”The Full Story Of Henry Gurr’s Big Trip West: Part I.”=>
….Ever since Henry Gurr’s email November 17 2019 => ”Announcing eBook Publication of The Sarah Vinke Biography (SVB)” , Henry had been planning "A Big Trip Out West", with the following GOALS: =>
..A) To place paperback copies SVB in Libraries (or Archives), where potential audience might be: This includes: Library Archives” at => Dallas Center IA, Grinnell College IA, Iowa State Historical Society, Iowa Genealogical Societies, Montana State University, U. Minnesota, U. Wisconsin, Wisconsin Historical Society, etc.
B) To give, as a token of appreciation, paperback copies SVB to persons who helped with The Sarah Vinke Biography Field Research. This includes persons in Dallas Center Iowa (Sarah Vinke’s home town), Grinnell College in Iowa (Sarah Vinke’s Undergraduate School), and University of. Wisconsin Madison (Sarah Vinke’s PhD Graduate School), Montana State University (where Sarah Vinke taught English with Robert Pirsig who, because of Sarah Prodding, became author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.).
..C) Hold public “Book Signing Events” at each whistle-stop, with the public & newspaper reporters invited etc. A few paperback copies of SVB, will be available for sale.
..D) Find & Photograph Any MAJOR CHANGES, along The Route of the Book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance., Since Henry Gurr’s First 2002 ZMM Route Research, 17 Years Earlier.:
”The Full Story: Part II.”=>
….Henry Originally Scheduled His “Big Trip”, So He Could Attend, The Gurr Family Reunion, At His Grandfather Gurr’s Old Farm, Near Brookville IN (July 20, 2019),
…. BUT UNFORTUNATELY Henry didn’t start the Creation Of The Paperback Version: , up-till “It’s Getting Late” ~June 5, not realizing the endless series of Format Fixes that would crop up, pushing the completion date relentlessly; UNTIL =>
… TOO LATE to have 46 Paperback Copies ordered by two weeks prior to, dead-line before must he leave South Carolina.
….The Gurr Family Reunion got canceled because of Monster Heat-Wave in Indiana, allowed Henry to postpone his departure by ~1.5 days, in vain hope of picking up his (ordered July 5), 46 Paperback Copies of SVB, prior to leaving SC. Despite hours on the phone to Amazon Customer Service, this ended in failure. NO COPIES! :-(( Noon July 20 Henry leaves South Carolina without 46 Paperback Copies, and wondering how he will “make-do”, …

~4:00 pm Tuesday, 30 July 2019, South Central South Dakota, Panorama Photo From Bluff Where I-90 Crosses Missouri River => ….Henry Is At A Fantastic Interstate Rest Area, With Interstate Exit Just Prior To The River. ….As for most of his travel days, Henry needs to pull into a Rest Area, for his mid afternoon “Cat Nap”! Also regularly do maintenance check of Toyota Prius: Tire pressure “kick-test”, then carefully feel tires all the way around & look at engine oil & other liquid levels under the hood. ….Thus, just before I-90, started down the Slope To The Missouri River, high on an overlooking bluff, Rest Area Exit: Time for A Rest & Maintenance !! As You Continue To Scroll The /\ Above /\ Panorama, You Will See A View Of A Giant Statue: Dignity Of Earth & Sky By South Dakota Artist Laureate Dale Claude Lamphere, About Which TravelSouthDakota.Com Says => ….She casts a peaceful gaze across the waters of the Missouri River. During the day, the South Dakota wind brushes the diamonds in her star quilt, causing blue shades to twinkle in the sunlight. At night, she stands illuminated and strong. She is Dignity. ….The Dignity sculpture is a stunning combination of art and history. Located on a bluff between exits 263 and 265 on Interstate 90 near Chamberlain, the stainless steel, 50-foot-tall statue was specifically designed by sculptor Dale Lamphere to honor the cultures of the Lakota and Dakota people. That’s why he used three Native American models ages 14, 29 and 55 to perfect the face of Dignity. ….“Dignity represents the courage, perseverance and wisdom of the Lakota and Dakota culture in South Dakota,” Lamphere said. “My hope is that the sculpture might serve as a symbol of respect and promise for the future. …Representing the rich Native American culture of South Dakota, the 50-foot Native woman gracefully wears a dress patterned after a two-hide Native dress of the 1850s. She holds outstretched a quilt featuring 128 stainless steel blue diamond shapes designed to flutter in the wind. During the day, her star quilt – a representation of respect, honor and admiration in Native American culture – glitters in the sun with color-changing pieces that move with the wind. At night, LED lights cause the diamond shapes to glow in the night sky, casting a peaceful presence easily visible from the Interstate. Continued From Previous Photo: An Illustration of Montana US 12 Travel East.
A Special Added Geography Note, Concerning /\Above/\ Satellite Photo, Of Central Montana Flat Dry Lands: …. Straight East from Townsend MT, US 12 goes over a darker green Range of Mountains (discussed previous photo, called The Big Belt Mountain Range), then joining with US 89 goes north to White Sulphur Springs MT. As seen in this Satellite View, both routes follow a green valley East for ~5 miles, whereupon US 12 splits off to go generally East in semi-arid valleys, between Mountain Ranges. ….It is an observed fact that higher elevations are cooler, and white areas in photo like the above are snow, which tells us where the highest peaks & ridges are.located.
….Generally an increase in elevation is enough for extra rain, thus creating forested meadows, which the ZMM Narrator Delightfully Reports in Chapter 7. In above Satellite View, the higher elevations are the darker green areas, and reliably can be used to discern relative landscape elevation:
….Another useful way to discern relative elevation, especially “down-hill” at a particular location, are the lines darker trees showing rain water run-off channels: In the above Satellite View, these typically surround the larger dark green mountainous areas, and a characteristic of interest in this Satellite View. These streams provide irrigation water for agriculture areas, which show in this satellite view, as Lighter Colored Patchy Areas, some of which are circular or rectangular, showing presence of human activity!
….Many places you see these darker tree lines that come together, and become larger. If you follow these, they eventually become large enough to have sandy bottom, twisty-curvy, dry stream channels. If you pay attention to these, you can use these to identify the general downward slope of the surrounding land. Not as good as a Topographic Map, but good enough for lots of purposes!
….We hope you, will take some time studying these darker tree lines, where you can imagine run-off rain waters would flow in streams and gulches: This will train your eyes to Really See, in Google Earth Images later in this Gallery Album. :-))

((For Explanation Re /\ Above /\ Photo, See Next Photo.)) Back Country Roads VS Interstate Freeways: As The ZMM Book Narrator Says => “Paved county roads are the best, state highways are next. Freeways are the worst. We want to make good time, but for us now this is measured with emphasis on "good" rather than "time" and when you make that shift in emphasis the whole approach changes. Twisting hilly roads are long in terms of seconds but are much more enjoyable …. .. ….As Henry Gurr was leaving Dallas Center IA ~8:00 am July 30, he needed a Good Travel Route, so as to reach the Public Library in Miles City MT, by 11:00 am next day. Henry studies maps to find efficient routes towards Miles City MT, and also wondering how to find a convenient campground. ….Henry’s map study agreed with GPS route, which returned to Perry IA. Then Back Country Rt 144 to I-29 North thru Sioux City IA to Sioux Falls SD: Turn West, and followed I-90, crossing Missouri River, continued through Rapid City SD, then angled, to US 212, This two lane Back Country Road (in dark, much of it dirt & gravel) after covering a corner of Wyoming, entered the extreme SE corner of Montana. ….Henry was really tired, when he ~ 11 pm by accident found a convenient campground at Broadus MT: This was close enough to Miles City MT so next morning, Henry could drive the 80 miles, get to the Library by 9:00 am. ….AND of course it was Back Country Road All the Way, as you see in View /\ Above /\ !! ….Here Henry Gurr was to meet Amorette Allison, 3rd from left, who with Miles City Library, set up todays Book Sighing Event.
“Popular Author to Visit Miles City”!
….As was /\ proclaimed /\ on front page headlines, of the Miles City Star !!
This front page newspaper article was well done, quite long. and included a color photo of the cover of SVB!! As did also, color posters all over the Library, headlined “Special Guest Author!
11:00 am to 1:00 pm, To A Very Attentive & Appreciative Audience, Henry give his Lecture, Question And Answer Session, And Book Signing.
EXPLANATION:
… While Henry was doing ZMM Route Research in Miles City, back in 2002, he met many people who generously helped him with his Miles City ZMM Research. This included Community College Professor Robin Gerber (Rest in peace), who introduced Henry to Amorette Allison, of the Miles City Historic Preservation Office.
….Montana Historical Society says =>
Amorette Allison has played an instrumental part in collecting, archiving, and writing articles, even 7 books on Miles City History. Her passion for Miles City history led her to a job as the Historic Preservation Officer. … She has researched past [Miles City Star Newspaper] editions, oral histories, and general research to write the columns .about this town.
Amorette received a copy of SVB as “Thank-You”, in recognition of her excellent contributions to ZMM Book Research Re Mile City, back in 2002.
Henry immediately starts long drive 286 miles to Bozeman, MT by ZMM Book Route which is mostly now I-94, followed by I-90. NO Back Country Roads, since there was no time to follow any other than Interstate.

Henry Gurr’s “Book Signing” Tour & “Big Trip Out-West” Brought Him Into Montana from South Dakota, late previous day, 30 July 2019.
….After finishing his 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, “Book Signing” Event in the Miles City Public Library, Henry Re-Visited ZMM Route Scenes in Miles City, rested under shade trees. then drove West on I-94. About 26 miles West of Miles City, Henry seeing the I-94 Westbound Rest Area, remembers he needed better photos of the Yellowstone River, better than those he took here on his trip here, back in 2002, Click Here.

. Click Photo several time to gt the largest view , and with magnifying glass, look closely at the right side of the river (just above post), to see a riverside shelf, with RR Tracks! A fact Henry didn’t realize until he heard the rumble of a train beneath his feet, while taking this pano-photo, of the River and The Rest Area Buildings.
….Trees Mark The Yellowstone River.:….With continued Panorama Scrolling to the right (using the Bottom Click&Drag Slidebar), you see the Rest Area Border Fence, and Water & River Banks of the Yellowstone River, and then The Buildings of the I-94 Rest Area. Notice that there are nearly Solid Walls xurrounding the Two Picnic Tables. These walls are Wind Breaks, to partly shelter the Montana Winter Traveler! …Continued scrolling, shows the Fence again, this time toward the West. Continued scrolling, shows the The Same River Scene again.
In /\ Above /\ View And Later Photos Of The Yellowstone River Valley , we see that the valley itself is in relatively flat terrain, so the river itself has almost no downward slope. Thus it is that the Yellowstone River is a wide and calm body of water. This is indeed great for river boat transport such as Lewis & Clark, pioneers, trappers, cattlemen, and the early US Military. And this is reason for Miles City being originally “established in a river bay, at the north-flowing Tongue River flowed into the east-flowing Yellowstone River. The first fort was known as the Tongue River Cantonment or the Tongue River Barracks and was founded on August 27, 1876. A second, permanent fort was constructed on higher ground two miles to the west of the mouth of the “established in a river bay, the Tongue River north-flowing into the east-flowing Yellowstone River. The first fort was known as the Tongue River Cantonment or the Tongue River Barracks and was founded on August 27, 1876. A second, permanent fort was constructed on higher ground two miles to the west of the mouth of the Toung River [[where it flows into the Yelolowstone River.]
…. ((NOTE: If you look at a map, the Tongue River is a major river system, roughly parallel to & (by ~50 miles) West of the Powder River, mentioned and discussed in previous photos. ))… “
…. Indeed, River Valley’s in general and especially the Yellowstone River, are often the preferred routes for construction of main roads, including railroads such as we see here!

..AND the /\ Above /\ Photo Is Kept Here, So You may “See The Difference”.
….Which as you can see in the /\ Above /\, the Photographic Quality is acceptable, but The Less Than Perfect Stitching Of Henry Gurr failed to include the Photos of the Second Half of the Panorama. This is because APPs Henry Gurr used, would NOT assemble all the photos supplied. Ultimately caused by Henry Gurr’s inadequate Panorama Photographing Technique. Previous, Photoi Stitched & Edit Improved by FlatWorld.com are Far Better.
Concerning Panorama’s Seen In This Album: In Cirmcumstances Where Camera Panorama Photographing Is Done Correctly, The Resulting Photos May Be Adiquately “Stitched” Together By The Following Apps, Which-Ever APP Works Best:
…..1) AUTOSTITCH: Simple to use & powerful: But supplied photos must have proper matching overlap.
…..2) MICROSOFT COMPOSITE EDITOR: More difficult to use, but offers some user control, to overcome improper matching overlap.
…..3) GIMP with Pandora Plug-In: More difficult to use, and offers some user control, to overcome improper matching overlap, but too often this fails to stitch Henry Gurr’s supplied photos, which apparently are pretty bad when it comes to having proper matching overlap.
…..4) HUGIN: Is highly recommended, and most people use it very successfully. However Henry Gurr, after hours of concentrated effort, fails to achieve any stitches, on his Win 10 Laptop.
…..5) ADOBE PHOTOSHOP The most recent & most powerful Versions, can gave EXCELLENT results, as is seen for the Panoramas of this Album, that were Very Skillfully Stitched by FlatWorld.com. .

…Where The ZMM Narrator, Chris, & The Sutherlands Stayed The Night.
….Henry Gurr, does as Narrator (Robert Pirsig), says in ZMM => “At Laurel, in sight of the mountains at last, we stop for the night. The evening breeze is cool now. It comes down off the snow.
…. In above photo, you can just barely discern the distant mountains to the south. …look very closely, you can see in the distance, the line of the darker grey-blue mountains, just right of the largest tree. Do Mouse Right Click & Open In A New Browser Tab, To Go To Google Street View, At Location of /\ Above /\ Photo.
It’s past sunset, when Henry sees Exit Sign = Laurel MT, he suddenly remembers a Camp Ground, he stayed at back in 2002: This was at Truck Stop at the Laurel MT I-90 Interstate Exit.
But taking the first exit seen does not fit what is remembered …After ~20 minutes of drive around confusion … Henry can’t stay direction oriented because it’s dusk + heavy cloud overcast … so Henry pulls into a parking lot to study maps & GPS. A lady calls “Can I help you?” She doesn’t know of any campgrounds, but offers grassy area by her home which is also a Bed & Breakfast.

Getting Dark Wednesday, 31 July: Main St,. Laurel MT..
….Laurel MT is where the ZMM Narrator reports the evening (end Chapter 10) & next morning (start Chapter 11) scenes, of Pirsig, Chris, and the Sutherlands, when they stopped here on their original 1968 motorcycle trip, in this Album Called “The ZMM Route”.
…. .”Sylvia and John and Chris and I walk up the long main street in the gathering dusk and feel the presence of the mountains even though we talk about other things. I feel happy to be here, and still a little sad to be here too. Sometimes it’s a little better to travel than to arrive.”
End ZMM Chapter 10.
….Henry spends his time re-visiting (and re-living) ZMM Book Scenes, such as the ZMM Narrator’s Hotel and Restaurant. These are the topic of the next ~18 photos.
…Henry first was in Laurel MT in June 2002, when his ZMM Route Research Trip, retraced the ZMM Book Route and Narrative. Henry Gurr’s 2002 Pictures Documenting And Illustrating Pirsig's Novel. With Much Information, Of Course Also About Laurel MT:.

Evening Wednesday, 31 July: Can See /\ Above /\, The 2nd Story ZMM Narrator’s “Porch”, In This Rear View of Hurzler Hotel, 401 E. First St. At Intersection With Pennsylvania Avenue, Laurel MT.
Robert Pirsig Mentions The Second Story “Porch” in ZMM => At Start Chapter 11
“I wake up wondering if we’re near mountains because of memory or because of something in the air. We’re in a beautiful old wooden room of a hotel. The sun is shining on the dark wood through the window shade, but even with the shade drawn I can sense that we’re near mountains. There’s mountain air in this room. It’s cool and moist and almost fragrant. ….
I go to a common washroom at the other end of a long corridor of the same dark wood, floorboards creaking all the way. In the washroom the hot water is steaming and perking in the pipes, too hot at first for shaving, but fine after I mix it with cold water.
Through the window beyond the mirror I see there is a porch out in back, and when done go out and stand on it. It’s at a level with the tops of the trees surrounding the hotel which seem to respond to this morning air the same way I do. The branches and leaves move with each light breeze as if it were expected, were what had been waited for all this time. ”

In the evening light, Henry Gurr’s ZMM Route Research takes him (the third time), to the Laurel MT location of the ZMM Narrator’s Hotel, as seen in above . Sept 2015 Google Street View (GSV). This is where Pirsig, Chris, and the Sutherlands stopped at on their original 1968 motorcycle trip.
….Yes the Hurzler was still there (Aug 2019), but indeed a Dismal Scene: The property was overgrown with weeds & trees sagging out of control. I saw that the building had been long abandoned, and in badly deteriorating condition! It was so very sad to see, Henry made no attempt to take photos.
….This Hotel Hurzler in Laurel MT, located one block away Major Railroad Switch Yard, was originally designed as an overnight dormitory, for Railroad Train Crews. This is why
the building, although sturdy, has Spartan Features. These features were just fine for the buildings original purpose, but too Spartan for the modern motel guest.

Henry Gurr Arrive, Evening Wednesday, 31 July: A View of Pennsylvania Avenue, Showing Its Approaching Main Street, Laurel MT.
….The /\ Above /\ Google Street View, Shows A Likely Scene For => The ZMM Narrator’s Chapter 11, Next Morning, & Walk To Breakfast, With Chris, & Sylvia.
….The /\ Above /\, shows the likely view, as they came out the front of the Hurzler Hotel, and walked toward their Restaurant. The Owl Café’, on Main Street, two blocks West, is most likely, since there is no other restaurant anywhere close:.
…. “Chris is soon up and Sylvia comes out of her room saying she and John have already eaten breakfast and he is out walking somewhere, but she will go with Chris and me and walk down with us to breakfast.”
NEW TOPIC: ChangesSinceHSGTrip’02
..….The Hotel Hurzler has a great history. However, in the last ~25 years, no one is finding any uses for it. THUS =>.A Call Upon Laurel City Council, and Community Minded Citizens, and Community Welfare Agencies, To Join Forces, and actively seek to find ways for economically sustainable uses, and hence achieve long term preservation:.
…This building in the past was successfully used as low cost housing, for people on low income, such as the elderly. And used again for Low Cost Housing, could be yet become a future, very viable IMPORTANT resource for the entire Laurel Montana Area!!"
…. . We urge those interested in Montana's future and historical Preservation to take action to save this unique property. It is probably the most endangered ZMM Route architectural sites. Unless preservation efforts redevelop the site soon, it will likely be lost to disrepair.

….We are in love with everything this morning and talk about good things all the way down a sunlit morning street to a restaurant. The eggs and hot cakes and coffee are from heaven. Sylvia and Chris talk intimately about his school and friends and personal things, while I listen and gaze through the large restaurant window at the storefront across the road. So different now from that lonely night in South Dakota. Beyond those buildings are mountains and snowfields.
