Indeed The Hurzler DOES HAVE Creaky Old Wooden Hall Floors “ Creaking All the Way

….[The washroom is] “ ….at the other end of a long corridor of the same dark wood, floorboards creaking all the way.
Hotel Hurzler, Laurel, MT. Be sure to note the series of transoms over each door to each room door, in progression< all the way down the corridor.
….Mr. Guenthner, seen in the doorway, later showed me how multi-layers of old newspapers, had been placed under the rubber runner (mat) the entire length of the corridor. This would inexpensively and effectively cushion heavy footsteps and absorb sound. He lifted a portion of this mat and carefully showed me one of the news pages. He offered me a specimen, dated ~1935, which I have in my files.
….Like many persons mentioned in ZMM as having Quality, Mr. Guenthner clearly cares about this old structure and the things he does in his life.
….Quality (capital Q) is mentioned 403 times in ZMM, quality (lower case q) 72 times.

One of Those Old Victorian Bath Tubs, But with Its “Lion Pawed” Feet Are Covered By “Modernization”!
….Hurzler Owner Mr. Howard Guenthner Wanted You To See This Architecture Feature.

And baths. In a beautiful old enameled cast-iron bathtub that crouched on lion’s paws in the middle of a marble floor, just waiting for us.
…. ((EXPLANATION: The significance of Cast-Iron Bath Tub was seen in Previous Photos re Miles City, MT, at the opening of ZMM Chapter 9. ))

Hotel Hurzler, Laurel, MT. In /\ Above /\ Photo, this single bath tub room, warmed by an old steam radiator, was the only bath tub available to the second floor guests. With towel In Hand, Ya Hadda Wait Yur Turn!!
….This Bath Room, was directly opposite the Common Washroom, which were in turn at the end of the long hallway, by the Exterior Door with Glass Window. (This was seen at far end of Hallway Previous Photo, AND will be see close up in Next Photo.).
….************** …
….I Was With Mr. Guenthner For Over An Hour. He Enthusiastically Shared Much Hurzler History, which I have incorporated into these photo captions. He agrees that the old Yellowstone Hotel does not fit the Laurel hotel descriptions in ZMM, and doesn’t know of any other probable candidates.
….Mr. Guenthner also shared with me his accomplishments, who his wife Rosemary, were active leaders, with the “Germans from Russia Heritage Society” (AHSGR), and has even had one of his (stage theater) plays, concerning his heritage, performed before the Society.
…. Click Here For More Information about this Society, at the USA National Level..
….By Googling … Obituary Howard S. Guenthner Laurel MT …. , you will find he was a very interesting person, with ownership of farms & properties, and a Graduate Engineer from Montana State University. (As of this writing, the Billings Gazette, has his Obituary, but you may have to subscribe? )

On the Second Floor, The Bath Room, Was Directly Opposite The Common Washroom
….Which In Turn Were At The End Of The Long Hallway, By The Exterior Door With Glass Window. =>
….This Exterior Door Opens Onto " A Porch Out In Back,"

…. “ Through the window beyond the mirror I see there is a porch out in back, ….

Hotel Hurzler, Laurel MT Since the Hurzler’s “back porch” is mounted to the same wall as the second floor washroom sinks, “ beyond the mirror … I see a porch”, might mean straight through the mirror and the wall it is mounted on. …
….More realistically, it might mean, to the left of, and “ beyond the mirror ” and then out the window of the rear hall door, as seen in /\ Above /\ Photo. (See also 2nd previous photo.)
….Mr. Guenthner explained the reason for the Hurzler’s simple utilitarian construction style and the reason for the shared washrooms,…. Constructed in 1920 by a railroad engineer, Carl Hurzler, and operated by his wife, Jessie, this hotel was designed to be a “sleeping facility” for long distance railroad crews. The rooms were rented in 8 hr “shifts” around the clock not unlike a factory!! The Spartan Utilitarian Construction Style, was quite sufficient for a railroad crew worker, who only just need a good sleep!
….Back in1968 when Robert Pirsig, Chris & The Sutherlands came through, fancier, more expensive, hotels/motels would have long ago modernized to private bathrooms.

These Trees Do Respond to the Wind Around This Exterior Second Level “Porch”.

Hotel Hurzler, Laurel, MT. When I first approached the Hurzler and saw this “porch,” really a fire escape, I knew right away =>”This MUST be the ZMM Hotel in Laure” l!
….All the doors were locked, so my next problem was how to get a chance to see and photograph the interior to confirm the ZMM evidence. Neighbors told me that the owner, Howard Guenthner might appear at any time because he tended his nearby garden. I did not have to wait very long for Mr. Guenthner to appear. After explaining my research, he readily agreed to help.

Hotel Hurzler, Pennsylvania Avenue at First Street, Laurel MT Since the time the Hurzler was closed, the lobby has been used for storage, and to keep Mr. Guenthner’s garden plants from frost, as seen in this photo.
….All the trees and cool green grass around the Hurzler are compliments of irrigation. An old irrigation ditch may be seen further East on 1st Street.

…Back in 2002, my own Henry Gurr’s early morning was spent at the Laurel Public Library researching for 1968 Laurel hotels that would have had a common washroom, and/or a back porch with trees..
….Ms. Mary Schrader and Ms. Peggy Arnold were very helpful with my quest, when I showed them the Laurel MT passages from ZMM. Ms. Arnold said one possibility could have been the “Yellowstone Hotel. However it “did not look to the East and did not have a second level porch”.
….A far better possibility was the “Hewetzer” [Her pronunciation.]. Also spelled “Hurzeler”. She supplied me with a Xeroxed page titled “History of the Hurzler Hotel” from book “Laurel City History”. As I was leaving, she directed me 4 blocks “straight down 1st Street to Pennsylvania Avenue”.

The Tallest Brick Building To Right, Is Former Yellowstone Hotel. Mentioned Previous Photos & Below.
….Off Screen To The Left, Is The Burlington Northern Railroad, With A Giant Switch Yard,
….This Railroad Through The Years, Has Been Large Enough To Major Support Adjacent Owl Café … Subject Of Next Photo.

…“ We are in love with everything this morning and talk about good things all the way down a sunlit morning street to a restaurant.

~400 E. Main Street by Railroad Yard, At Pennsylvania Avenue, Laurel, MT.
The /\ Above /\ Photo shows what ZMM Narrator, Chris and Sylvia, would see as they turned from the Hurzler’s Street (Pennsylvania Ave), and started walking West on Main Street.
….A giant Railroad Switch yard (3rd next photo), which runs parallel to Main Street, is to the immediate left in this photo.
..One block ahead at right by trees. is the Hurzler’s nearest restaurant and the only 1968 Laurel restaurant close enough for walking rather than crank up the machines and riding. From the Hurzler it is one shady sunlit block South to Main Street and just over one block West to the Restaurant. Beside it is, you guessed it, a Bar!!
….The Tall Brick Building with yellow bricked-in windows, is the Old Yellowstone Hotel, probably for the paying Railroad Passengers, rather than Railroad Employees…. On close investigation this hotel does NOT fit the clues re the ZMM Hotel in Laurel. The back (and sides) of this building did not have any evidence of having had an earlier rear second level porch. For example, I did not see at the second level; doorways, old mounting bolts, flashing, water stains, etc. Nor was there any places to have had a porch on account of a close adjacent street, close adjacent buildings, and a tight fitting alley at rear, etc.

….And to Right, The Sonny O’Day Bar

….“The eggs and hot cakes and coffee are from heaven. Sylvia and Chris talk intimately about his school and friends and personal things, ….

203 E. Main Street, Laurel, MT. Mr. Guenthner also explained the name for “Owl Café ”. He said that the railroad, which operated around the clock, needed meals for its employees at all hours straight through the night. Thus it was that the Northern Pacific RR, now the Burlington Northern, contracted with the restaurant to stay open all night, and supply good-old hi-energy-home-cookin’ & and lots of carry-out coffee in thermoses. Hence the names Owl AND Café’!
….Due to automation and modernization, Railroad Crews are smaller and the need for a “stay awake” program has diminished. I understand the Owl is no longer open all night. The Northern Pacific Railroad came thru this area in 1882 and the terminal plus switch yard was planned in 1907. The Owl Café opened in 1916.

NEW TOPIC: On My Second Trip Through Laurel, I Almost Did NOT Get My Interior Photograph Of The Owl Cafe' A Second Time.
….My son and I came here early evening and hungry. But we almost did not get in! That night they were hosting a big High School Reunion, and had a "CLOSED " sign on the door.
….But we did not notice it and barged right in. That was Good luck!! Because once in, we could plead that we had come all the way from South Carolina, just to be there.
… Former owner Linda Frickel and her son Dirk Frickel the current owner and chef, were very gracious and worked us into their very busy serving schedule.
….We experienced surprisingly excellent food!! And later learned the reason: Dirk had learned his cooking art very well at the Western Culinary Institute in Portland, OR. What Luck again!! WOW!!!

….“ …. while I listen and gaze through the large restaurant window at the storefront across the road. So different now from that lonely night in South Dakota. Beyond those buildings are mountains and snowfields. .. Sylvia says John has talked to someone in town about another route to Bozeman, south through Yellowstone Park."

203 E. Main Street, Laurel, MT. The /\ Above /\ Photo shows what the ZMM Narrator would have seen, out the front window of the Owl Café l. Beyond those buildings and a giant railroad switch yard of the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway, do lie distant mountains to the South and somewhat West. But to look in the direction of the highest mountains and Red Lodge, MT, would require looking at a considerable angle to the Southwest.
….The above ZMM Passage shows the spatial orientation ability of the Narrator, which comes from his considerable previous mountain climbing experience plus his intimate knowledge of this local area as well as the distant high mountains, in the direction of Yellowstone National Park.
….As a traveler, the Narrator would have been able to project spatially the direction of the highest mountains from a site such as the Owl Café. Author Robert Pirsig would have a similar spatial orienting ability when writing ZMM.
….Within walking distance of the Hurzler Hotel, I did not see any other Laurel restaurant that would have been a better “fit” to the clues given in ZMM.

Yup!! Here Is the Railroad Underpass Just Where the Narrator Said It Was!
….Turn South Here, To Follow US-212 ZMM Route to ZMM Town of Red Lodge, MT.

…. “We meet John again and it’s settled. Soon, beyond a railroad underpass, …..

Central Business District, Main Street, Laurel, MT. The ZMM Narrator’s “underpass“ is just a block West of the Old Owl Restaurant Location. As was the case for me in 2002, it is easy to miss the left turn South onto US-212, and turn onto the road to Red Lodge, MT.
….AND due to inattention to above ZMM Passage, I missed taking this /\ Above /\ Photo which had to wait until I returned here in 2006.

HISTORY OF RED LODGE, MONTANA: COAL MINES, RAILROAD, & THE ORIGINAL ROAD TO RED LODGE.
..A) At first Red Lodge, MT, Grew Up As A Mining Camp For Nearby Coal Mines.
I conjecture that this road from Laurel, MT (a Major Railroad Junction) to Red Lodge, MT (an eventual Coal Mining Rail Head) … was originally scouted by following Rock Creek to “The Mines”. The stream would provide water and fodder along the stream for draft animals used in the original opening this area. These Coal Mines, provided the “Motive Energy” for over 60 years of early Montana Railroad Steam Engines.
…. This “Rock Creek” emerges as very important to the ZMM Narrator, as you will see in Forthcoming Photos, where we are repeatedly told => “Following a creek to its source.”:
….The original road (now US-212), “To The Mines”, “Following a creek to its source.”, was aimed directly at the mountains behind Red Lodge, MT.
..B) Red Lodge: A Coal Town On Rock Creek, Which Is A Branch of The Clark’s Fork River. Posted on September 19, 2015 ((Concerning The original road, which is now US-212. ))
….When the Northern Pacific Railroad entered the Yellowstone Valley in the 1880s, officials and investors immediately began the search to find and acquire locally available deposits of coal [to fuel their Railroad Steam Locomotives]. First there came the Klein mines north of Billings and then by the end of the decade, the first [next] move toward mines to the south, in the Clark’s Fork Valley, at what would become Carbon County with its major town of Red Lodge.
….Development began slowly, with the Depression of 1893 intervening, but as the era’s financial and railroad magnates combined the Great Northern, the Burlington Route, and the Northern Pacific into one huge co-operative venture, they selected a new place in the Yellowstone Valley, a town called Laurel at the confluence of the Clark’s Fork and Yellowstone rivers, to connect the three railroads. In short order, a Northern Pacific Railroad spur line was built down the Clark’s Fork to the place called Red Lodge. U.S. Highway 212 follows this route, and the boom was on.
… Entering Red Lodge from the north via US-212 you encounter immediately the town’s roots as a railroad town, as the historic Northern Pacific Depot [Building] remains rooted at the head of the town. Here is where my [Carroll VanWest] long-interest with the Red Lodge story began in 1984, when I met with a small group of local historians, preservationists, and civic leaders determined to keep Red Lodge and its still intact historic environment together. The group’s vision for the depot was for it to be a visitor center, an arts center, but more than anything a community center, a visible sign of the turnaround that could happen. Already, at the head of town [town entrance], artist Peter Toth had begun the new tradition with his mammoth [Native American People] wood sculpture, “In Honor of a Proud and Noble People,” [ installed in 1979, a theme of the region .. ] This Article by Carroll VanWest.Click Here.

Indeed The ZMM Narrator’s Discussion Of Philosophy Supports The Actual Road Travel & Conversely !!
…. MY RESEARCH NOTES SAY: => “Now I see again, how much the reading of ZMM’s Travel Narrative supports, reflects upon, and amplifies, by analogy, ZMM’s twisting heavy readings in philosophy, and conversely.” (NOTE: Here I said “by analogy”, but in retrospect I should have said “by metaphor, or even better “by Metaphoric Bridge Connection.)
.
…. Here in my notes I drew a wiggly, twisty line, to illustrate the twists of the highway seen already, and I anticipated at mountain switch-backs ahead.
….This phrase “LOOMS DIRECTLY AHEAD“, the Narrator uses repeatedly, and thus is a Master Motif. So also are “STREAM” and “TRAVELING TOWARDS THEIR SOURCE”. These Motifs will be discussed in the Next Two Photos, and the “stream” will be seen in Third Photo Next.
….As I drove the ZMM Route day-after-day, many, many of the Narrator’s Various Master Motifs surfaced in mind, triggered by the passing landscape.
As Will Be Further Discussed In Forthcoming Photos. =>
….These Above 3 Italic Phrases are written into ZMM, and Used Many A Time, as Repeated Themes, for Special Emphasis. “The Guidebook to ZMM” , Calls such Emphasized & Often Repeated ZMM Phrases, ‘Master Motifs'.

“THE BEARTOOTH HIGHWAY:”
…A VERY GOOD ~20 MINUTE NATIONAL FOREST SERVICE VIDEO,
……GIVES A COMPLETE OVERVIEW INTRODUCTION,
WITH GREAT PHOTOS TO ILLUSTRATE ALL TOPICS, SUCH AS =>
…. What The Traveler Will See Along The Highway, The Geological Formation Of These Mountains, Plus History Of Human Exploration & Development From The Very Beginning Of Europeans Coming To These Mountains.

….SYNOPSIS => ”The Beartooth Highway runs 69-miles, from the Red Lodge to Cooke City, Montana and then to the Northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It's a road so spectacular the CBS's Charles Kuralt has called it America's "most beautiful roadway". The video illustrates the highway's use by the traveler, exploring recreational opportunities along the way, as well as providing glimpses of the vast and varied scenery.”

NOTE: Many Of This Video’s Scenes Are Over ~10,000 feet elevation. And for these, look close at the top of the picture to partly see examples of =>

Shade Trees Along The highway: Looking SSW Along US-212 Towards Red Lodge, MT.
…..Stopping Here Because A Sign “Fishing Access”, Leads To Investigating /\ Above /\ Photo Scene. =>
……..The Narrator Repeatedly Mentioned “Following a Creek To Its Source.”: But Where Is The Stream?

….We are following a creek to its source. It contains water that was probably snow less than an hour ago. The stream and the road pass through green and stony fields each a little higher than before. Everything is so intense in this sunlight. Dark shadows, bright light. Dark blue sky. The sun is bright and hot when we’re in it, but when we pass under trees along the road, it’s suddenly cold.

… The /\ Above /\ Photo is along US-212, .5.0 Miles WestSouthWest from Joliet, MT, with another 9.2 miles to Red Lodge, MT. All the time I drove SSW on US-212 from Laurel, MT (June 2002), I was mindful of the above ZMM Passage, and kept looking for “ a creek ”, but mostly couldn’t find it! ….You’ll have to understand that => I’m from ~wet-lands Ohio with plentiful rain and trees everywhere. So only after many missed photo opportunities, did I slowly & eventually “did I learn* & “get into my bones” that => In the dry arid lands such as Montana, ANY concentration of trees (as in the /\ Above /\ Photo), MEANS water of a stream, a canal, or river, practically.!!
….Traveling Southwest From Laurel, MT Along Us-212, The ZMM Traveler, Looking Carefully, Will See Rock Creek => Is East. of highway, and then, just 1.5 mile Southwest of Joliet, MT, ( at an easy to miss bridge), crosses to the North, and then the Northwest side of the highway..
….Continued traveling Southwest along US-212, the ZMM Traveler, looking carefully, now will see Rock Creek is Northwest of highway: And then 6.4 Southwest of Boyd, MT= WayPt = 124.(at an easy to miss bridge), crosses to the Southeast side
….These two “creek-crossings” somehow, escaped my attention: Was this because Rock Creek has already been greatly depleted by the numerous irrigation canals, or too much obscured by trees?
….Thus, at two places (after Joliet, MT & after Boyd, MT, I actually crossed over Rock Creek, but failed to recognize “That’s what I was looking for”! Thus I twice missed my “Photo Op”!!

….I was hardly any better on my trip Sept 2006. I again missed BOTH of these “crossings”, and got another ~5 miles all the way to /\ Above /\ Photo location, until I first found a place to get photos of Rock Creek!
….SIDE NOTE: In /\ Above /\ Photo, looking SSW towards Red Lodge, MT, Rock Creek is to the left, which is East of the highway, and remains so until (another easy to miss), “crossing”, 5.2 miles SW of Red lodge, MT.
….As the ZMM Narrator says => “The facts are there but you don’t see them. You’re looking right at them, but they don’t yet have enough value.

….In The Photo /\ Above /\ Photo, The Line Of Trees On Both Sides Of The Road, Mark An Irrigation Canal. This Canal, “Finn Ditch”, Gets Its Water From Rock Creek, which here is on the left (East) of the road. Here Rock Creek is located in a similar line of trees, as will be seen in the Next Photo. More examples will be in Four Forthcoming Photos.
….SUMMARY => In this dry climate, trees would pretty much NOT be here, as is shown in /\ Above /\ Photo, without a stream, a canal, or sponsorship of humans. The ZMM Traveler needs to “learn how to look”, and see where the water is, as discerned from “a concentration of trees”, from here, all the way on into Red Lodge, MT.

How To See A Satellite View **AND** A TopoZone Map of My /\ Above /\ 2006 Photo Location At WayPt = 124. This WayPt Is About Halfway Between Roberts, MT, and Fox, MT, which are about 7 miles apart.
….A) To find & study a Satellite View RIGHT CLICK AND SELECT “NEW TAB” => After Satellite Map View Comes Up, You will See (again the previously displayed => SATELLITE VIEW OF SOUTH CENTRAL MONTANA, which had => ) ZMM Route along US-212, SW of Laurel, MT, on way to Red Lodge, MT. The Red Pinpoint marks my Photo WayPt = 124. => ClickOn The Plus&Minus To Zoom. You can “Click&Drag” Map In Any Direction, to See More Off Your Screen Edges.
….B) To find & study a TopoZone Map Of Same Area As Above-Mentioned Satellite View => …. => RIGHT CLICK AND SELECT “NEW TAB” => After Map View Comes Up, You Will See an AWFUL Clutter of Adverts That Are Impossible To Eliminate => YOU BEST SHOULD =>
….Use Scroll Bar At Far Right => Adjust Green Topo Map Until You See JUST BELOW The Plus&Minus Upper Left. => A ClickOn For “Full Screen”. Click On It, and Adverts Will Be GONE. =>

….Then use Plus&Minus To Zoom. You can “Click&Drag” Map In Any Direction, to See More Off Your Screen Edges..….Topozone map shows US-212 stays quite near Rock Creek, a snowmelt stream, all the way from Laurel to the snowfields. In fact, you will see on the map that the highway stays in the valley "flood plain" between the fairly high bluffs. This map shows Rock Creek is East of the highway within 0.4 miles from the creek-crossing (South of Roberts, MT.) all the way thru Red Lodge, and well into the mountain canyon, where it again changes sides.
….Click the + to Zoom-In, and you will see, center of screen, along US-212 => Halfway between Roberts, MT & Fox, MT, The Finn Ditch irrigation Canal, AND the dotted side-road, which is the Parking Lot For “Water Birch, Montana State Fishing Access & Camping Site”. This is Topic of Next 3 Photos.
