The US 12 “Roadside Stop” Mentioned in ZMM. Two Miles East of Locate, MT.
…The ZMM Narrator says =>
… “We enter a low-rimmed canyon. Before long, a roadside stop I’ve been waiting for appears. A few benches, a little building and some tiny green trees with hoses running to their bases. John, so help me God, is at the exit on the other side, ready to pull out onto the highway. .. I ignore this and pull up by the building. Chris jumps off and we pull the machine back up on the stand. The heat rises from the engine as if it were on fire, throwing off waves that distort everything around it. Out of the corner of my eye I see the other cycle come back. When they arrive they are both glaring at me. .. Sylvia says, "We’re just—angry!" .. I shrug my shoulders and walk to the drinking fountain. .. John says, "Where’s all that stamina you were telling us about?"

..1) The /\ Above /\ Panorama opens looking at West-Going US 12, where "
John, .. is at the exit on the other side, ready to pull out onto the highway.
"
..2) .And remembering to click photo several ties to get the biggest view, & possibly use Magnifying Glass, and Using “Click&Drag” Scroll Bars, continue scroll the panorama right, you will see a bit of Westward US 12, as it disappears “over the hill”.
..3) Then continue to scroll right, you will see along the Exit Road, the grass & trees of the Rest Area, and the 3 small buildings: These are the buildings that were there Aug 2019 when the above photo taken.
….a) /\ ABOVE /\ the Center Building, did your vision system (on automatic), fixate on the Big Hill with “Horizontal Multi-Colored Layers Of Volcanic Dust, & Mountain Rock”? ((In the GSV Link below, you see this same Multi-Colored Layered Hill to Right of US 12, at Right edge of the GSV. ))
….b) AND please notice, at left edge of Center Building, a Dark Sign on Wood Poles, which is SUBJECT OF NEXT PHOTO.
..4) And continued scrolling to right, looking beyond the Rest Area Entrance Road, you see Typical Montana Scenery to the East, plus the Eastward US 12.
..5) As you further scroll this panorama, you see to a South View, where looking beyond a stretch of US 12, you see a Typical Tree Covered Montana Valley ((Called Archdale Creek)) & Distant Mountain Scenery. ((In the GSV Blue Link below, you see this Creek & Valley to Left of US 12.))
..6) And finally you see again the SAME Opening View, looking at West-Going US 12, as it disappears “over the hill”, and thus showing the Narrator’s “more smooth road ” , that he, Chris & The Sutherlands would have traveled and seen in 1968.
..SIDE NOTE1: This Is One Of Those Really Rare Places In ZMM Where "The Narrative" Deviates From "The Factual" =>
… From the First Two Sentences of the Above ZMM Passage, we might visualize => The "roadside stop" as being IN the "low-rimmed canyon", perhaps on the Eastern Edge.
….BUT it appears Author Pirsig has, for perhaps Narrative Economy & Power of Events, (AND as said In previous Photos) For Building "IMPORTANT DRAMATIC FOUNDATIONAL ELEMENT In Last Half Of ZMM Chapter 7" =>, has omitted fact that these two places are ~12 miles separated, and the nearest creditable "low-rimmed canyon", Is 12 miles away at the Powder River, shown & discussed Previous photos, which you especially may see => When viewing The There Given Link => Overview of The Powder River Canyon,".
..SIDE NOTE2: => To See The Actual Approach To => The Narrator's "Roadside Stop": REMEMBERING ..3)a) & .5) ABOVE => Click Here to see a GSV Of Highway Just Prior The Roadside Rest Area, Which Is Ahead, On Right, Just Beyond the "Highway Hump" With Trees Seen On both Side of US 12.
