4:44 pm Wed May 18, A 360 Deg Panorama View Of Our Sarah’s Childhood Farmstead.’
…..Turning North Off Of Sugar Grove Ave (Rt 44), And Half Way Up The Gravel Driveway To Sarah’s Old Farmstead, Lorna Grow Recognized The Man Who Was Operating The Farm Tractor With Row-Crop Planter, Shown At The Opening View, At Left of This Panorama:
As happens ABSOLUTELY everywhere we go, Lorna of course stopped to talk !!
…. And Henry took this opportunity to take the series of 8 photos that form the /\ Above /\ Panoramic View Of Sarah’s Old Farm=> At first shows (looking South towards Sugar Grove Ave = Rt 44), the Gravel Driveway & just a bit of Lorna’s Car .From This Gravel Drive Location, this panorama shows the entire area around the camera, including the Agricultural Lands to the West, then the Northward Gravel Driveway & Our Sarah’s Farmstead & Home. Then the Agricultural Land to the East s, then swinging around to the Southeast the Neighbors Buildings (on Sugar Grove Ave = Rt 44). Then looking closely you can see the pavement of this highway and one tiny car.
…The included photos DSC_0057 - 0063 form a 360-degree view. To get a detailed view of each photo, be sure to click the photo a few times to enlarge it to its largest size.
The SECOND Previous Photo, Fully Discussed The ~1350 Acres Of Agricultural Lands, Once Owned By Our Sarah’s Paternal Grandfather Henry Jennings: Plus Also Quoted was Howard E. Snedden’s Book (~1890) Saying =>
….Jacob Jennings (Sarah’s father), “now owns 260 acres, made under a state of high cultivation and well improved. He carries on general farming, in which he meets with excellent success.
… Well …. The /\ Above /\ Panorama shows, at least part of those 260 acres, which were inherited jointly by Our Sarah and Sarah’s Sister Katherine, upon the death of their Mother Sarah Elisabeth Adams Jennings in 1942.

NOTE: The Previously Seen Gravel Drive Way, From Sugar Grove Avenue (Rt 44),upon reaching the South Lawn, Turns Right & Continues To The Right, This In /\ Above /\ Photo, Is Seen As Narrow Tan Strip, Leading Further Right, To The Barn & Other Farm Buildings.
….Since Our Sarah’s Mother & Father Were Married in 1884, We Surmise That Is Approximately When This House Would Have Been Built.
From this location, we get an excellent view of Sarah’s old farmhouse, now completely remodeled to modern standards. This is quite in contrast to the deplorable conditions of the farm seen in a ~1940 Photo of this house, which is in ZMMQ Photo Gallery Album: “Additional Documents and Photos Concerning Sarah Jennings Vinke Old Dallas Center IA Farm” : ((See next photo for Access Instructions.)

5:11 pm Wed May 18, A Portrait Of Larry Reed, Owner of Our Sarah’s Childhood Farmstead & Home.
….As Fully Discussed In Several Previous Photos =>
…..Ms Lorna, with help of Court House data, found where was, the Farm where Sarah Jennings and Sister Katherine grew up, and later inherited jointly from their Mother.
….AND as discussed (and shown in the previous 3 Photos), Lorna & Henry had arrived at Our Sarah’s Childhood Farmstead Buildings:…BUT … Nobody answered knocks at the doors to the Big White Farmhouse, but ~100 ft to the West, the door opened, in answer to Henry’s knocking at a Double-Wide Mobil Home:
… There we met Larry Reed, and he was quite positive as we explained our Sarah Winifred Jennings Vinke Field Research Project. To Lorna & Henry’s surprise, that Mr Reed ALREADY knew the names of Sarah Vinke and Sarah’s Sister Katherine.
….Mr Reed had as a youth to adult years, had helped his father run this farm (rental-purchase) agreement with Sarah and her sister, some 50 years ago! Thru this time he was aware the owners of this farm were by name Sarah Vinke and her Sister Katherine Smyth, and has vague memories of possibly meeting them.
…. We-all had a good discussion for the next hour, and he consented to Henry’s taking (many) photographs, of the farmstead & himself.
….Later Mr Reed Gave Henry Xerox Copies Of Sarah Vinke Related Legal Paper Work Having To Do With Farm Rental-Purchase: Also He Kindly Made Paper & Digital Copies Of Old And Current Photos Of Sarah’s Childhood Farm and House.
…. All of the materials Mr Reed gave Henry are in Album (SEE LINK BELOW_: “Additional Documents and Photos Concerning Sarah Jennings Vinke Old Dallas Center IA Farm” , with Thanks to Mr Larry Reed Current Owner of this farm.

Cont Fm Previous Photo: 4:50 pm Wed May 18, From The South West Lawn, A View Of Front Entrance Door & Porch, Of Our Sarah’s Childhood Farm Home. ….The /\ Above /\ Photo, showing a covered porch, has the appearance of the Front of the House, facing directly West. However this entrance must not be much used, since there is no evidence of a path or regular walking on the grass. The garage and gravel driveway, access the opposite (East) side of the house, evidence that this is the most used entrance to this home. Henry Gurr’s Closing Thoughts About His Visit To Dallas Center IA, As Part of His Sarah Vinke Biography Field Research Trip: ….And it was great to hear from Larry Reed, that the beams and very wide boards, for Sarah Jennings’ Farm House, constructed in ~1860, was of walnut wood, that had been harvested on the farm land owned by Sarah’s Paternal Grandfather. Also, the facts that Sarah’s father Jacob Jennings, fearing tornados, filled all walls with chicken wire mesh reinforced concrete (for extra strength), and for extra 2nd floor insulation. This effectively, made a second lath & plaster inner wall. Larry saw these, when as a boy helped his father remove all this, in order to add more modern wall-cavity insulation. He said “Those old walnut beams were so dense and hard, you would smoke your drill trying to penetrate them.” … Later, Lorna Grow, in email writes: “[I talked to] Jim Ball (Dallas Center windmill guy, who said that), the Jennings farm house was made with walnut trees from the farm. The studs went from the foundation clear up to the roof. Some of the boards were really wide.” So we get different stories, but that is a possibility. Just think of [those pioneering] men who had to handle it. And they did.” (( A NOTE by HSG =>: Of course these walnut double story vertical beams, were local sawmill, rough cut, full size, true 2 X 4’s, unlike the weak pine 1.5 x 3.5 inch beanie pine sticks used today. )) Photo File = DSC_0067.JPG … Posted 21 Aug 2020.

4:53 pm Wed May 18, On The Southwest Front Lawn Of Our Sarah’s Childhood Farmstead & Home, Lorna Grow & Larry Reed Discuss? … Who Else? … But Sarah Jennings Vinke!
Henry Gurr’s FURTHER Closing Thoughts => More Than I Could Have Imagined, I Found That Sarah’s Mother, Father And Grandparents Were Real TRUE Pioneers.
….AND it is thus very clear, that these Pioneering Parents & Grandparents, are => The TRUE foundation of Our Sarah’s personality and mental drive, which came from her direct connection with this frontier and its pioneer “can do”, work with your hands, be a builder, frame of mind! Moreover, these Pioneers were part of the Victorian Era, about which Wikipedia says => “Victorian values emerged in all classes and reached all facets of Victorian living. The values of the period—which can be classed as religion, morality, Evangelicalism, industrial work ethic, and personal improvement—took root in Victorian morality” .
….With such influences, Sarah was brought up to be tough, independent, and like other Victorians, used to having to do dawn-to-dark grueling hard physical labor under arduous, hard, demanding, dirty, dangerous conditions, and think nothing of it!
…. Although raised in completely different conditions, Robert Pirsig was of similar mindset, and this why he and Sarah understood each other so well.
A PERSONAL POST SCRIPT NOTE by HENRY GURR =>
….This above how “Sarah was brought up to be …”
…. AND about which Wikipedia’s Stated “Victorian Values”,
….Were also EXACTLY how I was brought up & hence resonate on both SV & RP !! !!

6:07 pm Wed May 18, Grave Markers Of Our Sarah’s Family, The Only Granite Monument to “Jennings”. Masonic Cemetery, Some 2.5 miles Southwest of Dallas Center IA.
Lorna Grow & Henry Gurr Finished Talking To Larry Reed Owner of Sarah’s Childhood Farmstead & Home, Gave Him Our Hearty Thank-You For Wonderful Help!, And At Lorna’s Suggestion, Continued Field Research At The Only Cemetery Near Dallas Center IA.
…. Lorna knew exactly where this Cemetery was: AND Henry had already (with help of Google), found photos of the Jacob Jennings Family Grave Markers,
….THUS => Showing these to Lorna (on trusty Laptop Computer), we both knew what to look for. It took only `15 minutes to locate the Big Granite Monument With “Jennings”, Shown /\ Above /\,
….AND where you also see …. The individual grave markers that are placed in a row before the larger Jennings Monument Stone. The next four photos show each of these marker, which are respectively Sarah's Father, Mother, Sister who died young of unknown cases, and Sarah's Aunt (Mother's Sister), who must have been unmarried, having her maiden’s name still.
….Note that Sarah's Father died ~3 years after Sarah completed her PhD Thesis and Diploma.

~7:30 pm Wed May 18, Illuminated By Sunset Glow, A View of The Roy R Estle Memorial Public Library, West Walnut Street Business District, Downtown Dallas Center IA, Where At 7:00 pm Closing, Henry Gurr Temporarily Suspends His Sarah Vinke Biography Research.
….Although I (Henry Gurr), don’t remember it, I must have gone back to further talk to Larry Reed, since my paper research notes, written at the end time of first days Library Research, merely say => “Miles from Dallas Center Library to Sarah’s Farmhouse Prius 2.3 Miles.”
Thus Ends A Perfect Day, And A Perfect FIRST Superb Day Of Field Research Into Sarah Jennings Vinke's Life & Times In Iowa!
High Points of This FIRST Day’s Sarah Jennings Vinke Dallas County Field Research.
….Ms Lorna, with help of Court House data, found the location of the Farm where Sarah Jennings grew up. There we met Larry Reed, who some 50 years ago, had helped his father run this farm for Sarah and her Sister Katherine, then joint owners by inheritance, from Sarah’s Mother upon death in 1942. He gave Henry Gurr Xerox copies of Sarah related paper work having to do with farm rental purchase, and some old and current photos of farm and house. It is just great to have all this information, the most important part being, yet another clear paper documented, tangible physical proof, with Sarah’s own signature, that => We have found the correct farm!!
….Of course Henry took many photos of how the house, farm buildings, and surrounding land look now.

Cont Fm Previous Photo:
The Previous Photo discussed => The Important Findings of Lorna & Henry’s FIRST Day’s Sarah Jennings Vinke Dallas County Field Research.
….But In Addition => A JUNE 29 2016 EMAIL From Lorna Baldner Grow, Filled Out More of The Importance Of These Findings, For The Sarah Vinke Biography (SVB), In Which Lorna Says =>
….”In order to have a better understanding of Sarah Winnifred Jennings, we look back to the family, whose Great Grandparents, Zebulon and Rhoda (Leslie). Jennings, natives of New Jersey, [who had] moved to Penn. Life during the early 1800's was primarily rural with hard working families barely eeking out a living. However, Sarah W. Jennings’s Grandfather Henry, decided to on (speculation) to purchase ~1200 acres In Iowa, and eventually move there.” …. [The writing of SVB] “Doesn't have to be "Like" a novel, but can be more narrative. I bet your daughter [Margaret] would be good at suggestions. Let her study about it and she will come up with some more
ideas. ”
Next Lorna Suggests An Example Of Sarah Finke Biography Writing:
….”Why would a young farmer in Fayette Co. Pennsylvania, with a family of twelve, buy land in Dallas County Iowa in 1854, 8 years after Iowa became a state in 1846?
…At that time, [his son] Jacob Jennings was 3 years old and his father Henry Jennings (I can't figure out if Jacob was born in 1851, and he was 41? when he married Catherine Bromfield Henry had 12 children. [We can] Can generally state the Jacob was one of 12 children. Without going into detail can put their migration 9 years after he bought land. This intro might be an introduction by way of a forward or preview or something like that.”

Mentions local in-justices, vigilante actions, & railroad history, but don’t see Sarah’s Family. ….2) Blue ”Lists Of Men Eligible For Military Service”. In The Section On Sugar Grove Township, were listed 8 Jennings, but nothing we didn’t already know. There were ~66 total Jennings men listed for Townships Near Dallas Center IA. ….3) Lorna pulls out a Gray Ring Binder ”Iowa Dallas County Births Book1 1880 -1885.” , having 5 names Jennings, but none close enough to our Sarah. ….4) Henry scans shelves and find 3 Inch Thick Black Ring Binder ”Marriages“, and in Jennings discover, page 096, Jennings, Katherine B, Edwin W. Smythe 18 Sept 1924” {{Later this Marriage Article in newspaper Dallas Center Times, was found. See ~FIFTH Photo Next Below.)) ….5) Lorna in searching the Maps Shelf, finds a whole book full of Maps => “Atlas 1875 Of Iowa.” : This is where we saw as reported in a much earlier photo ….A) Sarah's old One Room School House, and ….B) Found Confirmation of the purchases of Sarah’s Paternal Grandfather, Henry Jennings, the land ownership constituting of Sugar Grove Township sections, 28, 32, and 33 . ….6) We studied ”Hastings History OF Dallas County, Iowa. “ By Eugene N. Hastings, Published in 1937. This had discussions of three different Jennings, but none related to Our Sarah. ….7) We found ”Dallas County Records Volume ! “”1971, by Howard E. Snedden. This was a Compilation of Marriages and later in Volume, a Compilation of Sugar Grove Township Original Land Records, we assume from primary Courthouse Records. Henry’s notes at the time List 5 Marriages and List 5 Land Records, which overall duplicate (and confirm) HSG & LBG previous findings, from other source books or documents. Continued next photo. On the phone earlier today (Aug * 2020) Lorna said she clearly remembers this time, with pleasure. ….Despite I don’t much remember it, Lorna & I must have (of course).discussed our just completed day of Sarah Jennings Research accomplishments, and discussed plans for the next day => This included 1) My again going to The Estle Library Genealogy Room, and working there alone to, continue follow-up on all the Research Leads and Notes, which Lorna had already given him earlier this day. And later 2) Lorna would come to the Library to assist.
….Although Not Discussed At This Time, But Based On Next Days Emerging Events =>Lorna’s Ever Active Genealogy Researcher’s Mind, MUST have been (silently to herself), evolving her own plans, how to follow-up on many UN-finished leads. The most important was => How to Convert Courthouse Lot & Block Numbers, for the locations of Sarah’s Mother’s House, to a Dallas Center Street Address?

~2:05 pm Friday May 20, Looking Northeast: The Really Beautiful Victorian House Which Was (Apparently, Nov 3 1920, Purchased By) Sarah’s Father& Mother, At Lots 7 & 8, Block10, Dallas Center IA.
…. From Courthouse Records, The Jacob & Elisabeth Jennings Dallas Center House & Property, That Sarah And Sister Were Bequeathed Jointly (1942), In Will From Their Mother, Sarah Elisabeth Adams Jennings.
… When & How This House Entered Sarah’s Life Is Indicated by Our Sarah Vinke Biography Resource Page (SVBRP), Which says => “ … by the 1920 Census, Sarah’s father was indicated as no longer working for income, whereas Sarah and her Sister were the family’s support, being unmarried public school teachers, still living at home at ages 26 and 30. Sarah and Katherine would have preferred teaching in Dallas Center, since other public schools, such as Perry IA or Des Moines IA, would be more than 10 miles away. … Katherine, was two years principal of Dallas Center schools, and for just prior to her marriage, was two years principal of Clarinda [Iowa] schools, 115 miles by car from Dallas Center.
….We can .. speculate that Sarah’s father sold the farm to retire (well off?) from a successful farming career, [and considering the Howard Snedden quote blow], would well afford a Very Nice & Large House on two town lots. Thus => .
…This, with relatively low cost in-town living, plus two daughter’s respectable incomes, is what allowed Sarah, in 1920, to leave teaching and start graduate school at the University of Wisconsin. While she completed her degrees there, Sarah was a teaching Assistant in Latin, then Assistant in Classics, which off-set her university tuition cost, and provided three school years assistant professor salary of respectively $500, $600, and $600. Similar circumstances would apply to Sister Katherine, who obtained her MA, at University of Minnesota. (( Due to inflation, $600 in 1920 is equivalent to $7800 in 2020.)
…. An Earlier Photo This Album Quotes “Mr Howard E Snedden (~1890’s) Mention Of Finances Of Jacob Jennings (Sarah’s father) , “now owns 260 acres, made under a state of high cultivation and well improved. He carries on general farming, in which he meets with excellent success.
…THUS was financially afforded, this Very Nice & Large Home {/\ Above/\ Photo), and by relative dates of purchase, is very likely the house where Sarah & Sister Katherine were living, … during their early teaching Careers in the surrounding Dallas County.
