This shows what typical older homes in Dallas Center looked like and thus illustrates what Sarah's home might have been like.
Their census record indicates their rented dwelling is among thirteen others, on 15th Street, but only an “X” written where a house address number should have been. (It’s likely the house number system for this small town had not yet been set up. It wasn’t needed.) But, since their family’s data appears midway in successive sequence among with the data of other family’s on 15th Street, AND since this street is only ten blocks long, we can infer their house must have been about half way along. Old maps, Google Street View, and my driving this street, did not reveal any likely candidates. Further research is needed

Sarah Said Her Students Called Her Place At The Evergreen Apartments, “Oxford, The Home Of Lost Causes”: Photo of The Evergreen Apartments, 217 W. Koch Bozeman MT.
The 1930 US Census lists Sarah W. Jennings as renting an apartment here, with a listing of the various occupants of four other nearby apartments. By our best reconstruction of Sarah's series of residences, she lived here until 1932 when she married Lewis Vinke. Newspapers and other documents say that Sarah moved then to Billings MT.
These apartments, were constructed back in 1918, when as we see, Round Rocks from Mountain Streams, were used in the Foundation.
A Bozeman Historic Spotlight Internet Page says: “Martin continued investing in real estate. In 1905, he commissioned the three-story Michigan Block (where Wild Joe’s is now located), which was named for the Martin’s home state. Rather than business suites, as in the Martin Block, Martin installed apartments on the second and third floor of the Michigan Block. Martin’s other investments in rental residences included the Clark Apartments on South Grand in 1914, which were given Mrs. Martin’s maiden name and Evergreen Apartments, at West Koch and South Third, in 1918.

By the time of the 1940 Census, Sarah Jennings Vinke, age forty-five and widowed, had moved and was a guest in the Armstrong Hotel, Fort Collins, Colorado by April when the census was enumerated, along with many other guests and lodgers. She was recorded as having been, in 1935, living in Billings Montana, attended school in the previous month, and working for pay thirty-five hours per week, occupation teacher at a State College, and working forty-three weeks the previous year, and for this she earned $1935, and earned wages from other sources. Google Street View currently shows the front of Fort Collins’s Armstrong Hotel, as a medium size, three story brick building, with top two floors for guest rooms, and street level lined with shops, restaurants, and stores The Armstrong, on College Avenue, at the southern edge of the Ft Collins downtown business district, is North West of the center of Colorado State University campus, requiring some 12 blocks to walk between.
In an interview, Mr Henry Campbell (See his discussion this page), said that Sarah (~1943) had her piano, at Ft Collins. This would suggest that by then, she had moved to an apartment, or home, having more room than the Armstrong Hotel. Or perhaps back then, the Armstrong Hotel had several room suites, as it does now saying “accommodate a longer stay …. a kitchenette, full-sized stove, sink, kitchen accessories …. feel like a spacious studio apartment”. Sarah’s teaching at Colorado State continued, until she returned to Montana State U Bozeman as the Chair of English Department, in 1945.

The Clark Apartments, 616 S Grand Ave, Bozeman MT.
We have tried to confirm Sarah’s and Louis’ living locations, by formal search requests to the Gallatin County Clerk & Recorder: “No records were found”. Similarly, in hopes that various Law Court Documents would show addresses, a similar request was sent, also for Sarah & Louis, to Gallatin County Clerk of District Court: “No records were found”. These two negative results, although disappointing, are constructive and important, in that it shows that Saran & Louis kept themselves out of sight of the law, and for some reason had no property in Gallatin County.
Additionally, because the 1950 Census, by USA Law, will not be publically available until April, 2022, we are not able to independently confirm two addresses coming from Sarah herself: The fact that Sarah had her, US Mail Address made up into a rubber-stamp device, meant that she considered the following two address to be ~ long term.
A) One of Sarah’s rubber-stamp-printed US Mail return address, at 616 South Grand Street. Bozeman Research Article, tells the history the Clark Apartments, constructed in 1914, at the above address, even showing an excellent photo: Dennis Gary, seeing this photo, as well as good Google Street Views, says he “does not remember this 616 S Grand Ave, Apartment as Sarah's.” The Clark apartments, are North East of MSU’s Montana Hall, requiring approximately 12 blocks to walk between. Putting together all know facts about Sarah’s living quarters, it is most logical that Sarah lived in the Clark, sometime during her first years in Bozeman, from 1923 up to 1932, when she moved with husband Louis to Billings. … Relevant to Sarah’s daily teaching commuting to MSU’s Montana Hall, Mr Gary remembers that “Back when I was going up to campus from the Phi Sig house on South Wilson, there was a regular motor bus going up South Grand to the campus.” Historical records mention a street car running on S. Grand, and show phots Bozeman’s Main Street in the early 1900's with electric trolleys on tracks.

Close-Up: The Clark Apartments, 616 S Grand Ave, Bozeman MT.
In this Close-Up Google Street View, If you look with a magnifier you can almost make our the house # 616 over the door. Notice the Round Rocks from Mountain Streams, Used in Foundation & Porch Pillars. A Bozeman History Site gives the following
“Some new apartments and duplexes appeared in the south end of Bozeman during this period. The building at 219-221 West Arthur Street provides a simple but elegant example of the streamlined Moderne style. The two-story stucco duplex with flat roof has a symmetrical facade with an outset enclosed entry. On either side of the front steps is a metal banister designed with three concentric arcs. The porthole windows in the front doors mirror the pair of porthole windows in the second story above. Pairs of two-over two windows are set in the corners. The horizontal lines of these window divisions mimic the horizontal bars in the portholes as well as the lines of the metal railing above the outset entry. “

The Lindley Concrete Block Factory
[Concrete] Building Blocks for Bozeman
by Courtney Kramer Monday Jun. 1st, 2015
Deed research hints at the possibility that Svorkmoe partnered with E. Broox Martin to construct the Clark Apartments, at 616 South Grand Avenue, of concrete block in 1914. Svorkmoe constructed a number of Queen Anne and Craftsman style homes as speculative investments along South Grand Avenue between 1890 and 1910; he purchased the site of the Clark Apartments in 1898.
Martin, whose business partnerships with Nelson Story involved him in banking and real estate development, capitalized on Bozeman’s growth during this time period by constructing residential housing for the working class, including the Evergreen Apartments at South Third and West Koch. The trolley line on South Grand Avenue provided public transportation to the pea canneries developed on the north east side of town in the 1910’s.

Sarah Vinke’s Piano Made By The Adam Schaaf Piano Company, Chicago.
…Photo by Patricia (Pinky) Bryson Henry who now owns Sarah’s piano. Patricia’s parents Tata and Kenny Bryson of Bozeman, MT, were close friends of Sarah and purchased the piano for their daughter Patricia to practice on as student taking piano lessons.
…In an email, Jul 30, 2016, which had this photo as an attachment, Patricia said =>
…“A loving shot of the piano with a vase of sweet peas, and a picture done by Bob DeWeese of me and Tina, back in the day, which he gave me in return for my having given her flute lessons. There is also a beautiful silk screen of pussy willows by Gennie DeWeese in the background.”
NOTE:
Ms Henry also included a photo of Sarah’s address, which had been Rubber Stamped, onto one of the Pieces of Music. =>
MRS SARAH J. VINKE
616 SO, GRAND AVE.
BOZEMAN, MONTANA
…This is the address of Bozeman’s “Clark Apartments”, that Bozeman Piano Teacher Henry Campbell said was one of the places that Sarah lived and had her piano there. Mr. Campbell knew Sarah and her piano very well. Also the 1950 US Census gave this address for Sarah April 1950.

White Duplex Homes, 521 West Arthur Street, Bozeman MT, just a bit over three blocks directly East of Montana State University’s Montana Hall.
As already mentioned in a previous photo Concerning Clark Apartments, Sarah had her, US Mail Address made up into a rubber-stamp device, meant that she considered both the her address there to be ~ long term. Similar to Clark Apartments, a second rubber-stamp-address shows 521 West Arthur Street, just a bit over three blocks directly East of MSU’s Montana Hall. It would seem probable that Sarah, would choose this address (actually at the very edge of MSU Campus), since in her later years she was getting older, and had difficulty walking. Putting together all know facts about Sarah’s living quarters, it is most logical that Sarah lived here, sometime during her years after her return from Ft Collins to Bozeman. These years would be from 1945 up to ~1968, when she moved to Florida, to be with her sister. … Current day Google Map pinpoints the 521 West Arthur Street location, where Google Street View (GSV), reveals a white duplex. Of the several GSV perspectives available, the best view shows the duplex front, where on the steep roof, are two (matched size), sharp pointed dormer roof peaks, below which, two entry doors, are over white concrete steps: These are the sidewalk entrances, for each half of the duplex. A rotation of the GSV image, shows the duplex is on a corner lot, at the intersection of, sure enough as seen on the two green sign, “Arthur St” and “S 6th St”. Mr Gary, was emailed the best links for 4 GSV perspectives, with sentences of his 2009 memories saying “duplex” an “Arthur Street”, and asked look close again. He replies “Again, I am uncertain, but it does resemble the duplex I mentioned.”

A Really Great Art Deco White Duplex Homes, West Arthur Street, Bozeman MT, just a bit over five blocks directly East of Montana State University’s Montana Hall.
In my first attempts, using Google Street View (GSV), to look for Sarah’s address 521 West Arthur St house, I had no clue which way to “fly” GSV along Arthur St, nor how far. So I kept click-jumping GSV, ahead along Arthur some 20 houses, when I found this Art Deco Duplex, I sooo… much wanted it to be Sarah’s!! BUT, as you can see the above the doors this is address 221 & 219 over doors. But since this was such a neat discovery, I Bookmarked it, and resolved to tell the architecture people at Competitions.org.
A Bozeman History Site gives the following: “Some new apartments and duplexes appeared in the south end of Bozeman during this period. The building at 219-221 West Arthur Street provides a simple but elegant example of the streamlined Moderne Style. The two-story stucco duplex with flat roof has a symmetrical facade with an outset enclosed entry. On either side of the front steps is a metal banister designed with three concentric arcs. The horizontal lines of these window divisions mimic the horizontal bars in the portholes as well as the lines of the metal railing above the outset entry. “
You should notice the perfect Left-Right Symmetry, even to the driveways to the garages! Also study the Curved Metal Handrails of the front step, matching that of the Balcony, and the PortHole Door Windows, each mirrored in the second story.
