Saturday, July 27 2024: … A Historical Marker For => Hwy 40 Scenic Bypass: Where Can See The Transcontinental Railroad

History.

…It was a race. The Union and Central Pacific Railroads (CPRR) were crossing the continent with steel rails each trying to build the most miles and so get the most money from the government. The rugged Sierra and its winter climate were challenges. 15 tunnels were needed - each through solid granite, all with black powder, nitroglycerine, and hand labor.
…In 1866 the railroad came to Summit Valley. 8,000 Chinese workers and a few whites, toiled on the grading, rail laying, and tunnel building. There were camps up and down the route along with the support needed to maintain them.
…The wail of the train whistle comes through Summit Valley many times a day now. Once it was only a dream but America was growing, and people would come to California, the land of promise. A railroad would encourage migration and enable California’s bounty to be shared with the rest of the world. Theodore Judah was sure he could conquer the Sierra and he set to work to lay out the route. He did and the railroad was built overcoming labor shortages, strikes, accidents, floods, geography, fire and avalanche. When it was done, a ribbon of steel joined the nation.
…The completion of the railroad in 1869 meant that for $140 you could travel from New York to San Francisco in 6 days, 20 hours - much less than the six months it had taken the wagon trains not long before.
A Good Story.
…The CPRR was so powerful it could even move mountains. In order to get the higher fee for construction of track in the Sierra versus in the flat Central California, the CPRR forced a change in the definition of where the Sierra began. They moved the mountains miles west and closer to Sacramento.
…Theodore Judah, having surveyed the local trees, did not think snow would be a problem over Donner Summit. He was sure accumulations would not be much and could easily be pushed out of the way. He was wrong. There were 44 snowstorms the winter of 1866. On the Summit 35 feet of snowfall is average and 60 feet possible. Not long after, there were 40 miles of snowsheds protecting the tracks and preventing passengers from seeing the majestic Summit scenery… but that’s a story for another sign.

…The Brass Plaque Says => THRILL TO RISK AND FIND; KINDLY WITHAL AND A READY HELP. FACING THE BRUNT OF FATE: INDOMITABLE -- UNAFRAID.

…This California State Park is located by Donner Lake and centered around the Pioneer Monument. This bronze memorial depicts three settlers looking West, and stands atop a 22 foot stone pedestal erected on the on the site of one of the cabins used by the infamous Donner Party during the winter of 1846. The park has recreational activities and a visitor's center with a museum chronically the history of the area from the time of the Native Americans to the modern day.
Location of Memorial:
…Truckee, California
Historical Subject:
…The Donner Party were a group of pioneers bound for California during the first wave of Westward expansion but prior to the Gold Rush. The Donner Party deviated from the establish Oregon Trail, opting for a more southernly route that took them through the Sierra Nevada. They became trapped in the mountains beside what is now called Donner Lake during one of the worst winter's in the history of the region. Trapped for months with little food and no chance of rescue, members of the party eventually resorted to cannibalism to survive. Rescue eventually arrived in early spring, and the surviving members of the party settled across the state. Although the rescue parties had burned what remained after the winter, the story spread, and eventually, a memorial was erected on the site of one of the cabins.

EXPLANATION: HUMBOLDT SINK =>
…The Humboldt Sink, is where, because there is no outlet, the Humboldt River comes to an end, and dries up in Nevada’s Fierce Summer Heat,…
….. When Henry Gurr came this way in ~1968, and was astonished because suddenly by the highway, in the middle of this awful awesome desert, was this great expanse of green between abundant water channels!!
…And Henry remembering all this, wanted to see it again!! …. But, no matter how far we drove along I-80, by the areas shown on map labeled “Humboldt Sink”, there was NO GREEN!!! In fact, Henry Was shocked to see just dry, dry, dry, flat-pan. with no dried-up vegetation, or dead trees, to indicate there had ever been any water here!!
..In fact we sent so much attention to searching, Henry forgot to take any photos!!
Thus, The Next Scenes Are Shown, And Explained, In Forthcoming 3 Google Street Views.

Sunday, July 28 2024: … Three Hour N Half After Previous Photo, We Find Our First Evidence Of Hoover Dam, When We See Lake Mead, Along US-95, Traveling Southeast.

…Wikipedia Says =>

Lake Mead is a reservoir formed by the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River in the Southwestern United States. It is located in the states of Nevada and Arizona, 24 mi (39 km) east of Las Vegas. It is the largest reservoir in the US in terms of water capacity. Lake Mead provides water to the states of Arizona, California, and Nevada as well as some of Mexico, providing sustenance to nearly 20 million people and large areas of farmland.[1]
…At maximum capacity, Lake Mead is 112 miles (180 km) long, 532 feet (162 m) at its greatest depth, has a surface elevation of 1,229 feet (375 m) above sea level, has a surface area of 247 square miles (640 km2), and contains 28.23 million acre-feet (34.82 km3) of water.
…The lake has remained below full capacity since 1983 owing to drought and increased water demand.[2][3][4] As of May 31, 2022, Lake Mead held 26.63% of full capacity at 7.517 million acre-feet (9,272,000 megaliters), having dropped in June 2021 below the reservoir's previous all-time low of 9.328 million acre-feet (11,506,000 megaliters) recorded in July 2016, and never returning to that level.[5] By December 2024, following the implementation of water conservation measures, Lake Mead's water levels had risen by 16 feet again over two years.[6]

…Wikipedia Says =>

…Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. Constructed between 1931 and 1936, during the Great Depression, it was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over 100 lives. Bills passed by Congress during its construction referred to it as Hoover Dam (after President Herbert Hoover), but the Roosevelt administration named it Boulder Dam. In 1947, Congress restored the name Hoover Dam.
…Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water, and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium named Six Companies, Inc., which began construction in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques used were unproven. The torrid summer weather and lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned the dam over to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule.
…Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead and is located near Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 30 mi (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction, with 7 million tourists a year.[7] The heavily traveled U.S. Route 93 (US 93) ran along the dam's crest until October 2010, when the Hoover Dam Bypass opened.
