These 12 Photos were taken by Robert Pirsig’s very own camera, as he Chris, Sylvia and John made that 1968 epic voyage upon which The Travel Narrative for Mr Pirsig’s ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘ (ZMM) book was based. Taken in 1968 along what is now known as ‘‘The ZMM Book Travel Route ‘‘ each photo scene is actually ‘‘Written-Into ‘‘ Mr. Pirsig’s book => ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘ (ZMM)

Author Robert Pirsig’s Own 12 Color Photos, Of His 1968 ZMM Travel Route Trip: Each Is Written-Into His ZMM Book. AFTER the 5 Albums Cones Up, Read & ClickOn 2nd Down.

Each of the 832 photographs in these Four Albums show a scene described in the book ‘‘Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘. Each photo was especially researched and photographed along the ZMM Route to show a specific ZMM Book Travel Description Passage: This passage is shown in quote marks below the respective photo. As you look at each of these photos, you will be viewing scenes similar to those that author Pirsig, Chris, and the Sutherlands might have seen, on that epic voyage, upon which the book ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘ was based. Thus it is, that these 832 photographs are ‘‘A Color Photo Illustrated Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘. Indeed ‘‘A Photo Show Book‘‘ for ZMM. Sights & Scenes Plus Full Explanation.

Each of these 28 photos are Full Circle Panorama Photos Seven-Feet-Wide. They were taken along the Travel Route of the book ‘‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance‘‘. They show a 360 degree view, made by stitching together eight photos. This album shows what I saw  on my RETURN trip home (San Francisco California to Aiken South Carolina), Summer 2002. These 55 photos were taken along the Route of the “1849er’s Gold Rush to California” (In Reverse Direction). After I completed my ZMM Research, I RETURNED home by way of the Route of the ‘49’s Gold Rush. This route included the route of the “California Gold Rush Trail” (in Nevada & California), as well as portions of the Oregon Trail' all the way into Missouri. These 1849er’s Travel Route Photos, were taken AFTER I took those Photos shown in the above Album named “A Color Photo Illustrated ZMM Book, With Travel Route Sights & Scenes Explained”.

Starting Monday 19 July 2004, Mark Richardson traveled the ZMM Route, on his trusty Jakie Blue motorcycle. Mark made these 59 interesting photographs of what he saw along the way. Abstract: The Human Brain, As A General Problem Solver, Is Observed To Find Automatically Spontaneously “Best Or Near Best” Solutions, That Correspond To Highest Mental Coherence:

This SACS AAPT talk, building on my previous talks, will suggest GUARANTEED special practices, anyone can adopt, to increase their own personal & professional Effectiveness: And in the process, they will self-demonstrate the truth, usefulness, and accuracy of the Hopfield’s Mathematical Model of the Mammalian Brain. Talk will feature audience feedback.
Why Is Our Brain This Way? Living creature, OF NECESSITY MUST have evolved, so they will find and use (most of the time), best actions for survival!!! Thus it is our human heritage, to (practically) instantly see automatically & spontaneously the best way and be able to do actions most efficiently. (Again, most of the time).
… Of course, clearly there are many ways in which we can NOT expect any brain to function as intended: These include brains that have been injured, or damaged, or chemically & drug altered, or genetically (or developmentally) malformed. Add to this, the effects of various diseases => High fever, virus attack, loss of blood to brain, or massive head impact. Or forms of deranged mind, including furious anger or extreme fear. Or dreaming, asleep, or insufficient sleep, not awake yet, etc, etc.

B) OUR BRAIN WORK IS ACHIEVED BY OUR MASSIVELY INTER-CONNECTED CNS NEURONS ... working together ... MINIMIZING an analog of physical energy ... thus yielding Optimal Solutions: These (most of the time) “best answers”, correspond to near highest mental coherence, for most facets organism response, albeit mental (e.g.: perception, memory, ideas, thinking, etc) or physical-muscular-actions (eg speaking, tool using, trail following, etc). Author Pirsig says a good solution automatically spontaneously WILL NEARLY ALWAYS COME TO MIND, in essence, because this of the properties of the AHA Type Problem Solving Brain you have!! … In ZMM, many excellent techniques for Problem Solving, are given with examples of various methods are given, including AHA’s, called Crystallizations. Also it is stressed by implication (but not explicitly stated) through-out ZMM, that we naturally have a Hopfield type general problem solving brain, as I have been listing in the questions above. This is one of many major points of ZMM: Of course this fits Motorcycle Maintenance, trouble shooting, hang-ups and all!! & more!!

Of course these obviously needed corrections have been there all along, but somehow they got repeatedly “over-looked”.

WRAP-UP & CLOSURE & MORE IDEAS FOR FUTURE:

A) THIS talk has focused on the practical applications of our General Problem Solving Brain, which are well explained by the Neuronal Network Model of Princeton Physicist, J. J. Hopfield.
From the ~32 examples given above, we can see that, in essence everything stored in our mind, gets used to 1) recognize arrival of a problem, and then 2) automatically & actively create answers, ie problem solutions. 3) You will recognize, that these solutions make use of our memories: In fact our brain puts to use, ALL our Memories of a whole lifetime of experience. I assert that ALL such memories are “active”: This is seen, in the abovementioned examples! (Below I sketch some of the ‘‘‘many other’‘‘ consequences of such Problem Solutions.)

You will also recognize, that the above & below examples, depend upon wide-spread connectivity through-out the brain, in accomplishing much (or all) of what our brain, does.. How all this might happen, in The Hopfield Modeled Network of Neurons, is a topic for FUTURE talks (and my book).

A NECESSARY SIDE NOTE & INTERLUDE:
A GOOD THEORY IS MAGIC!!!

My son, David Gurr, says that my ideas, are not a whole lot better than “Magic Happens Here”. Although this is meant to be a very negative critique of what I am working on, I finally realized: Yes that’s true for what I am doing. But that’s alright,’ because that is what is happening in many famous and important theories!!
Examples: 1) Newton’s Gravity Law, says the inverse square law force of gravity is silent, invisible, in-tangible action at a distance: In essence magic!! Ditto for all our modern physics forces, which are quantum mechanical exchange particle forces. …. Think about it: …. All of our elementary particles are likewise, pure empty creations of the human mind, that magically do their work!! How is it that we dare to accept these Ghosts, as real?? How is it that we dare to base our lives on these Ghosts of the Imagination?

In view of this, we are forced to ask: ‘‘‘1) What is at the rock bottom of this?’‘‘ Properly viewed, a good theory, is a useful pile of word and or image-based models, some of which are converted to equations, which are at rock bottom, mere poetic metaphors!! In point of fact, Metaphoric Thinking (and non-verbal visualizations), were integral to the original theorist’s thinking, as he created his/her theory: And then, to gain his theories (original) acceptance proceeded to communicate its ideas, to other persons, again using Metaphor. . However, some of these theories have been so totally accepted for so very long, that their metaphoric base, very evident at the time of the theory’s creation & actually required for theory idea communication, are forgotten, and the words (once metaphors) are taken as real. Hence the term, “frozen or dead metaphors” ((See more on Metaphor below.) ‘‘‘2) What IS IT that leads people to believe in and use (good) theories?’‘‘ These theories, or models by what-ever name, demonstrably organize factual proven data, into a clear & accurate mental picture: Naturally any good theory must “Fit & Explain The Facts”, both past and future. And must do so in a way, that any onlooker, will be amazed, and thus pushed toward acceptance and eventual adoption. ‘‘‘3) What IS IT that most (and perhaps all) good theories do for us?’’''' A theory to be ‘=”good” must be so organized, that our problem solving brain, can more readily use the theory as a tool in order to: a) Perceive “
our life coming at us” (problem recognition), and b) Efficiently deduce what-to-do, in response (solution). “And naturally the theory “Must Work” Now …. Having completed our response (ie successful solution), we can c) Look back and see that in observed fact, that the accomplished behavior, d) Has been overall: accurate, effective and economical. Which, e) By positive feedback, becomes, more data and support for continued use of the theory!!

In Summary: The Theory Must
A) “Fit & Explain ‘The Observed Facts’, both past and future”.
B) A theory to be “good” must be so organized, that our problem solving brain, can more readily use the theory as a tool to =>
… a) Perceive “our life coming at us” (problem recognition), and
… b) Efficiently deduce what-to-do, in response (solution).
C) And naturally the theory Must “Work”
D) And then be well remembered, so it is fully ready, the NEXT time a relevant problem hits!!

Although a whole lot more could (and has been) be said, my position (& justification) is as stated above:

A) The Following Are Of Especial Importance As Additional Abilities, Of The “Problem Solving Brain” =>

a) In order to create our normal ongoing, second by second, perception of the world around us, our brain is automatically spontaneously generating constructing creating a general mental model of the world around us. And a second by second, stored in brain memory trace is created, of both the perceptions and the resulting general mental model.
b) Then to “construct” the next new perception of the world around us, our Problem Solving Brain compares the ongoing perception of the world around us, with the perceptions in “stored-memory-trace-content”, and from this constructs the next new, second by second, general mental model of the world around us. This continues all awake moments of our life.
c) In summary => Stored “memory traces, of everything we see, is the very “thing”, that is turned around and used for decoding (second by second), our next new perception, and , general mental model of the world around us. And simultaneously our brain is is storing all these “things” away, for our future memory.to remember, and use to generating constructing creating our on-going “perceptions & thinking:
d) From this, in agreement with memory research literature, we understand that when we “have” conscious “Memories of Things Past” (to quote Michael Proust), these are being constructed, (assembled) from bits and pieces, that our mind has remembered, per a) thru d), above. These are “creative jumps” similar to “Barrier Penetrations / AHA’s!! ((And as a nice example, you will notice how I paraphrased Michael Proust, which (in actual fact) “popped to life, as I wrote the previous sentence!!))
e) This viewpoint or understanding of how our mind works, as per a) thru d) above, is. Called “Radical Constructivism”. The idea that this “Constructing” is conducted by a Hopfield Neuronal Network, I have dubbed “Radical, Radical, Constructivism”.
f) The above follows naturally from Hopfield Model: and “The Problem Solving Brain”, (( If you need more explanation, please send an email to me. ))

B) ONE THING REMINDS US OF ANOTHER, is a handy way to describe what is called an Associative Memory: This Type of Memory is an important extensions of the above, is usefully viewed as direct consequences of our **AHA** Eureka type discovery problem solving brain, and likewise depends on our brain’s massive memory and upon wide-spread connectivity through-out the brain.

1) There Are Many Arenas On Human Mental Processes Where (Because Of Our “Associative Memory”), A Small Bit Of Information, Brings Back A Whole Lot More …. In Successive Creative Leaps. …. Here Are Some Examples =>
… a) For an archeologist, a tiny fragment of a pottery shard, can bring to mind (and uniquely identify), the look & manufacture of the whole pot, plus the civilization, dates, and areas of the world where it was made.
… b) Or for the food connoisseur, the merest aroma (or food taste), can bring up the whole memory scene: The restaurant, persons there around the table, including the restaurant staff, and where located in the world, even with visualizations of street scene outside, and how to travel there!!
… c) For yourself, what are all the mental images, and things you do with WaWa? (Drink, wash, swim, boat, cruise ships, shipping freight, essential for life on earth. )
… d) For yourself, what happens when daydreaming, or even asleep dreams?
… e) Even an INTENTION to do any job or other future action: Here, as stated above, is where a small desired-end-result, can call-up an entire behavior repertoire, identify difficulties and hang-ups etc., and then call-up the steps needed for it’s completion

C) We All Use Mental Abilities Such a Metaphor, Analogy, Simile, and a Host of Similar Abilities: Besides Being Effective Method For Communication. But Had You Noticed That IN These “Abilities” => A Small Bit Of Information, Our Mind Connects To Other ~Similar Qualities. The Wikipedia Article Give An Example Of This By Saying => “Refers To One Thing By Mentioning Another”.

…. i) The Problem Of Intention, where there no good agreement how our mind can intend to do a planned future action, or how we accomplish any action!! (See more below.)
…. ii) The Problem Of Intentionality, where there no good agreement how our mind can (by definition of this term), think, visualize, do, plan, or have a mental idea “about” something, whether inside or outside of our mind. Intentionality is a philosophical concept defined by the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy as => "the power of minds to be about, to represent, or to stand for, things, properties and states of affairs". The term refers to the ability of the mind to form representations and has nothing to do with “intention”.

Below Are Four Selected Passages From Angus J. L. Menuge’s “Dennett Denied: A Critique of Dennett’s Evolutionary Account of Intentionality”. These passages show where at least one philosopher “is”, re “intention”:

(NOTE: In Professor Angus J. L. Menuge’s (above bolded) opening salvo, he asserts that:: Our ability to have & accomplish “intentions”, can NOT EVER come from NON intention materialist biology!! Although he clearly recognized that persons can both know what is best and anticipate good future intentional consequences, he has no idea that brains have the native built-in ability to formulate (and accomplish) future plans, which are in all respects “intentions”. Thus a person regularly can have “intentions”, right along with even further intentions, and in future have the ability to accomplish them.

The argument naturally leads to the postulation of some agency prior to, and arguably higher in power than, any human agent, although it does not establish that this agency has all the characteristics ascribed to God by theism. ….. “

“…..Third, traditional theism does have an explanation for the origin of human intentionality, one which shows that appeal to a higher agency need not be like appeal to Hagiographical Mother Nature. As traditional theism characterizes God, His agency requires no further explanation. … ”
