Part III: The Illustrated "Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" Chapters 16 thru 26.

Chris And The ZMM Narrator Arrive At The Brownlee Campground After Dark, Which This /\Above/\ July 2024 Photo, Taken At The Brownlee Campground. Partly Simulates, Their After Dark.

The ZMM Narrator Says =>
….[“We follow the headlight beam down a secondary road toward Oregon to a little sign saying "BROWNLEE CAMPGROUND," which appears to be in a draw of the mountains. In the dark it’s hard to tell what sort of country we’re in. We follow a dirt road under trees and past underbrush to some camper’s pull-ins. No one else
seems to be here. When I shut the motor off and we unpack I can hear a small stream nearby. Except for that and the chirping of some little bird there’s no sound.]

…."I like it here," Chris says.
…"It’s very quiet," I say.
…"Where will we be going tomorrow?"
…"Into Oregon." I give him the flashlight and have him shine it where I’m unpacking.
…"Have I been there before?"
…"Maybe, I’m not sure."
…I spread out the sleeping bags, and put his on top of the picnic table. The novelty of this appeals to him. This night there’ll be no trouble sleeping. Soon I hear deep breathing that tells me he’s already asleep.
” ]
…."I wish I knew what to say to him. Or what to ask. He seems so close at times, and yet the closeness has nothing to do with what is asked or said. Then at other times he seems very far away and sort of watching me from some vantage point I don’t see. And then sometimes he’s just childish and there’s no relation at all.
…Sometimes, when thinking about this, I thought that the idea that one person’s mind is accessible to another’s is just a conversational illusion, just a figure of speech, an assumption that makes some kind of exchange between basically alien creatures seem plausible, and that really the relationship of one person to another is ultimately unknowable. The effort of fathoming what is in another’s mind creates a distortion of what is seen. I’m trying, I suppose, for some situation in which whatever it is emerges undistorted. The way he asks all those questions, I don’t know.

FATHER & SON RELATIONSHIP:
…The previous photo discussed => “The ZMM Narrator’s Seeming Useless, Out of Place Seeming Pointless Phrase, such as, “ chirping of some little bird … there’s no sound.
ANB BECAUSE => In ZMM, There Are NO Useless, Wasted Words! We know to watch for special meaning, as follows
,…Here is a place in ZMM where Chris is trying to ”reach out” to his Dad. But The Narrator only replies with ~”Non-Answers”, and after Chris is asleep, tells us he knows he is not communicating with Chris!!
. Thus the phrase => “The Chirping Of Some Little Bird … There’s No Sound.”… is to be understood as => Chris is trying to communicate ,,.. but there is practically no communication back from the Father.
...In the above ZMM Passage, we see how again and again Chris tries to “reach out” to his Dad by asking a series of questions. AND we see how at best, the Narrator’s answers to Chris are Vague Non-Answers.
…. In Previous Photos, we have discussed, how repeatedly the Narrator does not do what Chris wants. For example, in a previous photo at Colgate Lick Rest Area, Lochsha River Canyon ID, the Narrator does not go with Chris to look at the Mineral Salt Lick. They might have both together shared in discovering the old mineral springs, and salt lick mentioned, and all kinds of interesting animal tracks around it.
…Now add to this, in the above ZMM Passage, we see the Narrator’s failure to really constructively respond to Chris saying => ”I Like It Here.” , followed by a series of questions about being at this campground and plans for the next day.
Thus, At Best, The Narrator’s Answers To Chris Are Vague Non-Answers! AND, the Narrator makes no resolve to do better, but makes an excuse =>
..."that the idea that one person’s mind is accessible to another’s is just a conversational illusion, just a figure of speech, an assumption that makes some kind of exchange between basically alien creatures seem plausible, and that really the relationship of one person to another is ultimately unknowable..
.
…. At this point we should suddenly realize **AHA**, the significance of the Narrator’s => The Chirping Of Some Little Bird … Again, as mentioned previously => This is Author Robert Pirsig’s way of telling us HE KNOWS =>
That The Narrator’s communication with Chris, is failing, and he doesn’t know what to do about it. ….Continued: Next Photo.
