Their sense of accomplishment is underscored by the Pioneer/Promised Land metaphor and literary allusion that ends the passage. …Of course, Author Robert Pirsig expects us as readers to expect (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) that things will be vastly better in this "Promised Land.”

Ten miles East of Miles City, MT. From here the Pilgrim can turn away from his walk in the pines, and look back into the Yellowstone River Valley. On the way up and just prior to the top, the Pilgrim has a grand view of the barren land back to the East.
