North Along Colfax Avenue as We Arrive at the Former Home of John and Sylvia Sutherland. "Now we can go back for another eight years .... " 2649 South Colfax Ave, Minneapolis, MN. This quiet, tree-lined avenue certainly looks like, and is, very nice place to live! This great feeling is boosted by our great experience of a blue sky, fresh air, and a bright sunlit morning. We are set in a mood of joy to be here! However in ZMM, John and Sylvia Sutherland, even while on vacation at the DeWeese home in Cottonwood Canyon South of Bozeman Montana, they cannot forget the ugliness and congestion of the big, industrial city that surrounded their home here in Minneapolis! Despite the surrounding natural un-spoilt beauty of the pastures, mountains, and forests in Montana, they remain very much aware of their pained existence back home: The narrator reports John saying despairingly "Now we can go back for another eight years on Twenty-six-forty-nine Colfax Avenue.". In fact, they long for the time when they can move from their city home to the openness of the country. Eventually, while their three children are still living with them, this became possible. In my "John Sutherland Interview DVD", John discusses their experienced in the open country living not too far from Minneapolis. Notice: If you are the person now living in this home please contact me. Anyone having (or needing) more information, please contact me. I want to hear from you. ************************************ (Photo = Summer2006 0162 ...... ZMM Page = 143 ...... WayPt = -003w)

Sylvia says mournfully, "Let’s not talk about that." 2649 South Colfax Ave, Minneapolis, MN. In the Summer2006, this house was empty and for rent, so we were delighted to used this chance to take photos all around, of this Fantastic Multicolored Victorian architecture in bright sun! We were excited to be able to experience the high Quality of this old home! In fact we were excited by our whole morning in Minneapolis! 2649 Colfax Ave, Minneapolis, MN. Yes, There It Is In Gold "2649" In the Fancy Carved Wood Over the Door. "Now we can go back for another eight years on Twenty-six-forty-nine Colfax Avenue." South Colfax Ave, Minneapolis, MN. In this carving, and a similar carving over the front door (3rd photo next), we see evidence of the extra care of high Quality craftsmen and architectural design. This is also evident in the extra care of the current owners. They make sure these carvings are fully cleaned, preserved, and done in natural varnish. Ditto for the imaginative colors in which the house has been painted. New topic: It took me several minutes to adjust the telephoto of my camera to get this shot. Due to the very late evening darkness (upon my earlier 2002 visit here), this photo had to be brightened. I used the very handy (and free download) Irfanview Photo Editor to do this. More information and my recommendation, see my "Software We Use" page, a link off my home page. ************************************ (Photo = 102-0250b ...... ZMM Page = 0143 ...... WayPt = -003w)

Close Up of Beautiful Carving Over Front Door of The Former Home of John and Sylvia Sutherland. "[Now we can go back for another eight years .... ]" 2649 South Colfax Ave, Minneapolis, MN. Note pineapple and grapes in carving. a pineapple is even formed into the surface of the glass light fixture! Also note Gargoyles, complete with large claws, formed into right and left sides of carving! Click photo to get the largest view for close study of detail. WebPage http://www.waterburyregion.com/visit/pineapple.html says: The universally recognized signature of hospitality is the pineapple. How did this prickly yet sweet exotic fruit become the symbol of welcome? Christopher Columbus brought this unusual fruit back to Europe in 1493 after his travels through the Caribbean islands. ..... As the popularity of pineapples grew, hostesses would go to great lengths to outdo each other in preparation and presentation of this rare treat. Extravagant dinners for friends were held with the pineapple as the center of visual honor. Guests were honored by the fact that the hostesses spared no expense for their dining pleasure. By this manner, the pineapple became the image of welcome, good cheer, graciousness, warmth and conviviality. .. A different spin [probably also true] on the pineapple tale purports that when colonial sea captains returned from their travels, they often displayed a pineapple at their door or upon their gates as a sign that they were home and welcoming friends to their hearth for food and drink and good company. ************************************ (Photo = Summer2006 0149 ...... An Even Closer View of Beautiful Carving Over Front Door of The Former Home of John and Sylvia Sutherland. "[Now we can go back for another eight years .... ]" 2649 South Colfax Ave, Minneapolis, MN. An excerpt from the very long WebPage http://www.levins.com/pineapple.html says: Pineapple as Artistic Motif It is hardly surprising that this [pineapple] communal symbol of friendship and hospitality also became a favorite motif of architects, artisans and craftsmen throughout the colonies. They announced the hospitality of a mansion with carved wood or molded mortar pineapples on its main gate posts such as those shown here at a home in historic Haddonfield, New Jersey. They incorporated huge copper and brass pineapples in the weather vanes of their most important public buildings. They sculpted pineapples into door lintels; stenciled pineapples on walls and canvas mats; wove pineapples into tablecloths, napkins, carpets and draperies; and cast pineapples into metal hot plates. There were whole pineapples carved of wood; pineapples executed in the finest china kilns; pineapples painted onto the backs of chairs and tops of chests. ...... ************************************ (Photo = Summer2006 0150 ......
