In the Late Afternoon Shadow From The Sun =>
….The Town and the ZMM Traveler Find Welcome Relief From the Intense Sun.
….“ So the thing to do when working on a motorcycle, as in any other task, is to cultivate the peace of mind which does not separate one’s self from one’s surroundings. When that is done successfully then everything else follows naturally. Peace of mind produces right values, right values produce right thoughts. Right thoughts produce right actions and right actions produce work which will be a material reflection for others to see of the serenity at the center of it all. That was what it was about that wall in Korea. It was a material reflection of a spiritual reality. …. Other people can talk about how to expand the destiny of mankind. I just want to talk about how to fix a motorcycle. I think that what I have to say has more lasting value.
.... A town called Riggins comes up and we see a lot of motels, …. ” (Cont. Next)
In The Salmon River Gorge, Entering Riggings, ID. Just South of Riggings, the major flow of the Salmon River comes in from the East. ….But US-95 follows ever upward on the West side, a South trending branch called the Little Salmon River.

Saturday, July 20, 2024: … Continuing To Drive Generally South, 15 Minutes After Riggings, ID, We Are In A Nice Valley, Experiencing The ZMM Narrator’s “And Follows A Smaller Stream. It Seems To Head Upward Into Forest.”
The ZMM Narrator says =>
… “and afterward the road branches away from the canyon and follows a smaller stream. It seems to head upward into forest.”
EXPLANATION:
…A) Just South of Riggins, Idaho, The Salmon River flows in from the East, and turns North. And here, the Little Salmon, flowing on savage North, comes into the main river here, such that US-95 can continue almost straight through.
…B) If you look at a road map or study This Satellite View Of US-95 Going South, From White Bird, Thru
Riggins, To New Meadows, Click Here.
…You will see that, despite the twists & turns of US-95 as it follows the canyon, the travel direction, on average, is pretty much South, the whole distance of 63 miles!

From The Hot, Dry, Barren Salmon River Canyon =>
….We Come Back Up To Cooler, Moist, Meadows, Surrounded By Green Forests.
….“ …. and afterward the road branches away from the canyon and follows a smaller stream. It seems to head upward into forest.
.... It does, and soon the road becomes shaded by tall, cool pines. ” (Cont. Next)
In The Valley of New Meadows, ID. Just as the Narrator described in the passage above, the road does indeed branch from the main river channel and follow a smaller stream ever upward.
….Here we follow the Little Salmon River in an ever narrower V shaped canyon, and eventually arrive into trees, which suddenly widens to this beautiful wide flat valley, shown in /\ Above /\ Photo.

The 45th Degree Parallel Building and Tourist Information Kiosk.
….“ Resort signs appear. We wind higher and higher into unexpectedly pleasant, cool, green meadows surrounded by pine forests. ” (Cont. Next)
In the distance is the entrance to town New Meadows, ID. All the scenery after Riggings, ID, actually does well correspond to the Narrator’s descriptions. However, the only “ Resort signs appear ” I remember seeing was this Travel Information Kiosk.
..****************..
….This Kiosk Building, besides providing Tourist Information, also celebrates US-95’s crossing of the 45th Parallel, as we travel South, along the ZMM Route. The “45” here signifies that you are exactly halfway between the Earth’s Equator (Zero Degrees) and the North Pole (90 Degrees).
…In the /\ Above /\ Photo, just right of the Kiosk, is a brown sign post, which also announces this same Message for South going traffic, as you will see in Next Photo.
…. The crossing of the 45th Parallel is UN-mentioned by the Narrator.
..****************..
…. Naturally, as done many times previously, here I wanted to check the accuracy of my GPS. Two successive “Save Way Points” on my handheld GPS receiver unit, read acceptable results as below:
…WayPt 291 = 45.0063622 Degrees North & 116.280445 Degrees West.
…WayPt 292 = 45.0059545 Degrees North & 116.2804128Degrees West
..****************..
To See A Satellite View Of This Location, Click Here. And AFTER this Satellite View Comes Up, look closely to see where “45th Parallel Dr” crosses US-95, at which point the Tiny, Roundish Kiosk will be seen. It’s a puzzle why the Google Satellite coordinates for this point are not exactly 45 degrees, but at 45.006428, -116.280366.

After We Pass This Green Field and Two Bushes of Blooming Wild Rose At Center & Right, We Will Head Down to Dry, Sandy Country.
….At Left, The Clouds Are Pink From The Sunset, With Corresponding End Of Day Down Feelings For The Narrator.
….“But as we leave New Meadows I note the long slant of the sun and a late afternoon depression begins to set in. At another time of day these mountain meadows would refresh me more, but we’ve gone too long. We pass Tamarack and the road drops down again from green meadows into dry sandy country.
.... I guess that’s all I want to say for the Chautauqua today. It’s been a long session and perhaps the most important one.
….Tomorrow I want to talk about things that seem to turn one toward Quality and turn one away from Quality, some of the traps and problems that come up.
.... Strange feelings from the orange sunlight on this sandy dry country so far from home. I wonder if Chris feels it too. Just a sort of unexplained sadness that comes each afternoon when the new day is gone forever and there’s nothing ahead but increasing darkness. ” ( Bolded text, at left, is ZMM Book’s emphasis.) (Cont. Next)
Eleven miles after Tamarack, ID. More depression and fatigue for the Narrator and, no doubt, Chris. But except for the Narrator’s wondering about what Chris notices, we never hear about Chris, unless Chris really voices it strongly.
…The ZMM. Narrator is mostly always reporting about own thoughts, feelings, and state of emotion.
..****************..
My ZMM Route research notes say “Smell of sage in the left over heat of the day. …. The new forming blossoms of wild rose smell of sweet raspberry”.
….It is interesting that a Google Earth View July 20, 2017 (also Google Satellite View), for this WayPt = 293, shows not only the open field, but also the Two Rose Bushes, the Electric Pole, plus the line of bushes on down the highway! It also shows a Distant Red Barn, but not the same one.
….In fact, I observed wild rose bushes like this, all the way from here to well into Oregon. Indeed, some 21 straight line miles West, at the Brownlee Campground, the Narrator quotes from a long Omar Khayyàm Poem about => “ “The First Summer Month That Brings The Rose.” ”

End of Day .... Strange Country .... Empty Highway .... Isolation .... Loneleness.
….“The orange turns to dull bronze light and continues to show what it has shown all day long, but now it seems to show it without enthusiasm. Across those dry hills, within those little houses in the distance are people who’ve been there all day long, going about the business of the day, who now find nothing unusual or different in this strange darkening landscape, as we do. If we were to come upon them early in the day they might be curious about us and what we’re here for. But now in the evening they’d just resent our presence. The work day is over. It’s time for supper and family and relaxation and turning inward at home.
….We ride unnoticed down this empty highway through this strange country I’ve never seen before, and now a heavy feeling of isolation and loneliness becomes dominant and my spirits wane with the sun." (Cont. Next)

Chris is irritable and wonders why we stop for so long, not knowing perhaps that it’s just the time of day that makes him irritable; but I give him the map to study while I change the oil, and when the oil is changed we look at the map together and decide to have supper at the next good restaurant we find and camp at the first good camping place. That cheers him up." (Cont. Next)

Be Sure You Have Clicked On /\Above/\ Photo, To Get Largest View, Then Please Notice In The /\ Above /\ Satellite View Photo, The Following =>:
…A) The dramatic effect of Landscape Elevation, As Follows =>
…..1) The Mountainous Regions (Right side of photo) are higher elevation, and thus cool enough to have more rain, making them somewhat green from grass, and various rain run-off-channels, hold more moisture for more green of trees. (This includes The Brownlee Campground, at Lower Right, as you can see.)
…..2) The Mountainous Regions (Left side of photo) are a whole lot lower lolevation and thus hotter, and thus lifeless-barren tan color: This is because any rain quickly runs to the gullies & temporary streams, making them green, but leaving the hillsides & tops, extreme dry & lifeless.
…B) In addition => Take time to study the Green Tree-lined Stream Valleys, mostly running from The Green Mountains (at the right), flowing West toward the Snake River & The Brownlee Dam Reservoir. These green lines of life nicely fit The Rubàiyat Quatrain. =>
…. “With me along the strip of Herbage strown

EXPLANATION:
As you have seen in most photos ever since White Bird Brade, and will see in some of the following Photos, this area of Idaho (with the exception of valley bottoms), is mostly treeless, because of overall low rainfall, and baked dry,
…Thus it is a total surprise that => Here, at The Brownlee Campground, there is a running stream here, and so many large, very green trees, in a dense forest!
… And we see that, the ZMM Narrator is extremely accurate in his descriptions, in the above ZMM Passage, such as =>: "BROWNLEE CAMPGROUND," which appears to be in a draw of the mountains. … under trees and past underbrush …. and draw with small stream,.
..****************.
….Forthcoming Photos, will show this treeless, extremely baked dry landscape, region of Idaho. In such areas, it is a surprise to see a running stream here at The Brownlee Campground.
….Much further West, you will see 11 Subsequent Photos, which are in Eastern Oregon, a few of which, in low valleys, show running water!
..****************..
Continued From ZMM Passage Above => If Your Look Closely, The Satellite View Shows Some Of The Exact Landscape Features Reported By The ZMM Narrator, Such As Towns, Highways, And, Even The Sign At Entrance To Brownlee Campground, And The Dirt Road Into Brownlee Campground.
… Click Here, And AFTER This Satellite View Comes Up, You Can Additionally =>
…A) Zoom out, and watch upper right till, you see town of New Meadows. It is interesting to see the wide, flat, New Meadows Valley!... THERE, you will see US-95 (ZMM Route), all the way South to Cambridge, ID. THEN, you can pick out Rt-71, and follow it to a Tight-U-Turn-In-the Rt-71 Roadway, where is exactly located the dirt road to Brownlee Campground. NOTE: At max zoom, even the SIGN at the Tight-U-Turn is visible!

PART I: GIVING ATTENTION TO “MASTER MOTIFS” IN ZMM =>
….A Continuation Of Motif Ideas From The Previous ZMM Part 2 Photo Captions, Since These Ideas Also Apply To The Above => ” CHIRPING OF SOME LITTLE BIRD … THERE’S NO SOUND.”
..****************..
FATHER & SON RELATIONSHIP:
….In the above passage, The ZMM Narrator says, “ I can hear a small stream nearby. Except for that and the chirping of some little bird there’s no sound.“
…A) Here the perceptive ZMM Reader should REMEMBER the Previous Album Photo Caption (At DeWeese Home, Blue Link Above) => And instantly pop to attention when reading at => “ the chirping of some little bird there’s no sound...“ AND
…B) Apply this “REMEMBER”, when reading the Narrator’s Seeming Useless, Out of Place Seeming Pointless Phrase, such as, “ chirping of some little bird … there’s no sound.“
…. WE MUST KEEP IN MIND => In ZMM, There Are NO Useless, Wasted Words! …
… In This Case (& Others Similar), The Reader Should “Pause And Think Beyond The “Ordinary”.Yes AHA => “MASTER MOTIF”
… And then realize this passage, is like OTHER ZMM Phrases such as => “In the distance a single bird cries plaintively.”
…. ….In Other Words => OK! YES!! This Fits The MASTER MOTIF Situation!!!
…..And, at such occurrences, we should immediately think of “MASTER MOTIF IDEAS”, as explained in => “ The Guidebook To ZMM.”
….THEN, as discussed in Previous Album Photo Captions, we are supposed to wonder what major “new arrival” ” is being thusly pre-announced: … What’s coming? …What is being foretold?
….As is discussed the NEXT 2 Photos, here is a place in ZMM where Chris is trying to ”reach out” to his Dad. But The Narrator only replies with ~”Non-Answers”, and after Chris is asleep, tells us he knows he is not communicating with Chris!!
..****************..
….As explained (Blue Link Above), these “MASTER MOTIF” ZMM Phrases, since they are repeated with emphasis, are called “‘Master Motifs’’ by “The Guidebook To Zen And The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”. (Continued Next Photo)

In /\ Above /\ Photo, Please Try To Imagine ”A Picnic Table“, Similar to The ZMM Narrator’s =>

Chris And The ZMM Narrator Arrive At The Brownlee Campground After Dark, Which This /\Above/\ July 2024 Photo, Taken At The Brownlee Campground. Partly Simulates, Their After Dark.
The ZMM Narrator Says =>
….[“ We follow the headlight beam down a secondary road toward Oregon to a little sign saying "BROWNLEE CAMPGROUND," which appears to be in a draw of the mountains. In the dark it’s hard to tell what sort of country we’re in. We follow a dirt road under trees and past underbrush to some camper’s pull-ins. No one else
seems to be here. When I shut the motor off and we unpack I can hear a small stream nearby. Except for that and the chirping of some little bird there’s no sound.] ”
…. "I like it here," Chris says.
…"It’s very quiet," I say.
…"Where will we be going tomorrow?"
…"Into Oregon." I give him the flashlight and have him shine it where I’m unpacking.
…"Have I been there before?"
…"Maybe, I’m not sure."
…I spread out the sleeping bags, and put his on top of the picnic table. The novelty of this appeals to him. This night there’ll be no trouble sleeping. Soon I hear deep breathing that tells me he’s already asleep.” ]
…. "I wish I knew what to say to him. Or what to ask. He seems so close at times, and yet the closeness has nothing to do with what is asked or said. Then at other times he seems very far away and sort of watching me from some vantage point I don’t see. And then sometimes he’s just childish and there’s no relation at all.
…Sometimes, when thinking about this, I thought that the idea that one person’s mind is accessible to another’s is just a conversational illusion, just a figure of speech, an assumption that makes some kind of exchange between basically alien creatures seem plausible, and that really the relationship of one person to another is ultimately unknowable. The effort of fathoming what is in another’s mind creates a distortion of what is seen. I’m trying, I suppose, for some situation in which whatever it is emerges undistorted. The way he asks all those questions, I don’t know.“
….END Chapter 25.
Brownlee Campground, ~18 miles Northwest of Cambridge, ID.
FATHER & SON RELATIONSHIP:
…The previous photo discussed => “The ZMM Narrator’s Seeming Useless, Out of Place Seeming Pointless Phrase, such as, “ chirping of some little bird … there’s no sound.“
ANB BECAUSE => In ZMM, There Are NO Useless, Wasted Words! We know to watch for special meaning, as follows …
,…Here is a place in ZMM where Chris is trying to ”reach out” to his Dad. But The Narrator only replies with ~”Non-Answers”, and after Chris is asleep, tells us he knows he is not communicating with Chris!!
. Thus the phrase => “The Chirping Of Some Little Bird … There’s No Sound.”… is to be understood as => Chris is trying to communicate ,,.. but there is practically no communication back from the Father.
...In the above ZMM Passage, we see how again and again Chris tries to “reach out” to his Dad by asking a series of questions. AND we see how at best, the Narrator’s answers to Chris are Vague Non-Answers.
…. In Previous Photos, we have discussed, how repeatedly the Narrator does not do what Chris wants. For example, in a previous photo at Colgate Lick Rest Area, Lochsha River Canyon ID, the Narrator does not go with Chris to look at the Mineral Salt Lick. They might have both together shared in discovering the old mineral springs, and salt lick mentioned, and all kinds of interesting animal tracks around it.
…Now add to this, in the above ZMM Passage, we see the Narrator’s failure to really constructively respond to Chris saying => ”I Like It Here.” , followed by a series of questions about being at this campground and plans for the next day.
Thus, At Best, The Narrator’s Answers To Chris Are Vague Non-Answers! AND, the Narrator makes no resolve to do better, but makes an excuse =>
... "that the idea that one person’s mind is accessible to another’s is just a conversational illusion, just a figure of speech, an assumption that makes some kind of exchange between basically alien creatures seem plausible, and that really the relationship of one person to another is ultimately unknowable..“
.
…. At this point we should suddenly realize **AHA**, the significance of the Narrator’s => The Chirping Of Some Little Bird … Again, as mentioned previously => This is Author Robert Pirsig’s way of telling us HE KNOWS =>
…That The Narrator’s communication with Chris, is failing, and he doesn’t know what to do about it. ….Continued: Next Photo.

After The Very Last Tiny Bit Of Red Has Faded From the Sky,
… In The Total Dark, The Narrator Ponders What to Do With Chris:
…..But There Is No Illumination!
….“ I wish I knew what to say to him. Or what to ask. He seems so close at times, and yet the closeness has nothing to do with what is asked or said. Then at other times he seems very far away and sort of watching me from some vantage point I don’t see. And then sometimes he’s just childish and there’s no relation at all.
.... Sometimes, when thinking about this, I thought that the idea that one person’s mind is accessible to another’s is just a conversational illusion, just a figure of speech, an assumption that makes some kind of exchange between basically alien creatures seem plausible, and that really the relationship of one person to another is ultimately unknowable. The effort of fathoming what is in another’s mind creates a distortion of what is seen. I’m trying, I suppose, for some situation in which whatever it is emerges undistorted. The way he asks all those questions, I don’t know.” (End Chapter 25.)

FATHER & SON RELATIONSHIP CONTINUED =>:
The Chirping Of Some Little Bird … There’s No Sound.…
…. In the previous photo’s ZMM Passage => We see, how at best, the Narrator’s answers to Chris are vague non-answers.
….We also see above that => the Narrator realizes Chris is trying to get communication & improved relationship. AND The Narrator KNOWS he is not adequately responding, but offers his own reasons for his failure => He just doesn’t know how to answer Chris.
… But there’s a serious disparity here => The Narrator can talk endlessly and deeply about Reality, & Quality, & Gumption Traps, but he can’t figure out how to relate to his own son!
…Moreover, in the passage above, when the Narrator does try to think about communicating with Chris, he comes up with Philosophical Conundrums (See bold, in above ZMM Passage), which completely cloud any constructive answers.
….This lack of any way to adequately answer back to Chris, is solidly punctuated, by here abruptly ending Chapter 25!
