In the Iliad or Odyssey the hero might say “Wolf .. Pan .. Feet Ran”. Meaning in modern terms “I saw a wolf, Pan, Forest “God” of the Shepherds, quickly arrived, and this “Actor Agent Spirit” took control of my feet, and directed my body to my house for safety.” Certainly the Ancient Person seeing and feeling their body frame respond, and secondarily their internal organs pop to action (heart, lungs, breathing, stomach sensations), would be one form of ‘felt presence of the “ Spirit Persona Beings ”: in action!

FIRST: An Introduction To Mr. Owen Barfield's Interpretation of Myth, & Mythical Beings.

In his book "Poetic Diction" , Chapter "Meaning and Myth" , when Mr. Barfield speaks of his "poetic" interpretation of Myth, he is thinking of a time, some 3500 to 7500 years ago, during the formation of the Ancient Civilizations of the Nile, Tigris, Euphrates, and Indus: River Valley Civilizations. This is of course way, prior to the Classical Greeks & Romans.
... For these earlier peoples, Mr. Barfield explains their daily manner (mode) of experiencing their world, which he calls Original Participation. The use of the word Participation, to describe this “System”, goes back to the Middle Ages.
...But Barfield adds “Original Participation” for the earliest forms and “Final Participation” for a future stage of humanity, that is anticipated by Barfield, but yet to come. ... DEFINITION From Miriam-Webster => Participation [is] the state or action of being actively involved in something. Examples: a) The subjects were thanked for their valuable participation in the study. b) It was great fun to participate in the games & food at your party.

To help you understand the “Original Participation” experience of ancient peoples, here are equivalent words that point to what is being considered => Worldview, Gestalt, Point of View, Perspective, Basic System of Understanding, Fundamental Cognitive Orientation, or Weltanschauung. ….In the above passages, Barfield's conclusions are quite different from those of other authors who have studied myth. In addition, Barfield is saying; What Dawn People saw, we moderns can not, and that is why even the "experts" have been led astray.
….To penetrate the veil, we moderns must exert "great imaginative poetic effort".

FOURTH: From The Original Participation of River Valley Civilizations, We Can Postulate A Even Earlier Participation, of "Dawn People":

If you have followed this discussion, you now must realize that in culture, new practices MUST have earlier versions, at successively older times in human pre-history. . And thus we wonder what must have been the precursors of Mythical Beings of the Ancient Civilizations of the Nile, Tigris, Euphrates, and Indus: River Valley Civilizations..

The cave paintings in France and Spain (~25,000 to 66,000 years ago", would fall in the time period of "Dawn People". Their paintings are artistically highly developed, and show beautiful images of animals, but I am not aware of archeological artifacts during these times which could be interpreted as illustrating anything we, in modern terms, could call Mythical Behavior. Thus we may assume these "Dawn People", had not developed the representations characteristic of above mentioned "Ancient River Civilizations Peoples".

He is pretty opaque otherwise. This hypothetical model is over simplified and presents assumptions/ projections which of course can never be known, with certainty.

Owen Barfield in his “Saving the Appearances” (UoL, 1960), p. 97, says =>
“The whole basis of epistemology from Aristotle to Aquinas assumed Original Participation.[as a fact]...We can either conclude that this persistent assumption was a piece of elaborate self-deception, which just happened to last...from the beginnings of human thought down to the fifteenth or sixteenth century A.D., or we can assume that there really was Original Participation. I should find the second hypothesis the less fantastic of the two, even if it were not necessary, on other and quite unhistorical grounds,...to accept Original Participation as the permanent ground of our collective representations.”

In discussing the history of ancient peoples, Jaynes points to much evidence that the earliest of ancient peoples heard the voices of the Gods and effectively were controlled by those voices. But one reservation Re Jaynes: He devotes much discussion to Right Brain vs Left Brain. which is probably mostly true from a Brain Physiology stand point. However, I don’t think his discussion Re Right-Left Brain, makes much contribution to his otherwise very important overall ideas & conclusions. For this reason, I suggest you skim over the Right Brain vs Left Brain parts of his, otherwise masterful book!!

APPENDIX IV: Why / How We In 20th & 21st Century, Inherited An “IN-Correct Understanding” The World of Ancient Myth
…Generally speaking our culture’s knowledge of Ancient Myth (documents & archeological artifacts), disappeared with collapse of the Roman Empire ~400 ad, and continued thru the Dark Ages~ 900 to ~1000 ad.
...But, starting ~2500 years ago, the gradual building of science gathered momentum, and by ~ 300 years ago our civilization gradually saw The System of Original Participation, as a stupid hopeless morass, and step by step, "pulled itself" free. “Scoured the pot clean!” as Barfield said. The cleaning was done so well that 21st Century people have practically no ability to comprehend the evidence (or the real meaning) of Original Participation, that “litters the landscape” in our words & language.
...It is only with gradual history rediscoveries in the Renaissance, ~1300 to ~ 1600 ad (plus technical development), and continuing up to the present, there has been (of necessity), an inter-cultural interpretation of the human knowledge, that Participated Civilization, some 2000 to 2400 years earlier became apparent.
...To make the story short, in the Renaissance, and ever since, the inter-cultural interpreters (readers, intellectuals, artists, historians, authors) are nearly all seriously blinded by their own head full, of their OWN Culture’s Concepts. These interpreters would inevitably “read-into” those Ancient Myths, their own understandings, which are inescapably framed by, their own culture and times. Thus, when the interpreters, subsequently write about Ancient Myth, only capable of “seeing”, in that long forgotten world of ancient peoples. Thus only the “interpretations”, become published, and not “What was really there” or a “Correct understanding”.. In other words: Whatever those in more modern times (last ~500 years), study a older civilization (2000 to 2400 years ago), they “overlay” modern mind set, INTO the world of the Ancients. Since this applies equally to writers, publishers or ordinary persons, we as modern persons (expert or not), will “read-into” an ancient document (or Ancient World View, or Myth), to a good approximation, mostly our own 20th Century Concepts. The resulting distortion, is practically speaking, un-altered by what ancient literature (or archeological artifacts) actually say or show:

Barfield & Jaynes work is far away from most main-stream scholarship or culture. This is the general recipe for authors to be ignored, it doesn’t matter how intellectually good they are. This is why (for most part), very little attention is given to either Owen Barfield or Julian Haynes. I hope these two links, next down, will help you see why / how this form of perceptual blindness could be possible. According to Owen Barfield’s Interpretation of Myth, Ancient Peoples (earlier than say ~300 years ago). experienced “The Others” (ie “The so called Gods or Goddesses ”), as effectively “Living Persons” . He says “Lived Realities, in an overall World View he calls Original Participation. Such “Living Persons”, I believe, were experienced as a mental arrival, into consciousness, of a person’s mind, plus perhaps a felt presence!! For persons back then, Mental Arrivals, such as seeing “Ghosts, Spirits, Souls, Phantoms” , were experienced, on a minute to minute basis, more like, “Friends & Neighbors: Actors & Agents, Egos & Figurations, Forces and Actions.”

We of 20th & 21st Centuries, simply do not believe in the reality of ”Ghosts, Spirits, or Other Wispy Vaporous Phantom Apparitions” ''. Nor do we experience anything similar, unless we fall into a full-absorption-joy, as we are sitting admiring the quiet beauty of a sunset.

…Various places this document, has indicated ways (plus factual evidence), that you can see to see the truth of Owen Barfield’s ideas. As mentioned, one good technique is to adopt (as a Hypothesis), The Mind Set of The Ancient System of Original Participation. Then, on a daily basis, see if the words you use, and your reading of history documents (Bible included), can start to making a whole lot more sense!!

As Barfield says, “The pot has been scoured clean!” Gone is Original Participation, and gone also are it’s “Spirit Deities” “Lived Realities”. No longer, do we pass our minutes, with Mental Arrivals (visits, communications) of “Friends & Neighbors: Actors, Agents, Forces, and Actions” .!! We STILL speak words like “Souls, Phantoms, Goblins, Trolls, Fairies” , Etc, but these are just Relic Remainders, that can only remind us, of what was ONCE a Living Word View, called Original Participation!. ....

This is most especially true for the persons who are the authors of the Literature on Ancient Myth. This leaves you, as a reader faced with a Literature of Myth, which is serious Contaminated with 20th & 21st Century Concepts & World View, and makes you Perceptually Blind to ... “What was really there!!” But as Owen Barfield says, “We can use our Imagination!”, and mentally recreate the Ancient System of Original Participation, as it really worked, according to Owen Barfield! . .

I will gladly provide this Evidence with persons who want to “Dig in and search deeper”. , I can supply, copious examples, of what I know. I will also help you understand, Owen Barfield’s Interpretation of Myth, which I have written out a) above, and b) at more length link below. . To me it is very puzzling, that I can-not, for the most part, find any literature which has discussion(s) similar to Barfield’s!! (One possible exception is English Professor Michael Sexson, of Montana State University.)
