Continued fm Previous Photo => “We Are In A Herreid Western Town.” …. “Everything Is More Run-Down And Mechanical-Looking …”

~7:40 am Wed 14 Aug: Henry Gurr Experiences This => Google Street View Of 1St Street & US 83, Herreid, SD.

As Robert Pirsig says in ZMM => ". At Herreid, John disappears for a drink while Sylvia and Chris and I find some shade in a park and try to rest. It isn’t restful. A change has taken place and I don’t know quite what it is. The streets of this town are broad, much broader than they need be, and there is a pallor of dust in the air. Empty lots here and there between the buildings have weeds growing in them. The sheet metal equipment sheds and water tower are like those of previous towns but more spread out. Everything is more run-down and mechanical-looking, and sort of randomly located. Gradually I see what it is. Nobody is concerned anymore about tidily conserving space. The land isn’t valuable anymore. We are in a Western town. ."

….US 83, A Major North- South Truck Route, Passes Through A Town Name Herreid, SD. , Which (As Seen ZMM Passage Above), ZMM Author Pirsig Poetically Applies As “So Very Horrible” Herreid! , because for him (and the ZMM Narrator) this town, the heat, the crummy "run-down mechanical" western town feeling, and even the road pavement itself, compounded with all the big heavy semi trucks on this road were => Altogether => Just Herreid ! (In Other Words Everything Here Is So Very “Horrible”! )
…….AS IS POETICALLY & METAPHORICALLY APPLIED HERE AT HERREID, SD,

… Author Robert Pirsig throughout ZMM, regularly, uses town names “poetically”, to (with poetic metaphor) relate or express some characteristic of the town, Together With Metaphorically, the TOWN's NAME, and in turn use this Metaphoric Content to AMPLIFY the ZMM Travel Narrative, most often relation to His Chautauqua Lecture. It’s fun to see him do these “Metaphoric Bridge Connections”!!
….Many of these “Metaphoric Bridge Connections” (MBC) BETWEEN Pirsig’s Travel Narrative and His Chautauqua, are pointed out & discussed in Henry Gurr’s 2002 ZMM Route Photos, All Four Parts. For An DISCUSSION Of METAPHORIC BRIDGE CONNECTIONS, With EXAMPLES ((Along With “Why Is ZMM So Factual?)) Click Here & AFTER Page Comes Up, Scroll Down To ….Metaphorical …. .

The ABOVE, Whole ZMM Book Scene Is Poetically So “Herreid “!! BUT EVER MORE-SO Because John in Real Life Was A Horrible Alcoholic, AND Narrator, Chris, & Sylvia have to WAIT in the HEAT, not knowing WHEN John will come back!!. :-((
END Narrator’s “So Herreid” For This Part Of SOUTH Dakota.

~8:03 am Wed 14 Aug: Just After CROSSING the Border, We Are in NORTH Dakota:

As Robert Pirsig says in ZMM =>
The tired feeling wears off completely and the wind and sun feel good now, making it real. It’s happening, just from the warming of the sun, the road and green prairie farmland and buffeting wind coming together. And soon it is nothing but beautiful warmth and wind and speed and sun down the empty road.

….A Panorama View of Corn Field, & Glacial Pothole Lake, By A Major Truck Route Intersection, And In Distance An Off-The-Road Truck Stop Rest Area, 4 Miles West of Hague, ND.
..1) The /\ Above /\ Panorama opens looking North along the road ahead. Contrary to the Narrator’s complaints, you can see the Pavement Of US 83 is quite good! At The Bottom Of The Hill, look close:
…..a) You can just make out the Junction of Rt 11, at which Henry Gurr Turned Right, And Following The ZMM Route (in reverse), went Directly East ~4 Miles To ZMM Route Town of Hague, ND. And
…..b) You can just make out the pavement that leads left =>To the Truck Rest Area & Lake Front (( In grass to right of pavement, The Gray Colored Sign has no words, likely a flipped down “ice on bridge sign.))
..2) And Using “Click&Drag” Scroll Bars, to scroll the panorama right, in View /\ Above /\, you will see in distance,
…..c) Two Clumps of Of Dark Green Trees: These mark two more Rainwater Filled “PotHoles” that Rt 11 Curves Around in process of reaching Hague, ND,
…..d) AND below the Sum Glow, an additional tiny very distant trees, which marks about where the Town of Hague, ND is...4) More scrolling this Panorama, you can see the South US 83 Highway Pavement is also very good, contrary to ZMM Narrator’s complaint, in ZMM Passage (additionally discussed in Next Photo.)
..5) Next you see a Very Healthy Corn Field, and then And to right of the Corn, => The Large Glacial Pothole named “Rice Lake”.
..7) And finally you see again the SAME Opening View, showing US 83 Highway ahead.
..8) And now (REMEMBERING (in /\ Above /\ Panorama) to click photo several ties to get the biggest view, & possibly use Magnifying Glass.), look close BETWEEN pavement US 83 and the Right Edge of the lake, where upon =>

People Drive From All Over For The German Specials At This Charming North Dakota Café!
A Wonderful Testimonial Article => Posted in WebSite Named > North Dakota, February 16, 2019 by Leah [[Below are EXCERPTS from => A Writer Who Enjoys Writing These Reviews!. ]] Click Here.
….In the absolutely lovely town of Hague, North Dakota, there is a cafe that’s recently received a fresh upgrade but kept to its old roots. People still drive from all over to visit this tiny city with a population of just 71 residents for the food at this cafe. The German special they have are especially popular and you’ll want to head over there to try it for yourself.
….In the itty bitty town of Hague, North Dakota, life is quiet among the small population of fewer than 75 residents.
….The town is known for its gorgeous church that stands tall among the little cluster of other buildings. That's not all people come here to see, however.
….The Hague Cafe recently moved and reopened under new management in late 2018, has gained a reputation for having absolutely terrific food — especially when they're having a German special
…The humble cafe is simple yet inviting both inside and out, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere is exactly what you'd hope for in a small town cafe. The delicious smell of home cooked-type foods will fill your nose when you walk in.
…Although the Hague Cafe has an entire menu of tasty items, from sandwiches to steaks and everything in between, it's their authentic German food that gets people talking.
…If you come on the right day you'll be treated to things like fleischkuekle, sausage, and of course North Dakota's favorite type of soup, knoephla.
….Different specials can include everything from mixed knoephla, sauerkraut, and sausage to a warm bowl of knoephla soup and a side of cheese buttons.
….Of course, the Hague Cafe has a wide variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals that range from classic American diner dishes to seafood and all of it is scrumptious.
….Make sure to stop by when they have their German specials to enjoy all those timeless meals that North Dakotans love because the Hague Cafe knows how to do them right!
….The Hague Cafe is located at 220 Main Ave. W, Hague, ND 58542. To see their hours and check for their current special you can visit their Facebook page.
….North Dakota loves German food — that’s certainly no secret — and many of the state’s most iconic dishes are German. After having a hearty meal at the Hague Cafe, why not indulge in a classic German dessert: kuchen!.

This continues East for very long stretches, Which is true => All the way East, until Rt 11 reaches the ZMM Book Town of Oakes, ND! And from Oakes, ND Rt 11 CONTINUES EAST MUCH THE SAME, to the North Dakota Eastern Border with Minnesota.

Date-Line: October 17, 2020. By Henry Gurr. (ChangesSinceHSGTrip’02)

….The Really Old Hague Café’, which must have been ~forever in a really old Red Brick Building at 220 Main St, is (as of this May 2020 writing), possibly still there, but un-used. A Google Search for … Hague Café’ Hague, ND, yields no info if the building survives, but finds Various Internet Pages, that say the Restaurant Itself ((like the Owl Café’ in Laurel, MT)), continually evolves, with new owners & new staff: And in case of the Hague Café’ => Sometime within last several years, moved into a New Building, shown in View /\ Above /\, and listed as at same street address: But is unclear whether the new building, has left the other old Café’ building still there?

….“I was especially intrigued by Pirsig's use of climate and geography as controlling metaphors for the intellectual topography ., by how conveniently changes in weather and landscape serve to telegraph or accompany changes in the drift and direction of the nameless narrator's own thinking. The topological analogy between landscape and vision .. in the texture of this novel … I thought, brought into question some of our century ’s-…-and our culture's--most cherished assumptions … about the primacy and autonomy of human consciousness. In Pirsig's text, the structure and motion of narrative consciousness seemed (and still seems) to me to depend as much on the physical landscape through which it moves, as on the currents of the intellectually mainstream ideas it retraces."

EXPLANATION => There Is Only One Place in ZMM, Where Robert Pirsig Uses Word “Windmill” => " A second flash—WHAM and everything brilliant . . . and then in the brilliance of the next flash that farmhouse . . . that windmill . . . oh, my God, he’s been here! . . . throttle off . . . this is his road . . . a fence and trees . . . and the speed drops to seventy, then sixty, then fifty-five and I hold it there.."

So Henry took photo of every Windmill he saw, as discussed below.
….************** ….

~10:10 am Wed 14 Aug, Henry Gurr's Travel through Here: 96th Street NW (same as Rt 11), Forbes, ND.
….This /\ Above /\ Google Street View (Date 2013), looking Southwest, shows very well, the general scenery that Henry Gurr experienced, when he drove ZMM Route East, passing through here, and really a continuation of the previous Panorama’s Photo’s => “The Endless Prairie-Land of South Eastern, North Dakota”. ,

(ChangesSinceHSGTrip’02.)
…. When Henry Gurr Was At This Same Location Back In 2002, He Was Motivated To Take 8 Photos To Form A Panorama View Of =>An Abandoned Prairie Homestead & Windmill But As of The /\ Above /\ GSV, These Are No Longer Here.

….As Henry traveled The Route of Book ZMM (albeit in reverse direction), his goal was to find any major CHANGES, that had happened SINCE his original Summer 2002 ZMM Research Trip:

EXPLANATION => WHY MAKE SO MANY PANORAMAS THAT => You See In This & Other ZMMQ Gallery Albums? =>

….Henry Gurr’s Continuing Motivation (And Photo Location Choice), Comes Directly From This Passage From ZMM > Concerning “The Endless Prairie-Land of South Eastern, North Dakota” …Especially Please Note Last Narrator’s => The LAST 2 SENTENCES =>
"Later, when we stop, Sylvia has tears in her eyes from the wind, and she stretches out her arms and says, "It’s so beautiful. It’s so empty." .... John gets his camera out. .. After a while he says, "This is the hardest stuff in the world to photograph. You need a three-hundred-and-sixty degree lens, or something. You see it, and then you look down in the ground glass and it’s just nothing. As soon as you put a border on it, it’s gone." .. I say,."

Wind Generated Electrical Power in North Dakota, From Wikipedia.
….North Dakota is a leading U.S. state in wind power generation. Data from 2017 indicates that the state generates 26.8% of its electricity from wind, enough to power over one million homes.
….In the end of 2017, 2996 megawatts (MW) of generation capacity had been installed for wind power in North Dakota.[1] Additional capacity had been limited by transmission line constraints until the completion of a transmission line from Fargo to central Minnesota in 2015.[2] Additional wind farms have been planned for the state once again,[3] which led to a capacity of 3628 MW by 2019.
….Very favorable wind conditions in the state enable wind farms to achieve capacity factors in excess of 40 percent. The Thunder Spirit wind farm, completed in 2015, is expected to have a capacity factor greater than 45 percent.[
