It's The End of a Wonderful Day: The Narrator’s Words Wax Poetic,
….As If A Quiet, Thoughtful Celebration.
…….Thus Ends ZMM Chapter 12.
…. “Sylvia puts her hand on John’s arm. I am conscious of the sounds of the river rushing past boulders below and a fragrance in the night wind. The woman, who knows all fragrances, says it is honeysuckle, and we are quiet for a while and I become pleasantly drowsy. Chris is almost asleep when we decide to turn in."
Gardiner, MT. I did not notice any honeysuckle while I was at the Hillcrest.
….This motel was originally called the "Hillcrest Cottages". This is still etched on their original sign, which is still there. Later, the name was changed (Painted over) to Hillcrest Motel, because "Cottages" was out of style, and this name had bad association with “Old & Nasty”: AND thought not to have NO bathrooms, (or they were all rusty).
….Thirties Style Motels are now "OK", so the name has been changed back the Hillcrest Cottages Motel.

....Today we should arrive at the school, the place where an enormous coalescence of things occurred, and I’m already feeling tense.
....I remember reading once about an archeological excavation in the Near East, learning about the archeologist’s feelings when he opened the forgotten tombs for the first time in thousands of years. Now I feel like some archeologist myself.

…. “ There is nothing unusual. It’s just this archeological feeling that the calmness of the surroundings conceals things. A haunted place. .. I really don’t want to go there. I’d just as soon turn around and go back. .. Just tension, I guess. “ ]
…. “ It fits one of the fragments of this memory, in which many mornings the tension was so intense he would throw up everything before he got to his first classroom. He loathed appearing before classrooms of students and talking. It was a complete violation of his whole lone, isolated way of life, and what he experienced was intense stage fright, except that it never showed on him as stage fright, but rather as a terrific intensity about everything he did. Students had told his wife it was just like electricity in the air. The moment he entered the classroom all eyes turned on him and followed him as he walked to the front of the room. All conversation died to a hush and remained at a hush even though it was several minutes, often, before the class started. Throughout the hour the eyes never strayed from him.
… He became much talked about, a controversial figure. The majority of students avoided his sections like the Black Death. They had heard too many stories.“
Traveling On Montana Route 540, 8.5 Miles Downriver From Miner, MT.

In above ZMM Passage
…1) You will see one of many examples of how the Narrator actively looking at his surrounding landscape => “ the calmness of the surroundings conceals things. A haunted place I guess. “ , is then prompted into his following story! This could be Master Motif?
…2) The Narrator, 3rd paragraph uses the word “fit": This word is used in ZMM (with variations) approximately 32 times.

Following US-89 & The Yellowstone River, We Arrive At Southwestern Edge OF Livingston, MT.
….Looking Back at the Mountains of Yellowstone National Park.
…. “ The school was what could euphemistically be called a "teaching college." At a teaching college you teach and you teach and you teach with no time for research, no time for contemplation, no time for participation in outside affairs. Just teach and teach and teach until your mind grows dull and your creativity vanishes and you become an automaton saying the same dull things over and over to endless waves of innocent students who cannot understand why you are so dull, lose respect and fan this disrespect out into the community. The reason you teach and you teach and you teach is that this is a very clever way of running a college on the cheap while giving a false appearance of genuine education.
.... Yet despite this he called the school by a name that didn’t make much sense, in fact sounded a little ludicrous in view of its actual nature. But the name had great meaning to him, and he stuck to it and he felt, before he left, that he had rammed it into a few minds sufficiently hard to make it stick. He called it a "Church of Reason," and much of the puzzlement people had about him could have ended if they’d understood what he meant by this.“

Winding Down Through Bozeman Pass
….And Into The Irrigated Green Valley Of Montana State University. [ “ .... we go over a low pass and into Bozeman itself. .... suddenly I’m looking forward to what’s ahead.“ ]
Halfway Down Bozeman Pass, Just East of, Bozeman, MT. As I went over this pass on my 2002 trip along this Interstate, I looked for a good photo place that showed the walls of the mountain pass and the edge of the town. But there was never any such view. And it was too late to go back.
…But in September 2006, I remembered to stop sooner, and /\ Above /\ Photo is the result, but minus any evidence of the town! All the brown grass is because of dry season in September.
….The blue haze is smoke from extensive forest fires in Colorado about a thousand miles away. Those fires must have been huge to cause this much smoke so far away! This smoke persisted for more than the two weeks duration my 2006 trip from Red Lodge through Bozeman MT, to Helena MT, and back through YNP, and the Grand Tetons!

The Green Valley Where In ZMM “It All Happened. “
….In The Distance, The Bridger Mountain Range.
……Although Bozeman Pass Is Out of View To The Left, It’s “Crack In The Mountains” Looks Just Like The “Low Place” In Horizon Center.
…. “ We ride down out of the pass onto a small green plain. To the immediate south we can see pine-forested mountains that still have last winter’s snow on the peaks. In all other directions appear lower mountains, more in the distance, but just as clear and sharp. This picture-postcard scenery vaguely fits memory but not definitely. This interstate freeway we are on must not have existed then.
East side of Bozeman, MT.
..****************..
Despite Robert Pirsig’s 1968Trip Statement, He Must Have Used “The Interstate”, Because Reasonable “Higher Quality” Alternates Were Not Available.
…In the beginning of ZMM Chapter 14, as they ride into Bozeman, MT, The Narrator says ” This interstate freeway we are on must not have existed then.“ [When Phaedrus was teaching 1959-1961]. But by 1968, and the Narrator’s trip, the USA Interstate Highway System was generally complete. AND in Montana => The Montana Highway Department’s OWN Maps, show by year 1960, that the Montana Interstate Highways were completed. Click Here. For example => These maps show as completed => I-94 from the North Dakota Border thru Miles City, MT, to where it ends merging with I-90 In Billings, MT. And I-90 continues through Butte, MT to the Idaho Border
….From this we can conclude this is one of the VERY few places where Mr. Pirsig’s Interstate Highway memory back from his time at MSU, is not correct.
..****************..
…DATE-LINE: Sept 23, 2021, by Henry Gurr.
From ZMM, It Is Not Clear How Much The Narrator Could Travel “Non Interstate”, In Montana, However Much He May Have Wanted To.
….Along the ZMM Route, there are many places where Mr. Pirsig would have had a choice whether or not to use “The Interstate”. But In many places there are no other reasonable choices. For Examples see A) & C) => .
..A) Traveling West from Miles City, MT would initially have to be on I-94. But at Rosebud, MT, going West on Old US 10, would be likely be a very good road choice through to Hysham, MT.
..B) After Hysham, MT, the alternates to the Interstate are some longer secondary paved roads, which eventually get back to I-90 at Custer, MT Study your map for good choices => 1) Some connecting roads on North Side of Yellowstone River, OR 2) Paved road going SW from Hysham, MT.
..C) Going West from Custer, MT =:> The Interstate Marginal Roads (Some likely Old US 10), are available all the way through Billings, MT to Laurel, MT.
..********..
….Back in 2002, I did my best to find “Non-Interstate”: BUT back at that time, I did not realize that I should have started traveling West onto Old US 10 at Rosebud, MT. Thus I failed to photograph many sights likely seen by Narrator, Chris & Sutherlands in 1968.

In Late Summer and Early Fall The Springtime Green Valley Has Turned to Golden and Brown.
….[ “We ride down out of the pass onto a small green plain. ..... This interstate freeway we are on must not have existed then. “ ]
By I-90 Just After “Leveling-Out” From Coming Down Bozeman Pass, East side of Bozeman, MT. Here is the freeway as Narrator and crew most likely would have experienced it.
….Most of the moisture here comes as irrigation or in the winter and spring as rain or snow. When late summer comes the non-irrigated land dries up as you see here.
….The Narrator and crew came through here in early July, so his “small green plain“ would have been factually correct, and they would have seen the valley as is shown in nearly all my other Gallatin Valley photos, except the /\ Above /\ September 2006 Photo.

Coming Off I-90, The Entrance To Town Is On East Main Street.
…. The ZMM Statement => “ .. ‘To travel is better than to arrive’ comes back to mind again and stays. We have been traveling and now we will arrive. For me a period of depression comes on when I reach a temporary goal like this and have to reorient myself toward another one. In a day or two John and Sylvia must go back and Chris and I must decide what we want to do next. Everything has to be reorganized.“
Main Street Entrance to . Bozeman, MT. As you read the Narrator’s above passage, did you recognize a potential ZMM Master Motif? => “To travel is better than to arrive.“ … But paradoxically this phrase is used only twice.
…. As should be true for a book on “Quality”, the Narrator uses the word “Quality” ~480 times, “Better” 54 times, the phrase "Better Than" 15 times, and “To Arrive” 12 times. .

…. “ We eat lunch in a glass-and-chrome restaurant that brings no recall at all. It looks as though it’s been built since he lived here and shows the same lack of self-identity seen on the main street.
.... I go to a phone book and look for Robert DeWeese’s number but don’t find it. I dial the operator but she’s never heard of the party and can’t tell me the number. I don’t believe it! Were they just in his imagination? Her statement produces a panicky feeling that lasts for a moment, but then I remember their answer to my letter telling them we were coming and calm down. Imaginary people don’t use the mails. John suggests I try to call the art department or some friends. I smoke for a while and drink coffee, and when I’m relaxed again I do this and learn how to get there. It’s not the technology that’s scary. It’s what it does to the relations between people, like callers and operators, that’s scary.“
Central Business District, Corner Wilson Ave At Main Street, Bozeman, MT. This is one of the few remaining “ Glass and Chrome “ 50’s-60’s Style Restaurants I was able to find on Bozeman’s Main Street. It may or may not be the ZMM Restaurant.
….When Mr. Pirsig was teaching at Montana State College, 1959-1961, The DeWeese family lived in Bozeman, not too far from the Campus. But by time of above ZMM passage, July 1968, they had just built a New Home,`12 miles South of Bozeman, and their address was in the town of Gallatin Gateway, MT.
….So, it isn’t surprising that the phone operator did not know them, and that in 1968 the DeWeese phone number was not in the Bozeman phone directory.
….Despite what the ZMM Narrator reports, my memory is that the DeWeese Family Phone Number back in 2002, was in “The Phone Book”, and still may be.

A Wide, Irrigated, VERY Green Gallatin Valley Runs South from Bozeman To Cottonwood Canyon.
….As You Can See => The Road Is Nicely Paved.
…. “From the town to the mountains across the valley floor must be less than ten miles, and we cross that distance now on dirt roads through rich green high alfalfa ready for cutting, so thick it looks difficult to walk through. The fields sweep outward and slightly upward to the base of the mountains where a much darker green of the pines rises suddenly up. That will be where the DeWeese’s live. Where the light green and the dark green meet.“
Gallatin Gateway, MT. This road is called 19th Street in Bozeman, but is called => Route 19 South once you get out of town.
….Contrary to the Narrator’s “ now on dirt roads .“ , the road in 2002 is nicely Paved, This pavement, starting in Bozeman, continued all the way to Cottonwood Canyon Road where the DeWeese’s live. Pavement continues on Cottonwood Canyon Road two thirds of the way to the DeWeeses’.
EXPLANATION:
….The DeWeese family live 12 miles South of Bozeman, and their address is in the town of Gallatin Gateway, MT. So, it isn’t surprising in 1968 that the DeWeese phone number was not in the Bozeman phone directory. Nor surprising that the operator did not know them.
NEW TOPIC:
….When the Narrator can't get the DeWeese phone number, he gets a “panicky feeling“, and has to calm down with coffee before he can deal with the problem.
… Persons who have lived very, very, stressed lives will sympathize with the panic feeling brought on by a series of too many new challenges. High-stressed persons, like myself, instantly recognize the need for calming effects of a pause, for rest with food & coffee, etc.

….Hi Henry
Delighted you enjoyed this simple video.
….I mounted my [Quad Copter] Drone on top of my car and drove the route. It has an excellent built-in gimbal that is designed against wind movement when flying, but works just as well. Also the remote sits inside with me, so turning on and off is done safely.
….The idea was to provide you with a vicarious visit to Tina DeWeese's and Tom Thorton's place and follow part of the [Cottonwood Canyon National Forest] Trail we hiked together. [In Early August of 2019.]
Of course you know it follows a part of the Pirsig [and Chris Mountain Climb] Pilgrimage trail. In that sense, it is ZMM related, so historical.
….I know you said you thought you had made your last trip to Bozeman, so I decided to give you a small taste of that trip. …
….I intended to use better drone footage along the trail, but that trail turns out to be a no fly zone, National Forest Land. So those shots are done by hand-holding the drone (same with corner street sign). I did not think those hand held drone shots were nearly as effective as the shots with a flying drone.
Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.
