This Line of Relatively Large Trees Signifies a Major Stream.
…. Beyond Road pavement, You See The Entrance Pavement Into =>The "Montana Department of Wildlife Fishing Access " At Rock Creek.
….This /\ Above /\ Photo Is Part of A Panorama Taken At Same Location As Previous Photo Of Trees At Canal.
…. [“ We are following a creek to its source. It contains water that was probably snow less than an hour ago.“]
About 9.2 miles prior to Red Lodge, MT. The /\ Above /\ Photo is along US-212, halfway between Roberts, MT, & Fox MT, , which are about 7 mile apart
…. As I traveled this way in 2002, I was actively looking for a good place to photograph the stream mentioned by the ZMM Narrator. I was convinced the stream was here, but nevertheless was NOT able to find it until I got to Red Lodge!
….In addition, I completely missed the presence of a continuing low bluffs (showing the edges of the valley), on both sides of the highway, AND missed the fact that I was traveling for over an hour in a relatively flat valley between the confining bluffs at edges.
….As I have mentioned in previous photos, when looking for streams or rivers in drylands, I had not yet learned “how to look for” a continuing line of trees in these otherwise dry grassy areas. ….So it was, that I came home with NO 2002 photos of Rock Creek prior to Red Lodge, MT.
….Thus in 2006, I was wise to the problem, and was looking even more closely! However (as mentioned in previous photos), I STILL missed all of my 3 chances to find & Photograph Rock Creek, for example where US-212, actually crosses this stream … So, when traveling along US-212, I saw a sign saying => "Montana Department of Wildlife Fishing Access ", I stomped on the brakes hard and stopped here, off the highway.

About 9.2 miles prior to Red Lodge, MT. This Rock Creek Access Turn-Off is Along US-212, halfway between Roberts, MT, & Fox MT , which are about 7 miles apart.
…. Here I discovered that Montana Wildlife Department had constructed a large parking lot and stream side camping sites.
….We learned from a fishing guide WebSite, that this is something that Montana has done at some 80 different public sites in order to bring in fishing tourism. From this we learn how to find ~90 good, natural environment, moderate $ cost, camp sites, all over Montana!

This Line Of Trees Signifies the Presence of Rock Creek Several Miles Further South of The Location of The Previous Three Photos.
….[“We are following a creek to its source. It contains water that was probably snow less than an hour ago.“]
….As Mentioned in a Previous Photo => The ZMM Narrator’s “following a creek to its source“ is a ‘Master Motif’
About ~7.2 miles to Red Lodge, MT.
The Narrator Repeatedly Mentioned “Following a Creek To Its Source.”: But Where Is The Stream?
….The previous photo mentions my non perceiving of where streams and rivers were in dry lands such as Montana, and that I needed to “learn how to look for” lines of trees to see where the ZMM Narrator’s stream is.
….Here I finally realized that => The /\ Above /\ Photo AND My Several Other Photos Saying => “A Line Of Trees Signifies the Presence of Water From A Stream Or Canal” are together, good examples of what to look for.
….And now that I’m at home, I HAVE FINALLY learned this lesson, and in my saved photos can now easily pick out => The more or less continuing lines of trees along the road that indicate Rock Creek. And as well, I now also easily discern the presence of a continuing low bluff on both sides of the highway and o/c Rock Creek.
…. These two features ALSO can be seen in my several panorama shots from along this US-212 road to Red Lodge, MT. . … Please send Email => If you want me to hurry up and Post These Panoramas in ZMMQ Panorama Photo Gallery.

…. “Everything is so intense in this sunlight. Dark shadows, bright light. Dark blue sky. The sun is bright and hot when we’re in it, but when we pass under trees along the road, it’s suddenly cold. ”
“Dark Shadows, Bright Light. .... Hot Sun .... In Shade, Suddenly Cold. ”
….These Above Four ZMM Phrases (And MANY Others Similar) “The Guidebook To ZMM” Calls ‘Master Motifs'. =>
….Such Phrases, On Purpose Repeated Many-A-Time, Are deployed For Emphasis. => For Example, In the Mountains Ahead => The ZMM Narrator Will Use These Four ZMM Phrases When discussing his “High Country” , Experiences & Philosophy,.
….When you see any of these ’Master Motifs’ (or any other similar), you should be thinking what this emphasis is meant to signify, and why it is emphasized.
Along US-212, Getting Close To Red Lodge, MT.
….After Laurel MT, I Started Looking For Travel Scenery Showing The Narrator’s ‘Master Motifs’ Such As => “Dark Shadows, Bright Light. Dark Blue Sky.”, The sun was indeed very intense and very hot, and the shade was wonderful when you could find it!
….Generally, there were no trees near the highway. Even higher in the mountains, where there are more trees, I still did not much see trees that would provide morning shade “, it’s suddenly cold. ” overhamging the main highway.
….With the exception of trees in towns, I did not discover any possibility of shade from “road-overhanging-trees” until well into the U-shaped valley of Rock Creak after Red Lodge, MT.
….Even in towns one must look hard to find parking in shade. I did find shade in Joliet, MT. Although the shade was hardly “cold“, it was a most welcomed relief for my lunch and my study-up for ZMM there.
….But otherwise I did NOT find good examples, even in the higher mountains ahead. Likewise, with the exception of trees in towns, I did not discover any possibility of shade, even from road-overhanging-trees, until I found just one place, which was well into the U-shaped valley after Red Lodge.
….NOTE: What The Narrator Says About Bright Sun And Dark Shadows, Is Mostly Contrary To My Photographs Here, And Then In The “High Country” Ahead. Compared to The ZMM Narrator’s evident experience, my mountain photos show the effect of much higher atmospheric humidity, which is due to higher moist springtime atmosphere, and unlike the Narrator’s dry summertime sky a month later.
….Hence, as you will see => many of my “High Country” photos have clouds, hazy atmosphere, with no sun, nor any shadows. Even the above photo, among the best I have for a “dark shadow”, hardly shows the Narrator's "black shadows”.
….If you know of good examples, please send an email.

On US-212, Looking SSW Towards Red Lodge, MT,
….Just One Tenth Mile Closer To Red Lodge, MT, Than Previous Photo.
…….Again Look Close To See The “Looms Directly Ahead.” ….. The Ever Larger, And The Grey Outline of the Ominous =>
…. “ High Dark Absaroka Range ” …… Which Is The “Back-Drop” For The Town Itself.
…[.“ Everything is so intense in this sunlight. Dark shadows, bright light. Dark blue sky. The sun is bright and hot when we’re in it, but when we pass under trees along the road, it’s suddenly cold. ”]
Along US-212, 1.4 miles before Red Lodge, MT.
CONTINUED TOPICS FROM PREVIOUS PHOTO =>
…. “Dark Shadows, Bright Light. .... Hot Sun .... In Shade, Suddenly Cold. ”
….These Four ZMM Phrases (And MANY Others Similar) are “Master Motifs” as emphasized in -> “The Guidebook To ZMM” =>
EXPLANATION:
….Here and especially in the ZMM Narrator’s ‘Master Motif’ of => “The High Country” of the Mountains ahead …. When you read the Narrator's “Master Motifs” of dark sky“, you should realize that this means a "black-blue sky", which is almost no sky at all, especially straight up.
….This kind of sky happens at very high altitude and especially when the atmosphere is devoid of moisture. This sky condition lets in the searing illumination of the brilliant sun.
…. The Sun’s Super Bright Areas, vividly contrast with ~Totally Black Shadows! Such contrast is just like photos taken in outer space. Such conditions allow us (and The ZMM Narrator) to "search-light" examine closely everything, including the Motifs of =>
…..a) The “pinpoints of color in the flowers, rivulets of snow melt,” . and other mountain scenery along the road.
…. b) And most ESPECIALLY The ZMM Narrator’s discussion of The Philosophy(s) of “The High Country” .
…..c) AND of course the Narrator’s “High Country of The Mind!” , is another ‘Master Motif’’ !
…. Many Times On The Road (And Photos) Ahead => The ZMM Narrator Will Come Back To This “Dark Shadows, Bright Light. Dark Blue Sky. .... Hot .... Suddenly Cold. ” Most Especially => In His ”High Country” , AND => In His ”High Country On The Mind.” .
…. This O/C Means The ZMM Narrator’s High Philosophy Discussions!.
..This emphasis is especially evident in conjunction with "the tunnel of snow" shown in a Forthcoming Photo..
The Idea Of A “Master Motif” Is Discussed In => “The Guidebook To ZMM”.
….But In A Literary Work, What Is A Motif ?
….Motif is a literary technique that consists of a repeated element that has symbolic significance to a literary work. Sometimes, a motif is a recurring image. Other times, it’s a repeated word, phrase, or topic expressed in language. A motif can be a recurring situation or action. It can be a sound or smell, a temperature, even a color.
….The key aspect is that a motif repeats, and through this repetition helps to illuminate the dominant ideas, central themes, and deeper meaning of a story.
…. For A Very Good & Complete Further Discussion, Explanation & Details Re MOTIF, Click Here: Then scroll beyond the (several not so useful photos), to continue reading this Well Explained Page.

Phaedrus’ Mountain World?
…. “He would use this route to get into the high country, then backpack in from the road for three or four or five days, then come back out for more food and head back in again, needing these mountains in an almost physiological way. The train of his abstractions became so long and so involved he had to have the surroundings of silence and space here to hold it straight. It was as though hours of constructions would have been shattered by the least distraction of other thought or other duty. “

…….. A sudden cross-gust of cold air comes heavy with the smell of pines, and soon another and another, and as we approach Red Lodge I’m shivering. “
On US-212 Approaching North Edge of Downtown Business District Red Lodge MT. As I traveled to Red Lodge, I was hot in the sun, but cool in the shade. Most certainly motorcycle riders would be putting on their coats.
MORE MOTIF EXPLANATION:
…. In the ZMM Passage Above, We See Several Added Examples of ZMM Phrases, which Are Called ‘Master Motifs' in “The Guidebook To ZMM”. These ‘Master Motifs' are written into ZMM, Many-A-Time as A Repeated Theme for Special Emphasis
..A) The "Master Motifs" For The Above ZMM Passage Are => LATERAL MOTION, and WIND (Gust).
..B) The "Master Motifs" Mentioned In Previous Photos Have Been => MOUNTAIN looming Ahead, … FOLLOWING STREAM to its SOURCE … DARK SHADOWS … BRIGHT LIGHT. ..... HOT SUN .... IN SHADE, SUDDENLY COLD, and HIGH COUNTRY.
..C) More Examples of ZMM "Master Motifs" Will Be In Forthcoming Photos.
MORE MOTIF EXPLANATION: WIND:
….Also, you should especially study the narrator’s abrupt shift to his words, saying THREE gusts in => “ sudden cross-gust of cold air …. and soon another and another“
. ….Then add to this, the fear connotation of “ I’m shivering.“
These are Master Motifs, but with MUCH BIGGER than ordinary emphasis! We are supposed to wonder what major “fearful arrival” is being announced by the included words => “ The wind” This two word phrase, is pointedly brought up 22 times in ZMM! And thus “ Wind” is another master motif for you to begin looking for in your reading of ZMM!
….************** …
….At The /\ Above /\ Photo Location
… Rt-212 Will Turn Slightly Left & Go Directly South Through the Downtown Business District.
Also, In The /\ Above /\ Photo You Should Well Notice =>
……The Central Mountain Range That Fades To The Right Into The Distance.
….Please => Remember this highest mountain spire. You will see it again “straight up Main Street” in NEXT Photo.
….After the slight turn left, US-212 continues ~straight South, to the Southern fringe of Red Lodge Community, where it then turns to the Southwest with Rock Creek, and follow between the valley’s confining bluffs, to eventually reach the base of those mountains.
….(Per hindsight, a better photo is needed. => It would be great to have a telephoto view from this same spot or closer to town, to best illustrate => “ The high, dark Absaroka Range looms directly ahead.“.)

Court House Lawn and General Town View.
….AND Beyond The Buildings, We Can See The ZMM Narrator’s “Dark Ominous Mass Beyond …”
….[ “ .. as a result of all these fragments, and thinking [Phaedrus], returned to the University to study philosophy. His lateral drift was ended. He was actively in pursuit of something now.
…….. A sudden cross-gust of cold air comes heavy with the smell of pines, and soon another and another, and as we approach Red Lodge I’m shivering. “ ]
“….At Red Lodge the road’s almost joined to the base of the mountain. The dark ominous mass beyond dominates even the roofs of the buildings on either side of the main street. ”
Red Lodge, MT. The ZMM Restaurant is two blocks “up hill” from the /\ Above /\ Shown Court House on same side.
EVEN MORE MOTIF EXPLANATION:
In The Following Two ZMM Phrases: Especially Note =>
….The ZMM Narrator’s Using Item B) To Suddenly EMPHASIZE Item A)
..A) “ .. His lateral drift was ended. He was actively in pursuit of something now. .. “
..B) “ ..A sudden cross-gust of cold air comes heavy … “
*********************
THEN, IN THE BELOW: ESPECIALLY NOTE =>
….The ZMM Narrator’s using “Master Motif” C) Below, to EMPHASIZE the fear-generating ‘Master Motif’ item D) next down =>
..C) “dark ominous mass .... dominates .... “ followed by
..D) Fear generating double repeat => “ “and soon another and another”
*********************
AND THEN, IN THE BELOW: ESPECIALLY NOTE => The Added Warnings Are From “The Wind” (Gust) =>
..E) “sudden cross-gust of cold air comes heavy with the smell of pines,.“
*********************
NOW PUTTING THIS ALTOGETHER, WE SEE THESE ~”WIND WARNINGS” => “SUDDEN CROSS-GUST“ ARE **FROM** THOSE “DARK OMINOUS” MASSIVE MOUNTAINS,
….So, all this combines into a bigger, ever more forceful than ordinary emphasis. We are to wonder what is going to happen in those mountains. This is Author Robert Pirsig’s ~”Special Emphasis” for you, the reader, to begin worrying & thinking deeply about !!
New Topic:
….Please Also Especially Note the Narrator's “smell of pines“.While I was in Red Lodge, I attempted to identify the “smell of pines.“-But could not identify this, until just prior to my departure from Red Lodge. … My notes for Red Lodge verbatim say: …. “open car door -- smell pine -- different from pines at home = sweet perfume -- altitude 5733.”
….. But even earlier, just before I took this /\ Above /\ Photo, I smelled a sweet pollen-ly perfume: Following the wind, I found that this came from a Huge Beautiful Mountain Laurel! Bush on the next street East.

….In ZMM, Another “Master Motif”is ~“WIND” Which Is Often Mentioned As Warnings or Announcements.
…..However, these are not given in any set pattern as to how these “Wind” passages are introduced, as you’ll see below.
…. “The Guidebook To ZMM” Mentions “Master Motif” => “WIND”, And Lists In ZMM (New Age Edition) Where To Find Them, And Shows These Two Examples =>
…1) ZMM Page 32 “Except for the wind through the screens of the motel window it is quiet. The thought of all that wind sweeping toward us across the open fields of the prairie is a tranquil one and I feel lulled by it.”
…2) ZMM Page 152 “People keep looking for branch extensions of reason that will cover art’s more recent occurrences, but the answers aren’t in the branches, they’re at the roots." …” A rush of wind comes furiously now, down from the mountaintop. "The ancient Greeks," I say, "who were the inventors of classical reason, knew better than to use it exclusively to foretell the future. They listened to the wind and predicted the future from that. That sounds insane now. But why should the inventors of reason sound insane?"”
…AND, Another More Complex Example Is ZMM Chapter 13 Page 153 In => The Narrator’s Statements To Gennie & Bob DeWeese => .
…. "DeWeese asks, "Does this tie in with what you were doing on ‘Quality’?"
"It’s the direct result of it," I say.
….I remember something and look at DeWeese. "Didn’t you advise me to drop it?"
"I said no one had ever succeeded in doing what you were trying to do."
"Do you think it’s possible?"
…."I don’t know. Who knows?" His expression is really concerned. "A lot of people are listening better these days. Particularly the kids. They’re really listening . . . and not just at you—to you . . . to you. It makes all the difference."
….The wind coming down from the snowfields up above sounds for a long time throughout the house. It grows loud and high as if in hope of sweeping the whole house, all of us, away into nothing, leaving the canyon as it once was, but the house stands and the wind dies away again, defeated. Then it comes back, feinting a light blow from the far side, then suddenly a heavy gust from our side. I keep listening to the wind," I say. I add, "I think when the Sutherlands have left, Chris and I should do some climbing up to where that wind starts."
…. In ZMM There Are 68 Instances Of The Stand-Alone Word “Wind” .
….And, in most of these in Mr. Pirsig’s writing, we should look for => An extra special emphasis, connotation, meaning, or sense, related to the ZMM Narrator’s Chautauqua Topic.

In /\ Above /\ Photo This Iridescent Ceramic Vase Is Recognized By Tina DeWeese: Tina Is Artist Daughter Of Gennie & Robert DeWeese, Who Were Good Friends of ZMM Author Robert Pirsig: Gennie and Robert Were Much Featured in ZMM Book, As Practically All Of Chapter 14.
…When shown the /\ Above /\ Photo, Tina in email of March 19, 2021 wrote =>
“I’m not certain, but I think the artist who made this pot was Brian Persha. These were his colors. He also often used animal motifs … a friend and colorful character from the Bozeman Arts Community. Here’s his obit from Dec 2020. Click Here.
….SIDE NOTE: The distance from Bozeman, MT to Red Lodge, MT is ~145 miles, so it is easy for the work of an Artist of Bozeman, MT, to show up in a store in Red Lodge, MT.

Looking Straight South: A View of Main Street.
….[ “.... A sudden cross-gust of cold air comes heavy with the smell of pines, and soon another and another, and as we approach Red Lodge I’m shivering.“ ].
….” At Red Lodge the road’s almost joined to the base of the mountain. ” …
Downtown Business District Red Lodge, MT. As we look at these photos of Red Lodge and Forthcoming of The Beartooth Highway, we should remember that neither the ZMM Narrator nor Author Robert Pirsig have much use for what we ordinary mortals would call “Tourist Attractions”, even if they are full of "Real World Experiences” or “Natural Scenery”.
….We see this later in ZMM where emerge The ZMM Narrator’s negative comments Re Yellowstone National Park and Crater Lake National Park,.
…. It is also evident for similar reasons that => The ZMM Narrator completely bypasses and never mentions many, many, quite interesting places, all of them quite close to the ZMM travel route!!
…. Actual Examples Of This "Negativity" To Tourist Attractions, Are Mention In Forthcoming Photos, Which Are These =>
….1) Narrator's glum (almost negative) statement re his own Beartooth Highway Tourist Photos => “At a turnout on the road we stop, take some record photographs to show we have been here”. This in on a Forthcoming Photo of the first rest area of Beartooth Highway.
….2) “The “Drive-Through” Hole In Redwood Tree” in Leggett CA, and
….3) The touring the ZMM Route through several "Fantastic Giant Redwoods Forests" in Northern CA, near Pacific Ocean.
….These, and many other places, you will see examples of the Narrator's treatment, which is usually to ignore these attractions, with nary a hint of their presence!
NEW TOPIC: BETTER PHOTOS NEEDED =>
….Please send email if you can help, such as =>
..1) A telephoto view from this same spot would be great!
..2) Also, photos to best illustrate that Red Lodge was originally a mining town with photos of the old mines. mine dumps, and old railroad tracks.
..3) Also, photos of Winter Ski Shops and other aspects of The Tourist Industry needed.

“ The Dark Ominous Mass Beyond …. ”
….The Mountain Seems to Be Part of the Town.
…. “ The dark ominous mass beyond dominates even the roofs of the buildings on either side of the main street.…. ”

The Below Continues “THE RED LODGE STORY” =>
…. Eventually the coal mines at Red Lodge were exhausted, and the town was threatened with dying. Many Colorado Silver Mines became ghost towns during this era. of Colorado Mining History. Faced with the fact that their town was “in the middle of nowhere”, The City Fathers decided Red Lodge needed a “ new personality”. (This is a term used later in ZMM.).
….The Fathers realizing the potential for tourism, no doubt lobbied hard to create a new highway right through Red Lodge over the Absaroka Mountains & The Beartooth Mountains, to Yellowstone National Park: Towns all around YNP already were quite successful in benefiting from this well-known YNP Tourist Attraction.
….Eventually, in the extreme conditions of the USA’s 1930’s Economic Depression, depression era Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects were created all over USA, And WPA Projects Were Created All Over Montana. Click Here. .
….AND Similar To The Condition Of Communities In The Appalachian Mountains, AND From Much Political Action =>
….There started much hard work & human creativity, which became for example => The Blue Ridge Parkway and The Beartooth Highway (respectively in the Central Appalachian Mountains and in Southern Montana Mountains). These massive Federal Projects had similar motivations, federal funding, tourist success, and local economic boost.
… The Works Progress Administration (WPA) ( Renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration) was an American New Deal Agency, employing millions of job-seekers (mostly unskilled men) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. It was established on May 6, 1935, by presidential order, as a key part of the Second New Deal. Click Here For Entire Wikipedia Article.

Motorcycles on Main Street.
…. “We park the cycles and unpack them to remove warm clothing.“
Downtown Business District Red Lodge, MT. Here on a sunny day, it was very comfortable in the sun, but somewhat cool in the shade. Most certainly motorcycle riders would be putting on their coats for the ride into the mountains! However, the motorcycle riders I saw here usually did not have on coats.

RED LODGE AND THE MYTHIC WEST: COAL MINERS TO COWBOYS. ….. by Bonnie Christensen ….2002 ….. ISBN 978-0-7006-1198-0.

…. “IN SEARCH OF" A PUBLIC IDENTITY: THE CASE OF RED LODGE, MONTANA.” => A BOOK REVIEW BY W. Thomas White.
******
…..The West, like America in general, has been shrouded in mythology. For centuries as newcomers (as well as newcomer hopefuls and those who sought to attract them) imposed their own notions and sense of identity upon the land for a wide variety of reasons…. From New York to Anaheim, Americans have constructed a plethora of identities for particular locales. … In this study, Ms Bonnie Christensen takes a close look at the changing persona of Red Lodge, Montana, from its founding in the late-nineteenth century to the close of the twentieth century. There, local opinion makers first denied, then embraced notions of the Old West. Not surprisingly, they did not base their quest on empirical research. Rather, they followed a process similar to their counterparts in other small towns.
....This small mountain town had its beginnings as part of the industrial West, built on coal mining for the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1889. . That activity, replete with newly arrived European immigrants, absentee corporate ownership, and labor-management conflict, defined the reality of the town until the late 1920s. The first generation of boosters, however, invoked images of a growing, progressive town and agricultural center--cowboys and their employers as well as Native Americans were decidedly unwelcome in Red Lodge's first public persona. Although they embraced the aging mountain man John "Liver-Eating" Johnson, who served as constable at the time, opinion makers eschewed the popular Wild West imagery, preferring to attract settlers by touting a peaceful, progressive Main Street that offered opportunity to all.
...When the Northern Pacific finally closed its mines, . however, survival required new attractions and new industry. Tourism, and with it a new public identity, quickly surfaced. To meet those demands, Red Lodge entrepreneurs quickly embraced the once despised Wild West. Merchants erected false storefronts, former miners donned Western garb (or at least what popular opinion decreed was "true" Western clothing), and the town established its widely publicized rodeo. Even images of Native Americans appeared in signage, such as that of the Red Lodge Cafe, publications, and souvenirs, as the town struggled to attract visitors.
