Pictured here is an image from the 1914 Grinnell College Yearbook “Cyclone”
Notice that beside the number 9 we see our Sarah!
Make sure to click the photo to get largest view! Beside her picture we see her name: Sarah Jennings and hometown: Dallas Center, Iowa. Also listed is her area of study English—Latin. The text goes on to share the various organizations and activities Sarah took part in. The YWCA being the Young Women’s Christian Origination (similar to the YMCA, being the young men’s version). The text also indicates that she was a member of the Calcogathian Society of Grinnell College, indicated by a google search, to be a society striving for harmony of the mind, body, and spirit. (Googling the word Calcogathia or Kalkogathia yields interesting insight. Some definitions include the word “quality”!) Sarah was also, apparently involved at some time in class basketball and hockey.

A wide view of the Grinnell Campus in the early days. We need to find the correct date, but it must be approximately 1940, judging from the rather modern looking building center right.

Pictured here is a page from the 1913 Grinnell “Cyclone” Yearbook. The poem is titled “The Shack Bunch”—“The Shack” being Grinnell College’s nickname for the women’s living quarters i.e. Mears Cottage.
This is where Sarah lived during her first and perhaps second year at Grinnell College, and can be seen previously in the album. The poem briefly, affectionately, and a bit humorously describes the women living in Mears Cottage. Notice that at the beginning of the poem’s fourth stanza, we see mention of our Sarah (Sarah J.)!
Be sure to click to enlarge the photograph. Sarah’s line reads: “Sarah J.’s dandy; Always makin’ candy; Or hangin’ on her balcony rail.”

This Is A Scan Of The Inside Leaf Of “Dust Cover”, from A Grinnell College Centennial Celebration Book => Grinnell College in the Nineteenth Century, by Professor Joseph Frazier Wall
…NOTE: For Ez Reading, and as for all ZMMQGallery Photos => Click on any photo several times to get the largest view:
When Grinnell Archivist Chris Jones, showed me this ~2.5 x 9 inch slip of paper, I (Henry S Gurr), asked him to send me a scan, because it was a good & compact history of Grinnell. … ONLY much later => After I Googled for more information about who was Prof Wall, did I realize this was a whole history book! ANd one of the Google Results lead to Amizon.com which had a photo of the cover of this book, shown in next photo, along with a much longer, good & compact history of Grinnell (also next photo), only part of which appears in image above..
ATTENTION: As is strongly stated by Charles Noble, in previous photo, Iowa Collage ( later named Grinnell College), from its earliest days ”Was a story about organized religion and religious values!” … You will see this statement In a) above photo, and b) the next phot (with other similarstatements: AND c) There is absolutely no doubt this was a major continuing characteristic (perhaps dominating), that continued at Grinnell College to well after our Sarah was at school there!!
…Just how our Sarah was immersed in this (Protestant Christianity), “religious environment”, is fully covered in our . Sarah Vinke Biography.

Grinnell College in the Nineteenth Century: From Salvation to Service 1st Edition (1997)
by Joseph Frazier Wall (Author)
In this most engaging history of one of America's premier liberal arts colleges, Professor Wall captures far more than the formation and growth of Grinnell College, Iowa. It is also a story about organized religion and religious values in nineteenth-century America, about westward expansion across the Mississippi River, and about town building on the prairies. Strong personalities drive the early college: Leonard and Sarah Parker, George F. Magoun, George Herron, Carrie Rand, Martha Foote Crowe, and above all, George Augustus Gates. Wall's quotations from personal letters and college minutes illuminate their backgrounds, motivations, and aspirations. The book was originally commissioned by President George Drake as a sesquicentennial history of the college. This volume contains the story Wall had completed when he died. Mrs Bea Wall finished her husband's last chapter.
This Is Brief History of Grinnell College, From It’s Very Difficult Earliest Days: This quick reader’s summary is what happens to have been placed just inside the dust jacket of Joseph Frazier Wall’s a Sesquicentennial History of Grinnell College, also mentioned in the previous photo.
NOTE: You may need a magnifying glass to read the small letters. OR on your computer's keyboard, hold down the CTRL key at left, while several times press the += key upper right. For most anything on your computer, this is a general procedure to increase magnification of what you are looking at.

~8:00pm May 17 Sunset At I-80 Rest Area, Half Way From Grinnell College To Des Moines's Walnut Creek State Park Campground, ~10 Miles South of Des Moines IA.
When Henry Gurr stopped at this I-80 Rest Area, he saw Super Long Transport Rigs that were moving Components of a HUGE New Electrical Power Windmill!! Henry never had been so close, and was quite impressed by these “REAL “DON QUIXOTE” GIANTS! On automatic Henry’s Nicon D50 came out, and snap-snap-snap. … Then after food & rest, and seeing this above Sunset Scene, Henry remembered his standard (ZMM Route Research Trip Photo Practice & Habit), took one more snap-it!
SUMMARY Of Henry Gurr's Research At the Grinnell College Library & Archives, for two days. ... My email at the time said: “All goes well, and finding lots of good new info: Nothing tremendous, but worth doing it.” High points were: Found (and Photographed) where she lived there, and a small photo of her in the Yearbook. And surprisingly, considerable and important information about Dr M S Slaughter, Sarah’s U. Wisconsin Graduate School, Major Professor, who happened in his early teaching career, to be also at Grinnell in his early teaching career.: I found a whole lot more about him, including his PhD Thesis, and some very good photos. 16 May late afternoon & evening: Archive closed at 5 pm, so I continued my Sarah Vinke Biography Field Research, upstairs, in the Library of Grinnell College., Evening find campground reco’d by Archives Dr Christopher Jones, ~ in a very nice Iowa State Park, ~10 mile NW of Grinnell Campus. 17 May, continue in Archives, and pretty much a repeat of previous day. Since there was plenty of day left, I drove I-80 West toward Des Moines IA.
