…At first, this mountain may have been named “Beartooth” by the Native Americans, but for any traveler in these mountains, this distinctive Twin Mountain shape, is a necessary Landmark. Of course, when Surveying Teams came in, the highest mountains, including the highest of the “Beartooth” Twin Peaks, would quickly get a Brass Surveyors Benchmark..

…AFTER the above Blue Link comes up => At left edge, you will see “Pilot Peak and Index Peak”, which are prominent neighboring mountains in the Absaroka Range in Wyoming, visible from the Beartooth Highway. Pilot Peak is the sharper, taller summit at 11,699 feet, while Index Peak is just over 1,000 feet shorter, "Index" was formerly taller than Pilot Peak but, due to weak rock, was diminished by an earthquake in 1888.
...Both peaks are iconic landmarks along the Beartooth Highway and are frequently photographed together.
