A Hay Stack Like This Is Almost Never Seen These Days. Instead In This Area of N.D., You Will See Huge Stacked Hay Bales in the Shape of Monster Buildings!
[[[Clearly Pirsig, Chris, John and Sylvia have experienced perfect weather, but this is not what the ZMM Narrative tells us!!]]] “ .... the storm clouds are everywhere and almost upon us. .. John and I have discussed the situation in Breckenridge and decided to keep going until we have to stop. .. That shouldn’t be long now. The sun is gone, the wind is blowing cold, and a wall of differing shades of grey looms around us. It seems huge, overpowering. The prairie here is huge but above it the hugeness of this ominous grey mass ready to descend is frightening. We are traveling at its mercy now. When and where it will come is nothing we can control. All we can do is watch it move in closer and closer. .. Where the darkest grey has come down to the ground, a town that was seen earlier, some small buildings and a water tower, has disappeared. It will be on us soon now. I don’t see any towns ahead and we are just going to have to run for it. “
Just after crossing the border into North Dakota and slightly South of Milnor, ND. Mr. Pirsig’s caption (2002): "Haystack at rest stop N.D. 1st day--Same location as A." [[[Notice Chris's red hair. You will also see this color in several later photos and apparently this was his actual hair color. Also note jackets; it must have been chilly cycle riding, despite a whole day of crystal clear sky and intense sun as you see here. This fits since the ZMM Narrator tells us the next morning is clear and very cold. Previous two photos have more information and how to view map of this location which is on the opposite side of the road from the previous two photos.]]]
