By Looking Carefully, In This Panorama, You Can See Four Golden California Bears Guarding All four Corners of This Four Lane Highway Bridge Over the Klamath River. The ZMM Route first encounters the headwaters of the Klamath River, in Oregon, soon after Crater Lake, where it flowed into Klamath Lake , and soon went over Klamath Falls. The Klamath River here, happens to be where the Cost Highway, California Route 101, heads inland. A close up of one of the Golden Guard Bears is posted in my Non-ZMM Experiences Album, a companion album in this Gallery of Photos. Rt 101 crosses Klamath River, near Klamath CA.. ************************************ (Photo = 115-1599+8 ...... ZMM Page = 328 ...... WayPt = 429x 0091ft)

Wind Swept Shrubs, Trees and Beautiful Vistas, But Chris and the Narrator Are Not Able To Enjoy It! [For the Narrator and Chris, the weather has suddenly turned very foggy and cold. It’s so cold Narrator has to put on a coat and here wants Chris to likewise. The Narrator's one page discussion of their resulting contest of wills ends with:] “He looks down at the ground bitterly, and puts his warm clothes on. Then we’re back on the machine and moving down the coast again. .. I can imitate the father he’s supposed to have, but subconsciously, at the Quality level, he sees through it and knows his real father isn’t here. In all this Chautauqua talk there’s been more than a touch of hypocrisy. Advice is given again and again to eliminate subject-object duality, when the biggest duality of all, the duality between me and him, remains unfaced. A mind divided against itself.“ One mile North of Rockport, CA. ************************************ (Photo = 116-1691+1 ...... ZMM Page = 363 ...... WayPt = 457w 0120ft)

The Fog Has Momentarily Cleared, the Sun and White Puffy Clouds Are Out …. SUDDENLY FLOWERS!! ““ Sixteen mi South of Crescent City, CA. Only after I start taking my 8 photos for the panorama, do I realize this is, traffic wise, a dangerous place. My notes say I took the photos too rapidly, and may have messed up the GPS reading. ************************************ (Photo = 115-1586+8 ...... ZMM Page = 328 ...... WayPt = 426x 0357ft)

Cows and Flowers: A South East View From the Old Road To Arcata. We Are Further Inland Now, Thus More Warmth and Less Fog. Second Rt101 exit for Mckinlyville, CA. Every time possible I sought and explored the older routes that the Narrator and Chris may have followed. Here in this time forgotten by-way, a “back way into” a small California Town, I discover moments of Quality. ************************************ (Photo = 116-1623+3 ... ZMM Page = 344 ...... The Road Here Goes Inland. The Narrator and Chris Would Have Been Much Warmer, Had there Been No Rain as you see here. “(Start Chapter. 30.)At Arcata we enter a small diner, cold and wet, and eat chili and beans and drink coffee. .. Then we are back on the road again, freeway now, fast and wet. We’ll go to within an easy day’s distance from San Francisco and then stop.“ Rt101 turn off on Rt299 into Arcata, CA. I did not attempt to locate a 1960’s style restaurant in Arcata. For this and several later photos, I’m sorry not to be able to always show photos appropriate for the Narrator’s passages describing driving at dark and in the rain. New topic: The Narrator says “within an easy day’s distance“. Just a few miles back from here, I saw a sign that said “298 Miles to San Francisco” This is one day’s drive by Narrator’s typical travel standards already mentioned several times in ZMM. As best I can determine (by “best fit”), the Narrator’s next motel is at (or near) Fortuna CA, some 25 miles further South. Of course, I use the Narrator’s local scenery descriptions both before and after his next motel (page 359). So, in keeping with the factual underpinnings of ZMM, next Motel is “within an easy day’s distance“, in keeping with the factual accuracy and realism of the story!! ************************************ (Photo = 116-1628+1 …... Turning Off Of Rt 101 and Just After Crossing Historic Ferndale Bridge, We See the Fields In the Valley On the Way to Ferndale California. “ “ =Three mi East of Ferndale, CA. Ferndale Bridge, still in good shape for full sized trucks, is apparently one of the first reinforced concrete bridges to have been put into service. “This historic bridge was built in 1911 and it serves as the beloved gateway to Ferndale, California.” Detour in new browser frame for seven photos of this historic landmark.

Typical Scenery In a Red Wood Forested Mountainous Area Along Rt 101: ““ Near Phillipsville, CA. H ere we are somewhat inland from the ocean, so it is sunny and warmer. But this is still close enough to the Pacific Ocean , for fog and mist and rain from the (relatively cold ocean) to grow these forests, especially giant redwoods. There are so many that this is called the Redwood Highway. I had wanted to get breakfast in Weott CA, several miles back as did the Narrator and Chris, but found it closed. My extended ZMM Research there, combined with no food, and the driving to here on an empty stomach, as resulted in the beginnings of a headache. So I stopped here to rest and get breakfast. This particular stopping place was chosen because I could use the “uphill” to help stop the car with minimal use of the brakes and “make use” of the energy already invested in my moving car (Quality) AND here was a relatively wide somewhat level safe place to get off the pavement (Quality), AND the stern speed limit warning sign seen in the photo, unconsciously, may have been “material” in this exact stopping spot, since it realized a nice panorama of the forests & view (Quality). The food and coffee, as always, helped relieve the headache. Now as I was feeling better (Quality), and getting ready to go, I realized this was as good a spot as any (Quality) for a panorama! I suddenly saw that speed warning sign could provide contemplation, for you (Quality). Later my notes say “OH WOW” at the new vistas seen, as I traveled on down the road!! ************************************ (Photo = 116-1646+7 ...... ZMM Page = 361 ...... WayPt = 446x 0562ft)

All Viewed From The ZMM Narrator’s “A High Point ”
There It Is! Just As The ZMM Narrator Stated! From Left To Right =>
…A Housing Tract Home, The Pacific Ocean Obscured By Fog, Caspar Bay, OLD Rt-1 Highway, The Narrator’s Beach, Close Up Of Coastal Shrubs, Curved Road Called “The Sharp Switch Back” (OLD Rt-1 Highway), Curved Road (In Foreground See) Metal Reflector Post, Various Roads, And Then Full Circle, Back To The Housing Tract, …Note Road At Immediate Right of Beach => This Is A Portion Of Road From Caspar, CA Which Brought The Narrator and Chris To This High Vantage Point.
…“ …. [but now is surrounded by =banks of fog.] For a moment I see a distant break in the fog where some people rest in the sand, but soon the fog rolls in and the people are obscured.”
NOTE1:
…Author Robert Pirsig’s Map X, would be (beyond the weeds) close to the above mentioned Metal Reflector Post. this is as best we know, the location of Mr Pirsig's “Climax Scene”. … In 1968, Coastal Shrubs probably forced Chris and the Narrator to be on rough grass & weeds immediately at the Pavement Edge.
NOTE2
…Concerning the above mentioned “fog”. The climate in most of California is generally dry and sunny all day every day, unless a storm has come in.
…However, due to the Pacific Ocean being relatively cold, fog forms over the ocean water. This is seen in at left edge of /\ Above /\ Panorama, beyond the Housing Tract Home.
…Although not seen in /\ Above /\ Panorama, relatively cold ocean fog can extend for miles inland. This fog & cold was a miserable experience for the ZMM Narrator & Chris most of the time they were near the ocean coast.
…Sometimes this cold ocean fog, extending for miles inland, can “lift up”, so it just looks like a cloud overcast day, with no sun. This is what you see the seen in /\ Above /\ Panorama, as you view the panorama to right of the Ocean fog beyond the Housing Tract Home.
NOTE3
…Concerning the ZMM Narrator’s => “ break in the fog … but soon … obscured.”
…We as readers should (Metaphoric Bridge Connection) be thinking about & looking for meanings of “brief opening” symbolized by the fog.
…And for Chris & the Narrator, hope new possibilities may open up, but aware that right away these possibilities might “close up”.
ZMM Narrator’s “High Point”, Point Cabrillo Dr, about one travel mile Southwest of Caspar, CA. Author Robert Pirsig sent me a map of his ZMM “Climax” location, so I could be here and take these photos of record.
This Area Was Probably Once Mostly Covered With Coastal Shrubs.
… But now is an Ocean Side Housing Tract, as you see in the /\ Above /\ Panorama.
The Eight Photos For This /\ Above /\ Panorama
…Have been extensively used to illustrate the series of photos for the ZMM Narrative, where the Narrator and Chris finally achieve an astounding and unexpected climatic break-thru!! Our High Vantage Point In Day Break Light, Reveals Dry California Mountain Ridges In the Distance, All Around Us. [Note: The travel narrative in ZMM, implies that the Narrator and Chris would have come thru inland hills like these in mid afternoon. I apologize for not having a proper photo to show this.] “After a while he says, "Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?" .. "If you take care of it." .. "What do you have to do?" "Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me." .. "Will you show me all of them?" .. "Sure." .. "It is hard?" .. "Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard." "Oh." …. After a while I see he is sitting down again. Then he says, "Dad?" .. "What?" .. "Will I have the right attitudes?" .. "I think so," I say. "I don’t think that will be any problem at all. And so we ride …. “ On Orr Hot Springs Road, five miles to Ukiah, CA. Wikipedia says: Ukiah [city & county & valley] sit in an area known as the Yokayo Rancho, one of several Spanish land grants in Alta California. The Yokayo grant that makes up the majority of the Ukiah valley takes its name from the Pomo word meaning "deep valley". Ukiah being an anglicized form of [the Pomo word] Yokayo. Pomo people are the speakers of a linguistic branch of Native American people of Northern California. ************************************ (Photo = 117-1735+7 ...... ZMM Page = 372 ......
