The Narrator Tells Us What Hides Behind These Brick Walls.
…Of Course, He Is Contrasting What Is Lost In Comparison To the Wild, Wide Open Montana Mountain Places of This Country He Knows So Well!
…“[It is the little, pathetic attempts at Quality that kill.] The plaster false fireplace in the apartment, shaped and waiting to contain a flame that can never exist. Or the hedge in front of the apartment building with a few square feet of grass behind it. A few square feet of grass, after Montana. If they just left out the hedge and grass it would be all right. Now it serves only to draw attention to what has been lost.” (University of Chicago. Cont. Next.)
Where HSG could find parking on S. Ellis Ave, North of University of Chicago, Chicago, IL. From the Narrator's Chicago apartment building’s experience, he surely knew very well what the tiny strips of grass looked like, and what was inside many of these apartments.
…I experienced the very things described in the ZMM passage above, including the very tiny patches of grass, when I was a student in the old, congested, inner-city apartment areas of Cleveland, OH (1955 – 1968).

Phaedrus Can Only See Twisted Souls Here.
…“Along the streets that lead away from the apartment he can never see anything through the concrete and brick and neon but he knows that buried within it are grotesque, twisted souls forever trying the manners that will convince themselves they possess Quality, learning strange poses of style and glamour vended by dream magazines and other mass media, and paid for by the vendors of substance. … and the truth creeps in, the only truth that exists here, crying to heaven, God, there is nothing here but dead neon and cement and brick.” (University of Chicago. Symbolic Impenetrable Coastal Fog Hangs Over the California Coast.
…The Impenetrable Unknown Lies Beyond.
…[All is lost! For Phaedrus => “time consciousness begins to go. Sometimes his thoughts race on and on at a speed seeming to approach that of light. But when he tries to make decisions relating to his surroundings, it seems to take whole minutes for a single thought to emerge. A single thought begins to grow in his mind, extracted from something he read in the dialogue Phædrus.
…"And what is written well and what is written badly—need we ask Lysias or any other poet or orator who ever wrote or will write either a political or other work, in meter or out of meter, poet or prose writer, to teach us this?"
…What is good, Phædrus, and what is not good—need we ask anyone to tell us these things?
…It is what he was saying months before in the classroom in Montana, a message Plato and every dialectician since him had missed, since they all sought to define the Good in its intellectual relation to things. But what he sees now is how far he has come from that. He is doing the same bad things himself. His original goal was to keep Quality undefined, but in the process of battling against the dialecticians he has made statements, and each statement has been a brick in a wall of definition he himself has been building around Quality. Any attempt to develop an organized reason around an undefined quality defeats its own purpose. The organization of the reason itself defeats the quality. Everything he has been doing has been a fool’s mission to begin with. His mind either uncontrollably races or stagnates. Sleep dwindles to zero. Decisions become impossible. On a street corner he blanks out. “.
…[We learn, in two pages how Phaedrus reaches his end. The Narrator finishes this section with:]
…“ A fragment comes and lingers from an old Christian hymn, "You’ve got to cross that lonesome valley." It carries him forward. "You’ve got to cross it by yourself." It seems a Western hymn that belongs out in Montana.
…"No one else can cross it for you," it says. It seems to suggest something beyond. "You’ve got to cross it by yourself."
. .He crosses a lonesome valley, out of the mythos, and emerges as if from a dream, seeing that his whole consciousness, the mythos, has been a dream and no one’s dream but his own, a dream he must now sustain of his own efforts. Then even "he" disappears and only the dream of himself remains with himself in it.” Cont. Next.)
Old Costal Road 3 miles South of Klamath, CA. Note well: Whether we realize it or not, these last two sentences describing Phaedrus’s plight, are what is true for all of us … exactly!
…This “dream” is all we have! And, push come to shove, we each must sustain it by our own efforts. We have no other choice.

While Riding In the Dark of Night and In the Cold Rain, the Narrator Tells Us How Phaedrus Comes To His End.
…“And the Quality, the areté he has fought so hard for, has sacrificed for, has never betrayed, but in all that time has never once understood, now makes itself clear to him and his soul is at rest.“
Weott, CA. Is this Insanity? Any person who subjects their body to overwhelming stress equal that of Phaedrus may expect disastrous results! We are simply not built to handle this degree of emotional stress.
…The Narrator describes Phaedrus's over work, lack of sleep, zero attention to health, food, etc. But there are additional factors that hasten “stall out” and "break down". Consider a person who is additionally subjected to conditions where: 1) progress to resolve compounding problems is hopeless, or 2) escape from life threatening circumstances is completely and utterly blocked. Then add 3) Circumstances where these conditions go on for a long time, and despite heroic efforts from all angles, there is no escape.
…We have seen similar results in what happens to a person in the conditions called “Extreme Battle Fatigue”. There may be peculiar behavior, but at some point the person’s body protective mechanisms, will shut down ALL body & mental activity! … Complete stall out will occur … irrespective of what the person may want or try to do otherwise!
…Most especially when there has been insufficient time to “repair” after a first incidence.
…I believe this what had happened in Chicago, and what is threatening to happen to the Narrator (and Chris to a lesser degree), (Metaphoric Bridge Connection), as they travel this California coast.
…To a limited degree, I speak from personal experience.

“ Murderous. Anything Can Happen—A Sudden Rut, An Oil Slick, A Dead Animal.—But If You Go Too Slow They’ll Kill You From Behind.
…But … Why Doesn’t the Narrator Get Off the Road?
…[The exhausted Narrator has finished his story of what happened to Phaedrus in Chicago. The bleak Chicago situation exactly mirrors (Metaphoric Bridge Connection), his very dangerous, in the total dark, cold rain, bone chilled and grim Coastal California travel with Chris.
…For absolutely no reason, they still nevertheless, press ever onward into the cold rain and black of night:]
“The cars are thinned out to almost none, and the road is so black it seems as though the headlight can barely fight its way through the rain to reach it. Murderous. Anything can happen—a sudden rut, an oil slick, a dead animal.—But if you go too slow they’ll kill you from behind.
…I don’t know why we still go on in this. We should have stopped long ago. I don’t know what I’m doing anymore. I was looking for some sign of a motel, I guess, but not thinking about it and missing them. If we keep on like this they’ll all close.” Cont. Next.)

…Best Fit the Narrator’s Sequence of Passages.
…And Matching The ZMM Narrative Above, You See, At Respectively Left & Right => A “ Sodium Light + A Sign Announces "Stop".”
…Of Course, Major Contrary To What You See Above, The ZMM Narrator & Chris Experienced Roads Like This In Rain & Total Dark!
…“ We take the next exit from the freeway, hoping it will lead somewhere, and soon are on bumpy blacktop with ruts and loose gravel. I go slowly. Streetlamps overhead throw swinging arcs of through the sheets of rain. We pass from light into shadow into light into shadow again without a single sign of welcome anywhere. A sign announces "STOP" to our left, but does not tell which way to turn. One way looks as dark as the other. We could go endlessly through these streets and not find anything, and now not even find the freeway again. .. "Where are we?" Chris shouts. .. "I don’t know." My mind has become tired and slow. I can’t seem to think of the right answer—or what to do next.
..Now I see ahead a white glow and bright sign of a filling station far down the street” ” Cont. Next.)
Stop sign, Business District, Fortuna, CA. After considerable search I conclude the following => Of all the towns in this area of California, this stop sign, this road, and the road from the Freeway into this town, Including dual rows of Sodium Lights, best fit the Narrators’ overall descriptions.
…For this /\ Above /\ Photo and several later photos, it was full sunny daylight when I was doing my ZMM Route Research. And of course, this is what my photos show. I’m sorry not to be able to always show photos appropriate for the Narrator’s passages describing driving at dark and in the rain.
NOTE:
At Fortuna, CA the ZMM Narrator departs from his normal practice of giving the town name of the filling station or the motel. As we have seen before, he often does this when the scenes reported seem to be particularly disagreeable to him. My statement above about “no motels” seems extreme and therefore possibly in error. Can someone please help here?

DATE-LINE March 22, 2023 by Henry Gurr: Concerning The Difficulty Of Finding Any Motels At The Fortuna, CA Exit From US-101 Freeway.
…Both the ZMM Narrator in 1968 and I in 2002, had great difficulty finding any motels near this freeway exit. I remember seeing somewhere that this was due to a disastrous flood in the Fortuna, CA area.
…So just now I did a Google Search for disastrous flood in the Fortuna, CA. And found that Click Here To See Satellite View => How Fortuna, CA. Is IN The Flood Plane Of The Eel River.
…From the above Satellite View, you can see that Fortuna, CA is right beside the Eel River, exactly IN the flood plane, with practically no elevation above it. … AND, of course this could have destroyed most of the motels, and reasonable that none were rebuilt 4 years later when Author Robert Pirsig came through in 1968. …This makes lots of sense as you read the 1964 Flood Article below. This 1964 Flood Article is among many such reports Google Search found. =>
The ‘Thousand Year Flood’ of 1964.
…By Clay Mcglaughlin. Published: December 18, 2014, & update September 7, 2018.|
On Christmas Eve morning ,1964, the rampaging Eel River had ripped apart the Paul Mudgett Bridge at Rio Dell. At lower left is the Eel River Sawmills log deck. ……
…This December marks the 50th anniversary of the “Thousand Year Flood” in Northern California, which officially began on Dec. 21, 1964 — reaching its peak on Dec. 23 of that year and continued until early January 1965. Striking nine years almost to the day after a 1955 flood that was called “the disaster of the century,” the ’64 flood was caused by a deadly combination of weather events that dumped massive amounts of snow in the mountains, followed by warm rains that melted the snow and inundated local watersheds in a matter of hours.
…“Prior to the main storm period, Dec. 19 through 25, minor rain events of November into early December had saturated the ground and increased the flow in the local rivers. In mid-December, a strong high pressure system was located between Hawaii and Alaska.
… Around Dec. 19, the high pressure system weakened, allowing follow-on weather systems to move across the Pacific Ocean at successively lower latitudes before turning to the northeast and moving towards the west coast. A storm track 500 miles wide extending from near Hawaii to Oregon and northern California was established,” wrote Reginald Kennedy, service hydrologist at the Eureka station of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/National Weather Service.
…“The combination of this very moist warm air, strong west-southwest winds, and orographic lift of the mountain ranges oriented at nearly right angles to the flow of the air resulted in heavy rain from Dec. 21 to 23. Today we use the term ‘Atmospheric River’ to describe this type of weather phenomenon.
…According to Kennedy’s research, during peak precipitation Whiskeytown Reservoir and Richardson Grove State Park reported more than 11 inches of rain in 24 hours. A total of 15 inches was reported at Ettersburg, 22 inches at Standish-Hickey State Park, and 17 inches at Gasquet.
…The flood cut a huge swath of destruction across the North Coast, killing 29, causing millions in damage and cutting off entire communities from the outside world for months. Click Here To Read Whole Article With Photo Of Flooded Eel River And Destroyed Bridge.
The ‘Hundred Year Flood’ of 1964.
… Click Here To Read Whole Wikipedia Article With 3 Photos Of Flooded Lands And Bridge. Also a “Map of California showing the 34 counties declared disaster areas during the flood. The six red counties sustained more damage than the other 28 counties combined.”
NOTE:
…AFTER the above-mentioned Satellite View comes up, you can also see (at bottom right of center), the comparative location of the small town of Redcrest, CA, which is some 25 miles further South. As you will see, this is the most likely location of Chris and the ZMM Narrator’s Motel.

This Is The One Older Hotel I Was Able To Find Reasonably Close To Fortuna, CA.
…Clearly It VERY Nicely Fits ALL The ZMM Narrators Various Clues, Most Especially “Remnant …. Of The Thirties”
…However, It Is Just As Clearly, In Its Present Form, Is A Much Nicer Place.
“…. [In the rain and the dark streets,] even with directions, we almost miss it. They have turned the light out, and when I register nothing is said. .. The room is a remnant of the bleakness of the thirties, sordid, homemade by a person who didn’t know carpentry, but it’s dry and has a heater and beds and that’s all we want. I turn on the heater and we sit before it and soon the chills and shivers and damp start to leave our bones.“ ” Cont. Next.)
Redcrest, CA. Note how the bleak condition of the motel, and even it’s shoddy construction, (Metaphoric Bridge Connection), reflect and amplify both the Narrator and Chris’s bleak physical travel circumstance and even more bleak memories of Chicago
Note also how the ZMM Narrator’s => Poor quality carpentry of this Redcrest, CA motel contrasts with the very high craftsmanship of the Hillcrest Motel, in Gardner, MT, discussed in an earlier photo caption.

…And Although Its Location Somewhat Fits The Narrator’s ZMM Passages, This Is About 25 Miles South Of Where The Narrator Says The Gas Station Was Located Back In Fortuna, CA.
…But, This 25 Miles Does Fit The Narrators Description Of How Hard It Was to Find It.
…[After a Long, Troubling Conversation With Chris, The Narrator asks:]
…“ "Was it better before we left Chicago?" .. "Yes." .. "How? What do you remember?" .. "That was fun." .. "Fun?" .. "Yes," he says, and is quiet. Then he says, "Remember the time we went to look for beds?" .. "That was fun? " .. "Sure," he says, and is quiet for a long time. Then he says, "Don’t you remember? You made me find all the directions home.—You used to play games with us. You used to tell us all kinds of stories and we’d go on rides to do things and now you don’t do anything." .. "Yes, I do." .. "No, you don’t! You just sit and stare and you don’t do anything!" I hear him crying again.” Cont. Next.) Redcrest, CA.

At The Close Of Chapter 30, The Narrator In The Damp Dark Of Night, Not Yet Asleep, Listens To The Wind And The Rain.
…“ [I hear him crying again.] .. Outside the rain comes in gusts against the window, and I feel a kind of heavy pressure bear down on me. He’s crying for him. It’s him he misses. That’s what the dream is about. In the dream.. .. For what seems like a long time I continue to listen to the cricking sound of the wall heater and the wind and the rain against the roof and window. Then the rain dies away and there is nothing left but a few drops of water from the trees moving in an occasional gust of wind.” (End Chapter. 30.)

…NOTE1: In the above passage, as is always the case, the ZMM Enthusiast needs to be alert to Author Robert Pirsig’s Metaphoric Bridge Connections. … Here, all the ZMM Narrator has is “ the cricking sound of the wall heater and the wind and the rain against the roof and window. Then the rain dies away and there is nothing left.” …Please especially notice the hopeless finality of these words => “ nothing left.”
…NOTE2: In the passage above, we learn of the total hopelessness of the Narrator’s situation. And, note well how Author Robert Pirsig very powerfully emphasizes the finality of this situation, by (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) abruptly ending Chapter 30 here.

Where Are the ZMM Narrator's Large Green Slugs?
…The ZMM Narrator, Not Living In California, Did Not Know The Correct Name. Links Below Say => “Yellow Banana Slug”.
….“ In the morning I am stopped by the appearance of a green slug on the ground. It’s about six inches long, three-quarters inch wide and soft and almost rubbery and covered with slime like some internal organ of an animal. .. All around me it’s damp and wet and foggy and cold, but clear enough to see that the motel we have stopped in is on a slope with apple trees down below and grass and small weeds under them covered with dew or just rain that hasn’t run off. I see another slug and then another—my God, the place is crawling with them. .. When Chris comes out I show one to him. It moves slowly like a snail across a leaf. He has no comment. .. We leave …. ” (Cont Next)
On the old road into Redcrest, CA. The Narrator’s passage well fits the Redcrest Resort, Shown /\ Above /\ Photo. The scene’s location most likely would be near the door of their room.
….Also, fitting the Narrator’s words, The Redcrest Cabins are well back from the highway. From the doors of the rooms, there is a long slope down where there could have been plenty of apple trees 32 years ago.
….But I searched all over and did NOT find any Slugs. I asked people there about the Banana Slugs, and no one seemed to know anything about them.
More About “Yellow Banana Slugs”.
….Quite by chance, I asked my son David about the slugs. He had lived in California for about ten years, and said immediately that they were bright yellow and were called Banana Slugs. They may be found in the California cool, moist. coastal redwood forests, where cold ocean fog regularly waters the foliage.

Complete With Ducks, Here Is the Only Pond In the Area. This Used To Be the Town Park,
…But Continues As a Picnic Area With A Very Commercialized “Drive-Thru Redwood Tree”.
…This is The Top Local “Touristy Attraction”!
…“[Farther on at Leggett] we see a tourist duck pond and we buy Cracker Jacks and throw them to the ducks and he does this in the most unhappy way I have ever seen. ” (Cont Next)
Duck Pond at Drive Thru Tree Leggett, CA. . As a remnant of the 1920’s, this “Drive-Thru Redwood Tree”, is a giant redwood tree, with a hole carved in it for cars to drive through. I remember seeing old 20’s postcards showing trees like this.
…Based on his other statements about natural environment “tourist attractions”, we may deduce that the Narrator would be quite disgusted with the “Drive-Thru Redwood Tree”
… ZMM makes no mention of this tree in spite of (or perhaps because of) the fact that 1) The other tourists are obviously thrilled by this novelty and what I would call a “violation” of nature, and 2) This is an obvious local landmark.
…Like other tourist facilities (or things the Narrator doesn’t like), it is pointedly unmentioned in ZMM!!
…I have decided not to show here my photos of this tree. In fact, I am in a quandary whether to even to show any of my photos of this tree in My Personal Experiences Album elsewhere in ZMMQG. Let me know your opinion.
…Just for the record, I had to pay the fee to enter the park, but I did not personally go thru the “tunnel” in the tree. I was interested to see the new wood growth around the cut edges of the tunnel. This new growth, now about 2.5 inches thick, is curving around the edge of the “hole”. The tree has worked for at least 70 years trying to close-up this opening, but otherwise seems to be able to survive!
