About 10 miles after I crossed the border, from Missouri into Iowa, at a crossroad, I saw a small sign saying Campground down a gravel road East: I flagged down several cars traveling by, and they assured me that yes this was still there, about 8 miles East, and it would be worth going there, and asking if I could set up my tent for the night.

I was up early next morning, drove back to above mentioned crossroad intersection, turned North, and on my way to Grinnell College, passing through Bloomfield IA after about 20 min, on more dusty gravel roads.

Mears Cottage at Grinell College, 1213 6th Avenue Grinnell, IA 50112. This photograph is a panorama made up of a series of 8 photos of the Grinnell College campus from a centralized location between the college Library and Mears Cottage—the dormitory where Sarah lived for her first and possibly second year at Grinnell.

This panorama shows the entire area around the camera. The included 8 photos form a 360-degree view from the center of the Grinnell Campus, with the first photo copied to the end to let you know you have returned to the start. The careful observer can find train tracks beginning at the 5th photograph in the panorama, as well as many more details to notice! To get a larger view of this, be sure to click the photo a few times to enlarge it to its largest size, though this photo is large enough you may have to wait a moment for it to fully load, and may need to zoom out to see the top and bottom at once.

From this central location, we get a good view of the railroad tracks that run through the center of Grinnell College, not far from Mears Cottage.

This photograph faces directly North, and is a continued view through the middle of the Grinnell Campus, again you can see the railroad in the upper left of the photo. These tracks are about 200 feet away from Mears Cottage, and run directly through the otherwise tranquil campus. Sarah has been noted to complain about the trains keeping her awake at night in a 1912 Grinnell College yearbook.

Pictured is the left portion of Mears Cottage, the women’s living quarters and Sarah’s dormitory during her time at Grinnell. Mears Cottage could suitably house ~100 students. (View of Mears Cottage is continued in photos 33.)

Pictured is a continuation of Mears Cottage. As we learn from a 1911 report in Scarlet and Black, the Grinnell College newspaper, Mears Cottage was commonly known as the “Shack” and its recurring residents “Old Girls” by Grinnell students and faculty. (View of Mears Cottage is continued in photo 34.)
Notice the sign in front of the building, which reads “1213 Sixth Avenue; Mears Cottage.” No mistaking we have the right place!

According to the Grinnell Campus directory found in the Grinnell Archives, this is where Sarah roomed during her last ~2 years at Grinnell College. This was after leaving Mears Cottage, where she lived previously. As you will see in photo 40, this residence was not far at all from her previous dormitory! The next photo shows the same house with a view from down the street of Grinnell Campus.

This picture is from the perspective of Sarah’s house on the left (Photo DSC_38): We are standing in front of her house and looking back at the Grinnell College Campus parking lot (the same parking lot from which the previous panorama shots of Mears Cottage and Grinnell Campus were taken). This view is similar to the one Sarah would have seen each morning before making her way to Grinnell College. Most likely, the paved streets would have been dirt or gravel and most certainly the curbs and nice sidewalks would not be present. However, the surrounding trees, grass and Grinnell College buildings would have looked very similar.
If you look to the right in the background of the photo (be sure to click the photo to get the largest view), you can see the red brick of Mears Cottage, and to the left of the building, you see the same parking lot out front. You can further imagine the Library off to the left through the trees. If I had known how close Sarah’s personal house was from Mears Cottage, I certainly would have walked instead of driven! What a convenient commute to the Grinnell Campus Sarah must have had!

Pictured here is Professor MS Slaughter, presumably in his office at Grinnell College.
Notice how this photograph appears to be a more candid shot of Slaughter. His hand appears to be moving and he is not posing for the camera (perhaps the photo was staged this way). Notice also the classical bust (not sure of whom) atop his bookshelf to the left of the photograph. Such seems appropriate for a man dedicated to the Greek and Roman Classics.

Here pictured is a photograph of Moses Stephen (MS) Slaughter when he was a professor at Grinnell College.
Professor MS Slaughter would later become Sarah’s thesis advisor at the University of Madison.
Many thanks to Chris Jones, archivist at the Grinnell Archives housed in the Grinnell College Library. We thank Chris for not only his great help with finding this information, but also for granting us permission to use and share the information here!

This Typewriter Document Was Originally Composed By Charles Noble: It Is ~A Memoir, About The Earliest Days, Or Iowa College, The First Name of the college where Sarah Vinke Went to Undergraduate School, Lived For Four Years, and From Which Sarah Received her Bachelor's Degree, With Major in Latin and English, from in 1914.

Based on the evident facts, that both George A. Gates & Charles Noble, were in early career (~age 30), and Iowa College (Renamed Grinnell College), was formed in 1846, we can surmise that the original composition of this “Memoir”, was hand written about 1870’s. This being before the days of typewriters with Courier Font (~1930 to 1960), the Document Picture above, must have been typed, in this range of years.

This is a scan of a document provided by Chris Jones during my research visit to Grinnell College.
