “The Chirping Of Some Little Bird … There’s No Sound.”
… [ "No one else seems to be here. When I shut the motor off and we unpack I can hear a small stream nearby. Except for that and the chirping of some little bird there’s no sound”. ]
… . "I like it here," Chris says.
… "It’s very quiet," I say.
… "Where will we be going tomorrow?"
… "Into Oregon." I give him the flashlight and have him shine it where I’m unpacking.
… "Have I been there before?"
… "Maybe, I’m not sure."
… I spread out the sleeping bags, and put his on top of the picnic table. The novelty of this appeals to him. This night there’ll be no trouble sleeping. Soon I hear deep breathing that tells me he’s already asleep.”
…… FATHER & SON RELATIONSHIP:
… In the above ZMM Passage, we see how again and again Chris tries to “reach out” to his Dad by asking a series of questions. AND we see how at best, the Narrator’s answers to Chris are Vague Non-Answers.
… The Narrator saying "the chirping of some little bird there’s no sound.”, may seem an unimportant side note. However this should be (Master Motif Metaphoric Bridge Connection) should be understood as => Author Robert Pirsig is telling us that Chris is trying to communicate to his Father, but there is practically no return communication from the Father.
… Metaphorically this => "the chirping of some little bird there’s no sound.”, is to be understood as meaning => Chris is trying to communicate .... but there is practically no communication from the Father.

4) FATHER & SON RELATIONSHIP: Continued From Above => The Narrator Awakes To A Cold Grey Predawn. 8 Miles Northwest of Cambridge, ID.
… In the above ZMM passage, we saw how again and again, how Chris is trying to ~”Reach out” to his Dad, by asking a series of questions. But The Narrator only replies with Vague ”Non-Answers”. This is a major point of The ZMM Novel => The Narrator’s inabilities to relate to his son, which have NO answer and NO way to improve!

P) Further Discussion Of Metaphoric Bridge Connections (MBC) In Robert Pirsig's Book Is At This Gallery Photo =>
… This Scene of Frost, Dry Volcanic Dust, Struggling Plant Life, And An Old Weathered Stump, Is Almost Identical To Author Robert Pirsig’s Own Summer 1968 Photo. 5.8 Miles North of La Pine, OR.
… . “Chris is still asleep and we won’t be able to go anywhere until the air warms up. Good time to get the cycle tuned. I work loose the knob on the side cover over the air filter, and underneath the filter withdraw a worn and dirty roll of field tools. My hands are stiff with the cold and the backs of them are wrinkled. Those wrinkles aren’t from the cold though. At forty that’s old age coming on. I lay the roll on the seat and spread it open . . . there they are. . . . like seeing old friends again. .. I hear Chris, glance over the seat and see that he’s stirring but doesn’t get up. He’s evidently just rolling in his sleep. After a while the sun gets warmer and my hands aren’t as stiff as they were. .. I was going to talk about some of the lore of cycle repair, the hundreds of things you learn as you go along, which enrich what you’re doing not only practically but esthetically. But that seems too trivial now, though I shouldn’t say that. .. But now I want to shift into another direction, which completes his story. I never really completed it because I didn’t think it would be necessary. But now I think it would be a good time to do that in what time remains.
… The metal of these wrenches is so cold it hurts the hands. But it’s a good hurt. It’s real, not imaginary, and it’s here, absolutely, in my hand.”
To See Metaphoric Bridge Connection.
… Pay attention to the Narrator’s => “a worn and dirty roll of field tools. My hands are stiff with the cold and the backs of them are wrinkled. Those wrinkles aren’t from the cold though. At forty that’s old age coming on. I lay the roll on the seat and spread it open . . . there they are. . . . like seeing old friends again. …” which precedes his " completes his [Phaedurs] story. I never really completed it because I didn’t think it would be necessary. But now I think it would be a good time to do that in what time remains.” .
EXPLANATION:
… These good reliable “tools”, “like old friends” …”not imaginary” … ”absolutely real” ...are what (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) the Narrator will need as he tells the VERY difficult story of Phaedrus’ (same as Author Pirsig’s) mental break down at the University of Chicago, even calling it insane.
… ALSO pay attention to the Narrator’s added “juxtaposition of => “I hear Chris, glance over the seat” . I believe Author Robert Pirsig added this phrase here, as a (2nd Metaphoric Bridge Connection), because, again => Good reliable “tools”, “like old friends” …”not imaginary” … ”absolutely real” ...are what (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) the Narrator this is what he will need as he tries to work out his current, and growing problem with Chris, that the Narrator mentions next =>
… “The answer doesn’t seem to satisfy him. But he can’t seem to say what’s wrong with it.”
… “A sudden despair wave hits, like that at dawn. I lie to him. That’s what’s wrong.”
… "We [says Chris] just keep going and going,"
Here in Oregon, and continuing along much the California Pacific Coast, Chris sees NO point in their continuing travel.

Q) A Large Round Table With Somewhat of a Crack In It. Cobb Hall, University of Chicago, Chicago, IL.
… “During the middle of the hour he noticed that this enormous table had a huge crack that ran right across it near the middle. It looked as though it had been there for years, … "
…As viewed by the Narrator (and Phaedrus), the “huge crack“ symbolizes (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) serious problems in the philosophy system of Aristotle, AND corresponding serious problems in the way philosophy was being taught at U. Chicago.

… “The rain comes down more heavily now and we stop to snap on the face mask to the helmet. Then we go again at moderate speed. I watch for chuckholes, sand and grease slicks.”
…In rain especially, The Narrator must watch for very real road hazards.
…Similarly, Metaphoric Bridge Connection, these echo/symbolize the very real hazards Phaedrus must watch for at The University of Chicago!
…We as ZMM readers, must notice and mentally realize the importance of => This abrupt brief switch, from The Narrator’s Chautauqua discussion. to the ongoing Travel Narrative, that is inserted here.

… The road has become so dark I have to turn on my headlight now to follow it through these mists and rain.”
…;;(End Chapter. 29.)
NOTE1: By abruptly ending Chapter 29 here, Author Robert Pirsig is telling us of the utter finality and near permanence of his words just finished!
NOTE2: Near the end of the above ZMM Passage, There is a very good Metaphoric Bridge Connection, which has the typical => Next Paragraph “Abrupt Switch” =>

AN OVERALL INTRODUCTION & SUMMARY FOR MOTIF AND MASTER MOTIF:
Mo tif: Noun:
…A decorative design or pattern. [Most especially, if on purpose, is repeated many times for emphasis.]
…Design, pattern, decoration, figure, shape, logo, monogram, device, emblem, ornament, "T-shirts featuring spiral motifs"
…A distinctive feature or dominant idea in an artistic or literary composition. "the nautical motif of his latest novel"
…Theme, idea, concept, subject, topic, leitmotif, element, motive, trope.
…MUSIC: A short succession of notes producing a single impression; a brief melodic or rhythmic formula out of which longer passages are developed. "the motif in the second violin is submerged by the first violin's countermelody"
Motif: Excerpt From Wikipedia =>
…”A motif is any distinctive feature or idea that recurs across a story; often, it helps develop other narrative elements such as theme or mood. A narrative motif can be created through the use of imagery, structural components, language, and other elements throughout literature.” !
What is a Motif? By Liz Delf and Marisa Williams, Gives This Excellent Summary =>
… “A motif is a repeated pattern—an image, sound, word, or symbol that comes back again and again within a particular story. Ok, that’s simple enough. The larger question is WHY? A repeated pattern or motif can do several things:”
…:First and foremost, it draws our attention to it. If you see something repeating, underline it and consider it carefully. Ask yourself: WHY does the author want me to notice this image or pattern? A motif can highlight something about a character, to help us understand them better, or it can help to establish the mood of the story.”
…”Often, motifs reinforce the themes of the story. To be clear, motif is not the same as theme—but motifs can be the breadcrumbs that lead us to discover the theme, or support and reinforce it.”
…”Finally, motifs can evoke other moments in the story to remind us of the connection between scenes.
Let’s look at a couple examples for a better sense of what this means on the page:
…[For example:] A pattern, of light and dark, darkness and light, appears throughout the story. It comes up so often that we start to pay attention, to track it, to notice the different contexts and lines in which it’s used.
In [a] story, the motif of darkness and light reinforces the themes of suffering and salvation, imprisonment and freedom. The swinging subway light is not a direct symbol for salvation in this passage, but the ongoing pattern of contrasts reinforces those bigger ideas and asks us to trace them throughout the story.”

'The Above Has Introduced “What Is A Motif”. But, The Idea Of A “Master Motif” Comes From => "The Guidebook To "Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance". ''
…
EXPLANATION of => “Dark Shadows, Bright Light. .... Hot Sun .... In Shade, Suddenly Cold.”
….These Four ZMM Phrases (And MANY Others Similar) are “Master Motifs” as emphasized in -> “The Guidebook To ZMM” =>|
EVEN MORE MOTIF EXPLANATION: In The Following ZMM Phrase => “WIND” Which Is Often Mentioned As Warnings or Announcements.
Robert Pirsig Is Master Of Motif, In His Book “Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance” (ZMM):
… Although no Shakespeare, Author Robert Pirsig in his two books shows us very effective use of Motifs, throughout his book. For example =>
In his book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”, When Robert Pirsig says
A) “chirping of some little bird … there’s no sound.“
B) “In the distance a single bird cries plaintively.”
C) “Some birds fly up from the shadowy hill into the sunlight and I watch them until they’re out of sight.” , we need to understand that => This is Author Robert Pirsig’s way of telling us that => There has been a serious failure of communication between the father and son.
Other examples are =>
D) “Dark Shadows, Bright Light. .... Hot Sun .... In Shade, Suddenly Cold.”
E) “Wind” and “Listening To The Wind”
******
…Of course Author Robert Pirsig hopes the reader (you), will notice his Motifs, and Metaphorically think deeply about them, plus watching to see how these illuminate what Mr.. Pirsig is saying! … Even studying Mr.. Pirsig’s writing technique to create these “connections” will perhaps become of interest to you => In just how the action of his Master Motifs, work in your own mind. >>
Of Course Author Henry Gurr (Me) Hopes The Reader (You), Will See =>
A) That the use of Motif is a very powerful human ability and very powerful way to think & communicate. And
B) You will notice how wonderfully powerful and useful, are our human abilities as we actually Author Robert Pirsig’s => Master Motifs! And
C) You will learn how to come alert when Author Robert Pirsig sets before your eyes a NEW Master Motif.

******************************************
The First “Wind” In Robert Pirsig's Book. By Route 55 ~1 Mile Northwest of Buffalo, MN.
… "I can see by my watch, without taking my hand from the left grip of the cycle, that it is eight-thirty in the morning. The wind, even at sixty miles an hour, is warm and humid. When it’s this hot and muggy at eight-thirty, I’m wondering what it’s going to be like in the afternoon”
… “In the wind are pungent odors from the marshes by the road.” .
… In His Book “Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance,” (ZMM)., Author Robert Pirsig, Wants Us To Remember ' ,
1) That ANY TIME There Happens To Be => A repeated phrase, such as “=> “Wind” OR “Listening To The Wind” We Are To Automatically Come To Attention & Realize That => Author Robert Pirsig Has The NEXT Repeat of a Motif, And THEN, Actively Think What He Wants Us To Seel And then =>
2) Realize these Master Motifs are carefully put here by Author Robert Pirsig, for the very purpose of using & emphasizing the poetic/metaphoric content of these.
3) And THEN study, and even enjoy, how above 1) & 2) illuminate and expand for each next repeat of the Master Motif.

B) The Wind Ripples The Grass & Tall Dandelions That Color the Roadside. Following Rt-55 1.5 Miles Northwest of Paynesville, MN.
… "The road winds on and on - we stop for rests and lunch, exchange small talk, and settle down to the long ride. The beginning fatigue of afternoon balances the excitement of the first day and we move steadily, not fast, not slow. .. We have picked up a southwest side wind, and the cycle cants into the gusts, seemingly by itself, to counter their effect.”
Above please especially notice these ZMM Narrator’s words => "The cycle cants into the gusts, seemingly by itself, to counter their effect.”
… AND then realize =>
1) In ZMM book “Wind” is a Master Motif as mentioned in “The Guide Book To ZMM”. And
2) Here Author Robert Pirsig wants the reader to come alert. => What the Narrator says about the cycle “cants” to the external forces of the wind, may seem an unimportant side note.
…However, a seeming unimportant side note should early warn that this statement (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) saying that “external forces” coming will play out in an upcoming really bad thunder and “ghostly” illuminated lightning! All of which are quite significant.

… "The sun angles toward the cloud, which now has grown downward to touch the horizon above us, in which there are trees, pines, and a cold wind comes down with pine smells from the trees. The flowers in the meadow blow in the wind and the cycle leans a little and we are suddenly cool. .. I look at Chris and he is smiling. I am smiling too. .. Then the rain comes hard on the road with a gust of earth-smell from the dust that has waited for too long and the dust beside the road is pocked with the first raindrops. .. This is all so new. And we are so in need of it, a new rain. My clothes become wet, and goggles are spattered, and chills start and feel delicious.”

….“Everything is so intense in this sunlight. Dark shadows, bright light. Dark blue sky. The sun is bright and hot when we’re in it, but when we pass under trees along the road, it’s suddenly cold.
EXPLANATION of => “Dark Shadows, Bright Light. .... Hot Sun .... In Shade, Suddenly Cold.”
….These Four ZMM Phrases (And MANY Others Similar) are “Master Motifs” as emphasized in -> “The Guidebook To ZMM” =>
….Here and especially in the ZMM Narrator’s ‘Master Motif’ of => “The High Country” of the Mountains ahead …. When you read the Narrator's “Master Motifs” of “dark sky“, you should realize that this means a "black-blue sky", which is almost no sky at all, especially straight up.
….This kind of sky happens at very high altitude and especially when the atmosphere is devoid of moisture. This sky condition lets in the searing illumination of the brilliant sun.
…. The Sun’s Super Bright Areas, vividly contrast with ~Totally Black Shadows! Such contrast is just like photos taken in outer space. Such conditions allow us (and The ZMM Narrator) to "search-light" examine closely everything, including the Motifs of =>
…..a) The “pinpoints of color in the flowers, rivulets of snow melt,” and other mountain scenery along the road.
…. b) And most ESPECIALLY The ZMM Narrator’s discussion of The Philosophy(s) of “The High Country” .
…..c) AND of course the Narrator’s “High Country of The Mind!”, is another ‘Master Motif’’ !
…
…. Many Times On The Road (And Photos) Ahead => The ZMM Narrator Will Come Back To This “Dark Shadows, Bright Light. Dark Blue Sky. .... Hot .... Suddenly Cold.” Most Especially => In His ”High Country”, AND => In His ”High Country Of The Mind”, which of course means The ZMM Narrator’s High Philosophy Discussions!.
…...This emphasis is especially evident in conjunction with the ZMM Narrator’s "tunnel of snow" shown in a Forthcoming Photo..

… ….. A sudden cross-gust of cold air comes heavy with the smell of pines, and soon another and another, and as we approach Red Lodge I’m shivering.” ''
EXPLANATION FOR WIND MOTIF =>
… You should especially study the narrator’s abrupt shift to his words, saying THREE sudden effects of the wind, in his => “sudden cross-gust of cold air …. and soon another and another“
… Then add to this, the fear connotation of “I’m shivering.“
These are Master Motifs, but with MUCH BIGGER than ordinary emphasis! We are supposed to wonder what major “fearful arrival” is being announced by the included words => “The wind” This two word phrase, is pointedly brought up 22 times in ZMM! And thus “Wind” is another master motif, for you to begin looking for in your reading of ZMM!

… "Sylvia puts her hand on John’s arm. I am conscious of the sounds of the river rushing past boulders below and a fragrance in the night wind. J) A New Master Motif, Which The ZMM Narrator Says Comes To His Mind Many Times. At Exit Ramp I-90, The Entrance To East Main Street, Bozeman, MT.
…. The ZMM Narrator’s Statement =>
‘To travel is better than to arrive’ comes back to mind again and stays. We have been traveling and now we will arrive. For me a period of depression comes on when I reach a temporary goal like this and have to reorient myself toward another one. In a day or two John and Sylvia must go back and Chris and I must decide what we want to do next. Everything has to be reorganized.“
…As you read the Narrator’s above passage, did you recognize a potential ZMM Master Motif? => “To travel is better than to arrive.“ … But paradoxically this phrase is used only twice in ZMM.

M) THE COMPLETION OF => MASTER MOTIF 5 OF 5 => “Wind” or “Listening To The Wind”. At The DeWeese Home, 14190 Cottonwood Canyon Rd, Gallatin Gateway, MT.
In The Previous Photo The Narrator Says He Was =>
….”I’ve been trying to work them out in my mind as we rode out here —which is probably why I sound so primed on all this stuff… It’s all so huge and difficult… Like trying to travel through these mountains on foot.”
IMPORTANT TO NOTICE RE ABOVE PASSAGE =>:….
…From time of the Narrator saying this at the DeWeese home, until we see three days later that => The ZMM Narrator will continue his “So Huge and Difficult” Thinking Very Hard =>
A) As To Just What Exactly IS Quality?“…
B) As He (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) Climbing Very Hard & With Difficulty, The Mountain On Foot With Chris:
….AND, we see that => Their Whole Physical Mountain Climb Metaphorically Bridge Connects To & Illuminates => The Narrator’s .” huge and difficult.” thinking process, as they climb. The Narrator’s “So Huge and Difficult” Thinking is illustrated in the Mountain Climb Climax Narrative as follows =>
….” Quality is not a thing. It is an event.
… Warmer.
… It is the event at which the subject becomes aware of the object.
… And because without objects there can be no subject—because the objects create the subject’s awareness of himself—Quality is the event at which awareness of both subjects and objects is made possible.
… Hot.
… Now he knew it was coming.
… This means Quality is not just the result of a collision between subject and object. The very existence of subject and object themselves is deduced from the Quality event. The Quality event is the cause of the subjects and objects, which are then mistakenly presumed to be the cause of the Quality!
… Now he had that whole damned evil dilemma by the throat. The dilemma all the time had this unseen vile presumption in it, for which there was no logical justification. that Quality was the effect of subjects and objects. It was not! He brought out his knife.
… "The sun of quality," he wrote, "does not revolve around the subjects and objects of our existence. It does not just passively illuminate them. It is not subordinate to them in any way. It has created them. They are subordinate to it!
… And at that point, when he wrote that, he knew he had reached some kind of culmination of thought he had been unconsciously striving for over a long period of time.
… "Blue sky!" shouts Chris.”

N) Continued From Above: Chris & The ZMM Narrator Start Their “Mountain Climb”. View North: Cottonwood Canyon Near the DeWeese Homestead. Cottonwood Canyon Rd, Gallatin Gateway, MT.
… . "The wind coming down from the snowfields up above sounds for a long time throughout the house. It grows loud and high as if in hope of sweeping the whole house, all of us, away into nothing, .... ”
… . "I keep listening to the wind," I say. I add, "I think when the Sutherlands have left, Chris and I should do some climbing up to where that wind starts. I think it’s time he got a better look at that land.”
… .Speaking To Robert And Gennie DeWeese At The Close Of Next To Last Chapter Of ZMM Part II, The Narrator speaks of => “Listening To The Wind”, and For-Sees A Foray Into The Mountains..
… .AND as Emphasized In The Previous Album For The Photos Of ZMM Part 2, you should especially think => Master Motif !! => “WIND” & “LISTENING TO THE WIND”
… NOTE1: On this WebPage, there are a total of 11 discussions of “Wind” which you can find by > Do > Top > Edit > Find > …wind … (NOTE: Please ignore the last of the 6, since these are less important. )
… NOTE2: On this WebPage, there are a total of 6 discussions of “Metaphor” which you can find by > Do > Top > Edit > Find > …metaphor
… (NOTE3: Please especially notice discussion of "partridge”
Here the perceptive ZMM Reader should REMEMBER the Previous Album Photo Caption (At DeWeese Home, Blue Link Above) =>
a) And pop to attention when reading at => “the chirping of some little bird there’s no sound...“
AND
b) Apply this “REMEMBER” when reading the Narrator’s Seeming Useless, Out of Place Seeming Pointless Phrase, such as, “chirping of some little bird … there’s no sound.“
http://venturearete.org/ResearchProjects/ProfessorGurr/gallery/album08
N)cont: MUST KEEP IN MIND => In ZMM, There Are NO Useless, Wasted Words! …
… "Below us and miles away beyond the forested slopes and the fields beyond them is the Gallatin Valley. At one corner of the valley is Bozeman. A grasshopper jumps up from the rock and soars down and away from us over the trees.”
... "We made it," Chris says. He is very happy. I am still too winded to answer. I take off my boots and socks which are soggy with sweat and set them out to dry on a rock. I them meditatively as vapors from them rise up toward the sun.” [End Chapter 20.]
…When reading the above ZMM passage (& Others Similar), the ZMM Enthusiast should “Pause and Think Beyond The “Ordinary”! … And then realize this passage, is like OTHER ZMM Phrases such as => “In the distance a single bird cries plaintively.” requires the reader to make Metaphoric Bridge Connections and possibly also look for Master Motif Situations. => ALSO
A) The reader should wonder what Author Robert Pirsig wants us (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) to make of => "… stare at them meditatively as vapors from them rise up toward the sun.” …
B) The reader should also wonder about “Grasshopper”!
More Here =>
…And AFTER The Blue Link Below Comes Up > At Top > Do > Edit Find Grasshopper THEN read the surrounding words. You will find FOUR “grasshopper” and ONE “Metaphorical”.
Click Here To See ZMMQ Gallery Photo & Further Discussion Of “No Wasted Words In ZMM”.
…Of course if you want to see a Medium Sized Photo, Right Click on the Small Photo, and open in a new tab.
O) Here Is My One Photo That Shows the Road Slightly Curving Around The Giant Rock. Fifteen Miles West Of The Town Of Lolo, MT.
… “We’re headed southwest, have picked up a tail wind, and we feel better because of it. The road starts to wind up into the pass. …All traces of the east are gone now, at least in my imagination. All the rain here comes from Pacific winds and all the rivers and streams here return it to the Pacific. We should be at the ocean in two or three days.”
My ZMM Route Research Notes say “Gusty Headwind”. This is opposite the narrator’s reported wind direction.
http://venturearete.org/ResearchProjects/ProfessorGurr/gallery/album08/110_1033c
P) This Gravel Trail Is Very Likely Chris’s Path Of Return. Colgate Lick Rest Area, Lochsa River Canyon, ID.
… "Later the crunch of gravel tells me Chris is coming back down the trail. He didn’t go very far. When he arrives he says, "Let’s go." We retie the pack, which has started to shift a little, and then move out on the highway. The sweat from sitting there cools suddenly from the wind.
… We’re still stuck on that screw and the only way it’s going to get unstuck is by abandoning further examination of the screw according to traditional scientific method. That won’t work. What we have to do is examine traditional scientific method in the light of that stuck screw.”
… The Narrator says a seeming unimportant side note => “We retie the pack, which has started to shift a little” But the alert ZMM Reader must realize this is just previous to his to get unstuck is by abandoning further examination of the screw”
… So this seeming unimportant side note, is actually Author Pirsig’s way to tell us as readers (Metaphoric Bridge Connection to see the events of the Travel Narrative to illuminate the Chautauqua Discussion, and conversely.
… Click Here To See ZMMQ Gallery Photo & Further Discussion Of Metaphoric Bridge Connection between the ZMM Narrator’s a) Events of the Travel Narrative and b) The Chautauqua Discussion, and conversely.
Q) This Single Tree Is Human Planted and Irrigated. Otherwise, This Shows A Typical View of the Treeless, Dry Grassy Rounded Hills Seen From the Road. Brownlee Dam Reservoir & Lake, Snake River Canyon, Border of ID & OR.
… "Soon we’re on the road again, which twists and turns. We stem down into an enormous canyon with high white bluffs on either side. The wind freezes. The road comes into some sunlight which seems to warm me right through the jacket and sweater, but soon we ride into the shade of the canyon wall again where again the wind freezes. This dry desert air doesn’t hold heat. My lips, with the wind blowing into them, feel dry and cracked.
… Farther on we cross a dam and leave the canyon into some high semidesert country. …. ”

END ROBERT PIRSIG’S MASTER MOTIF “WIND”.
THE FOLLOWING IS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT AUTHOR ROBERT PIRSIG In Robert Pirsig’s Book =>
A) In “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” (ZMM), We Are Shown How Best To Work With (And Within) Our Own God Given Psychological And Material Resources.
… For example, the role of the “flash of insight,” “analogy”, and “metaphor”, are regularly included in the flow of this book’s narrative, shown (by actual real world circumstances), to be fundamental to human thinking and learning. Author Pirsig points out how proper learning is often prevented.
… You may read more about how ZMM was applied in my Physics Classes and read samples of these students own writing here (link given):

B) Robert Pirsig’s Book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” (ZMM), Is Really MANY Books!
1) A story of a man in search of himself.
2) A suspense/mystery novel.
3) An autobiography.
4) A father and son story.
5) A travelogue.
6) A book about "living in the now". That's the Zen part.
7) A book about right living & Quality living.
8) A How-To-Guide, for building and achieving your own values.
9) A book about university education and good writing, with insightful & powerful use of analogy & metaphor. (And an example of good writing, despite complex topics sometimes.)
10) A Self-Help (or Self-Improvement) Book, which accomplishes 6) thru 9) above.
11) A book with the beginnings of a philosophy of mind, using the brain’s abilities to associate, use metaphor, and find solutions! This is through the ability to instantly see what is good and of value, what Pirsig calls Quality: As you will learn in this document, this ability is built into us from the very beginnings! Thus since the beginning of life on earth, the ability to find best (or near best) brain solutions, was most likely to increase biological fitness

E) Writer Wm DeHaas Says => “Although ZMM Is Not Explicitly About Landscape, I Read It As A Narrative In Landscape”.
… To appreciate this book, the reader should see => ZMM Is The Carrier Of Flow Of Thoughts …. Like A Landscape Carries A Flow Of Motorcycles. ….
… A Landscape Is A Metaphor For A Book [In This Case Robert Pirsig’s “Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance” (ZMM), Where => ]

THE FOLLOWING IS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON HOW AUTHOR ROBERT PIRSIG EXPECTS TO READER TO MAKE Metaphoric Bridge Connections.
This Is A Listing Of Major Topics That Are Taken Up In JUST THE SECOND TEXT PAGE OF CHAPTER 1 Of Robert Pirsig’s “Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance” (ZMM).
… One Way Or Another These Topics Are Subsequently (Some Extensively) Discussed In ZMM’s Pages: Many Of These Paragraphs Are Essentially “Introductory”, And Are There => To Tell The Reader What Topics The Remainder Of The Book Is About. And Then When Pirsig Later Takes Up Any These Topics, The Reading There, Is Illuminated By Metaphoric Bridge Connection.
… This following list is made from Author Robert Pirsig own words taken from the second text page of his book. Mr. Pirsig discusses an assortment of topics in ZMM opening chapter, and these (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) relate to topics expanded on in later chapters. We see that Mr. Pirsig (even on the second text page of his book), not only briefly mentions his Major Topics, but also the nature, style, and approach, for the rest of his book.
… Suggestion: If you have some time, pull out your paper copy of ZMM, and read starting at the beginning, to see how Author Robert Pirsig does this, so nice and compact!
… AND send me an email if you see more items that need to be added to the following, or you don’t agree with mine.
Mr. Pirsig’s Second Text Page Of His Book, Separated Into Topics, With [Added Comments] by henry Gurr.
(1) Plans are deliberately indefinite, more to travel than to arrive anywhere. We are just vacationing. '' [A good way for productive learning AND a good method for discovery of good new ideas & good ways of doing things. ]
(2) Secondary roads are preferred. Paved county roads are the best, state highways are next. Freeways are the worst. [The ZMM Narrator introduces the topic of what is good, and wants us to notice the reasons why. This topic is continued in (3) &(4) next down.]
(3) We want to make good time, but for us now this is measured with emphasis on "good" rather than "time" and
(4) when you make that shift in emphasis the whole approach changes. Twisting hilly roads are long in terms of seconds but are much more enjoyable on a cycle where you bank into turns and don’t get swung from side to side in any compartment. Roads with little traffic are more enjoyable, as well as safer, & no billboards . Roads free of drive-ins and are better, roads where groves and meadows and orchards and lawns come almost to the shoulder, where kids wave to you when you ride by,
() '' where people look from their porches to see who it is, where
(5) [It is along such rural roads that => ] when you stop to ask directions or information the answer tends to be longer than you want rather than short, where people ask where you’re from and how long you’ve been riding. [This is what happens in what the ZMM Narrator calls “Secondary America” as opposed to the Narrator’s “Primary America”. ]
(6) It was some years ago that my wife and I and our friends first began to catch on to these roads. [The problem of blindness to what is “really there”, and sometimes it takes many “exposures”, before you can begin to “see” what is “really there”.]
(7) We took them [these rural roads] once in a while for variety or for a shortcut to another main highway, and each time the scenery was grand and we left the road with a feeling of relaxation and enjoyment. [This feeling of relaxation and enjoyment, is often a very good guide (and indicator) as to when you are proceeding with correct and good action.]
(8) We did this time after time before realizing what should have been obvious: these roads are truly different from the main ones. [This is a continuation of The ZMM Narrator’s telling us of => Good ways for productive learning AND a good method for discovery of good new ideas & good ways of doing things. ]
(9) The whole pace of life and personality of the people who live along them are different. [This is a continuation of The ZMM Narrator’s telling us of => How to see the differences between his “Secondary America” as opposed to his “Primary America”. ]
(10) They’re not going anywhere. They’re not too busy to be courteous.
(11) The hereness and nowness of things is something they know all about. [An aspect of Michael Polanyi tacit knowledge.] [Here the ZMM Narrator introduces the major topic and virtues of “The hereness and nowness of things. ”. In other words => Be sure that you are aware of the things immediately around you and thus be => Present in the here and now. ]
(12) The discovery was a real find. '' [ZMM Narrator’s is telling us of the major topic of => Noticing when and how you have connected to reality.]
(13) I’ve wondered why it took us so long to catch on. We saw it and yet we didn’t see it. [The whole problem of blindness to what is “really there”.]
(14) Or rather we were trained not to see it. Conned, perhaps, into thinking that the real action was metropolitan and all this was just boring hinterland. [The whole problem of our current culture MISDIRECTING us from what is “really there”.]
(15) It was a puzzling thing. The truth knocks on the door and you say, "Go away, I’m looking for the truth," and so it goes away. Puzzling. [The ZMM Narrator introduces the topic of => Looking for answers to solve problems, such as why doesn’t my motorcycle run, and being blind to the answer that is ~”what is good, and wants us to notice the reasons why. This topic is continued in (16) thru (20) next down.]
(16) But once we caught on, of course, nothing could keep us off these roads, weekends, evenings, vacations. We have become real secondary-road motorcycle buffs and found there are things you learn as you go. [This found there are things you learn as you go,. is a good ways for productive learning AND a good method for discovery of good new ideas & good ways of doing things. ]
(17) We have learned how to spot the good ones on a map, for example. If the line wiggles, that’s good. That means hills. If it appears to be the main route from a town to a city, that’s bad. The best ones always connect nowhere with nowhere and have an alternate that gets you there quicker. If you are going northeast from a large town you never go straight out of town for any long distance. You go out and then start jogging north, then east, then north again, and soon you are on a secondary route that only the local people use.
(18) The main skill is to keep from getting lost. Since the roads are used only by local people who know them by sight nobody complains if the junctions aren’t posted. And often they aren’t.
(19) When they are it’s usually a small sign hiding unobtrusively in the weeds and that’s all. County-road-sign makers seldom tell you twice. If you miss that sign in the weeds that’s your problem, not theirs. [Must pay attention to the terrain , or may end up at a dead end.] Moreover, you discover that the highway maps are often inaccurate about county roads. And from time to time you find your "county road" takes you onto a two-rutter and then a single rutter and then into a pasture and stops, or else it takes you into some farmer’s backyard. ''
(20) So we navigate mostly by dead reckoning, and deduction from what clues we find. I keep a compass in one pocket for overcast days when the sun doesn’t show directions and have the map mounted in a special carrier on top of the gas tank where I can keep track of miles from the last junction and know what to look for. With those tools and a lack of pressure to "get somewhere" it works out fine and we just about have America all to ourselves. [Better come prepared with prober tools.]
(21) [If we cross] “a federal highway and look at cars strung bumper to bumper to the horizon. Scowling faces inside. Kids crying in the back seat. [ZMM Narrator’s is telling us of a major problem of our times, and how people are negatively impacted, but are un aware of it, AND thus can’t find escape. This topic is continued in '(22) next down.]
(22) I keep wishing there were some way to tell them [there is a better way, but there is no way to do this.] something but they scowl and appear to be in a hurry, and there isn’t . any way to tell such persons, unless they happen to read the book => Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance '']
…..
(23) on a running cycle. Instead you spend your time being aware of things and meditating on them. On sights and sounds, on the mood of the weather and things remembered, on the machine and the countryside you’re in, [The ZMM Reader eventually learns that this is Author Robert Pirsig’s general plan for how he will present the pages of his book This topic is continued in (24) thru (34) next down.]
(24) thinking about things at great leisure and length without being hurried and without feeling you’re losing time.
(25) What I would like to do is use the time that is coming now to talk about some things that have come to mind.
(26) We’re in such a hurry most of the time we never get much chance to talk. The result is a kind of endless day-to-day shallowness, a monotony that leaves a person wondering years later where all the time went and sorry that it’s all gone.
(27) '' Now that we do have some time, and know it, I would like to use the time to talk in some depth about things that seem important.
What is in mind is a sort of Chautauqua—that’s the only name I can think of for it—like the traveling tent-show Chautauquas that used to move across America, this America, the one that we are now in, an old-time series of popular talks intended to edify and entertain, improve the mind and bring culture and enlightenment to the ears and thoughts of the hearer. ''
(28) The [1880’s] Chautauquas were pushed aside by faster-paced radio, movies and TV, and it seems to me the change was not entirely an improvement. Perhaps because of these changes the stream of national consciousness moves faster now, and is broader, but it seems to run less deep. The old channels cannot contain it and in its search for new ones there seems to be growing havoc and destruction along its banks.
(29) In this Chautauqua I would like not to cut any new channels of consciousness but simply dig deeper into old ones that have become silted in with the debris of thoughts grown stale and platitudes too often repeated. "What’s new?" is an interesting and broadening eternal question,
(30) but one ["What’s new?"] which, if pursued exclusively, results only in an endless parade of trivia and fashion, the silt of tomorrow.
(31) I would like, instead, to be concerned with the question "What is best?," a question which cuts deeply rather than broadly, a question whose answers tend to move the silt downstream.
(32) There are eras of human history in which the channels of thought have been too deeply cut and no change was possible, and nothing new ever happened, and "best" was a matter of dogma, but that is not the situation now.
(33) “Now the stream of our common consciousness seems to be obliterating its own banks, losing its central direction and purpose, flooding the lowlands, disconnecting and isolating the highlands
(34) '' and to no particular purpose other than the wasteful fulfillment of its own internal momentum. Some channel deepening seems called for.

D) A Necessary Side Note & Interlude:
.. A Good Theory Is Magic!!! AND What Is At The Rock Bottom Of This?
….. Properly viewed, a good theory, is a useful pile of word and or image-based models, some of which are converted to equations, which are at rock bottom, mere poetic metaphors!!
… In point of fact, Metaphoric Thinking (and non-verbal visualizations), were integral to the original theorist’s thinking, as he created his/her theory. And then, to gain his theory’s (original) acceptance proceeded to communicate its ideas, to other persons, again using Metaphor.
… However, some of these theories have been so totally accepted for so very long, that their metaphoric base, very evident at the time of the theory’s creation & actually required for theory idea communication, are forgotten, and the words (once metaphors) are taken as real. Hence the term, “frozen or dead metaphors”
… NOTE1: On this WebPage, there are a total of 17 discussions of Metaphor.

2) What IS IT that leads people to believe in and use (good) theories?

… All Of Professor Ross’ Book Is Highly Relevant To Henry S Gurr’s Explanation of “How Our Mind Works”, As Applied To Analogy & Metaphor:
… Altogether his results are constantly showing us how our minds are spontaneously & automatically finding optimal meaning, in the reading of words or phrases, most especially Metaphors. … And of course, Prof Ross is sensitive to text reading processes, that happen to be variously repeated which Ross calls for example => “Differentiations” “Contests”, “Resistances”, “Semantic Contagion”. Plus 6 Other Named Examples.
