General View of Visitor Center John Day Fossil Beds National Park OR. On Rt19 3 mi North of Rt26 six mi West of Dayville, OR. Behind this cooling protective wall of trees is a grand old Victorian home located on .... believe-it-or-not .... a genuine Eastern Oregon semi-desert cattle ranch! The ranch homestead buildings are now used as the park visitor’s center. The close packed, well-irrigated trees are there for a purpose! The visitor appreciates this when arriving in a mid-summer mid-afternoon blazingly hot sun! I’m sorry I could not get a better view, but the next two pictures will help you understand what this grand home looks like. (Photo = 112-1296_IMG.JPG)

An Interior View of Visitor Center John Day Fossil Beds National Park OR, shows old photographs of the Pioneers that built this home. Later owners, themselves Quality persons, were interested in the ancient biology these rocks revealed. They donated this house with the surrounding land to the National Parks Service for a museum, and a place where others could share the discoveries here. Don't miss it! Somehow electrical power gets all the way into this desert region, so it is wonderfully cool inside. (Photo = 112-1294_IMG.JPG)

Although Wild, I Was Able To get Quite Close To This Doe Hiding In the Shadows. This calm deer by the road, just out of Mitchell OR, seemed to feel safe when hidden in the shade. I was ignored while I waited for her to move into the sunlight for a better photo. But ultimately she suddenly ducked into the brush before I could get my shot. This “Crown in the Sky” Is A Truly Amazing Cloud Formation!
I first realized the presence of this amazing cloud shape as I was adjusting the entire scene in the camera view-finder to take a photograph of the nearby ZMM Restaurant in La Pine, I suddenly realized to look more closely at the crossing of two lines of clouds! Eventually I will post the two successive 360 degree panoramas I took of the time evolution of this phenomenon.

La Pine, OR.

Yup That's Me, Henry Gurr, At Crater Lake. The Plaque Text Describes Mount Mazama, the full sized volcanic cone mountain that exixted b=here before the giant explosion that blew the mountain away! This left this huge crater that eventually filled with water.
I was trying to take a photo of this sign, and was on my tiptoes in an attempt to “get a good angle” so the whole sign would be in focus. A very tall gentleman asked if he could take the shot for me. I naturally accepted his offer! Then I immediately realized this would be a good time and place to jump into the shot. As part of my ZMM Research, I always attempted to photograph the text of the more interesting tourist information signs. More information about Mt. Mazama is in my Gallery Photos for Part IV.

An Interesting Pair of Arched Bridges by City Park. I needed a cool place to rest, eat lunch and study maps. So when I saw a wider place in the busy highway, I pulled over and walked down the bank to the river edge. Cool! Nice!! Grants Pass, OR. 114-1497_IMG.JPG

Agriculture Inspection Station When Entering California from Oregon. To make this building, in the middle of nowhere, the highway department used local timber. But they had to use giant redwood logs to form the support structure, because of the absence of sawmills. I took the time to photograph these logs visible inside this building.
