..1) The /\ Above /\ Panorama opens looking along an East-Ward Gravel County Road. Professor Ken Smith is deciding where to take his next photo:
..2) And Using “Click&Drag” Scroll Bars, to scroll the panorama right, you will see The ZMM Narrator’s => “… the sun, the road and green prairie farmland and buffeting wind coming together.”
..3) And scrolling to right (And Remembering to click photo several ties to get the biggest view, & possibly use Magnifying Glass) => Start counting Windmills. EVERY TINY “STICK-UP”, IS A WINDMILL !!
..4) Continuing To Scroll Right, Direct South is direction of the small clump of trees at the Horizon.
..5). More scrolling to right, a Field of Wheat ready for harvest, then you are looking along the West-Going Gravel County Road.
..6) Continuing scrolling, is a wide Field of Hay, then looking North, and swing around to the mowed Grass at the edge of the road, made into Hay Bails.

And as you see /\ ABOVE /\, FlatWorld’s first Stitchings did not adjust the Panorama Opening to be Henry Gurr’s First Photo Supplied, as desired. Also Photoshop in its normal Stitching Mode, always ends its Stitched Panoramas at exactly 360 degrees, and thus did NOT include the 7th Photo Henry Gurr Supplied. This in turn meant that the Resulting Panorama did NOT go ~40 degrees beyond 360 degrees as desirable. …After treating Prof Ken Smith & Family to Dinner, at the NEW RESTAURANT-INCARNATION of The Former Nodak Hotel Restaurant, Which is run by same Gal and now called >> The Fireside Steakhouse, Henry Gurr followed Prof Ken Smith to his home.
….Hearing Henry Gurr discuss his “Theory of How Our Mind Works” Ideas (Click Here.) , & relation to Philosopher Mathematician Charles Sanders Peirce, Prof Smith shows Henry his Library.
….Prof Smth's Library, is in double-garage sized building behind his house, entirely devoted to books => ALL walls, filled with shelves upon shelves of books, wall to wall and floor to ceiling!!
…Prof Smith has placed the Library Of Congress Numbering System on every book, so in several minutes he found 3 books he wanted to show Henry, that related to Henry’s abovementioned Theory Interests.

…. For example, Prof Smith Gives to Henry =>
..A) The excellent biography (really a history book). “The Metaphysical Club” , which tells much about the Mathematician Charles Peirce Family History, which Henry needed to know.
..B) Also wonderful gift of a Photo Poetry Book “Visibility Ten Miles” , to which Prof Smith contributed all the incredibly good photos!!
..C) Also Given was a “Photo Movie” DVD About the wonders Ellendale, ND = “Home Town America” , that Prof Smith had helped create.

It’s Been A Wonder-Filled Day … Pure Serendipity!!
…BUT by time Prof Smith is saying Goodbye, daylight was rapidly fading, and Henry Gurr had NO ideas for Camping. Prof Smith suggested City Park in Oakes, ND, the next ZMM Route Town 40 miles East on Rt 11.
….However, Henry could not find any City Park. Nor were there any Signs saying camping allowed, nor other likely places, such as Truck Stop.

…The Photo /\ Above/\, shows “The Three Pines Motel”,
….Which Is The NEW Name For The Former E & I Motel.
The E & I Motes has been Mentioned In Various Writings About ZMM Route, Especially Those Of Henry Gurr, and Swedish Journalist Seven Lindquist.

… And after several local people said they didn’t know of any, Henry decided he would go to the same motel he stayed on his 2002 ZMM Route Research Trip: The $ for overnight, although normal, but was … shock … much higher than camping :….
…. Inspiration Strikes …. Henry asks the very helpful manager … “ Can I pay you to setup my small tent on a patch of your grass?”
….Reply “We don’t have any way to do that, but here is the phone number of Paul Roney.”, who is current owner of the trailer park across the street.”

….~9:00 pm Wed 14 Aug: Looking South To Paul Roney’s Hay Field, From The Three Pines Motel, Oakes, ND.
….After several calls (using motel borrowed cell), Henry Gurr is talking, to Paul Roney: He is on a farm tractor, mowing his hay field, which is South at the end of the street. (Seen in Google Street View /\ Above /\, (This is just before the trees seen in the distance.) He says “drive on back, and he will meet me on his next circuit of mowing”.

….Henry Drives Along A Series Of Mobile Homes, To A Grassy Area, And Sees A Tractor’s Moving Lights, Because It’s Getting Dark. .
… Thanks to The Marvels of Cell Phones => A man, surely Paul Roney, shuts off the tractor, and comes over. He understands my camping request: "Sure! Set up your tent on the lawn under the big oak tree. If anybody complains, tell e’m to call me. And what brings to this area?”
,,,,Stroke Of Good Luck …because when Paul learns about Henry’s : “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" Research, he says “I’ve got a Storage Container full of Harleys, and with my buddy go on long trips to Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, etc. Love it!! We camp along the roadside, but have a pistol in case there’s trouble.
…Since Paul seems interested ( MORE Stroke Of Good Luck ),
…. Henry gets out a ZMM copy and reads passages Re Oaks, ND.
…Then AN OTHER STROKE OF GOOD LUCK !!
… Paul instantly recognized the ZMM Narrator’s “turn right at a row of cottonwoods” , says he OWNS, the remaining part of that Old Motel where Pirsig & Company stayed!! OH WOW!! WHAT A (THIRD) STROKE OF GOOD LUCK!

Now We Know, For Sure, Where That Old ZMM Motel Was,
….And It’s Still There! Henry Is SO Delighted He Gives Paul A Copy Of “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” ,
and asks Paul to send an Email, when he gets part way into the book.

…So: There You Have It! By A Long Series Of Steps, EACH Of Which Was Its OWN Stroke Of Good Luck, =>
….Henry found a Harley Enthusiast, who allowed Henry camp in big grassy area, by his hay field, in back of his Mobil Home Park. He also had quite vital ZMM Research Information. In return he received a copy of the ZMM Book.

…As Henry gets ready to turn off the lights in the Prius, he sticks a paper note in steering wheel of so next morning => “Be SURE to take => ”ZMM Motel Panorama”!!

…. Next morning, Henry’s note was quirt effective, as you will see in => Next Photo => A PANORAMA VIEW Of => The Still Existing Units Of The Former ZMM Motel, Just West of the RR Tracks, Oaks, ND.
.... SIDE NOTE => In fact a SECOND Panorama Photo Set exists, of much higher resolution, which you may ask for.

…“John says there is a motel at the other end of town, but I tell him there’s a better one if you turn right, at a row of cottonwoods a few blocks down.
…We turn at the cottonwoods and travel a few blocks, and a small motel appears. Inside the office John looks around and says, "This is a good place. When were you here before?" … "I don’t remember," I say. …. "Then how did you know about this?"…. "Intuition." He looks at Sylvia and shakes his head.
….Sylvia has been watching me silently for some time. She notices my hands are unsteady as I sign in. "You look awfully pale," she says. "Did that lightning shake you up? … ."No. …. "You look like you’d seen a ghost."
….John and Chris look at me and I turn away from them to the door. It is still raining hard, but we make a run for it to the rooms. The gear on the cycles is protected and we wait until the storm passes over before removing it.
… After the rain stops, the sky lightens a little. But from the motel courtyard, I see past the cottonwoods that a second darkness, that of night, is about to come on. We walk into town, have supper, and by the time we get back, the fatigue of the day is really on me. We rest, almost motionless, in the metal armchairs of the motel courtyard, slowly working down a pint of whiskey that John brought with some mix from the motel cooler. It goes down slowly and agreeably. A cool night wind rattles the leaves of the cottonwoods along the road.”

All This Exactly “Fits” the opening of ZMM Chapter 3: Concerning the “Red River” AND “Breckenridge”, Here Is what the ZMM Narrator says. =>
By the time we are out of the Red River Valley the storm clouds are everywhere and almost upon us. ….. John and I have discussed the situation [back] in Breckenridge and decided to keep going until we have to stop. …. That shouldn’t be long now. The sun is gone, the wind is blowing cold, and a wall of differing shades of grey looms around us. …. It seems huge, overpowering. The prairie here is huge but above it the hugeness of this ominous grey mass ready to descend is frightening. We are traveling at its mercy now. When and where it will come is nothing we can control. All we can do is watch it move in closer and closer.

Here Is What The ZMM Narrator Says About The Western Planes Prairie Landscape, As They Approach The Minnesota Border, To North Dakota. =>
…“ [ We are ] not in the Dakotas yet, but the broad fields show we are getting nearer. Some of them are blue with flax blossoms moving in long waves like the surface of the ocean. The sweep of the hills is greater than before and they now dominate everything else, except the sky, which seems wider. Farmhouses in the distance are so small we can hardly see them. The land is beginning to open up.
….There is no one place or sharp line where the Central Plains end and the Great Plains begin. It’s a gradual change like this that catches you unawares, as if you were sailing out from a choppy coastal harbor, noticed that the waves had taken on a deep swell, and turned back to see that you were out of sight of land. There are fewer trees here and suddenly I am aware they are no longer native. They have been brought here and planted around houses and between fields in rows to break up the wind. But where they haven’t been planted there is no underbrush, no second-growth saplings—only grass, sometimes with wildflowers and weeds, but mostly grass. This is grassland now. We are on the prairie.
…. Memories of car trips across them are always of flatness and great emptiness as far as you can see, extreme monotony and boredom as you drive for hour after hour, getting nowhere, wondering how long this is going to last without a turn in the road, without a change in the land going on and on to the horizon.

… The road winds on and on . . . we stop for rests and lunch, exchange small talk, and settle down to the long ride. The beginning fatigue of afternoon balances the excitement of the first day and we move steadily, not fast, not slow.
We have picked up a southwest side wind, and the cycle cants into the gusts, seemingly by itself, to counter their effect. Lately there’s been a sense of something peculiar about this road, apprehension about something, as if we were being watched or followed. …“ We’re out of the marshes now, but the air is still so humid you can look straight up directly at the yellow circle of the sun as if there were smoke or smog in the sky. But we’re in the green countryside now. The farmhouses are clean and white and fresh. And there’s no smoke or smog.

..AND the /\ Above /\ Photo Is Kept Here, So You may “See The Difference”.
….Which as you can see in the /\ Above /\, the Photographic Quality is remarkably good, but The Less Than Perfect Stitching Of FlatWorld.com, using Adobe Photoshop, stitched nicely shows 6 of the 6 supplied photos. And as you see /\ ABOVE /\,. FlatWorld’s first Stitchings did not adjust the Panorama Opening to be Henry Gurr,s First Photo Supplied, as desired. By happenstance here, only 6 Successive Photos were taken by Henry Gurr (The 7th Photo of just trees, was not taken).. This in turn meant that the Resulting Panorama did NOT go ~40 degrees beyond 360 degrees as desirable. The Previous Panorama Photos Stitched & Edit Improved by FlatWorld.com are Far Better in nearly all these respects, because after a LOT of phone instructions, they finally understood & Realized what Henry Gurr was requesting.

….The /\ Above /\ View Is ZMM Route (Rt 55), some 85 miles WNW of Minneapolis, MN.

Concerning Their Minnesota Road Just Traveled, AND This Roadside Rest Area, Here Is What The ZMM Narrator Says Mid Chapter 1. =>
... Up ahead the other riders, John Sutherland and his wife, Sylvia, have pulled into a roadside picnic area. It’s time to stretch. As I pull my machine beside them Sylvia is taking her helmet off and shaking her hair loose, while John puts his BMW up on the stand. Nothing is said. We have been on so many trips together we know from a glance how one another feels. Right now we are just quiet and looking around.
The picnic benches are abandoned at this hour of the morning. We have the whole place to ourselves. John goes across the grass to a cast-iron pump and starts pumping water to drink. Chris wanders down through some trees beyond a grassy knoll to a small stream. I am just staring around.
After a while Sylvia sits down on the wooden picnic bench and straightens out her legs, lifting one at a time slowly without looking up. Long silences mean gloom for her, and I comment on it. She looks up and then looks down again.
"It was all those people in the cars coming the other way," she says. "The first one looked so sad. And then the next one looked exactly the same way, and then the next one and the next one, they were all the same."
"They were just commuting to work."
She perceives well but there was nothing unnatural about it. "Well, you know, work," I repeat. "Monday morning. Half asleep. Who goes to work Monday morning with a grin?"
"It’s just that they looked so lost," she says. "Like they were all dead. Like a funeral procession." Then she puts both feet down and leaves them there. “

... Unless you’re fond of hollering you don’t make great conversations on a running cycle. Instead you spend your time being aware of things and meditating on them. On sights and sounds, on the mood of the weather and things remembered, on the machine and the countryside you’re in, thinking about things at great leisure and length without being hurried and without feeling you’re losing time.

8:42 am Fri 16 Aug: One mile SE of Town of Maple Lake, MN.

….The /\ Above /\ View Is ZMM Route (Rt 55), some 45 miles WNW of Minneapolis, MN. (Although it is possible that Our ZMM Riders stopped here, there is no evidence for this.)

Concerning This Area of Minnesota, Here Is What The ZMM Narrator Says In The Third Paragraph of Chapter 1: => … ... I’m happy to be riding back into this country. It is a kind of nowhere, famous for nothing at all and has an appeal because of just that. Tensions disappear along old roads like this. We bump along the beat-up concrete between the cattails and stretches of meadow and then more cattails and marsh grass. Here and there is a stretch of open water and if you look closely you can see wild ducks at the edge of the cattails. And turtles. . . . There’s a red-winged blackbird. I whack Chris’s knee and point to it. "What!" he hollers. "Blackbird!" He says something I don’t hear.” What?" I holler back. He grabs the back of my helmet and hollers up, "I’ve seen lots of those, Dad!" "Oh!" I holler back. Then I nod. At age eleven you don’t get very impressed with red-winged blackbirds. You have to get older for that. For me this is all mixed with memories that he doesn’t have. …. ************** … .

9:10 am Fri 16 Aug: Half Way Between Rockford, MN & Loretto, MN.

….The /\ Above /\ View Is ZMM Route (Rt 55), some 26 miles WNW of Minneapolis, MN.

Concerning This Area of Minnesota, Here Is What The ZMM Narrator Says In Mid Second Paragraph of Chapter 1: =>
..., This highway is an old concrete two-laner that hasn’t had much traffic since a four-laner went in parallel to it several years ago. When we pass a marsh the air suddenly becomes cooler. Then, when we are past, it suddenly warms up again. I’m happy to be riding back into this country. It is a kind of nowhere, famous for nothing at all and has an appeal because of just that. Tensions disappear along old roads like this.

….SIDE NOTE: Contrary to what the ZMM Narrator says about bad highways various places in ZMM (including the above passage), Henry Gurr 2002, 2006, & 2019 experienced the entire ZMM Route, is good smooth Asphalt Pavement. AND contrary to above passage, Rt 55 coming out of Minneapolis is Four Lanes Divided (for ~ 24 miles), until Rt 55 gets out of City Type Environment, after Leighton, MN. …. ************** … .
