Science Building. View of South Side Where All Three Level of the Building Are Seen. The three levels of windows are really Passive Solar Collectors. Our building is oriented so it's longer South side, with its long solar windows, faces the Winter Sun. In the Summer, overhanging shields prevent any of the sun' heat from reaching the South Solar Windows. Many subsequent photos in this album will show how the heat and light of these windows enters the interior of the building. North Side of Our Science Building. As you may deduce, by contrast with the previous photo, this three-story science building is built into a hillside, with it's North face mostly earth embanked! These earth embanked building sides, are thus shielded from the cold winter winds which come mostly from the Northwest in the Aiken area. As is the case for our USCA Science Building, I was similarly involved with the planning of the first phase of the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center Building (RPSEC), where a number Energy Conserving Features were incorporated, as well as Architecturally Integrated Science Demonstrations. Chemistry Laboratory Fume Hoods Are Held High So Students Can See the Full Blackboard On Opposite Side of the Room. Note White and Green Duct Pipes attached to top of hood box. The white pipe carries away the fumes while the green pipe delivers replacement air from outside the building. This reduces HVAC cost since the heated (or cooled) air from the room itself is not "sucked up" the hoods. The replacement air is delivered thru a screen full of holes just under where the sloping top portion of hood sticks out from the side of the hood. A Second Type of Energy Saving Chem Lab Hood Used In The USCA Science Building. If you look carefully, you will see that the front of the hood is covered with a glass pull-down panel. This hood blower fan is regulated so, the lower the glass panel is pulled down, the slower the blower tries to move the air. Net result is less noise and less energy consumption and less loss of heated (or cooled) room air. Science Building, USCA Campus, Aiken, SC. ************************************ (Photo = 4989 ...... WayPt = `000 |w|' 420 ft)
