As Stated By The ZMM Narrator, Indeed Wear Cupped Stone Steps Lead to The Great Heavy Front Door.
…. Notice That The Steps Are Of Durable Granite And The Stone Used Other Places For Decorative Trim Is Merely Sandstone, On This Otherwise All Brick Building.

….[ “… "Why are we going inside?" .
. "Shh. Just don’t say anything now." .

... “. I open the great heavy outside door and enter. .“ ]
…. “Inside are more stairs, worn and wooden. They creak underfoot and smell of a hundred years of sweeping and waxing. Halfway up I stop and listen. There’s no sound at all.
.... Chris whispers, "Why are we here?" .. I just shake my head. I hear a car go by outside.
.... Chris whispers, "I don’t like it here. It’s scary in here."
.... "Go outside then," I say. .. "You come too." .. "Later"
…”No, now." He looks at me and sees I’m staying. His look is so frightened I’m about to change my mind, but then suddenly his expression breaks and he turns and runs down the stairs and out the door before I can follow him.
….The big heavy door closes down below, and I’m all alone here now.

Ever Since ~2003, The Wrong Photo, For Illustrating ZMM Narrator’s =>
“Inside There Are More Stairs, Worn And Wooden."

…… When my 2002 Photos of Montana Hall were being taken, I failed to realize the above ZMM Narrator’s description =>. “Inside there are more stairs, worn and wooden", referred to stairs specifically IMMEDIATELY inside the Front Door, and NOT to be confused with => The More Dramatic Three Flights of Double Set Of Stairs at each end of Montana Hall..
….By contrast the Front Door stairs go up just one half level to the First Floor
..****************..
….Consequently, in my first visits to Montana Hall => Yours Truly, did not enough realize these “Stairs Immediately Inside the Front Door” even existed (and thus remember) that I should get a photo of them.”
….It is only in just now revising the Captions Of The Montana Hall Photo Sequence (posted this Album ever since ~2003) => That I come to realize => “Oh No, this earlier Photo Sequence, showed only the Stairs at each END of Montana Hall, and this has the wrong interpretation of the above ZMM Passages.” .
AN **AHA** REALIZATION STORY =>
….This “Oh No Realization” => Depended On My Knowing There Existed => “A Stairs Immediately Inside The Front Door”!
….HERE IS THE STORY =>

…….It was on Aug 6, 2018, when Film Producer Dennis Davis & I were on Campus for his Video Filming for his “Pirsig’s Journey Documentary” . Mr. Davis had just finished, and we temporarily stored our equipment right beside these “Inside there are more stairs, worn and wooden", while we went further upstairs to find out more about where Sarah Vinke & Robert Pirsig had their Offices and Classrooms, in Montana Hall.
….Also, while In Montana Hall, I had wanted to give a courtesy visit to a MSC Lady Staff Member in the University Research Office. We of course asked her about Locations of Vinke & Pirsig Offices.
….Serendipity Strikes! => She gave us paper copies (with photos) of an email from Mr. Robert Pirsig himself giving the exact locations. (See Next Photos).
….Mission accomplished => We went back to the “Inside there are more stairs, worn and wooden", for our equipment, thus solidifying their existence into my memory ever since !!
..****************..
Thanks To Film Producer Dennis Davis For His “Just A Little Gift” Video
….Which In Turn Provided The Screen Capture For The /\ Above /\ Photo:
……Continuing from above “THE STORY”.

“Just A Little Gift” was video captured during above mentioned “Aug 6, 2018, Video Filming”
…. AND in the absence of any Specific Factual Photo for the above ZMM Passage =>. Indeed, it’s very nice to have Mr. Davis’s Video, since it provided the needed imagery for the /\ Above /\ Screen Capture Photo.
….This very appropriate image helps the reader to visualize that just inside Montana Hall => “ there are more stairs, worn and wooden.

Yes! Inside Montana Hall, Is Sort of a Scary Place!! =>
….Especially When We Are Standing On These => “Inside Are More Stairs, Worn And Wooden.

….[ “I open the great heavy outside door and enter. Inside are more stairs, worn and wooden. They creak underfoot and smell of a hundred years of sweeping and waxing. Halfway up I stop and listen. There’s no sound at all.

...."Later."
…."No, now."

]

Montana Hall, Montana State University, Bozeman MT

….Here the perceptive ZMM Reader should pop to attention when seeing the Narrator fails to positively respond to Chris’s obvious fear! => “.Chris whispers, "Why are we here?"
....I just shake my head. I hear a car go by outside..

AND Pop To Attention When Reading => A Seeming Useless, Out of Place Pointless Phrase => Such As => I Hear A Car Go By Outside.
….In ZMM, there are NO Useless Wasted Words!
…… In this case (& others Similar), the reader should =. “Pause and Think Beyond The “Ordinary”! AND then realize this Passage, is like other phrases such as =>”..
…. “In the distance a single bird cries plaintively.
….In Other Words => OK! YES!! This Fits The Master Motif Situation!!!
….As Chris & the Narrator enter Montana Hall, the ZMM Narrator several times, even when seeing Chris’ deep fear, fails to quickly realize he should be a consoling father, and immediately help Chris.
….Here as in other cases, the Narrator practically never realizes, he could just as well temporally set aside his own egotistical concerns. He has plenty of time. After all this is a “Vacation”, to help get on better terms with Chris!
EXPLANATION => …. In such Master Motif situations, Author Robert Pirsig is telling us, he in retrospect knows that => He, as author, recognizes that his writing into ZMM as a Novel, shows the Narrator’s “Unsympathetic, Bad Behavior To Chris”: And this very Master Motif Method, is his Author’s coded short hand way to tell us, he, as Author, very well knows this!

The /\ Above /\ Photo Was Taken Early August 1978, By The Then Professor Of English Gary Wegner.
….Here Is What He Says About …. The Start Of Their Trip To Bozeman. MT, Along The ZMM Route.
….”Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is a narrative about a motorcycle trip that its author, Robert Pirsig, took in the summer of 1968, accompanied by his son, Chris, and his neighbors, John and Sylvia Sutherland. Pirsig's journey begins in St. Paul, Minnesota on Monday, July 8 of 1968 and ends in San Francisco on Wednesday, July 24. “
….”Ten years later, in the summer of 1978, four years after the publication of Pirsig's novel, my wife and I retraced part of his journey. We left Spring Green, Wisconsin on a Saturday, July 29, 1978. Twenty-five miles down the road in Richland Center, our luggage rack broke. We briefly considered giving up, then said the hell with it and bought a new one. That is the best $75.00 we ever spent. “
….”The end of the first day saw us in Paynesville, Minnesota, distance covered 354 miles. On our second day, we passed through Breckenridge Minnesota, the first town mentioned in Pirsig's book. Breckenridge is right on the border. Of course, I had to have my wife pose for a quick picture. On the outskirts of Breckenridge were hundreds and hundreds of acres of sunflowers. The next town on Pirsig's route is Wyndmere where an overpowering storm threatens to engulf them. When they finally stop for the night in Oakes, ND and sign in at the motel, Sylvia notices that Pirsig's hands are unsteady. She says, "You look awfully pale. Did that lightning shake you up? You look like you'd seen a ghost." Little does she know.”

Not as what he could be or should be but as himself. A place all receptive—listening. He gave everything to it. This wasn’t one room, this was a thousand rooms, changing each day with the storms and snows and patterns of clouds on the mountains, with each class, and even with each student. This Montana Hall Floor Plan Shows Sarah’s and Pirsig’s Office Desk Locations As-Well-As The English Department Location On ~2nd Floor MSU’s Montana Hall.
….Notice At Right Word “North”, Which Is The FRONT DOOR SIDE Of Montana Hall.
……Please Use This Floor Plan, To Help Your Understanding Of The Action Of The ZMM Passage Next Down

….[A Framed Print] “had an appeal to him that was irrelevant to the art in that its subject, a kind of Gothic cathedral, created from semiabstract lines and planes and colors and shades, seemed to reflect his mind’s vision of the Church of Reason and that was why he’d put it here. All this comes back now. onto the Madison Range and watched the storms come in and while watching this valley before me now through this window here, now . . . started the whole thing, the whole madness, right here! This is the exact spot!
….And that door leads to Sarah’s office. Sarah! Now it comes down! She came trotting by with her watering pot between those two doors, going from the corridor to her office, and she said, "I hope you are teaching Quality to your students." This in a la-de-da, singsong voice of a lady in her final year before retirement about to water her plants. That was the moment it all started. That was the seed crystal.
….Seed crystal. A powerful fragment of memory comes back now. The laboratory. Organic chemistry. He was working with an extremely supersaturated solution when something similar had happened. …..
….The one sentence "I hope you are teaching Quality to your students" was said to him, and within a matter of a few months, growing so fast you could almost see it grow, came an enormous, intricate, highly structured mass of thought, formed as if by magic. ....
"

Montana Hall, Montana State University, Bozeman, MT. In the /\ Above /\ Floor Plan => The Framed “print, Feininger’s ‘Church of the Minorites, " was likely on the long wall coming from the front of Montana Hall, since this would give “The light on the print comes from a miserable cramped window in the adjacent wall" and also be beside Pirsig’s Desk as shown.

Concerning the Narrator’s Window “Through Which He Looked Out Onto And Across The Valley Onto The Madison Range And Watched The Storms Come In.
….All assembled. worthy evidence for the location of Robert Pirsig’s Montana Hall office fits the /\ Above /\ Floor Plan: Where this plan shows that the “miserable cramped window” is on the North side of Montana Hall, which looks over Bozeman and Gallatin Valley, in which directions, only un-remarkable distant mountains Northwest and North. And the mountains visible to the Northeast are The Bridger Mountains, and continuing South are The Gallatin Mountains, where was mentioned in a Previous Photo => “The ‘Crack In The Mountains’ is where Bozeman Pass & I-90 Go Between.”

…. ….The Madison Range, and Spanish Peaks are indeed visible (depending on growth of trees) to the Southwest from Classroom Windows on South side of Montana Hall: This may have been on Pirsig’s mind in the writing process, and became one of few places where Author Robert Pirsig is factually wrong. Since from this window there can be seen only un-remarkable distant mountains, Northwest and North of Montana Hall.

“The Church of the Minorites II" (1926), by Lyonel Feininger.
…. For Phaedrus, This Was An Image Illustrating The University AS => “The Church of Reason.” .
……You Must Imagine This Painting High On the Wall, of the Phaedrus’ Old, Cramped, Dingy Office:

…. “On the way out I open one more door, compulsively. There on the wall I see something which sends a spine-tingling feeling along my neck It’s a painting. I’ve had no recollection of it but now I know he bought it and put it there.
….And suddenly I know it’s not a painting, it’s a print of a painting he ordered from New York and which DeWeese had frowned at because it was a print and prints are of art and not art themselves, a distinction he didn’t recognize at the time. But the print, Feininger’s "Church of the Minorites," had an appeal to him that was irrelevant to the art in that its subject, a kind of Gothic cathedral, created from semiabstract lines and planes and colors and shades, seemed to reflect his mind’s vision of the Church of Reason and that was why he’d put it here. All this comes back now. This was his office. A find. This is the room I am looking for!
"

Montana Hall, Montana State University, Bozeman, MT. . Lyonel Feininger’s. Original Painting, is to be found by special request at => The Walker Art Center (An Art Museum), just west of downtown Minneapolis.
… Please know that => Minneapolis is Author Pirsig’s hometown, and thus he very likely originally discovered the /\ Above /\ shown painting at The Walker Art Center. Evidently, he subsequently found where to purchase a copy for his Montana Hall Office.

….About Lyonel Feininger, The Guggenheim Museum Site says => “In Weimar, he [Feininger] worked on paintings such as Church of the Minorities II (1926), whose structural order reflects the organizational principles of classical architecture and of his own musical compositions, especially his fugues for organ. In works like Gelmeroda (1913–36), a series of oil paintings based on the medieval church near Weimar, prismatic planes form dynamic constructions producing a sense of monumentality.
SPELLING NOTE: The Walker Art Center & ZMM say Minorites, and thus is same on ZMMQ Site & Gallery. Other Sites such as Guggenheim spell Minorities.”
….Upon Seeing A (Note Card) Copy Of This Painting, Gennie DeWeese, herself trained & practicing in Abstract Art, immediately said => "This is Abstract Art, BEFORE there WAS 'Abstract Art!!'”.and continued with ~”My abstract art husband would have known Robert Pirsig was pretty unusual, sharp, & interesting, just because he owned a copy of this painting!!”

….NOTE: If you study maps Southwest of Bozeman, MT, you will see that the Madison River flows out of the Madison Range of mountains.

….A Repeat Of Discussion 3rd Photo Previous =>
….The Madison Range, and Spanish Peaks are indeed visible to the Southwest from Classroom Windows on South side of Montana Hall:
….Of course, what South View can be seen depends on which Classroom Window, what Building Level and depending on growth of trees, and how many leaves summer vs winter.

…. Due to Building Renovations ~1978, most of the building's rooms have been entirely changed. Thus it not easy to recognize where the Old Professor’s Offices or Classrooms may have been.

Flowers And Monument Announce Montana State University

END ZMM Chapter 15 & End ZMM Part II, Where The ZMM Narrator Says =>.

…. “ A few days later, when Sarah trotted by again she stopped and said, "I’m so happy you’re teaching Quality this quarter. Hardly anybody is these days."
…."Well, I am," he said. "I’m definitely making a point of it.
…."Good!" she said, and trotted on.”
[Later Paragraph ] ..
... “Three hours of sleep and he was so tired he knew he wouldn’t be up to giving a lecture that day, and besides, his notes had never been completed, so he wrote on the blackboard: "Write a 350-word essay answering the question, What is quality in thought and statement?" Then he sat by the radiator while they wrote and thought about quality himself. .. ” [Later Paragraph ] ..
... … Quality—you know what it is, yet you don’t know what it is. But that’s self-contradictory. But some things are better than others, that is, they have more quality. But when you try to say what the quality is, apart from the things that have it, it all goes poof! There’s nothing to talk about. But if you can’t say what Quality is, how do you know what it is, or how do you know that it even exists? If no one knows what it is, then for all practical purposes it doesn’t exist at all. But for all practical purposes it really does exist. What else are the grades based on? Why else would people pay fortunes for some things and throw others in the trash pile? Obviously some things are better than others—but what’s the "betterness"? -- So round and round you go, spinning mental wheels and nowhere finding anyplace to get traction. What the hell is Quality? What is it? “.
