Panorama View of Huge Ventilation Ducts. These ducts move air from the East side of our building to the center, where electric powered centrifugal fans force the ventilation air through subsequent air conditioner spray and filter compartment. This filter compartment is seen at the right of panorama and in other close-up photos. The ducts are color coded as is explained in next photo. This Chart Explains the Colors Used To Color Code the Science Building Ducts and Pipes. The Light Green Ducts carry air that has been collected in one area of the building for filtering and re-use in another part of the building. The pink ducts carry fresh air. The White Ducts, are coated with an acid resist epoxy enamel, are used to carry away the fumes from Chem Labs as well as Men's and Women's Rooms. The White Ducts deliver their air to the exhaust tower on the South side of our science building. You should make note of these colors, so you can interpret the colors you see in these science building albums. General View of Equipment Room Showing Self Guided Tour "Lane" Painted On Floor. Also painted onto the floor on each side of the "Tour Lane", you can see added painted triangles, These triangles mark "tour stops". Each tour stop is numbered, so the visitor can read a brochure description of each piece of equipment to be found at that location. Diesel Engine Co-Generator With Attached AC Power Generator (Red Cylinder Nearest to the Camera.). The Tan Box At Right Houses the Sorption Refrigerator Unit. This Co-Generator Diesel Engine burns natural gas to generate AC Power for our campus. It is most often used to prevent our campus the extra expense of contributing to the power companies "peak load. While the Diesel Engine is in operation, it generates a considerable amount of waste heat that is used to heat domestic hot water and or to operate the Sorption Refrigerator shown at right. This refrigerator uses heat to make cold, and works on the same principle as the household Propane/Kerosene Refrigerators made by the Servel Company. Another View of the Diesel Engine Co-Generator With Attached AC Power Generator. Note coil spring supports under each corner of the Engine's Support Frame. These are vibration absorbing mounts to reduce the vibration of the engine from spreading to the entire building. Most items of machinery in this equipment room have similar vibration reduction supports. Rectangular Red Box above the AC Power Generator Houses Electrical Control Equipment for the generator. View of the Diesel Engine Co-Generator As Seen From the Engine's Front Right Corner. I believe the rectangular box seen at top of the engine holds a reserve supply of engine oil. The long vertical cylinder at left is probably for cooling the engine oil. View of the Diesel Engine Co-Generator As Seen From the Engine's Front Left Corner. The medium sized vertical cylinder at center left probably holds filters for cleaning the engine oil. At upper right a whitish red cylinder curves up into a fiberglass insulating wrap. This is the Engine exhaust pipe which can be quite hot!! The fiberglass insulating wrap protects people and keeps the heat inside the pipe so the heat can be absorbed in a subsequent heat exchanger and thus also used in the Sorption Refrigerator. Note: Beneath the engine (and inside the support frame) you can see the black top-side of an ordinary Automotive Battery with small round white cap. This is probably used to supply the electrical energy needed to "crank" the Diesel Engine and star it, just as is done in an ordinary automobile! Hidden behind the Pipes and Grey Switch Box are the previously mentioned: 1) Diesel Engine Co-Generator, 2) Air Conditioner Chilled Water Pipes, and 4) Centrifugal Refrigerator Compressor. General View of Ventilation System Filter and Conditioning Compartments. The Two Light Green Pipes Bring Partially Used Air From Various Near Ceiling "Collector Funnels" in the Building into this Grey. This box filters and conditions the air to be re-circulated back to the building (blue ducts) by a large centrifugal blower fan which is the circular blue object in the background. A better view if this blower is seen in the next photo. The pink ducts over head, are for fresh air being brought in from the two Air Intake Horns seen by the Greenhouse at the start of this album. As discussed in the previous photo, the Two Light Green Pipes Bring Partially Used Air From Various Collector Funnels in the Building to the Mostly Obscured Grey Box at Right Rear. This box filters and conditions the air to be re-circulated back to the building (pink ducts) by a large centrifugal blower fan which is the circular blue object in the background. More Ventilation System Filter and Conditioning Compartments. This is the largest Conditioning Compartment in our building. It gets its air from a second fresh air intake duct which draws outdoor air from the Equipment Lowering Pit which is just out side the brown roll door seen at the extreme right. The Equipment Lowering Pit, you will remember, was seen in an earlier photos.
