From The Previous Photo, The Camera Has Swung To The Left About 45 Degrees, To Reveal A Yellow Flowering Plant And Light Blue Sage Is Seen, In A West View Looking Over The Yellowstone River Valley, From Interstate 94 Rest Area, 24 Miles West Southwest Of Forsyth, MT .
….This Is Typical Scenery Over The Yellowstone River & Yellowstone River Valley, But Where Is The River? The River Itself Is Not Visible, But It Is Nestled In The Trees At The Lowest Place, Beyond The Fence & Smooth Gras Field At Right Edge Of Photo. .
…." I want to pursue further now that same ghost that Phædrus pursued...rationality itself, that dull, complex, classical ghost of underlying form.
....This morning I talked about hierarchies of thought....the system … . Now I want to talk about methods of finding one’s way through these hierarchies...logic.
….Two kinds of logic are used, inductive and deductive. " [The Narrator continues by expanding on these two logics. ]
After Miles City, MT, At The Next Interstate 94 Rest Area, Which Is ~5.5 Miles West Southwest of Custer, MT. Poetically reflecting the necessary but boring Interstate-94 Travel through this landscape, the ZMM Narrator discusses a similarly necessary but boring topic .. “ logic” .. which is the “ ghost .... of.... rationality".
….************** …
… For a long time I could not understand the meaning of the Narrator’s " ghost of rationality". But in the passage above we see for example, that the Narrator simply means all the assertions and habits of science, that make us Moderns who we are.
….************** …
…. NEW TOPIC: Interstate I-94 closely follows the southern edge of the Yellowstone River all the way from Glendive, MT, at Eastern Border ot Montana, to Billings. However, as you see in /\ Above /\ Photo, the river itself is not at all seen, or even hinted at! This is despite the fact that the /\ Above /\ Photo shows a view right over the river! This is usually the case in this part of Montana, for any river or stream.
….Growing up in Ohio, and living all my life in lands not at all as flat, or dry, as this region of Montana, I was caught by surprised by the my NON-ability to readily see rivers, or streams, in this wide expanse of relatively flat land\ .
…It took me some tine "getting used to" this. I had to learn the hard way (i.e. not finding good photos), that often the only indicators of streams or rivers, is a low line of trees, in an otherwise wide sea of grass.
….This NON-ability to readily see rivers, or streams, is not at all the prior experience, for a person like myself, who grew up the Eastern part of USA, where there is abundant rainfall.
…. NON-ability to see the river in /\ Above /\ Photo, is especially true because of the high dense trees on both sides of the river. Examples of these trees at the river will be seen in my photos taken from bridge crossings previous and upcoming.

….Back in July 2002, as much as possible I tries to find the “Non Interstate”, lesser traveled roads that Robert Pirsig might have followed, in 1968.
….As I drove West on I-94 from Miles City, MT, the first place I saw to turn off, was to exit the interstate at Forsyth, MT, onto the marginal road (which was the pavement of Old US-10, and followed this older road thru Sanders, MT. and Hysham, MT.
….However In August 2019, again traveling these same roads, I discovered that =>.”Traveling West from Miles City, MT would have to be I-94. But The ZMM Traveler can take the Exit at Hathaway (on to Graveyard Creek Road), which will lead to Old US-10 thru Rosebud, MT. this Old US 10 would be likely The ZMM Narrators choice thru to Hysham, MT.

A huge flock of red-winged blackbirds ascends from nests in the cattails, startled by our sound. I swat Chris’s knee a second time—then I remember he has seen them before. ”
Half Mile South East Of Pompys Pillar National Monument, MT. Since the ZMM Narrator emphasizes Red-Winged Blackbirds (RWBB) so much in ZMM Chapter 1, I decided I would photograph every RWBB that I could get within my camera sights. … Concerning The /\ Above /\ Photo, Showing A HUGE Version Of The Common Dandelions.
….This interesting plant looks like a huge version of the common Eastern USA dandelion. The white sphere (~3 inches diameter) at left is an example of the seedhead formed by a multitude of white tufts that will blow away in strong winds.
…I never saw a partly blown-away seedhead, so it must take a fierce wind to begin the process! The plant in center (~24 inches high) has several blossom heads that have closed-up after blooming. I never did see what the blossom looked like.

Salsify also known as Goatbeard (Tragopogon species) are nonnative species, common wildflowers often with yellow or purple to brown blooms. One species, Purple salsify (Tragopogon porrifolius) has an edible vegetable root that tastes like oyster, hence giving it one of its names, “oyster plant.”

Lower Center, Growing In A Snow Melt-Water Stream, Is Seen A Small White Flowering Shrub.
…Larger Versions Of This White Flowering Shrub Are Also Seen Further Up, Beyond Large Grey & White Rock. .…… Approximately June 21, 2002..
…. “ Soon stunted pines disappear entirely and we’re in alpine meadows. There’s not a tree anywhere, only grass everywhere … We’ve reached the high country, above the timberline. “
THE ZMM NARRATIVE will soon be **IN** “THE HIGH COUNTRY“ AND **AT** “THE SOURCE” OF => BOTH =>
….1) The Melt Water of Rock Creek AND
….2) The Source Of Western Philosophy,
*************************
On The Beartooth Highway, after two switchbacks, ~14 Miles South of Red Lodge, MT.
*************************
TO HELP THE READER BETTER APPRCIATE THE UPCOMING “HIGH COUNTRY FLOWERS”, THE FOLLOWING IS A COMPLETE DISCUSSION OF BOTH =>
…The ZMM Narrator’s, Physical Landscape AND Mental-Philosophic Landscape.
Ever Since Laurel, MT, With The ZMM Narrator, we Have Been Moving Up & Towards The ZMM. Narrator’s “High Country “
…. where in ZMM we learn (on the last half of ZMM page 110 plus 1/2 of page 111), :of the ZMM Narrator’s High Country “ PHYSICAL Landscape.
… HERE EXPECALLY REALIZE THAT => The ZMM Narrator is Poetically (Metaphoroc Bridge Connections), are getting us ready, by analogy, for the “ High Country of the MIND. “ At which point (one page after the above ZMM Passage), This the ZMM Narrator takes up the discussion of his own version of The Historical Development of Western Philosophy:
This Is The Narrator’s Poetic (Metaphoroc Bridge Connection),Way Of …Introducing Us To His Next 9 Pages Of His Chautauqua On Western Philosophy.
. These lectures cover the Narrator’s version of how our 20th Century thinking came to be as it is, as well as related rationality/scientific developments. ….In this discussion … The motorcycle is used as a concrete illustration of “ a priori concepts.“.
…. The ZMM Narrator, also shows the ugly consequences of these modes of thinking in our culture.
…******************
The ZMM Narrative Is Building To A Climax, As We Move Towards The Narrator’s “High Country ‘Summit’. ”
…..Below Is A Brief Synopsis Of The Road Ahead, And Sights Along The Way.
…After the Beartooth Highway (US-212) has completed six switchbacks, we have climbed to the higher somewhat level area of the Beartooth Plateau: Here we see in the distance the cut of Rock Creek Canyon (Narrator’s gorge). And, as we travel further South, we will be moving further away from Rock Creek Canyon.
…. But, along US-212, we will see Rock Creek Canyon again in the distance, while overlooking The “Twin Lakes & The “Beartooth Basin Summer Ski Area”.
….After this, the highway takes us Southeast and away from Rock Creek Canyon.
…. Finally, the road swings West by Northwest to a kind of “Land-Bridge Formation”, which in this Photo Album is called. “The Hogback”: In Blue Link below, is a Fully Illustrated & Extensive “Interlude & Explanation of => a) Aerial Photo, b) Satellite View, and c) Topographical Map => So you can see that this “Hogback Formation” is very important for the Beartooth Plateau, in that it is the ONLY practical way for Humans to move (highways or hunters, or prospectors, or otherwise), North-South, between Two Otherwise Separated, Major, High Altitude Land Surfaces.
… To Learn About “The Hogback Formation” & See A Dramatic Photo => Right Click, And Open New Tab. And AFTER a page of 18 small photos comes up, Scroll Down To BELOW the 12th Small Photo (And Read) at => Here STARTS => An Interlude & Explanation,
…. Moreover, In Above Blue Link, You Will See How VERY Steep is the slope on the sides of this “Hogback”: This steep slope & sharp top edge, Act Upon Snow Carrying Overflowing Winter Winds coming Eastward along connecting valleys, from the relatively close Rock Creek Canyon => Here creating an aerodynamic “up-sweep + swirl” action, that nicely drops deep layers of snow hereabouts => One such dramatic area of really deep snow area, of which the ZMM Narrator says “The banks become four feet high, then six feet, then twelve feet high. We move through twin walls, almost a tunnel of snow.”
… … Similar geographic features also cause deep snow, at the “Beartooth Highway’s Summer Ski Area”, located further Northeast along the Beartooth Highway.

In An Alpine Meadow, Beside A Ditch Filled With Show-Melt Water, These White Blossoms Pop-Up Everywhere!
…. “Only Grass Everywhere Filled With Little Pink And Blue And White Dots Of Intense Color.“
….[ “ Soon stunted pines disappear entirely and we’re in alpine meadows. There’s not a tree anywhere, only grass everywhere … We’ve reached the high country, above the timberline. “ ] “ Soon we are between banks of old snow, the way snow looks in early spring after a thaw. Little streams of water run everywhere into mossy mud, and then below this into week-old grass and then small wildflowers, the tiny pink and blue and yellow and white ones which seem to pop out, sun-brilliant, from black shadows. Everywhere it’s like this! Little pins of colored light shoot forth to me from a background of somber dark green and black. Dark sky now and cold. Except where the sun hits. On the sun side my arm and leg and jacket are hot, but the dark side, in deep shadows now, is very cold.“ [There’s not a tree anywhere,] “ only grass everywhere filled with little pink and blue and white dots of intense color.“
~1.5 Straight Line Miles SouthSouthEast Of Rock Creek Vista Point, First Roadside Rest Area, Beartooth Highway, MT. Even the above Narrator’s beautifully phrased flower descriptions of ZMM page 110, are poetically getting us ready, by analogy, for the ZMM Narrator’s “ High Country of the Mind“, where there are “ Little pins of colored [philosophical] light shoot forth to me from a background of somber [every day normal thinking] ...little pink and blue and white dots of intense [philosophical thinking] “ !!
..****************..
The ZMM Narrator’s Flowers =>
…The flowers here appear to be Mountain Marsh Marigolds (Caltha leptosepala) also known as White Marsh Marigold, Broad-Leaved Marsh Marigold and Elkslip. As the the name suggests, these flowers thrive in wet areas, such as the snow-melt ditch in the picture above, or the mossy mud described in the passage from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Considered harbingers of spring, Mountain Marsh Marigolds are plentiful after snow-melt and bloom early spring through august in alpine and sub-alpine meadows in the Rocky Mountains. Actually from the buttercup family and not a true marigold, Mountain Marsh Marigolds are a treat for foraging moose and elk.

During My 2002 ZMM Route Research Trip, I Captured In Photographs An Example Of Practically Every Flower I Saw.
…. However, as you can see in this “Flowers” Album, my photographs in the highest elevations of Beartooth Plateau, do not correspond to Te ZMM Narrator’s Colors, such as the area of the /\ Above /\ Photo at this WayPt =136 at 9554 feet.
…Here, and at higher elevations, are where I looked for but did not see the ZMM Narrator’s “ pink and blue flowers“. In fact, I did not see such flowers until well after the snow fields and return to elevations below 9500 feet. What could be the reasons for this absence? Reasons could be =>
..1) My travel through here was almost a month earlier in the season than the Narrator’s.
..2) The Narrator must compress into a few short paragraphs a vast travel experience, many different times and elevations.
..3) Each ZMM Traveler can expect to see the high country “differently”, whether philosophic or in reality.
..****************..
Certainly, In These Quick Sketches, We Catch The Narrator’s Thrill Of The High Country =>
…. The Real Physical Landscape Scene.
And By Analogy & Metaphoric Bridge Connection =>
…. The Mental & Philosophic Landscape Scene.

Climbing Down The Steep Slope On “A Hogback Formation”, Beartooth Highway, WY. The ZMM Narrator's descriptions of all the beautiful flowers in the "High Country", had alerted me to be looking for flowers all along the highways of my ZMM Route Research.
….After The Rock Creek Vista Point TurnOut Rest Area, I especially was looking for flowers near locations that would best fit the ZMM Narrator’s passage above. For example, I looked for flowers all around my Way Point 136, but none were seen in that area.
….In retrospect, I imagine that there could have been warm, sunny, slopes for flowers all around WayPt = 136. But, I just did not know where to look for them, or more likely, the flowers were near there, I just did not see them!..
….By pure chance, at Way Point 145, I had decided to climb down the steep slope to photograph a marmot killed along the highway. This was steep down to the next tier, and by a switchback. To do this I climbed straight down a steep Northwestern facing slope. And, here by pure chance, I discovered some very nice wild flowers! This includes the /\ Above /\ Photo,
What Is The Reason These Flowers Can Flourish Here (Somewhat Better Than Other Places) At These Elevations?
…I think it is this steep Northwest facing hill side was / is on a slope and orientation that got much greater sun & daily warmth. This would occur in the Mid Summer, several hours a day, mid to late afternoon, while the sun is actually to the Northwest, and somewhat perpendicular to the steep slope. This sunshine condition & direction is duplicate in my photos.
….This sun’s warmth helps develop these flowers well in advance of the flowering plants in surrounding land areas.
…However, I came through here June 21, two weeks prior to the Narrator and crew, so I may have gotten to this area a bit too early in the growing season, to really expect to see the Narrator's flowers.
….What my photos show on this "extra warm sun enhanced slope”, surely would appear later all over the higher and more level areas of open tundra seen in my photos. AND now I know => Warm sunny slopes would be the best locations to find flowers to properly fit-in with the ZMM Narrative.

Climbing Down The Steep Slope On “The Hogback Formation”, Beartooth Highway, WY. As mentioned in the 2nd previous photo:
..1) I just did not know where to look for wild flowers, or more likely, the flowers were there, I just did not see them!
..2) And, it was only by pure chance that I found the lichens in the /\ Above /\ Photo (as well as those flowers of previous two photos)!
….I found them ONLY because I had decided to climb down the steep grass covered slope to see the Marmot.
A Major Object Lesson: Continued From Previous Photo => How Did It Happen, That By Accident, I Was Climbing Down The Steep Slope On “Hogback Formation”, Beartooth Highway, WY.
….As in the case of stopping and climbing down to view the above-mentioned Marmot => To really see "what is there" on any trip, you must stop and get out of your car and go on short hikes. … Even if you don’t want to! … Even if you have no expectation of finding something. … You must go explore!
It Is An Important Real Fact Repeatedly Real-World Demonstrated =>
…Some of my most enjoyable experiences were when I least expected them! Some of my best discoveries happened, and my best photos were found, when I was forced to stop, even when I did not want to!
….Or course, once stopped, you must get out of the car, and go for a long hike, like the Narrator.

~4.9 Straight Line Miles SouthSouthWest Of Rock Creek Vista Point, First Roadside Rest Area, Beartooth Highway, MT. As noted the previous photo, I looked for, but did not see “ pink and blue flowers“ until after I came down to elevations below 9,600 feet.
My Photos Are Opposite To The ZMM Narrator's Much Repeated, Bright Sun—Dark Shadows, High Country Scenery Illumination Discourse, Which Typically Happens At High-Altitude, With Low Air Humidity.
….The ZMM passage above describes the sharp “ sun-brilliant, from black shadows.“
that result from intense brilliant sunlight in high altitude, low humidity air. These are also the conditions for the Narrator's darker “ black-blue sky“ directly overhead.
….However, as mentioned earlier, my photos of the high country do not show the Narrator's high altitude " brilliant sun illumination, with dark shadows. ”
…My photos were taken in opposite conditions, high humidity and dark, very cloudy skies, with no sun.
….Thus, in /\ Above /\ Photo, you see no dark shadows, nor even hardly any shadow. But even with, or because of the overcast conditions, my photos still show “ … yellow and white ones which seem to pop out … “ from the watery mud with lots of somber browns in the dead grass.

Way Above A Rushing Mountain Stream, We See Rust Colored Lichens On A Large Rock, And Discover These Orangish Yellow Flowers. … Approximately June 21, 2002.
