…As Discussed Below => A Satellite View => US 12, Near Top of the Mountain Pass, 11 Miles East of Miles City, MT.
….************** ….

SOME IMPORTANT LANDSCAPE & ELEVATION & VEGETATION FACTS, TO KEEP IN MIND,
…AS APPLIED TO THE ZMM NARRATOR’S TRAVEL DESCRIPTIONS IN LAST HALF of ZMM CHAPTER 7

AND WHICH WERE DISCUSSED & ILLUSTRATED IN =>
..A) PREVIOUS 4 Photos You Have Just Seen, AND
..B)The NEXT 8 Photos Forthcoming.

..1) The Powder River at US 12 (2392 Ft), is only (62 Ft.) higher than The Yellowstone River at Miles City, MT (2330 Ft), . This is because the Powder cuts down pretty much to the level of Yellowstone River, some 45 miles down-stream (NE), from Miles City.
..2) It is an observed fact in the Satellite Views (Blue Link Below), that => The increase in elevation (725 Ft,) from Powder River (2392 Ft), >> TO>> US 12 at Main Ridge Road (3117 Ft.), is quite enough higher in elevation to be enough cooler & for enough extra rain, thus creating forested meadows, which the ZMM Narrator Delightfully Reports!! These are the darker areas, as you can see in The /\ Above /\ Satellite View, and can be used to discern relative landscape elevation:
...3) FOR EXAMPLE IN IMAGE/\ ABOVE /\ =>
… You can especially see this at the “darker green area”
that is West (left) of the ”Yellow Colored “MapPinPoint” Marker followed by words => “US 12 at Main Ridge Road.”
.. ((EXPLANATION => This is the darker green forest, surrounding the (previous photo mentioned), Microwave Tower, AND likely where the ZMM Narrator reports => The Sutherlands & Chris “..walked into the meadow among the flowers under pines. ..” .
..((SIDE NOTE: In the /\ Above /\ Satellite Image, you can see a tan colored area, on North Side of US 12, about a quarter mile, West of Main Ridge Road. Remember where this is, since it explains Previous Photos that have variously mentioned => . “a uniform tan slope” … “a major US 12 road cut”… “a major uniform dry grass slope, road cut. “ ))
..4) In the Image /\ Above /\ => Especially notice when you LOOK FURTHER WEST, of this “darker green area” =>You See By Contrast => You See How Dry & Barren Are These West Facing Slopes => That Go Down To The Hoter Lower Elevation Yellowstone Valley and Miles City, MT. These West Slopes, are apparently barren from a combination of hot afternoon sun, and dry prevailing winds, mostly going East from Super Sun Baked Lower Elevation Yellowstone Valley Areas: What-ever rain falls on these West Slopes, apparently is baked dry, and not available for trees. Seeming that most rain falling, is AFTER cooling in its “going up the ridge top”.
..5) Another useful way to discern relative elevation, and a characteristic of interest in this Satellite View, are the darker green rain water run-off channels, having lines of darker green trees: Two good examples of “darker green trees”, in water run-off channels are seen at far right of this above Satellite View.
..6) The above Satellite View, is One of Five Such Segments Showing Satellite Views => With Discussion How LANDSCAPE ELEVATION IS CRUCIAL To => The ZMM Narrative, Last Half of ZMM Chapter 7. =>
… FROM Very Dry & Hot At => The Lower Elevation of The Powder River. .
. TO Cooler Forested Meadows At => The Elevation of Top Of Mountain Pass Ridge, 10 Miles East of Miles City, MT.

“ I AM A PIONEER NOW, LOOKING ONTO A PROMISED LAND.”

….Photo Note => How To Correctly Discern The ZMM Narrator’s Description =>
“ .. under pines through which I can see the far side of the valley, away and below.” =>

…This “Valley” is seen in /\ Above /\ View, BUT you must know that the “”Valley” itself, is at a much greater distance beyond any of what you see as distant tree covered dry grass brown colored slopes:
….To discern the ZMM Narrator’s => “far side of the valley, away and below.” , you should identify the lighter band of sky below the horizon’s grey clouds, and below that, then discern the line of landscape horizon, and below that, the far river valley side slopes, which are a fuzzy grey, with a tiny touch of brown.

…There is one more interesting part of this valley, despite it’s very difficult to see in this photo, :=> Looking very close (with magnifying glass, OR hold down CTRL Key & press + Key several times.), and looking, just a bit left of center, and ~1/4 inch below the landscape horizon, there is a darker ~1 inch wide somewhat darker lump. On Satellite Photos or Topo maps, this is a rather large mound approximately centered, in this valley. The river once upon a time, apparently flowed on both sides of this mid-valley mound. Miles City, MT, is to the left of this mound, and thus up-river. Down river is to the right, where the river trending NE, eventually joins with the Missouri River at the Montana – North Dakota Border.
….Also interesting In /\ Above /\ Photo => Many places above the Green “10 Mile” Sign, you can just make out “horizontal multi-colored layers of volcanic dust, & mountain rock” . ((NOTE: This Topic Was Mentioned In This Album’s 12th & 13th photos))

…(ChangesSinceRobertPirsig1968Trip),

….Upon all three of my visits to this Locate MT Rest Area, I was not able to find => The ZMM Roadside Rest Area’s outdoor “drinking fountain”. (See ZMM Passage given in Previous Photo.) Nor was I able to discern any evidence of an old drinking fountain or hand well-pump. The 3 buildings you see in The ABOVE Panorama (Aug 2019), looks fairly recent, and much more recent than my photo taken for 2002 ZMM Route Research, which in turn are more recent than the 1968 ZMM Narrator reports in on their travel there July 1968.

….The town of Locate, MT. and the Roadside Rest Area are both marked on my Rand-McNally Road Atlas, as from here ~ 2 miles West on US 12. D. J. O’Malley, Spent A lot Of His Life, as a “Horse Wrangler” In This Part of Montana! Click Here. Excerpts From Wikipedia Say =>
….Dominick John O'Malley (April 30, 1867 – March 6, 1943), also known as Dominick White and The N Bar N Kid White, was an American composer of cowboy songs and cowboy poetry, as well as a writer on Western subjects. He is best known for his song "When the Work's All Done This Fall", originally published as the poem "After the Roundup".
….O'Malley was born in New York City, the son of a Civil War soldier …. When D. J. was about two years old, his biological father [died of surgery and] … shortly thereafter. O'Malley's mother, Margaret, quickly married Charles H. White, also a soldier, giving her children his last name. The family spent several years at Army bases in Kansas, Wyoming, and Montana. In 1881, Mr. White disappeared and Margaret and her children moved to Miles City, Montana .
….D. J. soon found work as a horse wrangler for the N Bar N ranch near Miles City. From 1881-1896, he worked for the N Bar N in various jobs, including driving cattle from Texas to Montana. He was proud to have been a "rep" representing the N Bar N during roundups. The ranch was sold in 1896, and O'Malley rode for several Eastern Montana outfits including the M Diamond, the Bow and Arrow, the L U Bar, and the Quarter Circle L. He became a special deputy sheriff in Rosebud, Montana.
In addition to poems, O'Malley wrote many stories about his friends and his work in the West. This work began in the 1880s, and continued for over fifty years. Many of his early pieces were published in the Miles City Stock-Growers Journal, under the pen name N Bar N Kid White.

.
From Miles City, MT, US 12 goes mostly East some 90 miles, and after passing ZMM Book Town of Baker, MT, turns SSW and crosses into North Dakota, passing other noteworthy ZMM Route towns of Bowman, ND & Lemon, ND , And there, US 12 shifts South, and crosses the border into South Dakota. And for ~100 miles, is just a bit South of the border (=ZMM Narrator’s “Reservation land” ), until it angles down to where it crosses the Missouri River, at Mobridge, SD . ( <= Town Name is a contraction of Missouri Bridge ,)
….From there US 12 continues, mostly East with a “bit of South”, to Minneapolis, MN. As seen on maps, in South Dakota & East of the Missouri River, US 12 is most of time exactly East &.nearly straight!!
