WhyNameVentAreteWhy the Domain Name VentureArete.org ?Well … it has a “nice ring” to it!! And combines three words Venture” .. “Arete” .. “Org" .. Each of these three words, have good literal & poetic “connection”, to what is being attempted with our new VentureArete.org Internet Server: Also VentureAreteOrg, will be Home Pages for several NEW organizations, which will be Hosted on this server: Venture Venture has 1) a sense of going forth to an adventure with risk: And as mentioned above, this NEW INTERNET PROJECT will be an adventure, with plenty of risk and uncertainty!!!
2) a Venturing, into our FIRST Internet Server, and
3) for us, a sense of risk & unknown: We have plenty of risk, since many knowledgeable experienced persons have advised against what we are starting: They said that -->”server “maintenance & upkeep, is labor intensive. Two experienced persons stated: "It is better to value of our own time, avoid the hassle, & pay for Professional WebHosting, which is comparatively low cost”!!! Thus we face:
4) a risk of un-due effort, with possibly problematic & uncertain outcome ... and so yes by definition ... the name "Venture", fits!!
5) a nice connection to an earlier project of mine called the “The Venture Grant Aeolian Harp”
Arete’ Arete’, brings to mind two different major ideas (Art & Arete), in Robert Pirsig’s book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” (ZMM). Pirsig’s book shows us how these topics “relate”: … 1) Art, which is emphasized right along with companion Science, and
2) Arete’, which for persons, in Ancient Greece Civilization, was a major life focus …. The Striving for Excellence”!! For the Ancient Greeks, this was The Way, (and The Ideal), For Their Living Life To The Fullest.
3) In ZMM, Pirsig discusses at length, the Ancient Greek Idea of Arete’, and suggest we read the book "The Greeks" by Hutto.
4) The Ancient Greek Idea of Arete’, expresses and illustrates, a very important topic in ZMM, what Pirsig calls Quality. Quality is a major focus for the whole of ZMM!!
6) This sailboat Arete', was writ large in Pirsig’s second book “Lila”: It was the moving home of Phaedrus, the book’s narrator and central character. In addition ---------the Arete' sail boat name, is itself is one of Pirsig's many “Metaphoric Bridge Connections", which Pirsig works-into, both his books, ZMM & LILA.
Click here to read more about what I call “Metaphoric Bridge Connections", with fully explained examples, taken from ZMM.
Org = Organization Yes, I hope VentureArete.org will be the homepages of a new organization, which will “Preserve and Distribute Professors’ Authored Intellectual Materials, such as Documents, Photographs, Drawings, Diagrams, Designs, etc, and most especially their own WebSites.
I propose to call this new organization “Professors Cooperative Permanente”(PCP), with Internet Link => http://VentureArete.org/ProfessorsCooperativePermanente. Based on my (Henry Gurr’s) own experience, the CPC Idea should be an ideal solution, for professors who have (or are likely to), loose their own University Campus’s hosting for their WebSite, Although we have yet found little interest, we hope to get the word out. If you know someone, who could use PCP, please send email to HenryG---USCA.edu
If you are interested in joining us, or want more information, please send an email to HenrySGurr ---gmail.com Here is what Wikipedia says:Arete (/ˈærətiː/; Greek: ἀρετή), in its basic sense, means "excellence of any kind".[1]The term may also mean "moral virtue".[1] In its earliest appearance in Greek, this notion of excellence was ultimately bound up with the notion of the fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one's full potential. The term from Homeric times onwards is not gender specific. Homer applies the term of both the Greek and Trojan heroes as well as major female figures, such as Penelope, the wife of the Greek hero Odysseus. In the Homeric poems, Arete is frequently associated with bravery, but more often with effectiveness. The man or woman of Arete is a person of the highest effectiveness; they use all their faculties--strength, bravery and wit--to achieve real results. In the Homeric world, then, Arete involves all of the abilities and potentialities available to humans. The concept implies a human-centered universe in which human actions are of paramount importance; the world is a place of conflict and difficulty, and human value and meaning is measured against individual effectiveness in the world. In some contexts, Arete is explicitly linked with human knowledge, where the expressions "virtue is knowledge" and "Arete is knowledge" are used interchangeably. The highest human potential is knowledge and all other human abilities are derived from this central capacity. If Arete is knowledge and study, the highest human knowledge is knowledge about knowledge itself; in this light, the theoretical study of human knowledge, which Aristotle called "contemplation," is the highest human ability and happiness."[2] From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arete , which has many interesting Links, including the following interesting "Example of Usage" => Robert Pirsig uses "Arete" as a synonym for Quality, in his book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. This [Quality discussion] includes an extensive discussion of Plato's "Phaedrus" and the historical contrast between Dialectic and Rhetoric. "And what is good, Phaedrus, And what is not good—Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?" Pirsig's line plays off a line in the Platonic dialogue "The Phaedrus which reads: "And what is well and what is badly—need we ask Lysias, or any other poet or orator, who ever wrote or will write either a political or any other work, in metre or out of metre, poet or prose writer, to teach us this?"[12] From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arete Having chosen, VentureArete.org, As Our Domain Name, We Next Had Decided Our How and Where to find our Domain Name Registration Company:As for most any task I’m brand new at, I read-up-on Domain Name Registrations: First on Wikipedia, then followed their links, and then Googled for .... Domain Name Registration ... and then read-up-on various Companies’ WebSites thus found. This search and decision took place, with increasing urgency from January 2013 to late April 2013. By 1 May 2015, I had searched for and studied the offerings of ~12 different Domain Name Registration Companies, some of which were free, or quite low $ cost per year. After a bit of Googling, I began to find good Reviews (and good forum discussions), about Hover.com. Eventually, I chose Hover, because I eventually discovered they are a division or TuCows.com, which I was already familiar with. In fact, over the previous several years, I had investigated, and successfully used Tucows, com as a source of Internet SoftWare DownLoads. Since I knew Tucows was an OK Company, I figured Hover should be OK as well. I was also finding good Hover comments on Forum Discussions. Although Hover's cost, was somewhat higher than average, I decided that their $15/year, for our Domain Name Registration, was reasonable enough, and didn't want to take a chance on other companies less known to me. BUT => When it came to signing up with Hover, to get our Domain Name Registration, I found that it was quite a job to fill in all their huge # of blanks of their Internet Application form!! Whew! But, (like applying for a Credit Card), I suspect that a similar amount of work is needed for nearly ALL Domain Name Registration companies. What is more: You should know that most of what you type for practically ANY Domain Name Registration Company, will be Internet Posted as public information, and will be subsequently added to a variety of readily available webpages!! To see the nature and extent of the Domain Name Registration Information, that you will type into your Registration Application, 1) Click on either of the two links below. 2) Then scroll down the long data list near page bottom. Thus this “quite a job typing”, is just part of signing up for a Domain Name Registration Company, whether Hover.com, or not!! UP-DATE 3 May 2016 Hover Customer Service Agent (Back in May 2014, On the telephone), was very helpful, patient, and knowledgeable, with my questions re how the Hover Yearly Auto-Payment System worked, for our yearly renewal of our Domain Name Registration. Later I called back, to inquire how to set up our server with our Registration information, the agent clearly explained how to do this. One step, I even asked the Agent to do for me, which was gladly done within several minutes after our phone call was completed. Today (3May'16) on the phone, Hover Support AgentTracy Smitten, explained that => My own email address becoming canceled, is reason my WebSite had gone down, and she stayed on the phone, and expertly & quickly helped me update my Hover Account information, and 1 hour later my WebSite http://venturearete.org/ is back on-line, good as ever. Thanks to Tracy Smitten & Hover.com for EXCELLENT service!! PS: I was also impressed by => . .Wikipedia says that "Tucows is the third largest ICANN-accredited registrar in the world and the largest publicly traded registrar." http://domainsigma.com/whois/venturearete.org http://whois.webrankstats.com/whois/venturearete.org CmpsHSG4June13 HSg}RevMstRecnt8Mar15 & 25July15.
