Saturday, July 20, 2024: … Continued Driving The NEWER US-95, 2 Minutes Later, We Stop In A Second Big Rest Area Parking Lot, To Take In The Fantastic View.

…QUESTION: Why …. As You Scroll Thru This Panorama
….Why Does It Look So Peculiar Crazy?
….ANSWERE:

…In order to keep Newer US-95 relatively straight, a large roadway cut was made in the mountainside, and left a relatively large flat area opposite, This large area is seen in Mid Panorama: But it looks so crazy because the mountain is so high, and tie parking lot so wide, forming a large somewhat triangle shape, all the way to the Camera Location, between those two big rocks.

NOTE:
…At The Far Right End Of The Above Panorama, You Are Looking ~East, And In The Distance You See Iconic Deep Grooves Cut In The Mountain.

Saturday, July 20, 2024: … Continued From Previous Photo => We Go Into A Historical Marker Turnout => Here, Despite The Tree Leaves Covering The Idaho Historical Marker 327, We Can See It Tells About The Newer US-95 We Have Been Traveling, For The Last Several Miles, and About The Older US-95, Called “White Bird Grade”. We Stop To Study All This In, AND =>
…Then, As Seen /\Above/\, Further To The Right, We ALSO Take In, The Adjacent Covered Kiosk Shelter With Three National Park Service Information Displays About => “White Bird Battlefield” And “The Nez Perce National Historical Park”, Which Will Be Shown & Discussed In The NEXT FOUR Photos.

Along The Newer US-95, About 10.4 Miles SouthWest of Grangeville, ID.

As Partly Seen In Above Photo => The Text Of Idaho Historical Marker 327 Says =>

… “For 60 years after construction was completed in 1915, White Bird Grade (Seen From Here, Across the Valley) served Idaho’s only north-south highway.”
“Many tortuous curves and switchbacks -which, if placed together, made 37 complete circles - let the old road climb 2900 feet in 14 miles. Gaining an elevation of 4429 at its summit, that route represented a significant engineering and construction achievement. This new grade did not replace it until 1975.”
Click Here For More Information & Photos Concerning This Historical Marker.

Wikipedia Has A Good Photo & Map. And Says => “The White Bird Grade Click Here. is a historic mountain highway along a former section of U.S. Route 95 near White Bird, Idaho, United States. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as an engineering accomplishment, a "marvel" which was an achievement of the early good roads movement.
…This highway in Idaho County was built 104 years ago in 1920 and upgraded through 1938. Its 1974 NRHP nomination asserts that it "will be remembered as one of the marvels of highway engineering, built when cars did not travel much more than 25 miles per hour (40 km/h)." At the time, a more modern highway was being built through the area.[2] and it opened in June 1975.”
…“The contract for the original road, 22 miles (35 km) from the mouth of White Bird Creek at the Salmon River to Grangeville, was awarded in late 1918.[8] Completed in 1921 and first paved in 1938, it rose slightly higher to 4,429 feet (1,350 m), due to the absence of a summit cut. Located to the east, the old road was twice the length and had a multitude of switchbacks ascending a treeless slope.>
.“Farmers kept water troughs at a few of the precarious switchbacks for their livestock and folks who frequently traveled the road knew their exact locations, as they were a welcome stop for over-heated cars. Some log trucks would exit the new N US-95 in White Bird and take the old narrow, switchback riddled US 95 since the grade was spread out over about 4 extra miles making it much easier on those trucks hauling heavy loads over the grade. There is an annual charity "Just For the Hill of It" bike challenge up the old White Bird Grade.”

Looking Back (North), At The Road We Have Just Come Down.
…Just Right Of Center, The Whole Distant Mountain Sides Are One of the Many Nez Perce National Historical Parks.
…Looking Closely, You See After The Foreground, What Looks Like A Minor Dip In The Highway. Although Not Evident, At The “Dip”, The Highway Goes Over Very High Expensive Bridge, Over The Huge Canyon Of White Bird Creek! Also the Older US-95 (which was traveled by Robert Pirsig in 1968), goes West under this bridge, as it follows White Bird Creek, to where fit lows into the Salmon River.
…A Dramatic View This Will Seen In THIRD NEXT Photo.

….“I look back over my shoulder and see antlike cars way back at the top.” (Cont. Next)

One mile South of White Bird, ID. When I was here, I looked in vain for roads that would lead to the locations of The Narrator’s 1968 “ … I see our road will go down and down through what must be a hundred hairpin turns …. “.
….But with a printed topo map in hand, it should be easy for anyone to find, the needed road(s to do this.

…The 2nd next photo will additionally discuss the Narrator’s Road to White Bird Hill using the old twisty hairpin curved road.
..****************..

To see both the Narrator’s old twisty hairpin curved Gravel Road and The Newer Highway, US-95, on a Topographic (Topo) Map, Click Here => RIGHT CLICK AND SELECT “NEW TAB” => AFTER Map View Comes Up, You Will See a Clutter of Adverts That Are Impossible To Eliminate => YOU BEST SHOULD => .
….Use Scroll Bar At Far Right => Adjust Green Topo Map Until You See JUST BELOW The Plus&Minus At Upper Left => A ClickOn For “Full Screen”. Click On It, And Adverts Will Be GONE. => >
….Then use Plus&Minus To Zoom. You can “Click&Drag” Map In Any Direction, To See More Off Your Screen Edges.
..****************..
Once The Above Blue Link Is Up, And Clicked For Full Screen, You Should Be Able To See =>
…A) At Far Left the Blue “Salmon River” along which further South, The ZMM Route, on US-95 will follow.
…B) At center, The Nez Perce National Historical Park, surrounded by a Bold Red-Brown Border.
…C) A bit left of the Bold Red-Brown Border, the Narrow Dark Line is the Newer Highway, US-95.
…D) Just Right of the Upper Part of the Border, you will see Narrow Double Line of the older US-95, which is the Narrator’s 1968 road => “ … I see our road will go down and down through what must be a hundred hairpin turns ….
…E) Close study of either end of the Narrow Double Line, should reveal how to find, the “connecting road(s)”, needed to actually access & travel the Narrator’s old twisty hairpin curved road.

From An Access Sideroad Beside The Newer US-95, A View Back (North), Towards The ZMM Narrator’s “ Narrow Thread Of Green Surrounding The Town Of White Bird. …
…And Just Right Of Center, On The Distant Mountainside, Is Located The Nez Perce National Historical Park.
…Stating At Left Edge Of Photo, You Can Discern The Road Cut of The Newer US-95 Highway, Which Continues To The Right, In The Dark Band Along The Distant Mountainside, Continuing To A Bit Right Of Center.
…And Continuing Beyond “A Bit Right Of Center”, but, Not Discernible On Distant Mountainside, Must Be Located =>.
…The ZMM Narrator’s “ … I See Our Road Will Go Down And Down Through What Must Be A Hundred Hairpin Turns …. “ .

….(Start Chapter 25) “This morning a solution to the problem of stuckness was discussed, the classic badness caused by traditional reason. Now it’s time to move to its romantic parallel, the ugliness of the technology traditional reason has produced.
.... The road has twisted and rolled over desert hills into a little, narrow thread of green surrounding the town of White Bird, …
” (Cont. Next)

One mile South of White Bird, ID.

…In the /\ Above /\ Photo => The newer highway down White Bird Hill, is visible as the trace coming down the mountainside at left. As you can see, it comes down a long, steady, straight grade and remains at a much, much, higher elevation than the town as it by-passes to the West. The next photo shows how this was done.
….According to TopoZone.com, the Narrator’s rough & tough road, with some 21 switchbacks, descends much more steeply down the relatively broad and smooth hill seen above the green beyond the town. Although the old road is barely discernable in this photo, the slightly red-color may be the exposed red soil at the road cuts. This old road finally reaches a creek canyon bottom at the upper right of the trees, and then follows White Bird Creek through the town.
…This road and the stream proceed, side by side, to the low area in the foreground, and then off the photo to the left. The road and creek proceed Southwest (left), at nearly the same elevation, an additional mile to the Salmon River. All this fits the Narrator’s passages above.
…At this location, my unaware ego precipitated “Low Quality“! … I did NOT drive into White Bird town, along this access road in /\ Above /\ Photo, because I was “in a hurry“ to reach “BROWNLEE CAMPGROUND“ before dark.
….In retrospect, I see that my anxiety and fatigue at that time, lead to this hasty, faulty, low Quality decision, causing me to miss many Excellent ZMM Route Research & Photo Opportunities!
…During this time, I ALSO failed to realize that both of my camera batteries were nearly dead. So when I got to the Brownlee Campground, I found that I had gone 15 miles past my last source of electrical power with no promise of any for 25 miles ahead!: Thus, the next day, dead batteries resulted in many more photo opportunities missed.
...Also, from the advantage of hindsight => I can now see that I was low on gumption!! And I can now see => How simple it would have been just to go into town and ask where the ZMM Narrator’s rough & tough older US-95 road was! Obviously, this old road was in the town itself!
…Moreover => I had not proceeded “without desire“. Better maps would have helped. But all this sad story holds Important Object Lessons! :-((
….Months later, finally realizing where the Narrator’s 1968 road is, and where the best ZMM passage photos would have been, I chide myself for not following my hunch and taking the road (in the /\ Above /\ Photo at right), into town and get dirretions, and thus get a better photos for the above ZMM Passage!
…Of course, we now have Satellite Views, and Google Street View, which currently however does NOT show any of older US-95.

White Bird Creek Has, By Eons Of Erosion, Literally Cut Thru The Closer Black Volcanic Rock Mountains, As It Flowed To Join The Salmon River & Canyon, Further Southwest.
…In 1968, Robert Pirsig & Chris Likely Followed Older US-95, Which With White Bird Creek, Is At Bottom Of The Canyon (Below Level Of View), Seen Beyond The Green Grass Foreground.
…From Here, They Traveled Further Southwest, About A Mile, Into The Even Deeper & Far Larger Salmon River Canyon, Which Is Unseen, Before The Base Of The Most Distant Mountains.

The ZMM Narrator Says =>
…“ …. the road …. then proceeded on to a big fast river, the Salmon, ….” (Cont. Next)

One mile South of White Bird, ID.

…As mentioned in the previous Photo Caption, the Narrator’s 1968 road (Older US-95), and White Bird Creek are in the deep canyon, as they go through White Bird town center. This is where the best photos would have been.
…In two miles (Upcoming Photos), the view changes dramatically, as we take the “new road” into the Salmon River Canyon, which will be at the hidden base of the far distant mountains /\ Above /\ Photo.
…. Again, you should recognize black volcanic rock. I have the impression that the previously mentioned volcanic flow, which covered one quarter the combined area of Idaho, Washington, and Oregon, is the biggest ever!!! It is said to have fill up 40,000 cubic miles!! See Blue Link Below =>

Although Achieved At Considerable Expense & Difficult Road Construction Work, This Modern Very High Bridge, Plus Many Considerable Deep Road Cuts In The Mountainside, Which Are At Left, Off Screen.
…Thus This Newer US-95 Highway And Bridge, Avoids the Steep and 21 Tortuous Hairpins of the Old Road!
…This Bridge Is Over White Bird Creek Canyon, And Above, Note Volcanic Rock In the Mountain Side.
…. Below Bridge, In The Foreground, Is Green Along The Creek, Such As Mentioned By ZMM Narrator =>

… “ The road has twisted and rolled over desert hills into a little, narrow thread of green surrounding the town of White Bird, then proceeded on to … ” (Cont. Next)

…In 1968, Robert Pirsig & Chris Likely Followed The Old US-95 Road, Along White Bird Creek, Through town of White Bird, And Then Continued Left Essentially West In The Canyon Seen Under The Bridge. Then Continued To The Southwest, About A Mile, Into The Even Deeper Salmon River Canyon.

Half mile Southwest of White Bird, ID.

…The Narrator’s “then proceeded on“ refers to his and Chris’s following the old road, which is along White Bird Creek, at the base of White Bird Creek Canyon, in /\ Above /\ Photo.
…Please be aware that in 1968, Robert Pirsig & Chris likely followed the old road along White Bird Creek to the left, West, about 1.5 mile, into the even deeper Salmon River Canyon. Of course, the bridge was not there in 1968.
….In the /\ Above /\ Photo => Be sure to study the black color and texture of the rock in this mountain. I believe this is volcanic rock that came from an ancient lava flow called the Columbia River Flood Basalts. As you view the next photos thru number 110-1148, look for this type of rock. About 2/3 of the pictures will clearly show kind of black volcanic rock, especially photos 110-1142 thru 110-1147.
…Many thanks to USCA Geology Professor Allan Dennis for his consultation (and getting it right), concerning the rocks labeled as "volcanic" and "Columbia River Basalts" in these photos.

A View Of The Newer Road, US-95, Going South =>
….The ZMM Route Now Heads Uphill South, And At The Top Will Descend Down And Into The High-Walled Salmon River Canyon.

The ZMM Narrator Says =>
…” Now we must head forward across this baking desert to wherever the road leads.” …. Start Chapter 25 …..
…”This morning a solution to the problem of stuckness was discussed, the classic badness caused by traditional reason. Now it’s time to move to its romantic parallel, the ugliness of the technology traditional reason has produced.
…The road has twisted and rolled over desert hills into a little, narrow thread of green surrounding the town of White Bird, then proceeded on to a big fast river, the Salmon, flowing between high canyon walls. Here the heat is tremendous and the glare from the white canyon rock is blinding. We wind on and on through the bottom of the narrow canyon, nervous about fast-moving traffic and oppressed by the fiery heat.

About one mile South of White Bird, ID.

…The ZMM Narrator’s “wherever the road leads“ implies (and mirrors) the burden he feels that he must now, in a NEW Chapter, take-up the NEW AND TOUGH SLOG, through the topic of “technological ugliness “ wherever it takes him, as he takes-up the “dry” topic (corresponding to the surrounding dry landscape, and trapped into this topic, similar to the travel is trapped in a High-Walled Narrow Canyon, as he discusses his proposed solutions to these problems.
….At this point, it is implied that there is no way to escape this upcoming difficult Chautauqua Topic Task, just as surely as it is inevitable that the road South, will enter a deep, nearly inescapable, barren, hot, river canyon.
….He will use down-to-earth, ordinary, everyday examples, corresponding to their lower altitude and barren circumstances.
…Please be aware that =>
…..1) The Narrator’s above top passage. is situated approximately one mile prior to White Bird, and farther from the Salmon River. And
…..2) The Narrator’s above longer lower passage. is situated well after White Bird, …”between high canyon walls.” of the Salmon River Canyoun.

…. Since I came through almost a month earlier than the Narrator, my photos generally show the land retains a bit of green, contrary to the Narrator’s above passage.
….Based on the Narrator’s poetic usage of town names, I am sure he likes the poetic ring of the words “White Bird”.
….The above photo shows the road one mile South of White Bird. A Better Photo to fit this ZMM Passage is needed.

July 2024 Added: … STARTING HERE: A 25 PHOTO INTERLUDE SHOWING SCENES ALONG OLDER US-95, CALLED ‘WHITE BIRD GRADE’’:

As **IF** He Actually Saw It, ALL AT ONCE, The ZMM Narrator says =>
“I see our road will go down and down through what must be a hundred hairpin turns into a desert of broken land and crags. I tap Chris’s knee and point and as we round a turn where we see it all I hear him holler, "Wow!"
At the brink I shift down to third, then close the throttle. The engine drags, backfiring a little, and down we go.
…By the time our cycle has reached the bottom of wherever it is we are, we have dropped thousands of feet. I look back over my shoulder and see antlike cars way back at the top. Now we must head forward across this baking desert to wherever the road leads.”

End Chapter 24
********************

Along The ZMM Route, When The ZMM Narrator Arrives At Top Of White Bird Hill, He Tells Us =>
the road drops down into an enormous canyon…. I see our road will go down and down through what must be a hundred hairpin turns …. ”

…However, Henry Gurr has extensively used Google Earth, and Google Street View, in an attempt to find any ground level view, even close to the ZMM Narrator’s a hundred hairpin turns.” Or even more than three ”hairpin turns
… Moreover, as you will see in the Following Series Of 12 Panoramas , showing our findings of the highest number of .”hairpin turns”, our best results, which as you will see, at any one place, are at most three “hairpin turns” And/Or 4 Levels Of Roadway.
..So, until proven otherwise, Henry Gurr concludes that Robert Pirsig could NEVER actually have seen, what he says!! Or any way close!! Most especially since Older US-95 (White Bird Grade), has only 21 switch backs.
…….Rather, his words “must be a hundred hairpin turns”, has to be an imaginary projection from noticing the ~21 Sharpe Doubleback Turns seen on a map, such as can be counted on /\Above/\ Photo, OR this Google Satellite View. Click Here.
…Those who doubt the above, should send an Email, asking Henry to supply Google Earth Views, which supports the above conclusion.

NOTE1:
…As Henry Gurr & David Matos drove down from the top of the newer US-95, we thought for sure, we should travel say 5 miles, and then would spot the turn off, between a cut in the guard rails, and even see marker signs. But we went right by the correct turnoff. without a clue, until to our dismay, we saw the signs for White Bird Town:
…Only later was it discovered that => , The actual turn off was about a mile down from the top of the newer US-95, and this turnoff, has NO guard rails anywhere close.!!
NOTE2:
…Because The ZMM Travel Narrative describes events proceeding DOWN White Bird Grade, this Series of Panoramas should properly show this Same Ordering.
…And of course, Henry Gurr & David Matos also should have driven DOWN
… However, try as we may, we unawares, entirely missed the turn off, from Newer US-95, onto White Bird Grade, Old US-95.
…So, when we reached White Bird Town, we decided to drive UP White Bird Grade, and take photos as we found good Photo Locations. AND THIS, is why most of these White Bird Grade Panoramas show our Toyota Prius, parked in an uphill direction.
NOTE3:
…Thus, there is a moral to this story => When you want to stop at certain place while traveling, looking for it, is almost certain to fail, as happened to David Matos & Henry Gurr, on this July 2024 trip, over SIX times!!.
THUS, It is a MUST => a) Expect failure to see what you are trying to find!!. b) Thus, to reduce chance of failure => c).put the place location into a GPS. d) Also, mark the location on a paper map, and e)Then go slowly & watch VERY attentively!!
