This picture is from the perspective of Sarah’s house on the left (Photo DSC_38): We are standing in front of her house and looking back at the Grinnell College Campus parking lot (the same parking lot from which the previous panorama shots of Mears Cottage and Grinnell Campus were taken). This view is similar to the one Sarah would have seen each morning before making her way to Grinnell College. Most likely, the paved streets would have been dirt or gravel and most certainly the curbs and nice sidewalks would not be present. However, the surrounding trees, grass and Grinnell College buildings would have looked very similar.
If you look to the right in the background of the photo (be sure to click the photo to get the largest view), you can see the red brick of Mears Cottage, and to the left of the building, you see the same parking lot out front. You can further imagine the Library off to the left through the trees. If I had known how close Sarah’s personal house was from Mears Cottage, I certainly would have walked instead of driven! What a convenient commute to the Grinnell Campus Sarah must have had!
