At Left The ZMM Narrator’s Restaurant, Former Owl Café, And Later The Owl Dinner Restaurant.
….And to Right, The Sonny O’Day Bar

….“The eggs and hot cakes and coffee are from heaven. Sylvia and Chris talk intimately about his school and friends and personal things, ….

203 E. Main Street, Laurel, MT. Mr. Guenthner also explained the name for “Owl Café ”. He said that the railroad, which operated around the clock, needed meals for its employees at all hours straight through the night. Thus it was that the Northern Pacific RR, now the Burlington Northern, contracted with the restaurant to stay open all night, and supply good-old hi-energy-home-cookin’ & and lots of carry-out coffee in thermoses. Hence the names Owl AND Café’!
….Due to automation and modernization, Railroad Crews are smaller and the need for a “stay awake” program has diminished. I understand the Owl is no longer open all night. The Northern Pacific Railroad came thru this area in 1882 and the terminal plus switch yard was planned in 1907. The Owl Café opened in 1916.

NEW TOPIC: On My Second Trip Through Laurel, I Almost Did NOT Get My Interior Photograph Of The Owl Cafe' A Second Time.
….My son and I came here early evening and hungry. But we almost did not get in! That night they were hosting a big High School Reunion, and had a "CLOSED " sign on the door.
….But we did not notice it and barged right in. That was Good luck!! Because once in, we could plead that we had come all the way from South Carolina, just to be there.
… Former owner Linda Frickel and her son Dirk Frickel the current owner and chef, were very gracious and worked us into their very busy serving schedule.
….We experienced surprisingly excellent food!! And later learned the reason: Dirk had learned his cooking art very well at the Western Culinary Institute in Portland, OR. What Luck again!! WOW!!!

From Inside The Owl Café, A Picture Window View Looking To The South And a Bit West Toward The Mountains Of Southern Montana & Wyoming.

….“ …. while I listen and gaze through the large restaurant window at the storefront across the road. So different now from that lonely night in South Dakota. Beyond those buildings are mountains and snowfields. .. Sylvia says John has talked to someone in town about another route to Bozeman, south through Yellowstone Park."

203 E. Main Street, Laurel, MT. The /\ Above /\ Photo shows what the ZMM Narrator would have seen, out the front window of the Owl Café l. Beyond those buildings and a giant railroad switch yard of the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway, do lie distant mountains to the South and somewhat West. But to look in the direction of the highest mountains and Red Lodge, MT, would require looking at a considerable angle to the Southwest.
….The above ZMM Passage shows the spatial orientation ability of the Narrator, which comes from his considerable previous mountain climbing experience plus his intimate knowledge of this local area as well as the distant high mountains, in the direction of Yellowstone National Park.
….As a traveler, the Narrator would have been able to project spatially the direction of the highest mountains from a site such as the Owl Café. Author Robert Pirsig would have a similar spatial orienting ability when writing ZMM.
….Within walking distance of the Hurzler Hotel, I did not see any other Laurel restaurant that would have been a better “fit” to the clues given in ZMM.

Yup!! Here Is the Railroad Underpass Just Where the Narrator Said It Was!
….Turn South Here, To Follow US-212 ZMM Route to ZMM Town of Red Lodge, MT.

…. “We meet John again and it’s settled. Soon, beyond a railroad underpass, …..

Central Business District, Main Street, Laurel, MT. The ZMM Narrator’s “underpass“ is just a block West of the Old Owl Restaurant Location. As was the case for me in 2002, it is easy to miss the left turn South onto US-212, and turn onto the road to Red Lodge, MT.
….AND due to inattention to above ZMM Passage, I missed taking this /\ Above /\ Photo which had to wait until I returned here in 2006.

HISTORY OF RED LODGE, MONTANA: COAL MINES, RAILROAD, & THE ORIGINAL ROAD TO RED LODGE.
..A) At first Red Lodge, MT, Grew Up As A Mining Camp For Nearby Coal Mines.
I conjecture that this road from Laurel, MT (a Major Railroad Junction) to Red Lodge, MT (an eventual Coal Mining Rail Head) … was originally scouted by following Rock Creek to “The Mines”. The stream would provide water and fodder along the stream for draft animals used in the original opening this area. These Coal Mines, provided the “Motive Energy” for over 60 years of early Montana Railroad Steam Engines.
…. This “Rock Creek” emerges as very important to the ZMM Narrator, as you will see in Forthcoming Photos, where we are repeatedly told => “Following a creek to its source.”:
….The original road (now US-212), “To The Mines”, “Following a creek to its source.”, was aimed directly at the mountains behind Red Lodge, MT.
..B) Red Lodge: A Coal Town On Rock Creek, Which Is A Branch of The Clark’s Fork River. Posted on September 19, 2015 ((Concerning The original road, which is now US-212. ))
….When the Northern Pacific Railroad entered the Yellowstone Valley in the 1880s, officials and investors immediately began the search to find and acquire locally available deposits of coal [to fuel their Railroad Steam Locomotives]. First there came the Klein mines north of Billings and then by the end of the decade, the first [next] move toward mines to the south, in the Clark’s Fork Valley, at what would become Carbon County with its major town of Red Lodge.
….Development began slowly, with the Depression of 1893 intervening, but as the era’s financial and railroad magnates combined the Great Northern, the Burlington Route, and the Northern Pacific into one huge co-operative venture, they selected a new place in the Yellowstone Valley, a town called Laurel at the confluence of the Clark’s Fork and Yellowstone rivers, to connect the three railroads. In short order, a Northern Pacific Railroad spur line was built down the Clark’s Fork to the place called Red Lodge. U.S. Highway 212 follows this route, and the boom was on.
… Entering Red Lodge from the north via US-212 you encounter immediately the town’s roots as a railroad town, as the historic Northern Pacific Depot [Building] remains rooted at the head of the town. Here is where my [Carroll VanWest] long-interest with the Red Lodge story began in 1984, when I met with a small group of local historians, preservationists, and civic leaders determined to keep Red Lodge and its still intact historic environment together. The group’s vision for the depot was for it to be a visitor center, an arts center, but more than anything a community center, a visible sign of the turnaround that could happen. Already, at the head of town [town entrance], artist Peter Toth had begun the new tradition with his mammoth [Native American People] wood sculpture, “In Honor of a Proud and Noble People,” [ installed in 1979, a theme of the region .. ] This Article by Carroll VanWest.Click Here.

A Safe Place to Stop, Rest, Enjoy the Scenery, and Review ZMM.
…. we are on a twisting blacktop through fields toward the mountains up ahead. This is a road Phædrus used all the time, and flashes of his memory coincide everywhere. The high, dark Absaroka Range looms directly ahead.

Boyd, MT. 5.1 miles West Southwest of Joliet, MT. As I traveled the next ~21 miles to Red Lodge, MT the faint distant mountains’, seen in /\ Above /\ Photo, apparent size visually grew, and grew to indeed fit The ZMM Narrator’s words .... “looms directly ahead“.
….At this photo location (but on the opposite West side of the highway), is a giant gravel parking lot. Here I found a safe place to stop, rest, enjoy the scenery, and review ZMM Passages, in order to look for upcoming ZMM landscape locations.

Indeed The ZMM Narrator’s Discussion Of Philosophy Supports The Actual Road Travel & Conversely !!
…. MY RESEARCH NOTES SAY: => “Now I see again, how much the reading of ZMM’s Travel Narrative supports, reflects upon, and amplifies, by analogy, ZMM’s twisting heavy readings in philosophy, and conversely.” (NOTE: Here I said “by analogy”, but in retrospect I should have said “by metaphor, or even better “by Metaphoric Bridge Connection.)
.
…. Here in my notes I drew a wiggly, twisty line, to illustrate the twists of the highway seen already, and I anticipated at mountain switch-backs ahead.
….This phrase “LOOMS DIRECTLY AHEAD“, the Narrator uses repeatedly, and thus is a Master Motif. So also are “STREAM” and “TRAVELING TOWARDS THEIR SOURCE”. These Motifs will be discussed in the Next Two Photos, and the “stream” will be seen in Third Photo Next.
….As I drove the ZMM Route day-after-day, many, many of the Narrator’s Various Master Motifs surfaced in mind, triggered by the passing landscape.
As Will Be Further Discussed In Forthcoming Photos. =>
….These Above 3 Italic Phrases are written into ZMM, and Used Many A Time, as Repeated Themes, for Special Emphasis. “The Guidebook to ZMM” , Calls such Emphasized & Often Repeated ZMM Phrases, ‘Master Motifs'.

Shade Trees Along The highway: Looking SSW Along US-212 Towards Red Lodge, MT.
…..Stopping Here Because A Sign “Fishing Access”, Leads To Investigating /\ Above /\ Photo Scene. =>
……..The Narrator Repeatedly Mentioned “Following a Creek To Its Source.”: But Where Is The Stream?

….We are following a creek to its source. It contains water that was probably snow less than an hour ago. The stream and the road pass through green and stony fields each a little higher than before. Everything is so intense in this sunlight. Dark shadows, bright light. Dark blue sky. The sun is bright and hot when we’re in it, but when we pass under trees along the road, it’s suddenly cold.

… The /\ Above /\ Photo is along US-212, .5.0 Miles WestSouthWest from Joliet, MT, with another 9.2 miles to Red Lodge, MT. All the time I drove SSW on US-212 from Laurel, MT (June 2002), I was mindful of the above ZMM Passage, and kept looking for “ a creek ”, but mostly couldn’t find it! ….You’ll have to understand that => I’m from ~wet-lands Ohio with plentiful rain and trees everywhere. So only after many missed photo opportunities, did I slowly & eventually “did I learn* & “get into my bones” that => In the dry arid lands such as Montana, ANY concentration of trees (as in the /\ Above /\ Photo), MEANS water of a stream, a canal, or river, practically.!!
….Traveling Southwest From Laurel, MT Along Us-212, The ZMM Traveler, Looking Carefully, Will See Rock Creek => Is East. of highway, and then, just 1.5 mile Southwest of Joliet, MT, ( at an easy to miss bridge), crosses to the North, and then the Northwest side of the highway..
….Continued traveling Southwest along US-212, the ZMM Traveler, looking carefully, now will see Rock Creek is Northwest of highway: And then 6.4 Southwest of Boyd, MT= WayPt = 124.(at an easy to miss bridge), crosses to the Southeast side
….These two “creek-crossings” somehow, escaped my attention: Was this because Rock Creek has already been greatly depleted by the numerous irrigation canals, or too much obscured by trees?
….Thus, at two places (after Joliet, MT & after Boyd, MT, I actually crossed over Rock Creek, but failed to recognize “That’s what I was looking for”! Thus I twice missed my “Photo Op”!!

….I was hardly any better on my trip Sept 2006. I again missed BOTH of these “crossings”, and got another ~5 miles all the way to /\ Above /\ Photo location, until I first found a place to get photos of Rock Creek!
….SIDE NOTE: In /\ Above /\ Photo, looking SSW towards Red Lodge, MT, Rock Creek is to the left, which is East of the highway, and remains so until (another easy to miss), “crossing”, 5.2 miles SW of Red lodge, MT.
….As the ZMM Narrator says => “The facts are there but you don’t see them. You’re looking right at them, but they don’t yet have enough value.

….In The Photo /\ Above /\ Photo, The Line Of Trees On Both Sides Of The Road, Mark An Irrigation Canal. This Canal, “Finn Ditch”, Gets Its Water From Rock Creek, which here is on the left (East) of the road. Here Rock Creek is located in a similar line of trees, as will be seen in the Next Photo. More examples will be in Four Forthcoming Photos.
….SUMMARY => In this dry climate, trees would pretty much NOT be here, as is shown in /\ Above /\ Photo, without a stream, a canal, or sponsorship of humans. The ZMM Traveler needs to “learn how to look”, and see where the water is, as discerned from “a concentration of trees”, from here, all the way on into Red Lodge, MT.

In fact, you will see on the map that the highway stays in the valley "flood plain" between the fairly high bluffs. This map shows Rock Creek is East of the highway within 0.4 miles from the creek-crossing (South of Roberts, MT.) all the way thru Red Lodge, and well into the mountain canyon, where it again changes sides.

About 9.2 miles prior to Red Lodge, MT. The /\ Above /\ Photo is along US-212, halfway between Roberts, MT, & Fox MT, , which are about 7 mile apart
…. As I traveled this way in 2002, I was actively looking for a good place to photograph the stream mentioned by the ZMM Narrator. I was convinced the stream was here, but nevertheless was NOT able to find it until I got to Red Lodge!
….In addition, I completely missed the presence of a continuing low bluffs (showing the edges of the valley), on both sides of the highway, AND missed the fact that I was traveling for over an hour in a relatively flat valley between the confining bluffs at edges.
….As I have mentioned in previous photos, when looking for streams or rivers in drylands, I had not yet learned “how to look for” a continuing line of trees in these otherwise dry grassy areas. ….So it was, that I came home with NO 2002 photos of Rock Creek prior to Red Lodge, MT.
….Thus in 2006, I was wise to the problem, and was looking even more closely! However (as mentioned in previous photos), I STILL missed all of my 3 chances to find & Photograph Rock Creek, for example where US-212, actually crosses this stream … So, when traveling along US-212, I saw a sign saying => "Montana Department of Wildlife Fishing Access ", I stomped on the brakes hard and stopped here, off the highway.

…. Looking Southeast: It Is Hard To See It, But The Stream Is Flowing To The Left, and Then Curls Around, In The Distance, To Flow To The Right.
…….From Here Rock Creek’s Flow Direction Is NorthNorthEast, Towards Roberts, MT and Joliet, MT, and Then Will Flow into the Yellowstone River Just East Of Laurel, MT.

THE FOLLOWING DUPLICATES PREVIOUS PHOTO CAPTION. =>
….[ “We are following a creek to its source. It contains water that was probably snow less than an hour ago.“]

….The ZMM Narrator’s “following a creek to its source“, as is shown above is a ‘Master Motif', as is discussed in “The Guidebook To ZMM” The ‘Master Motif' itea will be discussed in Forthcoming Photos.

About 9.2 miles prior to Red Lodge, MT. Along US-212, halfway between Roberts, MT, & Fox MT , which are approximately 7 miles apart. Here I discovered that Montana Wildlife Department had constructed a large parking lot and stream side camping sites.
….We learned from a fishing guide Website, that this is something that Montana has done at some 80 different public sites in order to bring in fishing tourist. From this we learn how to find ~90 good, natural environment, moderate $ cost, camp sites, all over Montana!

This Line Of Trees Signifies the Presence of Rock Creek Several Miles Further South of The Location of The Previous Three Photos.

….[“We are following a creek to its source. It contains water that was probably snow less than an hour ago.“]
….As Mentioned in a Previous Photo => The ZMM Narrator’s “following a creek to its source“ is a ‘Master Motif’

About ~7.2 miles to Red Lodge, MT.

The Narrator Repeatedly Mentioned “Following a Creek To Its Source.”: But Where Is The Stream?
….The previous photo mentions my non perceiving of where streams and rivers were in dry lands such as Montana, and that I needed to “learn how to look for” lines of trees to see where the ZMM Narrator’s stream is.
….Here I finally realized that => The /\ Above /\ Photo AND My Several Other Photos Saying => “A Line Of Trees Signifies the Presence of Water From A Stream Or Canal” are together, good examples of what to look for.
….And now that I’m at home, I HAVE FINALLY learned this lesson, and in my saved photos can now easily pick out => The more or less continuing lines of trees along the road that indicate Rock Creek. And as well, I now also easily discern the presence of a continuing low bluff on both sides of the highway and o/c Rock Creek.
…. These two features ALSO can be seen in my several panorama shots from along this US-212 road to Red Lodge, MT. . … Please send Email => If you want me to hurry up and Post These Panoramas in ZMMQ Panorama Photo Gallery.

The High, Dark Absaroka Range Looms Directly Ahead.
…. The Same Location As Previous Photo:On US-212, Looking SSW Towards Red Lodge, MT.

….From Here We Again See The Grey Outline of the Mountain Range, Which Is Beyond The Town Itself. ….

….“ This is a road Phædrus used all the time, and flashes of his memory coincide everywhere. The high, dark Absaroka Range looms directly ahead.
….

About ~7.2 miles prior to Red Lodge, MT. As you are traveling toward Red Lodge, be sure to remember the ZMM Restaurant called The Red Lodge Café. They are pretty busy, so be sure to get there early for Noon or Evening Good Food.
....Forthcoming Photos will show how to find it, and what’s there!

…. “Everything is so intense in this sunlight. Dark shadows, bright light. Dark blue sky. The sun is bright and hot when we’re in it, but when we pass under trees along the road, it’s suddenly cold.

Dark Shadows, Bright Light. .... Hot Sun .... In Shade, Suddenly Cold.
….These Above Four ZMM Phrases (And MANY Others Similar) “The Guidebook To ZMM” Calls ‘Master Motifs'. =>

….Such Phrases, On Purpose Repeated Many-A-Time, Are deployed For Emphasis. => For Example, In the Mountains Ahead => The ZMM Narrator Will Use These Four ZMM Phrases When discussing his “High Country” , Experiences & Philosophy,.
….When you see any of these ’Master Motifs’ (or any other similar), you should be thinking what this emphasis is meant to signify, and why it is emphasized.

Along US-212, Getting Close To Red Lodge, MT.

….After Laurel MT, I Started Looking For Travel Scenery Showing The Narrator’s ‘Master Motifs’ Such As => “Dark Shadows, Bright Light. Dark Blue Sky., The sun was indeed very intense and very hot, and the shade was wonderful when you could find it!
….Generally, there were no trees near the highway. Even higher in the mountains, where there are more trees, I still did not much see trees that would provide morning shade “, it’s suddenly cold. ” overhamging the main highway.
….With the exception of trees in towns, I did not discover any possibility of shade from “road-overhanging-trees” until well into the U-shaped valley of Rock Creak after Red Lodge, MT.
….Even in towns one must look hard to find parking in shade. I did find shade in Joliet, MT. Although the shade was hardly “cold“, it was a most welcomed relief for my lunch and my study-up for ZMM there.
….But otherwise I did NOT find good examples, even in the higher mountains ahead. Likewise, with the exception of trees in towns, I did not discover any possibility of shade, even from road-overhanging-trees, until I found just one place, which was well into the U-shaped valley after Red Lodge.

….NOTE: What The Narrator Says About Bright Sun And Dark Shadows, Is Mostly Contrary To My Photographs Here, And Then In The “High Country” Ahead. Compared to The ZMM Narrator’s evident experience, my mountain photos show the effect of much higher atmospheric humidity, which is due to higher moist springtime atmosphere, and unlike the Narrator’s dry summertime sky a month later.
….Hence, as you will see => many of my “High Country” photos have clouds, hazy atmosphere, with no sun, nor any shadows. Even the above photo, among the best I have for a “dark shadow”, hardly shows the Narrator's "black shadows”.
….If you know of good examples, please send an email.

Ever Since Boyd, MT, This Prominent Mountain Has Been Directly Ahead.

We play tag with a little blue Porsche along the way, passing it with a beep and being passed by it with a beep and doing this several times through fields of dark aspen and bright greens of grass and mountain shrubs. All this is remembered.

On US-212 1.6 miles before Red Lodge, MT. Just ahead, at a city park, the road curves a bit left to be the main dreg of downtown.
….EXPLANATION: The road from Laurel to Red Lodge is smooth and has many relatively long and straight sections. So the “little blue Porsche” scene could have happened here or any other straight section along this road.
