Part II: The Illustrated "Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". Chapters 8 thru 15.

“The Church of the Minorites II" (1926), by Lyonel Feininger.
…. For Phaedrus, This Was An Image Illustrating The University AS => “The Church of Reason.” .
……You Must Imagine This Painting High On the Wall, of the Phaedrus’ Old, Cramped, Dingy Office:

…. “On the way out I open one more door, compulsively. There on the wall I see something which sends a spine-tingling feeling along my neck It’s a painting. I’ve had no recollection of it but now I know he bought it and put it there.
….And suddenly I know it’s not a painting, it’s a print of a painting he ordered from New York and which DeWeese had frowned at because it was a print and prints are of art and not art themselves, a distinction he didn’t recognize at the time. But the print, Feininger’s "Church of the Minorites," had an appeal to him that was irrelevant to the art in that its subject, a kind of Gothic cathedral, created from semiabstract lines and planes and colors and shades, seemed to reflect his mind’s vision of the Church of Reason and that was why he’d put it here. All this comes back now. This was his office. A find. This is the room I am looking for!
"

….About Lyonel Feininger, The Guggenheim Museum Site says => “In Weimar, he [Feininger] worked on paintings such as Church of the Minorities II (1926), whose structural order reflects the organizational principles of classical architecture and of his own musical compositions, especially his fugues for organ. In works like Gelmeroda (1913–36), a series of oil paintings based on the medieval church near Weimar, prismatic planes form dynamic constructions producing a sense of monumentality.
SPELLING NOTE: The Walker Art Center & ZMM say Minorites, and thus is same on ZMMQ Site & Gallery. Other Sites such as Guggenheim spell Minorities.”
….Upon Seeing A (Note Card) Copy Of This Painting, Gennie DeWeese, herself trained & practicing in Abstract Art, immediately said => "This is Abstract Art, BEFORE there WAS 'Abstract Art!!'”.and continued with ~”My abstract art husband would have known Robert Pirsig was pretty unusual, sharp, & interesting, just because he owned a copy of this painting!!”
