…Planning Henry Gurr’s Return Trip To South Carolina:
……Thoughts On What Roads S/B Followed: ….
Yesterday ~11 am, Henry left Kalispell, MT after a good visit with his brother Philip and Wife Janet. Yesterday’s travel was South, to US 12, which lead through Helena, MT ( where US 12 joins & travel with US 278 )
….From Henena, Mt, US 12+278, are trending Southeast, along the Missouri River Valley to Winston, MT => For Henry, here was a convenient return, for a 2nd overnight at BLM Campground:
….Sleeping well beside the Missouri River (View /\ Above /\), Henry early gets out his Montana Highway Map, to re-view the possible routes ”Back East”, to his home in Aiken SC. ((You Dear Reader might ALSO re-view study these same routes, on Satellite View of Central Montana. which is /\ ABOVE /\ MENTIONED BLUE LINK. ))
…EXPLANATION => It’s been 17 years since Henry’s FIRST Travel of The Route In The Book “Zen & Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” , and today starts for Henry => A good chance to do more “ZMM Route Research” plus find & photograph any major changes, since 2002.
…Starting 1 August 2019, Henry had already traveled the ZMM Route from Miles City, MT, to Bozeman, MT, to Three Forks, MT … THUS …
…After studying maps for ~20 min Henry decided to continue ~30 miles South to Townsend, MT, then follow US 12, straight East, go over a darker green Range of Mountains (discussed next photo, called The Big Belt Mountain Range), then joining with US 89 goes north to White Sulphur Springs, MT. Then both routes follow a green valley East for ~5 miles, whereupon US 12 splits off to go generally East in semi-arid valleys, between Mountain Ranges. Then US 12 (about half way to US 191), goes by junction with Rt 294 => This Junction is the noteworthy location of TWO FORTHCOMING Gallery Photos for respectively a) “Desolate Dry Lands ” & b) “Landscape Nearly Instantly Changes To Beautiful Green of The Musselshell River Valley” !! ….Continuing on US 12, it finally joins into I-90 at Forsyth, MT
The ZMM Route, On US 12 Goes From Forsyth, MT, To “The East” For ~600 Miles, Is. AND To “The West” For 150 Miles.
….As may be seen on Maps, The ZMM Route on US 12 goes from Forsythe, MT (in Eastern Montana), goes East into Central South Dakota (~600 miles). AND in the opposite direction, The ZMM Route on US 12 goes from Missoula, MT (Western Montana) to well into Idaho (~150 miles).
….Plus The ZMM Route goes ~80 miles on US 212, from Laurel, MT, to Yellowstone National Park. There are hints that US 212, has a tangled history with US 12. ((You will eventually come to appreciate that => US 12 is a historical & rightly famous route, for kinds of reasons, as you will see in ~ 6 of the forthcoming photos of this Album. ))

….GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO /\ ABOVE /\ SATELLITE VIEW: >
….To Help Train Your Viewers Eyes, AND To Better Understand The ZMM Book Narrator's Descriptions. Please Carefully Study The Following = :-))
Please Scan Around This /\ Above /\ Satellite View, AND Notice =>
….Straight East from Townsend, MT, US 12 goes over a darker green Range of Mountains (discussed & shown previous photo, but not shown /\ above /\.), called The Big Belt Mountain Range), then joining with US 89 goes north to White Sulphur Springs, MT. As seen in this Satellite View, both routes follow the edge of a green valley Northeast for ~5 miles, whereupon US 12 splits off to go generally East in semi-arid valleys, between Mountain Ranges.
….It Is An Observed Fact That Higher Elevations Are Cooler, And White Areas In Photo Like The Above Are Snow, Which Tells Us Where The Highest Peaks & Ridges Are.
….Generally An Increase In Elevation Is Enough For Extra Rain, Thus Creating Forested Meadows,
…….Which the ZMM Narrator Delightfully Reports in ZMM Chapter 7.
….In above Satellite View, the higher elevations are the forested darker green areas, and reliably can be used to discern areas of higher relative landscape elevation:
….Another Useful Way To Discern Relative Elevation, Especially “Down-Hill” At A Particular Location, Are the lines of darker trees showing rain water run-off channels: In the above Satellite View, these typically surround the larger forested dark green mountainous areas, and a characteristic of interest in this Satellite View. These streams provide irrigation water for agriculture areas, which show in this satellite view, as Lighter Colored Patchy Areas, some of which are circular or rectangular, and showing presence of human activity!
….Many Places You See These Darker Green Tree Lines That Come Together, And Become Larger. If you follow these, they eventually become large enough to have sandy bottom, twisty-curvy, dry stream channels. If you pay attention to these, you can use these to identify the general downward slope of the surrounding land. Not as good as a Topographic Map, but good enough for lots of purposes!
….We Hope You, Will Take Some Time Studying These Darker Green Tree Lines, where you can imagine run-off rain waters would flow in streams and gulches: This will train your eyes to Really See, in Google Earth Images later in this Gallery Album. :-))
Your Close Study of /\ ABOVE /\ “Special Geography Note” …. Will Help Train Your “Viewers Eyes", To Better Understand The ZMM Book Narrator's Descriptions, As Relates Forthcoming Phots In This Album. :-))

~9:50 am Mon 12 Aug: Wheatland County, MT, Typical View Over Desolate Dry-Lands From US 12, ~1 Mile East Of Junction Of US 12, With Rt 294.
…. As stated in previous Photo, at Townsend, MT, Henry Gurr turned East onto US 12, where travel climbed out of the Valley of The Missouri River. The pleasant views of US 12 along the steady climb, close by “Deep Creek”, gradually changed to the forested slopes, pleasant views, & swings of US 12 through The Big Belt Mountains.
….After this memorable experience, the road landscape changed to, equally memorable, 60 miles of desolate, irregular-semi-level, dry-lands, which is shown in /\ ABOVE /\ Google Street View (GSV) Photo. ~5:00 pm Mon 12 Aug, Forsyth,, MT
….From US 12 & ZMM Route, It’s Nine Blocks To Rosebud County Library.
Back at the Porcupine Creek Camp Historical Marker Sign, Henry Gurr was mindful of need to check email, and make Internet Phone Calls. Forsyth was close, and its library might be closing soon. Continued driving leads to … A stroke of Good luck! … It was open until 7:00 PM!
….At Library => All jobs completed. Henry even remembered his Brother’s favorite “camping-spot finder” called https://www.allstays.com/Campgrounds/ Great resource! And quickly found directions and $ for a campground in Miles City, ~50 ahead, East on US 12 (Same highway as I-94, most of the way.)
Henry’s “Like” & “Comment” On Rosebud Library Facebook =>
This is a GREAT Library!! On my travel thru Forsyth back in Aug 12, 2019, the Librarian was Very Helpful with all my questions. AND WiFi Connection was perfect!
Thank you all!! Sincerely Henry Gurr Aiken SC.
A SIDE NOTE, IN CASE YOU NEED IT LATER:
What To Do, When Using Google Street View (GSV), And You Have a
FAILURE-TO NORMALLY-RESPOND, WITH NO ERROR MSG.
For all its abovementioned virtues, GSV has some kinks that you have to learn how to “work-around” => For example =>
If you click on /\ Above /\, at the Blue Link, and turn GSV toward East (toward Rt 447), and GSV “drive” for ~ a mile, to => Where you see the Old 10 swing toward North, into a grassy road-cut, away from I-94, your GSV “drive” (which has been nicely jumping forward with each mouse click on the Whitish Arrow Shape ), will suddenly stop responding!: The ONLY indication that something is wrong is the Whitish Arrow Shape that shows where the mouse click will go 1) Is not present or 2) Possibly in its place there is a small whitish white rectangle. …
This will be your ONLY indicator that your ~ “GSV next image, is not available.”
… In this case click your GSV lower left to “Expand” This will give a Clickable GSV Strip Map at the Image bottom. (Same as you see in most of my GSV’s): You can try mouse clicking on any of the roads on this Map …. And keep clicking until the GSV, Jumps to where you want to continue your GSV “drive”. If this fails try more clicks on the bottom Map. If the GSV “drive”, lands up on I-94, just click on the Map, for some other place for an OK continued GSV “drive”. Eventually you will get something to work!!
If you happen to lose your internet connection, you will see the SAME, symptoms. And all over again there will be almost no hint something is wrong. Mostly a sudden failure to respond,
END of NOTE RE GSV FAILURE TO RESPOND.

7:04 pm Mon 12 Aug, Old US 10, Rosebud, MT.
After Miles City, MT And Beginning of Chapter 9, … Robert Pirsig says in ZMM =>
…."Now we follow the Yellowstone Valley right across Montana."
And Somewhat Later … Beginning of Chapter 10 =>
…. “Outside in the valley again the sky is still limited by the bluffs on either side of the river, but they are closer together and closer to us than they were this morning. The valley is narrowing as we move toward the river’s source.”
….NOTE: The /\ Above /\ Panorama Photo Shows The SAME CAMERA PHOTOS (And SAME Physical Location), As Previous Hi Quality Panorama Photo, But “Stitched”. By Less Than Perfect Efforts of Henry Gurr, Using Available APP’s.
..AND the /\ Above /\ Photo Is Kept Here, So You may “See The Difference”.
….Which as you can see, the Photographic Quality is acceptable, but … The Less Than Perfect Stitching Of Henry Gurr shows at center of Panorama, Darkened Sky, unfortunately includes only 4 of the 8 Photos Supplied. This is because APPs Henry Gurr used, would NOT assemble ALL the photos supplied. Ultimately caused by Henry Gurr’s inadequate Panorama Photographing Technique. ContFmPreviousPhoto => As Robert Pirsig says in ZMM =>
….Twisting hilly roads are long in terms of seconds but are much more enjoyable on a cycle where you bank into turns.:
~7:24 pm Mon 12 Aug: Traveling “The ZMM Route” On Frontage Road Address, 4386 Old US 10, Shown On GSV Strip Map As 1.7 Mile West of Hathaway Eastbound I-94 Rest Area, Rosebud. MT.
The /\ Above /\ Google Street View (GSV) of => Twisting Hilly Road, Is View On Old US-10, Between Forsyth, MT, & Miles City, MT.
….AND … This “Old Hwy 10” is much more enjoyable , and was exactly what I (Henry Gurr) experienced, when I drove Prius through this area in 2019.
Just As => Robert Pirsig’s ZMM Book Passage Says =>”
“ ….We are just vacationing. Secondary roads are preferred. Paved county roads are the best, state highways are next. Freeways are the worst. We want to make good time, but for us now this is measured with emphasis on “good” rather than “time” and when you make that shift in emphasis the whole approach changes. Twisting hilly roads are long in terms of seconds but are much more enjoyable on a cycle where you bank into turns.
…This ZMM “Emphasis On “Good,” , May Seen Traveling East On “Old Hwy 10” Which, At Many Places Is Not Far From, Or Is Along Frontages To US 12 Combined With I-94.
….HOWEVER: A Conventional Paper Map Will Likely NOT Show These ZMMQuality Roads. Thus You Will Have To Plan Ahead With Your Computer =>
…A) Look these up on an enlarged Internet Map, such as Google Maps OR
…B) MapQuest. OR
…C) Your cell phone may work, except in remote locations. OR
D) As you travel, you learn how to “Spot” a good turn onto a ZMMQuality Road (by intuition) =>
…E) Your discernment may lead to an “ emphasis on “good” rather than “time” ” travel on interesting “ Twisting hilly roads”!! ..****************..
Despite Robert Pirsig’s 1968Trip Statement, He MUST Have Used “The Interstate”, Because Reasonable “Higher Quality” Alternates Were Pretty Much Not Available.
…In the beginning of ZMM Chapter 14, as they ride into Bozeman, MT, The Narrator says ” This interstate freeway we are on must not have existed then.“ [When Phaedrus was teaching 1959-1961]. But by 1968 Narrator’s trip, the Interstate Highway System was generally complete. AND in Montana. Montana Highway Department Maps, Show That by year 1960, The Montana Interstate Highways Are Completed. Click Here. These maps show for example => I-94 runs from North Dakota Border thru Miles City, MT to where it ends with merge with I-90 In Billings, MT. And I-90 continues through Butte, MT to Idaho Border
….From this we conclude this is one of the VERY few places where Mr. Pirsig’s Interstate Highway, memory back his time at MSU, is not correct.
..****************..
…DATE-LINE: Sept 23, 2021. by Henry Gurr.
From ZMM, It Is Not Clear How Much The Narrator Could Travel “Non Interstate”, In Montana, However Much He May Have Wanted To.
….Along the ZMM Route, there many place where Mr Pirsig would have a choice whether or not, to use “The Interstate”. But In many places there is no other reasonable choice. For Examples see A) & C) => .
..A) Traveling West from Miles City, MT would initially have to be I-94. But at Rosebud, MT, going West on Old US 10, would be likely be a very good road choice thru to Hysham, MT.
..B) After Hysham, MT, the alternates to Interstate, are some longer secondary paved roads, which eventually get back to I-90 at Custer, MT Study you map for good choices => 1) Some roads on North Side of Yellowstone River, OR 2) Paved road going SW from Hysham, MT.
..C) Going West from Custer, MT => The Interstate Marginal Roads (Some portions likely Old US 10), are available all the way through Billings, MT, to Laurel, MT.
..****************..
… Henry Gurr’s 2002 ZMM Route Photos (Two Blue Links Below), Show And Discuss Likely Roads The ZMM Narrator Traveled.
..********..
….Back in 2002, I did my best to find “Non-Interstate”: BUT back at that time, did not realize that I should have started traveling West onto Old US 10 At Rosebud, MT. Thus I failed to photograph many sights likely seen by Narrator, Chris & Sutherlands in 1968.

NEW TOPIC => You Might Try “GSV Driving” (Blue Link Below), Which Will Virtual Reality Travel The Above-Mentioned => “Old Hwy 10” which is much more enjoyable , and was exactly what I (Henry Gurr) experienced, when I drove Prius through this area in 2019.
….INSTRUCTIONS For Google Street View “GSV Driving” Old US 10, 11 Miles East of Forsythe, MT, and ~3 Miles Further East Is Rosebud, MT.
… But this Google Street View Is better, since it => In addition to 360 deg Full Circle Panorama, it offers ability to magnify, and see better the Cattle Guard, the rutted dirt road, + the Line of Trees That Mark The Distant Yellowstone River!!
…Moreover you can, Right Click On The Above Blue Link, and Ask for “Open in a new Tab, Then => Click the Google Street View Image Where you want the “View” To go. Thus you can Click-Click-Click = “GSV Drive” East along the Frontage Road, which is most places is “Old US Hwy 10”. The landscapes along the twists & turns of this old narrow road are FAR more interesting & enjoyable, for a slow and easy car, motorcycle, or even “GSV Drive” !!
…For example, after the above Blue Link comes up, you can turn the GSV toward East, then “GSV Drive” by the grassy road cuts, up onto broad grassy planes, come down where you can see the line of trees by the Yellowstone River, even the river in some places: Then you can “GSV Drive” by A Water Filled Old Yellowstone River Oxbow, see the water level town of Rosebud, THEN go over I-94, get back on Old Hwy 10, and continue down into Tree Lined, Stream, & Curved Road Scene, WHICH IS SHOWN IN /\ ABOVE /\ PHOTO.

~8:24 pm Mon 12 Aug: Arriving At Big Sky Campground (Side By Side With The Traffic Noise of BOTH US 12 & I-94), Miles City, MT. .
…It’s Been A GOOD Day, Of Exploring Remote Areas Of Montana! And Henry Was Tired Enough To Sleep Well, Despite The Constant “Thump-Thump”, Racket Of The Trucks, All Night Long.
…Henry Gurr’s tent was on a green grassy area, beneath trees seen at left edge of /\above/\ GSV. After we get a good shower, and despite the noise of trucks rumble & thump, ~100 feet away, a good night’s sleep was to be had.
…As is shown on the GSV Strip Map, Henry exit Big Sky, he will turn right East, onto US 12, cross I-94, and continue up the Mountain Pass: Going East, this will continue on => The Travel Route of the book, “Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance”.
…Several Facts Relevant To The Next 11 Photos, Which You Should Please Keep In Mind =>:
...A) In the Photo Above => The big rock formation seen in upper left (look close for horizontal layers), is part of the foothill beginnings of the Minor Ridge discussed further in B) below. This Ridge’s rock formation, (also seen in US 12 rode cuts ahead), are actually composed of multi-colored layers of volcanic dust, giving evidence of very long history of eruptions, likely through eons of time, from Yellowstone National Park, massive volcanic eruptions some 335 miles away to Southwest.
…B) Several Miles East of Miles City, MT, there is a Major Ridge This Ridge, which looks like a minor mountain ridge, that in this area of Montana, forces the Eastward trending Yellowstone River to turn ~45 degrees, and go Northeast, to eventually join the Missouri River close to the Montana / North Dakota border. Important Ridge in its River Forcing, but seems to have no official name.
…C) This Above-Mentioned “Ridge”, Because of Its (725 Ft,) Elevation Increase Will Feature In Next 11 Photos Of This Album. And Be A Focus Of The Discussion, especially in Relation to the ZMM Narrators description of US 12, for the next 25 miles East. In these Forthcoming 11 Photos you will see for the elevation from the Yellowstone River at Miles City, MT (2330 Ft), climbs with US 12 to Ridge Top (3127 Ft.) at Main Ridge Road, and this elevation increase is reflected in the amount of Rainfall And Thus Forested Meadow. Correspondingly you will see this is An Important DRAMATIC FOUNDATIONAL ELEMENT In Last Half Of ZMM Chapter 7 =>
.,… Especially at This Ridge-Top =>Where The Narrator’s RAIN + SUDDENLY COOL is for him, Chris & the Sutherlands => SUCH A DELIGHT, and CONTRAST: Especially AFTER Having Suffered Through Eastern Montana WHERE => ……“ the thermometers are reading 108 degrees in the shade.” +
….D) To Help You Understand The Many, Many Important Ramifications of A), B), &,C) as well as how the Narrative of ZMM Chapter 7, is “controlled” by Terrane Of This Minor Ridge, you may wish to have up in a separate “Browser Frame”, Please Right Click & Select “New Tab”, & after page comes up, study Henry Gurr’s PART TWO & PART THREE, which you scroll down to.

… 7:35 am Tues 13 Aug: …. US 12 Junction with Main Ridge Road, At Near Top of the Mountain Ridge Pass, ~11 Miles East of Miles City, MT:
…Continuing From Previous Photo, Henry starts looking for “A High-Ground Photo View Point, with “Flowers in meadows” & “pines” … WHEN … To the South, appears a Micro Wave Dish Tower:
…. In /\ Above /\ GSV, This “Hi-Ground” Microwave Dish Tower Is Seen Upper Center, In Tree Gap.
….Hoping it’s on highest ground with a good West view, Henry goes toward it: Goal is to find shoot photos to illustrate Narrators whole passage, especially => ” huge valley and the river below” in this passage =>
…” Then the rain comes hard on the road with a gust of earth-smell from the dust that has waited for too long and the dust beside the road is pocked with the first raindrops.
This is all so new. And we are so in need of it, a new rain. My clothes become wet, and goggles are spattered, and chills start and feel delicious. The cloud passes from beneath the sun and the forest of pines and small meadows gleams again, sparkling where the sunlight catches small drops from the rain.
We reach the top of the climb dry again but cool now and stop, overlooking a huge valley and river below.

…To the left, you will see the pavement of “Main Ridge Road”, and upper left center the “Microwave Tower”. Following the horizon line to the far right, you can also see distant tiny trees, on top of a uniform tan slope: This a major US 12 road cut, which in this view, is to the West. This major uniform dry grass slope, road cut, you can identify in several of my following photos (For example my Panorama “ From Top Of US 12 South Bluff.”).
(ChangesSinceRobertPirsig1968Trip):
….After Robert Pirsig’s Original ZMM Route Trip1968, There have been reports that this this stretch of US 12, from Mile City, MT to the Eastern Montana Border, may have had many major road improvements, including major moves of the road to new locations, a new bridge (& major road re-location) over the Powder River, as well as a really major “new looking road-cut”, seen in Henry Gurr’s 2002, 2006, & 2019 Photos of this area, This “New Looking Road-Cut< Is Seen In The 3rd & 4th Photos NEXT.
