Imagine That This Is The “Housing Development” With the “Ridiculous Small Lots.

[ZMM Part IV. In opening of Chapter 27 the Narrator is in the middle of a very bad dream. Then Chris calls: ] “"Dad! Wake up!" .. "I’m awake." I can just barely make out his face in the dawn light. We’re in trees somewhere outside. There’s a motorcycle here. I think we’re in Oregon somewhere. .. "I’m all right, it was just a nightmare." .. He continues to cry and I sit quietly with him for a while. "It’s all right," I say, but he doesn’t stop. He’s badly frightened. .. So am I. .. …. It was just a bad dream." I tell him he’s shivering and should get back into the sleeping bag. .. He does this. "It’s so cold," he says. .. "Yes." By the dawn light I can see the vapor from our breaths. Then he crawls under the cover of the sleeping bag and I can see only my own. .. I don’t sleep. .. The dreamer isn’t me at all. .. It’s Phædrus. .. He’s waking up. .. A mind divided against itself. . . . me . . . I’m the evil figure in the shadows. I’m the loathsome one.. . . . .. I always knew he would come back.. . . . .. It’s a matter now of preparing for it.. . . . . The sky under the trees looks so grey and hopeless. .. Poor Chris.” (End Chapter 27)

Where Is The “Housing Development” With The “Ridiculous Tiny Lots”?
…As already stated, in my 2002 ZMM Route Research, I was unable to locate the Narrator’s Central Oregon Campsite. Thus My photos used to represent the Narrator’s and Chris’s campground were taken at the Corral Springs Campground 34 mi South of Lapine, OR. The camping experience and landscape there was quite similar to the Narrator’s descriptions.
…However, Further Study July 11, 2021, Using Satellite Views => Results in my (Henry Gurr’s) Best Finding =>…The ZMM Narrator’s overnight camp site was at an early construction of the . “Cascade Meadows RV Resort”.

Cold, Grey, Desolate Chicago. “That, for Chris, is where it started.

…[In the opening of ZMM Chapter 28, because of the Narrator’s bad dream (Chapter 27), he is still badly shaken and extremely frightened. The Narrator, sensing the return of the Ghost of Phaedrus, grows more hopeless. The cold, gray, dawn of their Oregon campground reminds him of Phaedrus’s total failure in the cold, gray, & bleak streets of Chicago. The Narrator reconstructs for us the University of Chicago story leading up to his final mental breakdown and hospitalization. His thoughts continue captions next. (Cont. Next)]

To Show this university’s Church and Medieval Academic Origins, this building has ribbed and vaulted high-gothic arches in the darkened entrance way and three Roof Sheltered Recessed Platforms which are prepared places for Statues of the Saints. These features will be shown, in greater detail, in later photos of this building.

The Narrator, thinking of what happened in Chicago, says:] “ .. It won’t happen again. . . . .. I think what I’ll do is head down for San Francisco, and put Chris on a bus for home, and then sell the cycle and check in at a hospital . . . or that last seems so pointless. . . . I don’t know what I’ll do. .. The trip won’t have been entirely wasted. At least he’ll have some good memories of me as he grows up. That takes away some of the anxiety a little. That’s a good thought to hold on to. I’ll hold on to that. .. Meanwhile, just continue on a normal trip and hope something improves. Don’t throw anything away. Never, never throw anything away.” (Cont. Next)

In High Altitude Central Oregon, You May Expect Mid- Summer, Overnight Frost!

Cold out! Feels like winter! Where are we, that it should get this cold? We must be at a high altitude. I look out of the sleeping bag and this time see frost on the motorcycle. On the chrome of the gas tank it’s sparkling in the early sunlight. On the black frame where the sunlight hits it it’s partly turned to beads of water that will soon run down to the wheel. It’s too cold to lie around.” (Cont. Next)

5.8 Miles North of La Pine, OR. Not only the dust, but as you see in my photos, I ALSO experienced FROST when I camped at the "Corral Springs National Forest Campground". This was 2 miles West of OR Rt. 97 about 50 miles South of La Pine. In a desert, the atmosphere is totally free of moisture, making it very transparent to infrared (radiant heat). Thus there is rapid transfer of any heat to outer space. This results in rapid cooling to the point of freezing! In desert regions, prior to refrigerators, this was a common way to make ice! You have to see it to believe it!

Plants Struggle for Survival in the Dry, Powdery Volcanic Dust.
…Exposed to the Intense Sunlight, Hill Tops & Slopes Are Deadly to Plant Life.
… This Is Because the Rare Rain Water Runs Down the Slopes, and the Remaining Moisture Quickly Evaporates. This Leaves only Parched Dust.

…. “Chris is still asleep and we won’t be able to go anywhere until the air warms up. Good time to get the cycle tuned. I work loose the knob on the side cover over the air filter, and underneath the filter withdraw a worn and dirty roll of field tools. My hands are stiff with the cold and the backs of them are wrinkled. Those wrinkles aren’t from the cold though. At forty that’s old age coming on. I lay the roll on the seat and spread it open . . . there they are. . . . like seeing old friends again. .. I hear Chris, glance over the seat and see that he’s stirring but doesn’t get up. He’s evidently just rolling in his sleep. After a while the sun gets warmer and my hands aren’t as stiff as they were. .. I was going to talk about some of the lore of cycle repair, the hundreds of things you learn as you go along, which enrich what you’re doing not only practically but esthetically. But that seems too trivial now, though I shouldn’t say that. .. But now I want to shift into another direction, which completes his story. I never really completed it because I didn’t think it would be necessary. But now I think it would be a good time to do that in what time remains. .
…The metal of these wrenches is so cold it hurts the hands. But it’s a good hurt. It’s real, not imaginary, and it’s here, absolutely, in my hand.

Metaphoric Bridge Connection
… Pay attention to the Narrator’s => “ a worn and dirty roll of field tools. My hands are stiff with the cold and the backs of them are wrinkled. Those wrinkles aren’t from the cold though. At forty that’s old age coming on. I lay the roll on the seat and spread it open . . . there they are. . . . like seeing old friends again. … ”. which precedes his " completes his [Phaedurs] story. I never really completed it because I didn’t think it would be necessary. But now I think it would be a good time to do that in what time remains. “.
…. EXPLANATION: The having good reliable” tools”, “like old friends” …”not imaginary” … ”absolutely real” ..., is what he will (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) need as he tells the VERY difficult story of Phaedrus’ (same as Author Pirsig’s) mental break down at the University of Chicago, even calling it insane.
…ALSO pay attention to the Narrator’s “juxtaposition of => I hear Chris, glance over the seat… ”. because (2nd Metaphoric Bridge Connection) this is what he will need as he tries to work out his current, and growing problem with Chris =>
…“ The answer doesn’t seem to satisfy him. But he can’t seem to say what’s wrong with it.
…A sudden despair wave hits, like that at dawn. I lie to him. That’s what’s wrong.
…"We[says Chris] just keep going and going,"
“ …..

Plants Have a Hard Time Surviving Here.

….“The metal of these wrenches is so cold it hurts the hands. But it’s a good hurt. It’s real, not imaginary, and it’s here, absolutely, in my hand. …….. .. In his pursuit of a concept of Quality, Phædrus kept seeing again and again little paths all leading toward some point off to one side. He thought he already knew about the general area they led to, ancient Greece, but now he wondered if he had overlooked something there. ”…..[Here the Narrator relates (in two pages) 1) Discuss how “Sarah Vinke had put the idea of Quality in his head”. 2) What happened when he arrived at the University of Chicago and 3) How his PhD Thesis on Qualty can not have either Substantive or Objective about it, 4) Plus details about the U. Chicago’s “Committee on Analysis of Ideas and Study of Methods” ] “…. On the machine now everything is done except the oil change. I wake Chris and we pack and go. He’s still sleepy but the cold air on the road wakes him up.” (Cont. Next)

5.8 Miles North of La Pine, OR. In the Narrator’s passage above we note => “It’s real, not imaginary, and it’s here, absolutely, in my hand”. Here again we notice the Narrator’s dependence on “Good old reality.“ The same is absolutely true for all of us. However, like the air surrounding us, we seldom notice it!! This explains why the Narrator repeatedly reminds us of this fact which is an integral part of his Quality Philosophy.

…And As The ZMM Narrator, Repeatedly Reminds Us => …The cutting edge of this instant right here and now is always nothing less than the totality of everything there is.
…Value, the leading edge of reality, is no longer an irrelevant offshoot of structure.
…Value, is the predecessor of structure. It’s the preintellectual awareness that gives rise to it. Our structured reality is preselected on the basis of value, and really to understand structured reality requires an understanding of the value source from which it’s derived.

. This Whole “Reality” Topic Is Important Enough To Have Its Own ZMMQ Page =>
… In the above “ italiced” words from ZMM, notice the Narrator’s emphasis on “ Reality,” Here, to be really sure you get full message, please > (10 each) > Do > Page Top > Edit > Find > real And read the surrounding text.
…From this you should see the importance of “Real, Reality, & Good Old Reality.

The /\ Above /\ Photo Was Taken At The Parking Lot For Lava Butte Cinder Cone Visitor Center, Which Was Experienced On The Way To La Pine, OR.
….((NOTE: The /\ Above /\ Photo Location is ~20 miles prior to La Pine, OR. And the above ZMM Narrative is for Chris & The Narrator’s travel, could practically apply to anywhere along US-97.
…But, since their overnight campsite was 5.8 Miles North of La Pine, OR, the most likely the location for this Narrative is soon after they get back on the road, several miles prior to La Pine, OR for breakfast:
….In the /\ Above /\ Photo, you can see in the distance (by the highway), there was plenty of dark (nearly black) volcanic rock, which happens to be ~1000 feet East of Lava Butte Volcanic Cinder Cone. This was at Lava Butte National Monument located 20 miles prior to La Pine, OR. The Lava Butte Cinder Cone is part of the “Newberry National Volcanic Monument was designated on November 5, 1990, to protect the area around the Newberry Volcano in the U.S. state of Oregon. Address: Bend, OR 97702” From Wikipedia.
….Although volcanic mountains were evident all around at a distance, I did not notice any dark volcanic rock among the trees along the highway. My notes only record spotting volcanic rock at the edge of sidewalks as seen in photo second next.

…Especially Notice That The “Crown” Is Formed At The Precise Intersection Of A “Cross” Formed By Two Lines Of Clouds.
At the time of the photograph, in the line of clouds to the South, there were also developing several dark concentrated areas. At this time, it looked like these “dark areas” were each developing their own “near crowns”.

New Topic: Years ago, many people disposed of waste oil, onto the gravel, as does the Narrator here and other places in ZMM .We now understand why this is unacceptable and, in my opinion, should really never have been done … like smoking and alcoholic beverages.
