Pictured here is a page from the 1913 Grinnell “Cyclone” Yearbook. The poem is titled “The Shack Bunch”—“The Shack” being Grinnell College’s nickname for the women’s living quarters i.e. Mears Cottage.
This is where Sarah lived during her first and perhaps second year at Grinnell College, and can be seen previously in the album. The poem briefly, affectionately, and a bit humorously describes the women living in Mears Cottage. Notice that at the beginning of the poem’s fourth stanza, we see mention of our Sarah (Sarah J.)!
Be sure to click to enlarge the photograph. Sarah’s line reads: “Sarah J.’s dandy; Always makin’ candy; Or hangin’ on her balcony rail.”
