….In the /\ ABOVE /\ view, you see the Iconic U Wis Main Administration Building called “Bascom Hall. Students walking West from State Street Mall (Memorial Library, U Wis Bookstore, & Down Town City Parking Garage, are there), will cross Park Street (and as you see), climb the steps to access Tree Shaded Sidewalks, on both sides of the Grass Covered “Bascom Mall”: ….This “Mall” must date back to the mid 1800’s (and the founding of the University), as judged by the several Older Buildings on both sides: These will be seen in forthcoming photos. This grass covered “Bascom Mall”, being probably the oldest part of the campus, naturally became the campus center, as through years, the campus expanded. ….By email, Dr David Null of the U Wis Archives, was expecting Henry Gurr to arrive ~9:00 am Monday May 23, for Sarah Jennings Vinke Biography Field Research: But to be sure to arrive on time, Henry drove to there Sunday afternoon, so he could become familiar with the streets that accessed to the Archive. And in the process “scoped-out” the Campus to find convenient off- street parking, and “figure the ropes” to the many confusing big city one-way streets, which are obvious collision-makers!

…Having completed
the Exploration-Learn-The-Streets Around, University of Wisconsin Archives, , there was plenty of day left for U Wis Library Research, such as, Books & Article About Sarah Jennings, and her U Wil Thesis Advisor, Professor Moses Stephen Slaughter. Henry did a lot of searching & reading, but most was either already known or not sufficiently relevant for Sarah Vinke Biography. This however does not mean wasted effort. The search must be done, despite the low returns.

~9:00 am MONDAY May 23, Arrive At University of Wisconsin Archives 550 Babcock Dr, Madison, WI 53706. ….By email, Dr David Null Director of the U Wis Archives, was expecting Henry Gurr to arrive. Already on a workroom table near Dr Null’s office, there were several folders of old documents, related to Sarah Jennings Vinke Biography. EXPLANATION => Sarah Jennings, was a Graduate from U Wis Masters (1921) & PhD (1923), new discoveries were expected, in The Archives! Ditto for Sarah’s => U Wis Thesis Advisor (And Sarah’s Major Professor of Latin), Moses Stephen (MS) Slaughter, Archived Materials Found Include => ..A) Campus Staff Telephone Directories for 1921 – 1923, which like current day Telephone Directories, in addition to the Archaic Phone #, also had ….1) Sarah’s Office Rm 267, in Bascom Hall, The UW Main Administration Building, ….2) Sarah’s Rooming House at 234 N Breese Terrace, Madison, Wisconsin. ………Both of these are shown in Forthcoming Photos. ..B) Dr Null was also very resourceful, in digging out Archived Photographs of Old Buildings & Houses, He even found an old photo of house, contemporary to Sarah’s .riving there. This confirmed that the same house (basically un-altered), is still there, and you will see in a Forthcoming Panorama Photo. ..C) Two successive, August 11, 1920, handwritten US Mail Letters => Both addressed to U Wis. Graduate School Dean Sellers, and signed “Sincerely yours, M. S. Slaughter”: ….These letters were written on hotel stationary printed at top “Casaltra, Hancock Point, Maine” , ARE HISTORY IN ACTION!! => ….An excerpt from the first letter: MSS says “I took up another candidate and have secured a very good woman, with five years high school teaching experience, a Sarah Jennings from Iowa. She comes highly recommended and it is probably better to have someone with a teaching experience for these elementary classes… She has had Greek - I don't find it easy to find people with Greek, but I hate to forgo that requirement… I have recommended her for one class, five hours weekly, with a salary of $500.” (( Due to inflation, $500 in 1920 is equivalent to $7800 in 2020.)) : ********* To See An Excerpt From Prof Slaughter’s 2nd Letter, AND For More Information About the Life & Times of “The Divine Sarah” of the book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", Please Click&GoTo => ((After SVBRP Page comes up > At Top > Do > Edit Find > … 1920 handwritten … )) Our Sarah Vinke Biography Resource Page (SVBRP), which includes nearly all of Henry Gurr’s Sarah Vinke Field Research Findings, AND Includes Considerable Additional Extensive Information About Sarah Vinke’s Life & Times. Stop 2: ~7:15 Tuesday May 24, Turn South Onto N. Breese Terrace, From University Avenue, Madison, WI.

Stop 3: ~7:19 am Tuesday May 24, 234 N. Breese Terrace, Madison, WI.

Thus Henry detoured West until finding Walnut St North to “Observatory Drive”, and THEN turn back East toward U Wis Campus.
….This was a lucky break! Pure Serendipity!! This is because => Observatory Drive had (has) A Great Hilltop View Of => Of A Big Lake North of UW Campus & Downtown Madison WI. Indeed LUCKY because this “Detour”, was the ONLY way We-All, would have gotten this Great Photo Op!!

A NOTE ABOUT TRIPLINE: by Henry Gurr,
....TripLine.com Travel Mapping Tool, is a great resource, and reliably & relatively easily helps the persons like myself to create The Map, such as you see above.
....BUT: As you will see, the RED TRIPLINE only sometimes "follows the road" ...And yet to be discovered is => How to better tell TripLine Mapping => "Please Show The RED TRIPLINE 'Following The Road.'!!!"
....So far, the best TripLine Mapping Procedure is => Mark the road ahead, so the resulting RED TRIPLINE will somewhat approximate "The Road"
....Of course it should be understood that Henry Gurr drove the real road shown in the Map, and The RED TRIPLINE, shows only roughly which road Henry Gurr' actually followed.

….As one of the icons on campus, Bascom Hall, at the top of Bascom Hill, is often considered the "heart of the campus." Built in 1857, a decorative dome that once sat atop the structure was destroyed by fire in 1916. The structure has been added to several times over the years. The building currently houses the office of the chancellor and vice chancellors. Bascom Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing building within the Bascom Hill Historic District.

THE AMERICAN CHARACTER

….At the end of the nineteenth century, one of the most popular classes at the University of Wisconsin was Frederick Jackson Turner's course on the American frontier. In those lectures, Turner shared beliefs about our nation's history that would help define what it means to be an American. His "Frontier Thesis" traced strains of American self-reliance and individualism to the hard experience of colonizing the rugged West. Turner's argument became one of the most influential ideas about the American experience ever posed in a classroom.

….NOTE: Sarah Jennings (back in 1921-1923), would have seen Bascom Hall and some of the Obviously Older Buildings on Bascom Mall. In addition (according to Excerpt below), she would have seen the Abraham Lincoln Statue, but perhaps with earlier Stone Bases.
….It is unlikely that she saw The Curved Stone Seat BEHIND the Statue, since it appears that this was a much later addition.

How Abe Came To Be On Bascom, Logan Rains, Library Services Assistant, UW-Madison Archive Logan Rains, Library Services Assistant, UW-Madison Archive, July 5, 2017
…. “The Abraham Lincoln Statue was dedicated in 1909 between North and South Halls, roughly 100 feet away from his current location. It seems the Board of Regents and President Van Hise weren’t in much of a rush to make good on their agreements to Adolph Weinman and the state of Kentucky. It wasn’t until a rededication in 1919 that the proper base was finally affixed. [And apparently moved to its current location.”

Abraham Lincoln Quote, Carved Into Stone SAYS =>
“Let us have faith that right makes might; and in that faith, dare to do our duty”.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN FULL QUOTE & HISTORICAL QUOTE CONTEXT.
….”The Cooper Union Speech” (1860), Presented to the Cooper Institute, New York, New York (27 February 1860), and similar remarks to many of these were made in later speeches elsewhere.

“ … then let us stand by our duty, fearlessly and effectively. Let us be diverted by none of those sophistical contrivances wherewith we are so industriously plied and belabored — contrivances such as groping for some middle ground between the right and the wrong, vain as the search for a man who should be neither a living man nor a dead man — such as a policy of "don't care" on a question about which all true men do care — such as Union appeals beseeching true Union men to yield to Disunionists, reversing the divine rule, and calling, not the sinners, but the righteous to repentance — such as invocations to Washington, imploring men to unsay what Washington said, and undo what Washington did.” ….

….”Neither let us be slandered from our duty by false accusations against us, nor frightened from it by menaces of destruction to the Government nor of dungeons to ourselves. Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.
