Non-ZMM Book Experiences You Will Have Along the Route
of the Book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
As All These Huge Overhanging Pine Trees Indicate, We Are Now Well Inland and Well Up Into the Coastal Mountains. Although the Pavement Is Smooth and To Fun Drive, Lower Standards of Construction Have Resulted In Sixty Miles of Narrow Very "Curvaceous" Road. This Road does not have any Route Number and thus is a "Secondary Road". I found this out the hard way. Since I was a ZMM Pilgrim, I was droving more slowly. And soon on this stretch of road, a California Speed Demons held heavy on my rear bumper and was honking for me to get out of his way. I spotted what I thought was a good wide place at the berm to pull of the highway. I failed to notice that pavement had a huge drop-off, that exceeded by far, the ground clearance under my car. I came abruptly to a terrible grinding crunching halt! I was stuck!! Three quarters of my car was still on the highway in a dangerous curved place with limited visibility. The wheels spun, the tires smoked, but I could not move!! Many high speed cars were coming at me, but refused to respond to my hand-waves for help. Finally several local drivers came by, were much more courteous, and offered help. While some spontaneously warned on-coming traffic, others helped me jack up the car, but with no success. Fortunately a tow truck happened by, and helped me onto the pavement. What a relief!!! Fortunately nothing seemed to be damaged on my car. What a relief, as my ZMM Research continued!!! On Comptche-Ukiah Road, three mi East of Mendocino, CA. (Photo = 117-1716.JPG )
