…“Then he climbs on the cycle and we are off. ” (End Chapter 31.)
ZMM Narrator’s “High Point”, Point Cabrillo Dr, about 1.2 travel mile Southwest of Caspar, CA. In the /\ Above /\ Photo, in the far distance, you see that the road turns to the right. This must be the OLD Rt-1 California Coast Highway, which goes South to the town center of Mendocino, CA.
…Since it is an old “by-way” and probably the road Author Robert Pirsig and Chris took in 1968, the Pirsig Pilgrim should follow it!

Some Afterthoughts About Author Robert Pirsig’s Use Of Metaphoric Bridge Connections, AND
Master Motifs, Since They Fit The Definition.
…Of Course, The Arrival Of “The Wind” And “” The Seagull, Are Good Omens, Bringing Hope.
…But, In Addition,Are These Metaphorical Telegraphs Of Important Upcoming Events?
…[ “ A faint misty wind blows in the grass around him. A seagull alights nearby.” ]
ZMM Narrator’s “High Point”, Point Cabrillo Dr, about 1.2 travel mile Southwest of Caspar, CA..
As Has Been Stated In Earlier Gallery Photos =>
…There are no useless wasted words in Author Robert Pirsig’s book. Thus, the ZMM Reader should come to attention when seeing the Narrator’s seeming useless words in the passage above.
…These, of course, are added by Pirsig to add “realism” and may have actually happened.
…But, beyond this, we need to wonder the Meaning(s), Symbolism(s), and Metaphoric Bridge Connection(s), of these, to other Narrator passages.
…This applies to practically every word in this passage! And we can be sure they are important!
…For example => Are these seeming unimportant words, really an early Metaphorical Telegraph of important upcoming events, that soon will play out in upcoming ZMM passages, concerning Author Robert Pirsig’s “Climax Scene” ?
Moreover, Since Both “ Wind In The Grass, ” And “A Seagull Alights Nearby,” =>
…A) Come Through As Metaphoric Bridge Connections, AND
…B) As variations of themes “bird” or “wind”, these themes are repeated MANY times throughout ZMM book: Thus these above passages ALSO are Master Motifs, since they fit the definition..
Learn More About => Master Motifs AND Metaphoric Bridge Connections.
… As has been stated in earlier in many Gallery Photos => In his book “ Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance”, Robert Pirsig makes extensive use of 1) Analogy, 2) Metaphor And 3) Metaphoric Bridge Connections.
...And in the above passage, we see two more examples => “ Wind Blows & A Seagull Alights.”
…We as ZMM Readers, by paying attention to many such examples, will gradually begin to learn how Author Robert Pirsig intends for us to “see” their meaning and use.
Click Here For More Information About Metaphoric Bridge Connections AND Master Motif “Wind” and “Listening To The Wind”.
…Also after this page comes up, you will learn that => The idea of “Master Motif” is discussed in => "The Guidebook To "Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance".

A BETWEEN CHAPTER INTERLUDE: CLOSURE ON AUTHOR ROBERT PIRSIG’S “CLIMAX SCENE”:
…Date-Line: April 8, 2023 By Henry Gurr: The below material was previously supplementary discussion that was on previous photos. But realizing this introduced too much interruption of The ZMM Climax, this material is moved to the below =>
*************************
FROM THE THIRTEENTH PREVIOUS PHOTO:
Concerning Author Robert Pirsig’s “Climax Scene”.
…“Through the fog I hear the whine of gears of a truck and am terrified by it. .. "You have to get up, Chris." .. The wail is high-pitched and inhuman, like a siren in the distance. .. "You must get up!" .. He continues to rock and wail on the ground. .. I don’t know what to do now. I have no idea what to do. It’s all over. I want to run for the cliff, but fight that. I have to get him on the bus, and then the cliff will be all right.” (Cont Next)
*************************
NOTE:
…… And in the passage above, the Narrator says “I want to run for the cliff,”
…For the Narrator (Also the real RP?), things have gotten so rotten bad, such a total impasse producing unbearable pain & agony, he can only think of immediately ending it all, jumping over “the cliff”, vertical drop onto the sharp rocks & ocean. Like any good novel … this increases the tension and worry in the reader … who gets to worrying that such disaster will actually happen!!
The “Whine Of Gears” From The Truck, If It Really Happened, Must Have Been Most Particularly Loud! And Persistent!! AND In Fog, Totally Unseen!!!
…This Adds High Emotional Terror, To An Already Bad Situation Between Chris & The Narrator, And Getting Worse By The Second!!
…It’s Total Impasse, And Of Course The Narrator Would “Want To Run For The Cliff, And Immediately End It All.
…But It’s ONLY The Narrators Remembering His Responsibility => “I Have To Get Him On The Bus” … That Temporarily Stops The Narrator. .
…NOW: If this were a large, heavily loaded truck climbing the long, steep hill identified in /\ Above /\ Photo, the driver would have the truck in low gear, with the engine ‘just a roaring” at high RPM, as the truck labored up to the hill top “High Point.”.
…Of course, the Narrator would be.“terrified by it.” because it would be unseen, and would be looming at any moment from the fog immediately beside them! AND “terrified by it.” because he & Chris might get run over by the truck, before even seeing it!
…All this is a high order, dramatic narrative which Author Robert Pirsig develops for us. And some version of this may have actually happened.
…But more to the point => Mr. Pirsig’s presentation comes across as so real, we as readers are absolutely certain, that total disaster will happen at any moment.
…Now, Having Thus Set The Stage, Then Suddenly & Forcefully Appears Phaedrus !!
…..
FROM THE TENTH PREVIOUS PHOTO:
.Above It Is Stated That Author Robert Pirsig’s Map X, Is Locates At The Side Of The Pavement Shown In /\ Above /\ Photo [TENTH PREVIOUS]. This Would Be A Bit Right Of The Approximate Center Of That Photo, And In Weeds & Rough Grass Just Beyond The Left Metal Reflector Post.
…In the /\ Above /\ Photo, [TENTH PREVIOUS] Mr Pirsig's Map X, would be (in foreground) close to the left metal reflector post, beyond the weeds at curved road.
…Back in 1968, the ZMM Narrator was looking for a restful place to pull off,” this probably would be only a narrow strip of medium height rough, weeds & grass along the highway. This is because => Dense Coastal Bushes (as you have seen in previous and the next photo) would have kept the Narrator and Chris on the rough grass at highway pavement edge.
And Later We Are Told “The Truck Arrives, Stops, And The Driver Looks Out To See If We Need A Ride. ”
….This statement, along with other descriptions of this "climax scene" such as Chris is on grass, again leads us to believe that => The Narrator and Chris were at the immediate pavement edge at the beginning this curve.
…Of course the actual 1968 location for Chris & Author Robert Pirsig could have happened further from what is shown in /\ Above /\ Photo, and larger distances from it pavement.
…..
FROM THE EIGHTH PREVIOUS PHOTO:
… The truck driver stops because he sees Chris crumpled up on the grass, as is stated in above passage. Obviously, something was wrong, hence the trucker’s offer to help.
…Assuming a real person => I wonder who the trucker was? Does anyone have information? Please contact me with your suggestions and ideas. For example, was there any big construction going on in this area in late July 1968?
*************************
The Truck, The “Whine Of Gears”, Loud! And Persistent!! AND In Fog, Totally Unseen!!! The Narrator Would “Want To Run For The Cliff, And Immediately End It All.
…All This Adds High Emotional Terror, To An Already Bad Situation Between Chris & The Narrator, It’s Total Impasse, And Getting Worse By The Second!!
… And Of Course these Like any good novel … this increases the tension and worry in the reader … who gets to worrying that such disaster will actually happen!!

As Has Been Stated In Earlier Gallery Photos =>
…There are no useless wasted words in Author Robert Pirsig’s book. Thus, the ZMM Reader should come to attention when seeing the Narrator’s seeming useless words in the passage above such as =>. “ …The whine of the truck is upon us. …
The truck arrives, stops, and the driver looks out to see if we need a ride. …
puts the truck in gear, and it whines off through the mist ”
…These, of course, are added by Pirsig to add “realism” and may have actually happened.
…But, beyond this, we need to wonder the Meaning(s), Symbolism(s), and Metaphoric Bridge Connection(s), of these, to other Narrator passages. This applies to practically every word in this passage! And we can be sure they are important!
…For example => Are these seeming unimportant words, really an early Metaphorical Telegraph of important upcoming events, that soon will play out in upcoming ZMM passages, concerning The Narrator’s new relationship with Chriss ?
…Here we should especially note that the Truck Drivers offer of help is “waved off”, and The Narrator says with a seeming permanent finality => “ … and there is only Chris and me. ”
…Do these Metaphorically relate, telling us that no one can help. They are alone in their inability to resolve their conflict.
…..
FROM THE EIGHTH PREVIOUS PHOTO:
Professor Forest B. Shearon, In His ZMM Book Review, Analyzes The Following ZMM Passage =>
…“ Chris cries softly now. Cries and cries and cries. The wind from the ocean blows through the tall stems of grass all around us and the fog begins to lift.
…"Don’t cry, Chris. Crying is just for children."
…After a long time I give him a rag to wipe his face with. We gather up our stuff and pack it on the motorcycle. Now the fog suddenly lifts and I see the sun on his face makes his expression open in a way I’ve never seen it before. He puts on his helmet, tightens the strap, then looks up.
…"Were you really insane?"
…Why should he ask that?
……No! [Phaedrus last words.]
…Astonishment hits. But Chris’s eyes sparkle.
…"I knew it," he says.
…Then he climbs on the cycle and we are off. ”
End Chapter 31
Concerning The Above Passage Professor Forest B. Shearon, In His ZMM Book Review Writes =>
…"When Chris is assured that Phaedrus had wanted to see him [in the hospital], “ the fog suddenly lifts and I see the sun on his face makes his expression open in a way I’ve never seen it before.” ”
…”The sun, once almost belonging exclusively to the emotionally blind narrator, is now also a part of Chris's world. It now shines on an integrated father, a healing son, and a caring relationship."
NOTE1: This quotation is from Book Review “Visual imagery And Internal Awareness in Robert Pirsig’s ''Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance,” by Forest B. Shearon. This Book Review may be found in DiSanto and Steele's " Guidebook to ZMM" page 329.
NOTE2: ZMM Enthusiasts should Be Aware That The "Guidebook To ZMM" Has =>
…A) A nearly complete full text of material that was in the “Original Manuscript” of ZMM book, that was not used in final published 1975 version. Starting on page 205.
…B) Has full text of “Robert M. Pirsig’s Letter To Robert Redford” concerning what Mr. Pirsig expected for a movie version of ZMM Book, starting on page 229.
…C) A really extensive 90 page “Critical Reception Of Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance, ”. This is a compilation of a total of 10 complete full text Book Reviews, which were originally published in “The Literature” back when this Guidebook came out in 1990. Starting on page 240.
…D) A really extensive, really complete, & fully annotated 10 page “Bibliography Of Works About Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance, starting on page 338.
…E) Beyond the above this 407 page "Guidebook To ZMM" Has A Whole Lot More For The ZMM Enthusiasts. Who Should Own Their Own Copy. Click Here.
(NOTE3: Henry Gurr has a CD copy (from Robert Pirsig) of probably a nearly complete listing of Book Reviews and other ZMM related publications, which were originally composed by Mr. Pirsig. As if you want to know more.)
…..
FROM THE SECOND PREVIOUS PHOTO:
……“ We gather up our stuff and pack it on the motorcycle. Now the fog suddenly lifts and I see the sun on his face makes his expression open in a way I’ve never seen it before. ”
…(Part of larger ZMM passage shown above.)
NOTE:
… Earlier the ZMM Narrator said => “ break in the fog … but soon … obscured.”
…We as readers should (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) be thinking about & looking for meanings of “brief opening” symbolized by the fog.
…And for Chris & the Narrator, hope new possibilities may open up, but aware that right away these possibilities might “close up”
… Now, by contrast, in the passage above, the Narrator says “ the fog suddenly lifts and I see the sun on his face”
…And this surely Metaphoric Bridge Connects to how for Chris the “fog has lifted” and his troublesome worries are replaced with “sunny insight”.

SOME IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTICE AND REMEMBER CONCERNING HOW THE ZMM NARRATOR & PHAEDRUS ARE DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT.
The ZMM Narrator, Is Always Being Realistic & Pragmatic & True To The Real Situation As He Sees It: Even Knowing => “ I’m Not Giving Him Strength. I Never Have Been. I’m Killing Him. ”
…Consider This =>
…“ I say, "Chris, I think it’s time to talk about some things you don’t know about."
He listens a little. He senses something is coming.
"Chris, you’re looking at a father who was insane for a long time, and is close to it again."
And not just close anymore. It’s here. The bottom of the ocean.
"I’m sending you home not because I’m angry with you but because I’m afraid of what can happen if I continue to take responsibility for you."
His face doesn’t show any change of expression. He doesn’t understand yet what I’m saying.
"So this is going to be good-bye, Chris, and I’m not sure we’ll see each other anymore." ” …
And, If We Contrast The Above ZMM Narrator’s Treatment Of Chris, With That Of Phaedrus, We See A Direct OPPOSITE =>
Phaedrus, Knows What Chris Needs, And Is Clearly Supportive To Chris. But At Some Points, What Phaedrus Says Can Not Be True Nor Accurate to The Real Situation.
… Phaedrus has been long suppressed BY THE NARRATOR !! AND In the awful, drismal, discouraging, cold, dense fog … with this crisis and Chris's extreme distress …plus the Narrator's total defeat and “want to run for the cliff, … and thus immediately & permanently escape & end it all, …. Finally, Suddenly, Phaedrus Speaks Directly To Chris!
…“Everything is all right now, Chris.
…That’s not my voice.
…l haven’t forgotten you. .. Chris’s rocking stops.
…How could I forget you?
…Chris raises his head and looks at me. A film he has always looked through at me disappears for a moment and then returns.
…We’ll be together now.
…The whine of the truck is upon us.
…Now get up! ”
“…The whine of the truck is upon us.
…Now get up!
… ”Chris slowly sits up and stares at me. The truck arrives, stops, and the driver looks out to see if we need a ride. I shake my head no and wave him on. He nods, puts the truck in gear, and it whines off through the mist again and there is only Chris and me. ”
NOTE:
…Here we should especially note that the Truck Drivers offer of help is “waved off”, and The Narrator, not realizing that Phaedrus is going to constructively help Chris, says with a seeming PERMANENT FINALITY =>
…“… and there is only Chris and me. ”
……..Do these Metaphorically relate, telling us that, for the Narrator, no one can help. They are alone in their inability to resolve their conflict.
ZMM Narrator’s “High Point”, Point Cabrillo Dr, about one travel mile Southwest of Caspar, CA.
Concerning ZMM “Climax Scene” Passage "Don’t cry, Chris. Crying is just for children." Which In ZMM Is In Italics But Not Bold.
…David Buchanan, Sept 16, 2020, Writes =>
I very rarely check my email these days but happened to see your exchange today (Sept 16).
I'm not sure what the question is, exactly, but can offer my two cents in a general way. It seems that many readers were troubled by the way Chris was treated but I suspect Pirsig was an old-school German dad and that's just not how middle class Americans treat their kids. RMP's own father was probably even colder.
As I read it, Chris was miserable because he knew on some level that his real father was missing and had been replaced by an imposter who central concern was looking sane and staying out of the psyche hospital. Instead of speaking the truth at all costs, as Phaedrus would do. The Narrator was a cliche spewing, people pleasing, phony. He tried to bury Phaedrus once and for all and Chris knew it. Maybe he was the only one who knew it. That's what was killing him.
By integrating Phaedrus into his personality he saved his son and himself. Chris could have his real father back and merger of Phaedrus and the Narrator meant he could have his mystical truth and still live in this world. And if Phadedrus' truth is heard, it redeems the world, thus the analogy to Christ. For Pirsig, in real life, he was an Orpheus figure rather than a Christ figure but mythologically speaking, they both preform, that world redeeming function, through death and resurrection. It's a classic story, to say the least.
Maybe the line about crying is the narrator speaking, as if the integration was still unstable and Phaedrus hadn't been fully integrated at that moment. It does sound like something the Narrator would say, whereas Phaedrus would insist that people are allowed to have and to express their feelings.
When Quality becomes central, the affective domain of consciousness is added to a strictly rational mind and thereby improvs our thinking. Quality is the front edge or starting point of the overall cognitive process and so we couldn't really put our feelings aside even we wanted to.
For whatever it's worth,
David B
……..
Two hours later in a reply email Lee Glover wrote => That was worth a lot David. Wonderful analysis. It aligns with what I have concluded but much better stated.

The Road Twists and Turns Through the Trees With Surprises Around Each Corner.
…The Crisis Between Narrator And Chris Now Triumphantly Resolved, The Mood Is Totally Joyous, As The Cycle Responds To Each Curve And They Experience The Beauty Of All The Flowers!
…(Start Chapter 32.) “As we ride now through coastal manzanita and waxen- leafed shrubs, Chris’s expression comes to mind. “I knew it," he said.
…The cycle swings into each curve effortlessly, banking so that our weight is always down through the machine no matter what its angle is with the ground. The way is full of flowers and surprise views, tight turns one after another so that the whole world rolls and pirouettes and rises and falls away.” (Cont Next)
Three miles East of Mendocino, CA. After the Mendocino Business District, we have turned to the East off of California Coastal Highway Rt-1 … onto the Comptche-Ukiah Road. Although not specified by the Narrator, there are several reasons why this road is very likely the one Author Robert Pirsig took back in 1968 =>. 1) Going South from Caspar, CA it is the first available road inland where sun and heat (no cold fog) would be available. 2) It appeared on my Rand-McNally Map as a major through road, and hence likely would be on the Narrator’s Map of the area. 3) It goes SE, a direction they would want to go. 4) This road connects to the only other available high speed thru road, US-101, that directly connects to Narrator’s San Francisco. 5) It connects directly and nicely to Ukiah, the next Narrator mentioned town, as well as five subsequent Narrator mentioned towns. 6) The Comptche-Ukiah Road has the Orr Springs Resort, which has several off the road shaded resting places, and back in 1968 might have had picnic tables visible from the road. 7) And fitting the ZMM Narrative, these possible picnic table locations are in a ravine off to one side of the stream valley. 8) The Orr Springs Resort, appropriate to the travel time of the narrative, is some 36 miles from Point Cabrillo Rd, Caspar, CA.
…Although other possible routes would have similar scenery, this route does well fit the Narrator’s scenery and landscape descriptions.

The ZMM Narrator Keeps Thinking Back To What Happened At “A High Point, ”Where Was The Sharp Switch Back Of Point Cabrillo Road.
…“"I knew it," he said. It comes back now as one of those little facts tugging at the end of a line, saying it’s not as small as I think it is. It’s been in his mind for a long time. Years. All the problems he’s given become more understandable.
…"I knew it," he said. .. He must have heard something long ago, and in his childish misunderstanding gotten it all mixed up. That’s what Phædrus always said — I always said — years ago, and Chris must have believed it, and kept it hidden inside ever since.” (Cont Next)
ZMM Narrator’s “High Point”, Point Cabrillo Dr, about 1.2 travel mile Southwest of Caspar, CA. Here the Narrator repeats his Master Motifs => "One of those little facts tugging at the end of a line, saying it’s not as small as I think it is.".
…He could have added that of “All the problems,” Chris’s "big problem" may not be as big as it seemed.
…This is because Chris’s long & very troubling “…"Were you really insane? ” had a quick & simple direct answer from Phaedrus’s last word => "No!”
…This, totally removed Chris’s "big problem" so in his childish certainty said "I knew it.“
…However, as is the case with a lot of problems, the “what’s wrong”, is UN-known. And a lot of “lateral drift” and bumbling around must be stumbled through, in order to discover … sometimes only by accident … bumble onto the “what needs to be fixed”! This is what happened to the Narrator & Chris’s “problem”.
…After Author Robert Pirsig’s ZMM “Climax Scene”, the Narrator and Phaedrus are to be one person again! But in passage above => the Narrator has to correct his thinking => “That’s what Phædrus always said — I always said — …”
… In the NEXT Photo => We discover that the Salvation of the Father, has all along been Chris's belief & support, and not the other way around!! *************************

As They Travel Through Much Warmer Country, The Narrator Marvels At The Marvelous BreakThrough Just Experienced, Back At The ZMM Narrator’s “High Point”.
…The Narrators Exuberant Feelings Are (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) Reflected In The Marvelous “Rich Air And Strange Perfumes From The Flowers.”
…“We’re related to each other in ways we never fully understand, maybe hardly understand at all. He was always the real reason for coming out of the hospital. To have let him grow up alone would have been really wrong. In the dream too he was the one who was always trying to open the door.
...I haven’t been carrying him at all. He’s been carrying me!
... "I knew it," he said. It keeps tugging on the line, saying my big problem may not be as big as I think it is, because the answer is right in front of me. For God’s sake relieve him of his burden! Be one person again!
.. Rich air and strange perfumes from the flowers of the trees and shrubs enshroud us.” (Cont Next)
On the Comptche-Ukiah Road, three miles East of Mendocino, CA. After the Mendocino Business District, we have turned to the East off of the California Coastal Road Rt-1 … onto the Comptche-Ukiah Road.
In A Sep 8, 2020 Email Lee Glover Wrote =>
…In the ''Guidebook To Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance”, the authors said Phaedrus was the Christ, a reference to the statement in the last chapter of ZMM, that “Chris was carrying him ”.
…Chris literally means bearer of the Christ. To my knowledge Pirsig never disputed that assertion.
NOTE:
…From The ZMM Narrative, Chris and the Narrator were in Casper, CA around lunch time, and after the events at the Narrator’s “High Point” would be traveling the approximately 8 miles to here on Comptche-Ukiah Road in the early afternoon. However, you can tell from my photos, I was not able to maintain this schedule, and that I traveled this road at dusk.
…Hence my photos for the next 104 miles through to Santa Ana, CA will not have the correct sun illumination, nor direction to fit the ZMM Narrative.

Mile After Mile, As The Road Curves And Turns Through the Dense Luxuriant Forest.
…“[Rich air and strange perfumes from the flowers of the trees and shrubs enshroud us.] Inland now the chill is gone and the heat is upon us again. It soaks through my jacket and clothes and dries out the dampness inside. The gloves which have been dark-wet have started to turn light again. It seems like I’ve been bone-chilled by that ocean damp for so long I’ve forgotten what heat is like. ” (Cont Next)
Six miles East of Mendocino, CA. The ZMM Narrator mentions “the trees and shrubs enshroud us. ” This complete “enshrouding” of dense green forests, is seen in my photos of this area, which is relatively near the Pacific Coast, and gets moist fog & coastal rains. But, as you will see in the forthcoming photos, this gradually changes to => “We See the Heavy Forests Are In Some Places, Opening Up To Open Lands and Thick Dry Grass.”
…However, after traveling some 36 miles inland, from the coast we see => “The Road Twists and Twirls Over More Grass Dry Grass Covered Hills” with only a few widely spaced trees.
…This change from “dense green forests near the Pacific coast” to “mostly dry grass” further inland, is typical for most of California
NOTE:
…As mentioned in a previous photo => The Narrator and Chris came through here in early afternoon. But I was not able to maintain this schedule, and by the time I arrived to this area, it was at sunset with ever darker dusk.
…Please excuse my photos for not having the sun illumination of the ZMM narrative. Also I did not notice, until after I got home, that all my Comptche-Ukiah Road photos start the “twisty” “S” turn first to the right. Sorry for this “miss-truth”. Of course, there are an equal number of “S” shaped turns that turn to the left first! **************************

These Are the Best Low Hanging Tree Branches I Could Find On The Comptche-Ukiah Road. Perhaps the Road Has Been Improved Since 1968.

Is This The Place Along the Road Were the Narrator and Chris Could Have Rested?
…“ I begin to feel drowsy and in a small ravine ahead I see a turnoff and a picnic table. When we get to it I cut the engine and stop. ” (Cont Next)
The /\ Above /\ Photo Is Along The Comptche-Ukiah Road, At Melbourne, CA.
..A) ~11.0 Road Miles East of Mendocino, CA and.
..B) ~33.3 Road Miles West of Ukiah, CA.
. As I Traveled This Backcountry Road Towards The ZMM Route Town Of Ukiah, Ca => About Midway I (Henry Gurr), Started To Look For Chris & Narrator’s Possible Resting Places And/Or Picnic Tables.
…The place pictured /\ Above /\ was a quiet, well off the pavement, and a good place for me to rest in the shade. But it was not a ravine, or a park, nor did it have any picnic tables.
….Using TopoZone Map (Link In Forthcoming Photo) => The only apparent place along the road where there is “a small ravine” visible from the road and just possibly might have had a 1968 “picnic table” , was/is "Orr Hot Springs", by road ahead. Orr Springs, is approximately 36 road miles from the Point Cabrillo Dr Sharp Switch Back, an appropriate distance to fit the ZMM narrative. These details will be shown in Forthcoming Photos.

Is This The Place Along the Road Were The Narrator And Chris Could Have Rested?

More Discussion, Concerning => What I Observed In 2002, As I Traveled The Comptche-Ukiah Road.
….Although the /\ Above /\ Photo shows plenty of daylight, my continued driving East, was in increasing darkness: However, despite the darkness, I was actively watching for the ZMM Narrator’s => “in a small ravine ahead I see a turnoff and a picnic table .. ”
… But, for a combination of reasons, I completely missed it. This may have been because the picnic table(s) were removed since 1968, or moved farther from the road, or hidden by new bushes & tree growth. Since I did not know that these table(s) were part of a Cabin & Camping Resort called “Orr Hot Springs Resort”, I didn’t know to look for any Highway Sign concerning such a location..
…. Added to this, I was not sure this was the correct road, and thus I was not primed to look very closely, or stop and ask about picnic tables, etc. Consequently, I have no Orr Hot Springs photos, nor most especially of any “picnic table“.
.To Persons Who Know This Comptche Ukiah Road & Area, Back In The 1970’s: Please send Email => Tell us what you know about possible locations of ZMM Narrator’s Descriptions of this Road & Area, and possibly send some photos..

…We Leave Melbourne, CA (WayPt = 468w ~0435ft), And The Road Does A “Twisty Climb” (~+400 Ft) To A Ridge Top (WayPt = 469w 1226 Ft Elevation), Where The /\ Above /\ Photo Came Into View!
Google Map Gives Address as Ukiah, CA.
..A) ~32.1 Road Miles East of Mendocino, CA and.
..B) ~12.2 Road Miles West of Ukiah, CA.
…. This TopoZone Map Clearly Shows The Hillside Climb To The Hill Top Location Of /\ Above Photo => RIGHT CLICK AND SELECT “NEW TAB”
…And AFTER the Map View Comes Up, You Will See a Clutter of Adverts That Are Impossible To Eliminate. => YOU BEST SHOULD =>
….Use Scroll Bar At Far Right => Adjust Green Topo Map Until You See JUST BELOW The Plus&Minus Upper Left. => A ClickOn For “Full Screen”. Click on it, and Adverts Will Be GONE.
….Then use Plus&Minus To Zoom. You can “Click&Drag” Map In Any Direction, to See More Off Your Screen Edges.
Keeping The Setting For “Full Screen”, Please Know That => My WayPt = 469w 1226ft, Is In The Exact Screen Center, At GPS Coordinates => Degree Latitude = 39.22862 & Degree Longitude = -123.49605.
…Now, because TopoZone Maps do not have any way to mark screen center, you should at just below center, look for the darker contour line at 1460 ft elevation, that goes all around a hilltop: And just a bit above “the hilltop”, is my WayPt = 469w 1226ft: Of course this WayPt is by the “Comptche Ukiah Road”, which on this map is marked by two closely spaced lines, so it looks darker & wider than other lines.
…If you follow this road line down (South), and then zig-zag to left (West), and then approx. 45 deg moving to upper right (Northwest), you see the road has come up the hill side, which is above (North) of Johnson Creek. This fits the “Twisty Climb” description given in bold above.
…Now, going back to center screen, and If you follow this road line trending generally to the right (East), you see the road does a lot of zig-zags, as it goes gradually down the hill side, to an elevation of 600ft, and soon thereafter drops into the valley of the East Fork Big River (EFBR), which is the topic of the THIRD & FOURTH next photos.
… Continued following both road and EFBR, these will go by Orr Springs, the topic of the FIFTH & SIXTH next photos.
DATE-LINE: April 11, 2023. by Henry Gurr.
…If you read the above TopoZone paragraphs AND see these features on the TopoZone Map, you will realize how useful these topo maps are.
…In my experience in using TopoZone Maps, it is far easier and faster to see elevations and changes in elevation than say Satellite Views. And even better than Google Earth Pro (installed on your computer version), because even in their “3D Display”, is often too much obstructed by trees, to see elevation changes well enough to adequately identify hill tops, streams or rivers.
…My additional experience in using TopoZone Maps =>I was editing captions the series of ZMMQ Gallery you have been looking at, and discovered the text did not say well enough the location of above WayPt = 469w. I extensively tried Google Satellite Views and Google Earth Pro, but neither gave what I needed.
…Finally, after hours of frustration, I used a TopoZone Map showing area of Comptche, CA and followed the “two closely spaced lines” to the SE until I found => “The road that came up the hill side, which is North (above) of Johnson Creek”,. which was followed by the “zig-zag” road: And when I saw “the darker contour line at 1460 ft elevation, that goes all around the hilltop”, I knew I had successfully found my lost WayPt!! This is because the road shown on TopoZone, fit the above Bold and fit my 2002 memory of the road leading up to where I took the /\ Above /\ Photo.
…Thus in summary, and as a matter of fact, it was a TopoZone Map, that enabled me to find the map location of the above mentioned WayPt = 469w 1226ft.
…AND also, as a matter of fact, it was extensive studying a TopoZone Map, that enabled me to find the map location of the ZMM Narrator’s => “ in a small ravine ahead I see a turnoff and a picnic table .. ” Earlier study using Google Satellite Views and Google Earth Pro failed.

NOTE: WHAT ZMM READERS SHOULD KNOW CONCERNING THE LANSCAPE SURROUDING ZMM NARRATOR’S [ “I begin to feel drowsy and in a small ravine ahead I see a turnoff and a picnic table. When we get to it I cut the engine and stop. ” ]
…After I traveled East on the Backcountry “Comptche Ukiah Road” Road, the name of this road changes to “Orr Springs Road and soon thereafter at some 8 miles East of Comptche, CA, I came into the valley of the so-called “East Fork Of The Big (Redwood Trees) River” (EFBR), where the /\ Above /\ Photo came into view, after traveling ~2 miles in this valley. …
Information From Looking At The TopoZone Map (Discussion & Link THIRD PREVIOUS Photo).
…After the /\ Above /\ Photo Location, it looks as though the road travels the EFBR Valley, East up stream to eventually go by the “Orr Hot Springs Resort”. This is where I believe Author Robert Pirsig and Chris, back in 1968, found “ a small ravine … and a picnic table.”

Concerning The “Big (Redwood Trees) River” Wikipedia Excerpt Says =>
…The Big River is a 41.7-mile-long (67.1 km) river in Mendocino County, California, that flows from the northern California Coast Mountain Range to the Pacific Ocean at Mendocino, Mendocino County, California. From the mouth, brackish waters extend 8 miles (13 km) upstream, forming the longest undeveloped estuary in the state.”
